WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson checks in with JohnCanzano.com’s namesake to provide more thoughts on the Power 4’s recent proposal to operate NCAA postseason events. Jackson: “They told the rest of the FBS world how it was going to be. Tampering with the men’s basketball tournament and the women’s basketball tournament is a bigger issue even than the CFP process. That tournament and the revenue that’s garnered from that tournament affects far many more NCAA member institutions than does the CFP distribution process. That tournament funds a great many institutions and athletic programs across the country. Many people — not only men’s and women’s basketball — rely on that revenue, as do the Olympic sports. And potentially, there are a lot of student-athletes' services, experiences, a championship, and their care that will be affected if those tournaments are tampered with, particularly not knowing what their intention is. [...] At the end of the day, they have the power, the resources to dictate what it is they would like to see. And that’s a bit scary for all of us.” Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill chimes in: “We don’t stop them from doing anything now. What do you need more of that you don’t already have and can’t vote in yourself? They already have a kind of absolute power. You can already change the rules how you want. So what are you looking for?” (link)
|
“Anybody else who pulls it in-house or eliminates their collective will very quickly relaunch in some form or fashion if they’re serious about sports. If you’re a Power Four school and you’re not fully funding up to the cap and have an active collective, then your administration doesn’t really care about sports as a priority.” That’s The Collective Association President Russell White to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy on developments around how schools are structurally contemplating a potential House settlement & revenue share environment. White also tells Portnoy the “most lucrative” football rosters during the past season were $15M+ operations. (link)
|
Idaho State AD Pauline Thiros points to a March 1 vote that will officially determine how the Big Sky handles the House settlement & revenue sharing. In the meantime: “We’re still in the mode where we’re dramatically trying to increase revenue all the time and we are investing it in our programs. We still have to do a lot of that. I don’t see revenue sharing being a huge boon for our student athletes at all. The optics are there, but that is something our financial model would have to work up to. We still have NIL (name, image and likeness), we still have cost of attendance, all of those are still ways we can get money to our student athletes. [...] A $250,000 dip in our revenue is material for us. We’ve done everything we can do to try to make that up…. You’ve got to make that up in attendance, ticket sales, fundraising, in all the contracts that we have, in sponsorships, in what we charge for advertising. We’ve renegotiated almost every department for services that we have this year. We’ve said you’ve got to sharpen your pencils. If it generates revenue, we’ve said you’ve got to find a way to generate more revenue. You have to find a way to charge us less for this service (and) how do we do it?” Could the Bengals schedule another buy game with an FBS opponent to help the bottom line? “I don’t think it’s healthy for our kids and our program. And I think those games are going to be harder to get. I don’t think there are going to be as many of them out there. They’re already harder to get — I’m trying to schedule in 2031.” More. (link)

Vanderbilt faces a potential $500K fine from the SEC for its third court/field storming of the academic year. Dores AD Candice Storey Lee was asking fans not to do so just before the victory looked inevitable, “Let us use the money for NIL to make a great team next year.” (link); Storey Lee on the newly opened Huber Center: “We've been on a journey for a while. Last year was a great opportunity to grow and to learn. There's no parts that have been easy. Even the most challenging times have been rewarding. I didn't sign up for easy. I do feel that we have and we are moving in the direction to have everything that we need to compete at the highest level. … I just think the signal that it sends is so important. It can be hard to quantify, but the signaling and the credibility that come with showing you have made an investment [are important] that backs up [what you're saying]. You can have the aspirations, but you have to have the resources that support the aspirations and I think this clearly signals that.” (link)

