Memphis AD Ed Scott says one thing he's noticed is that some people on the staff were “always waiting for the next shoe to drop. So if something is good, they’re not asking how you keep it going, they’re asking when is it going to stop? I don’t live my life that way. So I finally said in some meetings, ‘Look, I need believers. If you’re not going to believe in what we’re doing, you might as well leave.’” He goes on to tell the Daily Memphian’s Geoff Calkins that “my goal – I want to make sure this is clear to you and everybody else – my goal is to be a Top 25 athletic program in America. Right now, based on my last count, there’s seven programs that have football and men’s basketball in the Top 25. We’re the only one in the Group of Five. The Big 12 had one in Iowa State, there were zero in the ACC and then the other five were between the Big Ten and the SEC.” Scott also opens up about the fatal heart attack Tigers Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Welfare Marlon Dechausay suffered in Maui in November. He didn’t attend the Tigers last game and was instead at the hospital at Dechausay’s bedside. “I felt as a leader that it was my responsibility to be there with my people the same way I would have wanted them to do for me. We’re going to win games, we’re going to lose games, you guys are going to write about them. But we’re talking about a man’s life who has 17- and 13-year-old boys that I had to spend time with, and a wife who is missing her partner. So it told me what was really important — the people.” (link)

More from Scott’s sitdown with Calkins, during which Scott says he spoke with Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould after turning down the league’s invite. “And we just had a heart-to-heart. I said, ‘Listen, I normally wouldn’t have put all of the business out on the street that way. But somebody was leaking information because the media had it and I didn’t give it to them, and I was about two months into my tenure.’ I had to let people know why we made that decision because my credibility was on the line as a new athletic director. Had that information not been leaked I would have just said, ‘Based on what we know it’s not a great decision, we’re not going to do it.’ But I felt the need to come out a little more strongly in that press conference than I normally would have.” Scott reiterates that his hope for any conference-wide mandates on revenue-sharing is “that there’s a floor and a minimum. If there’s a ceiling, it’s a nonstarter for Memphis, it’s just a nonstarter. … We have different support. We have corporate support and some other stuff. South Florida has a really big enrollment, right? Tulane has a big endowment. I think the role of the conference is to set some guidelines but not to inhibit institutions from doing what they do inherently well. Otherwise, it’s almost like antitrust. You’re telling us that we can’t do X? So what is that going to do to Memphis? That’s going to make me look at other options.” Asked whether he has any difficulty recruiting to Memphis, Scott replies: “No, because I don’t sell the bad parts of Memphis. I don’t have to because you guys write about them all the time. So everybody knows about the crime and about this and that. So I say, ‘You know what Memphis is, but this is what the future of Memphis could look like if you want to be a change agent. So why don’t you come be part of that?’” Full Q&A. (link)

With regards to the House settlement, South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati says the Gamecocks are “operationalizing the department for what it looks like the next five to 10 years. I’d be lying to you if I told you we didn’t have more work to do. We have a lot of work to do. … It’s not without additional expense. You saw the news from the Department of Education. We’re going to probably be paying student-athletes in four sports. Let’s just make that assumption. And so that’s probably 125 to 150 student athletes. We need people in the department that are negotiating with agents and families. We need people that are writing these contracts, administering these contracts, balancing and supporting a cap management system, and ultimately submitting this through the SEC as part of terms of the settlement.” On the future of NIL: “To find an $800K real NIL deal to pass scrutiny, I’m telling you, they’re very, very, very few and far in between. Other than a Heisman Trophy-caliber player, they just don’t exist. And they certainly don’t exist for offensive linemen or that type of thing so that’ll be some kind of hard industry reset. Assuming the letter of the law comes, that the settlements written on it, assuming those things do become enforceable, you just won’t see the same numbers.” Lots more. (link)

