Carroll AD Charlie Gross chats with Embry-Riddle (AZ) AD Phil Hess on the NAIA-ADA’s first episode of NAIA's Timeout with an AD about the Fighting Saints being named the NAIA’s inaugural School of Character award winner. The foundation for Carroll’s embrace of the Champions of Character program comes from the vision, mission and guiding principles, in conjunction with the athletics code of conduct and the college’s value-based mission statement. The embrace of the platform begins in the interview process, where Gross says interviewees are required to answer how they will carry out the mission, vision and champions of character on a daily basis, and continues through performance evaluations, educational sessions with student-athletes, community service and more. More from Gross: “One of the keys that has helped us be consistent is choosing the right staff member to be your Champion of Character liaison, making it actually a part of their job responsibilities and duties and holding them accountable to staying current of what's coming out of the national office. I think that has probably been one of the instruments to make us live this out more on a daily basis.” (link)

The AFCA has retained the Chet Culver Group and Capitol Counsel lobbying firms, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who reports that “lobbying disclosures were submitted Jan. 17, and no other disclosures are listed for the AFCA, suggesting this is the first time the group has hired lobbyists in at least two decades. … Federal lobbying disclosures typically don’t go into specifics about the issues organizations are advocating for—but the forms noted that lobbyists would be working in Congress on the AFCA’s behalf for ‘improving the NIL [name, image, and likeness] program.’ The disclosures did not say how much the group was paying these two organizations.” Capitol Counsel counts Nike and the NFL among its clients. MIAA (NCAA DII) Commissioner Mike Racy sat down with D2.ticker's Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention to dive into Racy’s efforts to push for change in college athletics. Of note, one group Racy is engaged with is the college advisory board, facilitated by former Horizon League (NCAA DI) Commissioner Jon LeCrone: “It’s purpose is to bring representatives from FCS, Division II, Division III and even the NAIA around the table to talk about the future of college sports committed to an educational model. […] Who knows what college sports looks like. It may not be an NCAA blue disk and an NAIA logo both separately managing national governance intercollegiate athletic issues. There may be one body, the National Collegiate Organization, that has authority over all four-year colleges and universities that offer intercollegiate athletics and then how is that organized.” Full conversation on BOSCA. D.C. Decisions:
+ The Trump administration has removed NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo from her position. Abruzzo: “There’s no putting the genie back in the bottle. So, if the Agency does not fully effectuate its Congressional mandate in the future as we did during my tenure, I expect that workers with assistance from their advocates will take matters into their own hands in order to get well-deserved dignity and respect in the workplace, as well as a fair share of the significant value they add to their employers’ operations." (link)
+ The federal government’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has halted payments to all funded agencies and programs, including those previously approved but not yet disbursed, pursuant to an order from President Donald Trump. The funding sites shut down at 5 PM today, and James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis explains: “We recommend that entities who rely on this funding perform a cash flow analysis for donors, bankers and other funding sources. Banks may bridge the gap with a line of credit, and donors can offer short-term funding and possible long-term aid. This could have a large impact on education. Title IV funds are disbursed to institutions to apply to individual student accounts, and with spring semester drop/add likely wrapping up now, those payments could be put on hold until the review period is complete.” Davis adds that, per some sources, the order may not apply to Title IV funding, but “larger research institutions relying on funding from NIH and NSF could be significantly impacted.” (link)
+ Davis also links to a statement from NACUBO that reads, in part: “This latest order from the White House and the [OMB] will cause unnecessary disruption to the lives of tens of thousands of students and families at colleges and universities across the country—not to mention jeopardizing important and potentially lifesaving scientific and healthcare research taking place in labs and facilities. The overall impact to programs involving federal student aid from the Department of Education, and research funding from agencies like the [NIH] and the [NSF], could be both significant and chaotic. … We urge the Trump administration to reconsider and rescind this misguided policy." @1QLeadership Question: How much does an athletics director think about succession planning?
Alex Ricker-Gilbert, Senior Vice President and Athletic Director at Jacksonville University, discusses hiring coaches and succession planning with Lamarr Pottinger, Director of Leadership Development with the NCAA. Ricker-Gilbert has a process of identifying assistant coaches that could potentially be head coaches in the future and engaging with them regularly. He also talks about being aggressive with head coaches who show early signs of success, such as extending one Jacksonville head coach to a 10-year contract after his first year.
• "Will this person care more about our student-athletes as people than as athletes?" • "Tell us why you want to be at our institution" • "If you do a good job hiring, the rest of the leader's job is much easier."
Ricker-Gilbert believes upward mobility at Jacksonville is the department's competitive advantage. 🎥 on Youtube, Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

The American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon’s Imagining the Digital Future Center conducted a survey of 330 college presidents, provosts and other senior leaders to gather their thoughts on the impact AI is having on teaching and learning, and just 43% said their institution was ready to effectively use generative AI to prepare students for the future. The same percentage responded positively when asked if they were preparing faculty for teaching and mentoring with generative AI. When asked about challenges to adopting AI in courses, 93% cited faculty unfamiliarity with generative AI, and 84% cited lack of training and support. Regarding AI’s impact on campus, 45% thought it would be more positive than negative, 27% thought it would be equally positive and negative, 17 percent thought it would be negative and 10% said they didn’t know. Imagining the Digital Future Center Director Lee Rainie: “This is really an inflection point. What we see in these data is there are people who are gung-ho to move forward, and there are people who are terrified, who don’t know how to move forward or don’t want to move forward. That makes it sort of hard to figure out, as a broad class of institutions, where the future lies.” (link)