Cincinnati Deputy AD for External Relations/CRO Anthony Di Fino joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on this episode of The Career Hustle. The two highlight his career journey that started out in ticket sales in New York for Columbia and how he still uses the skills he learned competing against the biggest brands. Di Fino also talks about proving to leaders you're ready to take the next step in leadership and what he looks for when making hires. De Fino explains that in his nearly two decades in the industry he’s had 13 or 14 direct bosses. With that level of leadership change, De Fino has found it’s best to be yourself. “You can't just sit there and think I need to be like my boss. You're representing your boss. You’re representing your university, but if you're not yourself, you're going to get lost in all this. … I am not my boss. I was hired to help maybe fill some of those gaps or execute the things that they want me to do, but 13 or 14 bosses, if I tried to be like each one of them, I would be completely lost as to who I am.” When a new AD does come in, De Fino remarks: “I think you just need to put your head down and do the work you know you can do and let the work do the talking for you.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. Oh to be a fly in the room at the South Carolina Board of Trustees meeting on Friday. One board member wondered how the Gamecocks will split the $20.5M rev share cap, "because I bet our illegitimate cousins in the northwest corner are gonna put $20.5 million towards football and nothing else.” AD Jeremiah Donati explained how the fair market value process will work after July 1, with $600K being the threshold before a clearinghouse process is triggered, and board member Dan Adams remarked: “We just competed for a linebacker. We were gonna offer $400K and Mississippi took him for $800K.” (link)

Texas A&M’s 12th Man Foundation dished out $27.22M in football severance payments in FY24, the most of any FBS public institution in the last five years. Former Aggies Football HC Jimbo Fisher was slated to receive an initial lump sum of $19.2M, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Texas A&M reported total operating expenses of $243.7M in FY24, a nearly $50M jump YOY. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner and JohnCanzano.com’s namesake discuss several topics in a Q&A podcast, including a potential super league, which Wilner posits will have fewer teams than the 70ish many have predicted: “I don’t think that the TV networks are going to be interested in paying a premium for – and I'm just naming some schools here – NC State against Minnesota. Mississippi State against Boston College. TCU against Illinois. Those games are not worth big money. The games that are worth big money are Ohio State-Georgia. Clemson-Michigan. USC-Florida State. I think the super league, if it comes, will only have 32-40 schools…and then everybody else has got to reform and do probably regional conferences if that’s what happens.” Canzano adds: “I love the idea of a relegation-promotion model because it says, ‘Hey, look if you want to belong, go win.’” Oregon State’s collective, Canzano notes, reportedly spent $2M on three players, which “tells me that they watched Arizona State, SMU, Boise State and they said, ‘Oh, we need to spend and we can't wait for the new-world Pac-12. We need to spend now.’ They’re going to try to matter next season.” To that point, Wilner posits that the next five to six years are “really an audition for everybody. Not not your Georgias and Alabamas, they would get in the super league. But you get past those blue bloods and then it could get into the steel cage match for admission.” More from Canzano & Wilner. Deloitte has released a white paper titled The New Era of College Athletics: Securing a sustainable financial future through revenue generation and expense management. The paper advises athletic departments to take a three-pronged approach to identifying and capturing new revenue streams, starting with assessing the current state of the athletic department. “Build a baseline understanding of current strategic, operational, and financial health, benchmarked against leading practices to inform the athletic department’s financial and operating goals. The comprehensive assessment should provide a clear understanding of the current landscape and identify areas for improvement and growth.” Second, plan for the future. “Forecast and scenario plan for known and potential expenditures and revenue over the next five years. This should include detailed financial categories specific to athletics,” such as team health, academic services, team travel and recruiting costs. “By considering these specific financial categories, athletic departments can create more accurate and actionable financial plans that address the unique needs and challenges of collegiate athletics.” Finally, chart a path forward: “Develop a strategic plan that prioritizes increasing revenue and reduces costs through the identification of sustainable opportunities for growth, centering the experience of current and future student-athletes, faculty, staff and fans.” Recommended revenue-generation activities could include developing a creative NIL strategy, exploring naming rights partnerships and setting clear objectives, among others. Expense management strategies could include updating the budget model, eliminating redundancies, establishing or refining governance structures and more. Full paper. (link)