Michigan is accusing the NCAA of “grossly overreaching” and “wildly overcharging” the program without credible evidence that other staff members were aware of the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scheme, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who adds: “Michigan makes clear that it will not enter into a negotiated resolution with the NCAA over the alleged wrongdoing, vigorously defending its former head coach, current head coach, several staff members and even Stalions. … The school purports that the sign-stealing system offered ‘minimal relevance to competition,’ was not credibly proven by NCAA investigators and should be treated as a minor violation.” Michigan goes on in its response to contend the NCAA makes “numerous factually unsupported infractions, exaggerates aggravating factors and ignores mitigating facts.” U-M requests that the NCAA apply “common sense and commitment to fairness” and treat the case as a “Level II standard case” rather than a Level I case. The NCAA has not revealed the identity of the individual who tipped them off about the scheme, and Michigan maintains the confidential leaker was used by the NCAA to produce at least some of the charges in the notice of allegations, about which it expresses “concern.” Dellenger adds: “While the school respects the secrecy of confidential sources, it says in the document, the NCAA can present evidence and infractions based only on ‘information that can be attributed to individuals who are willing to be identified.’” More. Washington Football HC Jedd Fisch joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast and contends that tampering would be easy to stop by making “contracts mean something. … People call our players after every single game they play, and what I think certain teams don’t realize is the relationship you have with your own player is far stronger than the relationship that somebody thinks that they have by calling one of our players. So, the information comes back to us all the time and we're aware of every tampering event that occurs. The question becomes what is tampering? Is it allowed or is it not allowed? And until we figure out it's not allowed, then it's going to continue – or unless we allow third parties to continue to reach out and say that they have no real obligation to the university, they will continue to do that.” When it comes to how to distribute revenue among the football team, Fisch says the Huskies will take an approach similar to that of the NFL. “Pro football, they've got a, call it a $250M cap, how much do they spend on their quarterback position by percentage? How much do they spend on their left tackle position by percentage? … Is [the player] under a rookie contract, meaning a freshman? Did you bring them in as a free agent, meaning the portal? And then what does that look like in comparison? So I think in that regard you do have the ability to decide what we want to spend at each position group and then we're going to make a decision on what type of team we're going to be. I coached with the Baltimore Ravens from '04 to ‘07 and a tremendous amount of our cap space was on defense…the Rams right now are playing with a very young defense and a very veteran offense. They’re skewed the other way capwise. So we’ve got to make those decisions and I hope my experience in the NFL…will help us navigate these waters a little differently.” Full podcast. (link)

The Horizon League has suspended Oakland Men’s Basketball HC Greg Kampe for Thursday’s game against Green Bay for “engaging with an official in a manner that violated League Operating Violations and is unacceptable” during the recent matchup with Robert Morris. The league adds: “Related, a significant officiating error occurred near the end of the game. The responsible game official will no longer work Horizon League games.” (link)

With construction ongoing at FBC Mortgage Stadium, UCF won’t host a traditional spring football game, according to Knights AD Terry Mohajir, who says there will be “some scrimmages that will be open to the public. We may give our fans more of an opportunity to see more practices.” Even when construction is complete, Mohajir predicts a lot of schools will likely begin changing the way they approach spring games due to the spring transfer portal. “It’s the Home Shopping Network of the spring. So if you need a running back or an offensive lineman, you’re going to have your off-the-field staff scour every spring game from the Group of Five to the Power Four.” Still, he’d like fans to get to see the team in action. “I like to have some different days if [HC Scott Frost is] OK with it, invite faculty, invite the staff. When I was a player, I got juiced up when people would come out to practice. I think it’s fun.” (link)

NCAA Board of Governors student-athlete representative/former Oklahoma State softball student-athlete Morgyn Wynne joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2025 NCAA Convention to talk about her progression in SAAC, taking on leadership roles, what topics she's amplifying on behalf of all divisions and more. Wynne cites the transfer portal as one example of positive change that has occurred while working with the board: “Definitely the multiple-time transfer rule was the biggest impact. I’ve had plenty of former teammates that have transferred multiple times, plenty of friends, so it's been kind of fun. And then being on campus and some of my peers knowing that I'm advocating for them. … It’s been really amazing to see the change in real time and how they are actively finding their homes through these processes. I know transferring and all the transfer portal stuff can get kind of murky, but seeing these people find their homes, that’s what matters to me.” More on Connect. (link)

