NCAA Senior Vice President of Championships Lynda Tealer joins Connect’s Stephanie Garcia Cichosz to talk about her new role overseeing 84 championships, areas for improvement, continuing to focus on the student-athlete experience but broadening the scope to include coaches and their families, the future of championship selection and more. On broadening the scope for coaches and their families, Tealer explains they may only have one shot at a championship. “This might be a one-shot deal. Or it might be this year we had the first woman to lead a championship team in volleyball, so let's make sure that those coaches have an excellent experience as well as their student-athletes. … Knowing that this coaching is a lifestyle, and it's not just the coach that's involved in that, it's also their families. So, let's make sure we include families and celebrate them and allow them to really have that time with the coach and their family.” The NCAA will also focus on collecting feedback for finding the right cadence for championship selection, as Tealer notes some prefer the two-year process, because the data is more fresh, while others prefer four years for the lead time. “Perhaps the answer is it’s not the same for every sport. That would be different, but it’s certainly worth talking about.” (link)

Samford AD Martin Newton joins Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman to discuss his experience so far this season on the Men’s Basketball Committee. When it comes to balancing the analytics with the eye test, Newton explains: “The reality of it is the metrics matter, but if it’s all about metrics, then you really don’t need a 12-man committee. You could just put it in a computer and spit it out. So it's a nice balance. We take the metrics very seriously. You’re looking at all different metrics, whether it's the NET, whether it's the Palm, whether it's the Wins Against Bubble, so you’ve got all the different metrics that you could use, but at the end of the day you’ve got to watch a lot of basketball. You’ve got to understand the teams, you’ve got to know the teams, you've got to be able to evaluate those teams based on who they played, where they played, and how they did. And at the end of the day our job is to select the 37 best teams regardless of conference affiliation or anything else to make up the greatest sporting event in the world.” This year’s field presents a particular challenge due to the increased sizes of conferences, and Newton notes that “you may have some teams that have a losing conference record but are tournament-worthy for an at-large spot. So, it's going to be real challenging. And I think seeding is going to be very challenging this year – the bracketing principles, you don't want teams that are in the same conference that have played each other a couple of times to play early in the tournament. So there's going to be a lot of challenges.” More. (link)

Ole Miss is making some changes to the fan experience ahead of potential revenue-sharing, and On3’s Jake Thompson explains that “no changes are coming to how fans secure a tailgate setup when fans rush The Grove on Friday nights to claim their spots. But those who use a tent vendor service will see some financial changes. Vendors will have to pay a fee per game per 10x10 tent to the athletics department for each of their setups. The vendor’s fee is $150 per 10x10 tent in single-game setups and $100 per tent in full season setups. Rates do not change for conference home games.” Rebels AD Keith Carter: “We understand how important it is to preserve the unique character and traditions of The Grove, and the end-user experience should not change for the fans with this new structure. By continuing our relationships with local tent vendors, we hope to launch a profitable tailgating program as seamlessly as possible. Despite the additional charge, we are encouraging vendors to keep moderate prices for their customers while continuing to offer unique amenities.” Additionally, parking permits will have a required annual donation based on parking lot location. Carter: “This is an unprecedented time in our industry, and every athletics department in the country is implementing changes such as these in order to stay competitive. We understand the challenges it creates for our fans, and they are not decisions that we enter into lightly.” (link)

Texas Director of Swimming and Diving Bob Bowman tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger he’ll need to cut about 19 swimmers and divers to reach the SEC’s conference-wide limit of 22 if/when the House settlement goes into effect. “That’s going to be an agonizing process. It’s going to eliminate what I love most about coaching — developing a diamond in the rough.” Bowman also believes Olympic sports are in jeopardy under the House settlement, as there is a “huge incentive” for schools to cut non-revenue sports to reallocate the dollars to more popular and money-producing programs like football and men’s basketball. Warchant’s Ira Schoffel examines what the ACC-ESPN extension means for Florida State and notes that it comes as no surprise. “As plainly evident as the network has made it that the SEC is where they are directing most of their resources, that doesn’t mean they were going to willingly allow the ACC to implode. At least not until they have to. … Even if they believe the SEC is their golden goose, which they clearly do, their business model requires other products to sell. Not only are they trying to fill all of those channels with content on Saturdays, they’re constantly pushing to get games on weeknights as well. And even though we know the ACC Network isn’t nearly as profitable as the SEC Network, it still produces plenty of revenue — revenue that would be greatly diminished if the top brands were gone.” In speaking with sources, Schoffel has “gotten the impression that ESPN pushed to change some details in the contract to protect their interests in case the conference crumbles. If that information eventually comes to light, it’s a pretty strong confirmation that ESPN is uncertain about the league’s future. If not, then why would they push for that?” When it comes to potentially settling its lawsuit with Florida State, Schoffel believes FSU’s “leaders are resolved to fight as long as they need to in order to meet their two goals: Having the money to compete for national championships in football, and having a path into the CFP. … There’s no way Florida State can achieve both of those objectives in the ACC over the long term. The money simply won’t be there. It will never be there. Can the ACC make it happen in the short term by changing the revenue distributions and reducing the penalties for leaving? Maybe. That will be up to them to even make it an option.” (link)