@1QLeadership Question: How much does an athletics director think about succession planning?
Alex Ricker-Gilbert, Senior Vice President and Athletic Director at Jacksonville University, discusses hiring coaches and succession planning with Lamarr Pottinger, Director of Leadership Development with the NCAA. Ricker-Gilbert has a process of identifying assistant coaches that could potentially be head coaches in the future and engaging with them regularly. He also talks about being aggressive with head coaches who show early signs of success, such as extending one Jacksonville head coach to a 10-year contract after his first year.
• "Will this person care more about our student-athletes as people than as athletes?"
• "Tell us why you want to be at our institution"
• "If you do a good job hiring, the rest of the leader's job is much easier."
Ricker-Gilbert believes upward mobility at Jacksonville is the department's competitive advantage. 🎥 on Youtube, Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner suggests the pending lawsuit between the Mountain West & the Pac-12 could dictate the next moves in conference realignment. In a nutshell, here’s why: “In theory, the Pac-12 needs to offer membership to the eighth football-playing school this spring, so it can give notice-of-departure to its conference before July 1 and avoid an increase in fees. (In many instances, exit fees jump if notice is given within a year of departure.) But because the hearing on the motion to dismiss the lawsuit is March 25, the legal process might not play out before UNLV hits the 12-month deadline to offer for notice-of-departure. Settlements take time. Then again, it’s entirely possible that the Pac-12 focuses on Texas State and perhaps the trio of AAC schools (Memphis, USF, Tulane) this spring. Or that UNLV is willing to wait, and the membership decision plays out after July 1.” Lots more nuance, because as Wilner notes, “there are always complicating factors with realignment.” (link)

Speaking of realignment, the Deseret News’ Joe Coles points to Utah’s move to the Big 12 as one reason its FY24 budget results ended with a $17M+ deficit. Conference distributions were down by nearly $7M YoY & more broadly the Utes say 70% of the overall deficit can be connected back to the league switch (legal fees, travel costs also noted). However, “Key revenue performance indicators such as ticket sales, number of donors, and total donations (not all reflected in this report) improved year-over-year,” plus Utah covered the deficit with “carry forward” department reserves. NJ Advance Media’s Adam Zagoria chats with Vitaminwater/Body Armor Founder Mike Repole, who says about his support for St. John’s: “It’s either evolve or die.” St. John’s had been “stuck in 1990 for a while” in terms of its approach to college athletics, but that changed when the school hired Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino, according to Repole, who provides more than 50% of the Red Storms’ NIL money and adds: “It’s starting to feel different [at St. John’s]. You know, for new fans, it’s like, ‘oh my God, I’ve never felt this before.’ And for fans like me of 40 years, it’s like, this is what it used to feel like, and it’s special.” The Johnnies’ success this season “just says that when you hire an amazing coach, legendary icon, and [unite him with] St John’s and their incredible history of basketball and the university and New York City and Madison Square Garden, this is what you get,” Repole continues. “And it’s only the beginning right now and it’s a feeling I haven’t had in 25 years. I mean, it’s electric. I moved out of New York five, six years ago. And [Wednesday], it felt nostalgic.” Regarding the future of college sports in general, Repole remarks: “The era of hiring the administrator with a double Masters in education as your AD doesn’t work anymore. You now need to bring in people that have business sense, people that have worked for Fortune 500 companies. You need to bring in people that are entrepreneurs. You need to work with different people you’ve never worked with before. … It’s either evolve or die.” (link)

Vanderbilt officially dedicated its new Huber Center yesterday, the brand-new basketball facility made possible by the lead gift from George and Cathy Huber. This is the first non-renovation project completed as part of the Vandy United campaign, which began in 2021. The facility houses the men’s practice court and offices on the first floor and the women’s on the third. The second level of the building has a weight room, athletic training center and other shared amenities. Photos inside. (link)

More on Mississippi State’s facilities push, which was heavily publicized yesterday, includes more identified upgrades for Baseball’s Dudy Noble Field. Though there’s no exact timeline, the list of enhancements includes new premium suites down each baseline, a second loft added in left field, general seating areas on the berms & added outfield spaces. There are also additional needs for a year-round restaurant that could be a revenue opportunity, creating a new visitor’s clubhouse, new coaches offices & more. (link)