The Big East for the fourth consecutive season is partnering with the Black Fives Foundation, a nonprofit public charity dedicated to inspiring excellence in youth by preserving, teaching, and honoring the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball. Commissioner Val Ackerman: “This season, we are once again honored to spotlight the powerful and inspiring stories of African American pioneers who laid the groundwork for the game of basketball as we know it today. Their legacy inspires our athletes and communities, and we're proud that the Big East platform will be used to celebrate and elevate their impact in a meaningful way.” (link)

ADs from the new-look Pac-12 gathered at the league HQ in San Ramon, Calif., on Monday for two days of meetings, and JohnCanzano.com’s eponym reports: “The ADs covered several topics on Monday, including the House settlement and strategic planning for 2026. They received an update on the conference’s media rights negotiations and then took a group tour of the Pac-12 Enterprises facility. The general mood? One AD in the room told me: ‘Mostly optimistic — everyone getting a feel for each other.’” Today’s meeting is set to include an update on expansion, and Canzano notes that rounding out the football membership is a high priority. “Multiple ADs have told me they believe nine is the ideal number of football schools. That could mean two expansion additions, not one. UNLV and Nevada together? Tulane and Memphis? … Anything is possible at the right numbers. Having at least nine schools makes football scheduling easier and avoids having to find (and buy) additional non-conference games. But the Pac-12, to this point, has acted methodically and calculated with membership decisions. The league still has time. It’s being strategic. Also, there is a pending lawsuit with the Mountain West that may shade the decision.” As the meetings continue, one AD tells Canzano: “You can sense that this is all starting to feel real for people.” (link)

The Trump administration has removed NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo from her position. Abruzzo: “There’s no putting the genie back in the bottle. So, if the Agency does not fully effectuate its Congressional mandate in the future as we did during my tenure, I expect that workers with assistance from their advocates will take matters into their own hands in order to get well-deserved dignity and respect in the workplace, as well as a fair share of the significant value they add to their employers’ operations." Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd attorney Len Simon, who has taught at Duke and other highly regarded law schools, has filed an amicus brief alleging price fixing in the injunctive relief portion of the House settlement, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes Simon is also a “50-year veteran of sports law, civil litigation and Title IX cases.” From the brief: “The strength of the damage settlement and weakness of the injunctive settlement suggests that the NCAA, having been forced to pay billions for its misconduct in the past, seeks in exchange permission from the Court to violate the antitrust laws and place an artificial cap on athlete compensation for the next ten years. … Whether the imprimatur of this Court on this price fix creates antitrust immunity, or a legal defense to antitrust claims, or even a strong talking point in defending such conduct, approval of the injunctive settlement is harmful to the rights of college athletes. The Court should not countenance such a term as a tradeoff for damages for a different class.” Simon also argues the “price fix harms competition” at many schools. “For example, if the injunctive relief were approved, a football powerhouse like Alabama might spend $15M on football, $3.5M on men’s basketball, $1M on women’s basketball, and $500K on all their athletes in eleven other varsity sports. Alabama will then be prohibited by the injunction from spending a penny more on compensation to any athlete, whether football, basketball, or exceptional athletes in minor sports, who might similarly be snubbed by dozens of schools choosing who are capped out by other priorities, although they would pay these athletes well but for the cap.” More. Meanwhile, the Pac-12 and USC won’t oppose the NCPA’s motion to withdraw its NLRB complaint seeking student-athlete employment. In a court filing last week, Pac-12 lawyers argued: “If anything, the NCPA’s motion confirms that this case never should have been commenced because the purported reasons for withdrawal have nothing to do with the legal merits of the charge the NCPA actually filed.” In its motion to withdraw, the NCPA wrote: “A primary reason the NCPA filed the [unfair labor practice complaint] against respondents was to help create a pathway and catalyst for USC and other universities to directly compensate their athletes who earn less than their fair market value. Together, these state laws and the change in respondents’ position on compensating its college athletes serve as powerful catalysts toward USC (and other universities) paying their football and basketball players fair compensation.” (link)