Michigan finished FY24 with a $557K budget surplus on $238.86M in revenue and $238.3M in expenses. Support staff and administrative compensation accounted for the lion’s share of the revenue ($44.4M), an increase of nearly $3M in 2024. Coaching salaries ($41.3M) were the next largest expense, up almost $2M YoY. Athletic student aid ($33.9M) jumped almost $1.4M. The Wolverines also spent $17.5M on debt and rental payments for athletic facilities. On the revenue side, U-M brought in nearly $59M in ticket revenue, 95% of which came via football, men’s basketball and hockey. Media rights accounted for $50.8M in revenue. The department also received $44M in contributions (up $1.4M from FY23) and $34.4M in royalties. (link)

North Dakota State’s athletic endowment has reached nearly $111M, up from $38M since 2019 and $71M in 2022. Inforum’s Jeff Kolpack: “Broken down, the current portfolio is divided into $64.4M for scholarships and $40.1M for operations. Among other things, it’s helped take the pressure off of the Team Makers booster group from raising almost all of the athletic scholarship dollars.” Bison AD Matt Larsen: “That’s one of the things that differentiates NDSU from a lot of other places. We share that information among Valley schools and nobody is even close. We’ve been able to grow that.” Kolpack reports North Dakota’s athletic endowment is just over $49M while the market value of South Dakota State's at the close of 2024 was $22.4M. “NDSU’s endowment also helps offset its standing as the lowest state-allocated funded school in the Missouri Valley and Summit League, according to Division I figures compiled by USA Today. NDSU received $7.6M in institutional and state resources and student fees in 2023. Northern Iowa at $9.4M was the next lowest. SDSU was at $12.3M. UND was almost double of NDSU at $14.8M. Illinois State was the most with $20.9M of its $29.9M total budget coming from government or school funds.” (link)

CBS’ Richard Johnson reviewed four athlete compensation agreements to shed light on how schools are preparing for the coming revenue-sharing possibility. Two agreements involve football players at separate Big Ten schools, one at an SEC school, and another at a Big 12 school. “The Big 12 school's agreement is the most straightforward. The player signed two agreements regarding his NIL rights: One is with the school's collective through the NIL platform Opendorse, covering compensation through June. The second kicks in afterward -- an agreement between the athlete and the school itself, co-signed by the school's athletic director. The latter is what the House settlement allows schools to provide. Both agreements serve as term sheets in lieu of long-form contracts, which will come later. The Big 12 athlete will receive equal monthly payments from July through November, but the deal is backloaded. In December, he will earn a standard month's pay plus a 150% increase – essentially a bowl bonus. This structure helps address postseason participation concerns in college football.” In the Big Ten agreement, the collective portion lasts through June, and the school agreement takes over in July. “December payments are equal, but not paid out until Dec. 31, 2025, or 10 days after the team's last game – whichever is later – to ensure participation in a January bowl game or the College Football Playoff. The SEC school's agreement only covers the collective portion. In the SEC agreement, the player has signed a deal with the school's collective via an NIL platform. The second Big Ten school is expected to route most of the payments through the collective while using the $21.5M in revenue-sharing funds to reward top performers.” More. (link)

Arkansas lawmakers are still mulling House Bill 1044, which would allow Arkansas and other state schools to set up a 50/50 raffle to support NIL, but there have been some changes to the bill’s language due to potential legal concerns. Representative RJ Hawk (R-Bryant), the bill’s lead sponsor, explains there are “no substantial changes. It's just making sure that this thing, if it were ever to get challenged in a court that it would hold up. We're just making sure all our I's are dotted and T's are crossed. … As long as we can get it out [of the rules committee] in the month of February. We'll be good to go." Hawk also notes that from his understanding, Arkansas and other schools “will be ready that the minute this becomes law, they're ready to roll. I can't speak for them as far as where they are in the process, but based on my conversations it seems like that once this becomes law, they'll be ready to rock and roll." (link)