Former UCF Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof has filed a lawsuit against the university on the grounds of breach of contract connected to the buyout terms he claims were reduced when the Knights moved on from former Head Coach Gus Malzahn. As you may recall, Roof was terminated without cause 33 days before Malzahn’s exit & Roof contends he should be owed an additional $50K based on pro-rated pay, not a lesser amount that was outlined in his deal should Malzahn no longer be employed. From the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel: “The lawsuit states that the provision is meaningless because it only applies if the school still employed Roof at Malzahn’s resignation.” (link)

New North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick on the NIL landscape during The Pat McAfee Show yesterday: “It’s pretty similar to what we have in the NFL. As I said, it’s a little bit of a combination between the day when a couple of players after the draft, the undrafted players are negotiating to be on a roster, and free agency, just in general, where, those couple of days — it’s called the legal tampering period, I think they call it, when you’re talking to agents, trying to work out deals with them, before the players are actually allowed to visit, and you’re allowed to talk to them. It’s not the same, but it’s sort of a combination of those two NFL events. So, it is what it is. There’s a lot of money, promises and opportunity being discussed, and everybody is in on it. The players, the teams that have the players, the teams that are looking for the players, and following the guidelines of the process, which are not as well-defined as they were in the NFL, but that’s what it is.” (link)

(link) CBS’ Matt Zenitz: “The money numbers for college football general managers and personnel staffers continue to go up, and rightfully so. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter reports that Connecticut is the latest state with a bill to allow schools to “directly (or via a 3rd party) pay athletes and prohibits the NCAA from taking any action for doing so. It uses the term ‘revenue sharing agreement,’ which does not limit payments by a school to NIL compensation.” From the bill: “An institution of higher education, or an entity acting on behalf of such institution, may create, facilitate, negotiate, support, assist with, engage with or otherwise enable opportunities for a student athlete or a prospective student athlete to earn compensation for use of such student athlete’s name, image or likeness or any other compensation related to such student athlete’s participation in an intercollegiate athletic program. No institution of higher education shall use state funds appropriated to such institution for compensation of a student athlete pursuant to an endorsement contract or a revenue sharing agreement.” (link)

After its regular season ratings dropped by 2%, the NFL’s wildcard weekend experienced ratings that fell 9% from last year while the divisional round ratings decreased by 7%. Puck’s John Ourand notes there are a few factors potentially at play here, including the presidential election, during which the NFL’s numbers are traditionally softer, as well as a shortage of blue-chip teams like the Cowboys or 49ers and a lack of big-market teams. “Inside the league office, many recognize that the Jets’ and Giants’ disastrous seasons played a role in the ratings dip. And then there was the inaugural 12-team [College Football Playoff], which competed with the NFL a couple of times. The divisional playoff round was also scheduled on a holiday weekend just before a presidential inauguration.” However, considering the wild card games and divisional round games averaged 28.3M and 37.1M viewers, respectively, league officials aren’t overly concerned, with one telling Ourand: “What this league has been doing, relative to the rest of the business, is off the charts. So let’s not overreact. But if we do start to see some longer-term trends over the next few years, there are some factors that should get a second look.” Ourand goes on to point out that while streaming services are willing to pony up big money for exclusive rights to certain games, “neither Netflix nor Amazon (and certainly not Peacock) will be able to compete with traditional broadcast networks on total viewership. As the league continues to put more games on OTT services, its viewership numbers will feel the impact.” (link)

The American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon’s Imagining the Digital Future Center conducted a survey of 330 college presidents, provosts and other senior leaders to gather their thoughts on the impact AI is having on teaching and learning, and just 43% said their institution was ready to effectively use generative AI to prepare students for the future. The same percentage responded positively when asked if they were preparing faculty for teaching and mentoring with generative AI. When asked about challenges to adopting AI in courses, 93% cited faculty unfamiliarity with generative AI, and 84% cited lack of training and support. Regarding AI’s impact on campus, 45% thought it would be more positive than negative, 27% thought it would be equally positive and negative, 17 percent thought it would be negative and 10% said they didn’t know. Imagining the Digital Future Center Director Lee Rainie: “This is really an inflection point. What we see in these data is there are people who are gung-ho to move forward, and there are people who are terrified, who don’t know how to move forward or don’t want to move forward. That makes it sort of hard to figure out, as a broad class of institutions, where the future lies.” (link)