ESPN presented viewership data to the College Football Playoff Management Committee before the championship game, and sources tell SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane and Austin Karp that the general sentiment among the group was that there was no commitment to any substantive schedule changes in Year 2 of the expanded CFP. “There was little appetite at this time to bring the first round up to Heisman week (also Army-Navy Week). In fact, for the first-round games on TNT Sports that went up against NFL regular-season games on broadcast TV, sources noted ESPN data in the presentation showed it was the NFL that may have lost a more noticeable share of audience by competing with the CFP (meaning the loss of audience for the two afternoon CFP first-round games was not as bad as expected).” Regarding the decline in linear TV audiences, media consultants advise against sounding the alarm. “One expert referenced increased audience share going to places like YouTube and Netflix, where programming isn't measured with a traditional Nielsen metric (excluding Netflix’s NFL doubleheader).” The expert adds: “All of Disney combined for streaming and linear is like 2.5% [of the TV watching universe in the U.S]. Getting 20-30M people to watch something is a big deal, and the fact that [the CFP is] down is missing the point.” (link)

Colorado in FY24 reported $142M in revenue and $132M in expenses, increases of $25M and $5M, respectively. CU brought in $31.2M in football ticket sales from the 2023 season, cruising past the previous record of $16.57M set in 2021. The Buffs also reported a combined $16.7M in revenue from merchandise, licensing, sponsorships and game-day parking, concessions, etc. That number was also a record and nearly double the $8.9M from the previous year. CU’s conference distribution fell to $28.3M for the Buffs’ last year in the Pac-12, nearly $5M less than the previous year and about $7.5M less than CU budgeted for the year. The athletic department received ~$27.1M in institutional support, and Buffs Senior Assoc. AD for Business Operations Cory Hilliard says: “I think the biggest takeaway from all of this is that the collaboration in communication we’re having with the university and the finance leadership team under the university CFO is at an all-time high. With [Chancellor] Justin Schwartz’s involvement, it has been really proactive in looking at what’s coming and how the university can help support athletics in this new environment that all of us are entering, especially at the power four level.” (link)

The federal government’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has halted payments to all funded agencies and programs, including those previously approved but not yet disbursed, pursuant to an order from President Donald Trump. The funding sites shut down at 5 PM today, and James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis explains: “We recommend that entities who rely on this funding perform a cash flow analysis for donors, bankers and other funding sources. Banks may bridge the gap with a line of credit, and donors can offer short-term funding and possible long-term aid. This could have a large impact on education. Title IV funds are disbursed to institutions to apply to individual student accounts, and with spring semester drop/add likely wrapping up now, those payments could be put on hold until the review period is complete.” Davis adds that, per some sources, the order may not apply to Title IV funding, but “larger research institutions relying on funding from NIH and NSF could be significantly impacted.” (link)
|
Davis also links to a statement from NACUBO that reads, in part: “This latest order from the White House and the [OMB] will cause unnecessary disruption to the lives of tens of thousands of students and families at colleges and universities across the country—not to mention jeopardizing important and potentially lifesaving scientific and healthcare research taking place in labs and facilities. The overall impact to programs involving federal student aid from the Department of Education, and research funding from agencies like the [NIH] and the [NSF], could be both significant and chaotic. … We urge the Trump administration to reconsider and rescind this misguided policy." Hawaii Governor Josh Green wants to increase the budget for the new Aloha Stadium through donations, explaining that “we have $400M. Honestly, we’d do better to have somewhere between $600M and $800M at least to build a beautiful stadium that has a roof that can bring extra concerts. They can bring extra Olympic Trials and so on. … I’m meeting privately with some benefactors to see if they would help us fund additional resources. I’ve had some very good conversations. And hopefully, in the next couple of months, I can announce that.” (link)