With objections to the House settlement due today, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger digs into those on the verge of being pushed out of the system. Auburn swim student-athlete Keaton Rice previously signed a five-year grant-in-aid agreement with the Tigers, but may see it disappear if he’s not part of the 22-man team, a roster figure that’s down from 42. Rice’s mother, Heather, “For my son, this was a lock deal and now they are saying because they want to pay a bunch of football and basketball players, we are the ones screwed.” MoloLamken attorney Steve Molo says his firm is working with over 100 student-athletes impacted by the settlement & will file an official objection today: “We have a very robust objection. The standard of a settlement is that it needs to be fair, adequate and reasonable. This is not. [...] The roster limits are creating havoc everywhere” Lead plaintiff attorney Jeffrey Kessler: “None of these objections change the fact that this settlement is overwhelmingly in the best interest of the class. That’s the only question for the judge. [...] The vast majority of class members support the settlement and want to get paid. We will have, at best, objections from a tiny percentage.” George Mason Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Jay Hosack chimes in: “Why can’t we figure out a way to let these kids on rosters be able to go to complete their collegiate career and graduate in the normal timeframe. Give us some time to manage that instead of cutting us off at the knees.” More. (link)

One Power 4 General Manager tells On3’s Pete Nakos he could see roster budgets exceeding $30M for next football season. Another industry source on the topic: “Most schools will be in the mid-teens and maybe pushing $20 million because they’re going to be trying to chase where Ohio State and Texas were over the last year. But to think that the market at large is going to start pushing north of $20 and into $30 in that quick of a time frame is naive. Now that ups the ante for everybody else.” Another perspective, this one from an NIL collective operator: “Unlimited mobility is what provides the marketplace. The fact that they have unlimited mobility is always going to drive the market up. … If we’re sitting here this time next year, and we’re in the same model, will some schools top $30 million? Absolutely. What’s the difference between $24 and $30 million to those guys? I don’t know.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde digs into the investigation currently underway into alleged game-fixing in the NBA and college hoops that has a grand jury convened and multiple jurisdictions involved. Forde: “Beyond the NBA, the federal probe is believed to involve as many as seven college programs, sources say. The schools are primarily from the mid-major and low-major ranks, with players allegedly involved in gambling on their own games or trying to alter the outcome of games during the 2023–24 season. The Eastern District of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Attorney’s office is handling the inquiry into suspicious wagering activity on at least one Temple men’s basketball game last March … A player at the center of that inquiry is former Temple guard Hysier ‘Fabb’ Miller, who was the Owls’ leading scorer last season. … Representatives from several schools believed to have players or games under scrutiny tell SI they’ve not been contacted by either investigators or NCAA enforcement representatives. One source familiar with the investigations said the belief is the NCAA is letting the criminal inquiries take precedence. That is consistent with the association’s handling of a previous federal investigation of corruption in college basketball that began in 2017 and lingered over the sport for several years.” From the NCAA: “The NCAA takes sports betting very seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athlete well-being and the integrity of competition. The Association works with integrity monitoring services, state regulators and other stakeholders to conduct appropriate due diligence whenever suspicious reports are received. Due to confidentiality rules put in place by NCAA member schools, the NCAA will not comment on current, pending or potential investigations.” (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch estimates that the Tigers are approximately $35M below the average revenue generated of other SEC schools. Part of that stems from donations covering football and men’s basketball ticketing, as opposed to being separated by sport - which is the plan moving forward. Mizzou will also focus on establishing a lifetime giving society and motivating lifetime philanthropy. Veatch expects the Tigers to have roster restrictions next year, which could bring the total number of student-athletes from 550 to 450, but the department will use a “financial lens to determine what the distribution of scholarship amounts will be.” (link)
|
Ole Miss AD Keith Carter talks with the Daily Journal’s Michael Katz about the Rebels’ revenue-sharing plans and explains: “The way I envision it is that at some point, we’ll tell football ‘Here’s your number.’ We’ll tell men’s basketball ‘Here’s your number,’ on down the line. And so they’ll have a number, just like they do their recruiting budget or their travel budget or their staff salary budget. … [Senior Assoc. AD for Strategy and Cap Management Matt McLaughlin’s] charge will be then to ensure that they follow that and that he works with them to stretch the dollar as far as it can go.” Carter also said of the Department of Education’s recent Title IX guidance regarding revenue-sharing: “We’re monitoring that, obviously, and I think it’s probably too early to really make a comment on it. But, obviously, we saw that last week and are factoring that into a lot of our discussions and monitoring where that might end up. But our goal is – this is revenue sharing – and we have sports that make revenue and some that don’t, and so we’re trying to just figure out the right balance for what that means. And our goal would be to certainly, whether it’s through rev share or scholarship, additional resources and other ways, we want to make sure that we’re helping all of our sports and help them remain competitive.” (link)

New Marquette AD Mike Broeker on how industry changes are impacting the AD chair: “I think the challenge that’s creating all sorts of pressure on our industry is that running and operating at the elite level of college basketball is going to get more expensive with revenue sharing, if the House Settlement gets approved. So you know how are we going to absorb that? What does that look like? We have our own initiative going through on campus (strategic plan) 2031, where we’re trying to create some transformational change, and we’ve spoken within that. We have spoken specifically within that plan to how we transform athletics to not only grow and thrive, but be more sustainable for the university. So those things are really running parallel to one another. And we’ve been engaged in some of that work over the last six to eight months and we’re going to continue to do that. Within that there are 1000 micro challenges, but it all comes around the idea of we’ve got to find ways to operate as a business but never, never, never stray from our core responsibility, which is developing students through sport. [...] I think it’s a little bit like going through COVID where you have nothing to lean on in the past that can help you at least set some direction on where you’re going. So more than anything, what you have to do is have the humility to say at any moment’s time we may have to pivot. So we could build a great financial plan and something can happen and we have to have the humility to say, you know what, we have to pivot.” (link)
|
Western Kentucky AD Todd Stewart provides his view of the potential House settlement: “If you don’t opt in, you can’t do anything. If you do opt in, then that just gives you flexibility to do things.” Stewart also says Conference USA is in “a much better place” than back in 2021, still points to issues with travel & missed class time: “There’s certainly some unintended consequences of that (the geography of CUSA). It’s a challenge and I give our athletes and coaches [credit] for the way they deal with that.” (link)

In examining Omaha’s Bring Your Own Trashcan promotion, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports that “I’ve heard from so many ADs over the last few years that the season ticket crowd for college basketball games tends to skew older. Much older. Like, median season ticket holder being well north of 60 years old, kind of older. If that situation describes your program, it’s critical to find ways to get new people into the building and fall in love with the experience of attending a live basketball game. Having a winning basketball program certainly helps, but winning 22 games alone doesn’t guarantee a packed house, especially if the school is in a large city with other universities or entertainment options. Schools also have to sell the experience, which sometimes means standing on your head a little bit to get butts in the seats. … Do I think any single promotion will save a basketball program? No. And Lord knows every athletic office has boxes and boxes of unused plastic giveaway trinkets that people left in their seats. But the name of the game is to get people to fall in love with the experience and get them coming back, and sometimes, you gotta get them in the door with a giant-ass garbage can full of popcorn.” (link)

A parody Mississippi Valley State men’s basketball account has increased its following 170x since November by mixing “typical where-to-watch posts with DMs to opponent pages, frank criticism of the NCAA’s ranking system, highlight clips with scores blacked out and dunks on other teams, from No. 8 University of Tennessee to the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers,” according to Sportico’s Jacob Feldman, who notes the account has more than 7,300 followers and nearly 20M total impressions less than six months after launching. The account, @MVSUMBB, it turns out, is actually run by an Arizona State journalism student named Oliver Fell, who tells Feldman: “From September through now, I’ve been kind of playing the long con.” Feldman explains the “first few posts are the most mundane, honoring #CollegeColorsDay and sharing purported arena bag policies. Fell sprung for X verification ($8/month) to make the page look more legitimate. The account first went viral as MVSU lost to Missouri, 111-39, in November. Or as @MVSUMBB reported, MVSU – 39, Missouri – More than that. An individual post surpassed 1M views on X that night.” The account has drawn the interest of some Delta Devil players, one of whom even invited Fell to a game. Fell says: “Regardless of if it’s a real account or not, it is getting their film out there. A lot of these guys…maybe want to transfer up, and getting that film in front of millions of people is about as much as they could ask for.” (link)
