“This is not a one and done. This has to be the new normal for us. … We’re going to keep our foot on the gas and hopefully be here a lot more often. I believe we have the perfect coach for Notre Dame. What [Football Head Coach] Marcus [Freeman] does on the field and off the field, he’s accepting everything that Notre Dame is. You don’t want to play Notre Dame football to do just OK or be respected. We want to win national championships. So I really do think we’re all in, provided it’s still a student-athlete experience.” That’s Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua on the success of the Fighting Irish football team this year. Bevacqua, who will sometimes start staff meetings with the Rev. Ted Hesburgh quote, “There is no academic virtue in playing mediocre football,” adds: “I don’t think anybody shies away from the fact that Notre Dame football is really important to Notre Dame. And that a rising tide lifts all ships. If you’re walking around South Bend or Beijing and you have that ND on, people know what it is. That has a lot to do with the reputation of the school, but it also has a lot to do with the history of this football program. … There is chaos. If you look at the history of chaos, strong entities get stronger during chaotic times. I think Notre Dame is a very strong entity. I don’t think our university has ever been stronger in terms of our reputation. I think we’re financially secure. We know who we are.” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene during a radio interview yesterday morning: “Right now, the best way that we can acquire talent — and the national landscape acquires talent — is through money. It used to be about scholarships and facilities and some of the shiny stuff. It went from glitz and glam to green. We are paying student-athletes. That’s the name of the game. [...] We have to treat our operation more as a business, which means we are going to make more transactional decisions. That is in large part antithetical to why I got into this business, but it’s the realities of where we are. If we’re going to be in the game, let’s play the game. [...] Our differentiator is our ability as a department to squeeze all the juice out of the orange that we can, from being responsible with our expenses. And also having the university help us with those expenses. In order for us to be successful at the highest level, we have to rev share at the highest level. Depending on the set of circumstances, we may have to provide more resources, more cash, more money to student-athletes to acquire their talents.” (link)

Per Indiana AD Scott Dolson: “We’re committed. You have to be.” That despite recent budget blips for the Hoosiers, which included internal layoffs & a loan from central campus. Dolson points to the personal seat licensing initiative for IU football that should generate upwards of $3M in revenue annually. The per-seat fee will range from $0 in the upper corners of Memorial Stadium to $250 for lower levels between the 30-yard lines. Dolson: “All these decisions are tough. We really have to spend hours and hours wringing our hands over to decide what the right move is. We love the strong family atmosphere at Memorial Stadium and we want our long-time fans to still enjoy games. We don’t want to price anybody out.” Dolson also says overall prices will still be in the bottom third of the Big Ten & there are no immediate plans to move to a seat license structure for men’s hoops inside Assembly Hall. (link)

Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg is ready to put last year’s subpar football season behind him: “I do feel like everybody is starting to turn the page. The conference will release the schedule, and (fans) will start to think about the games and where they want to travel next fall.” The Pokes will increase football season ticket prices for 2025, though Weiberg says the exact bumps have yet to be determined. More: “We’ve got to rally. I really believe they will be there. They’ve been outstanding the last couple of years, with the sellouts of all of the games.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake writes that from a media value perspective, it may not matter which school(s) are added to the Pac-12. Canzano gets this from a source after last week’s Pac-12 meetings: “The feedback we’re getting from prospective media partners is that there isn’t one expansion addition that clearly stands out above the others.” Canzano goes on to review the possibilities of UNLV (lawsuit complications), Nevada (only if paired with UNLV), Memphis and/or Tulane (travel issues, plus, “I’ve been repeatedly told by a variety of well-placed sources that Memphis and Tulane only work for the Pac-12 at the right number.”). Also: “Sacramento State is not an option. Get it out of your mind.” (link)

With ESPN picking up its option on the ACC’s media rights, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down what it means for Cal and Stanford and observes: “This is not 2005, when Cal had Marshawn Lynch, or 2015, when Christian McCaffrey played for Stanford. Football has lost relevance on both campuses at precisely the time it has become more critical than ever within the college sports ecosystem. … In our view, the next rupture point is 2028-29, when the Big Ten likely will assess its membership situation in advance of media rights negotiations for the contract cycle that begins in the summer of 2030.” Meanwhile, regarding the partial revenue shares Cal and Stanford are receiving: “Our rough estimates, which are based on ACC media revenue projections, suggest each school will take home $195M less in distributions than the legacy ACC schools over the nine-year period. And that’s before the ‘brand’ distribution model takes effect. Both athletic departments will receive financial assistance from central campus, and they must double down on fundraising efforts, as well. … It’s a tangled web, for sure. The steps required to pacify Clemson and Florida State and maintain peace in the ACC will make it more difficult for the Bears and Cardinal to compete. But at least their new home should remain intact for the rest of the decade.” (link)

MIAA (DII) Commissioner Mike Racy joins D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi to discuss the current NCAA governance setup and explains he’s been working with an advisory board led by SP Athletics Partner/former Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone. “And that group is still getting started and still trying to figure out you know what it looks like but its real purpose is to bring representatives from FCS, Division II, Division III and even the NAIA around the table to talk about the future of college sports. … Jon is well-connected throughout all of college sport, especially Division I, and he's had conversations with Amy Perko and the Knight Commission and other thought leaders about what this group is.” Racy adds: “I think everyone recognizes that the NCAA is kind of a little paralyzed right now with the litigation and waiting for the House settlement and it’s hard to get too far out in front on some of these issues, but someone needs to. Someone needs to be having conversations about ‘This is what college sports could look like. Division I schools, if you don't want to opt in, here are some options of what you could do with football or maybe some other sports and continue to be a part of Division I basketball. No one's thinking about that. We need people to.” With the future yet to be written, Racy submits college sports leadership “may not be an NCAA blue disc and an NAIA logo separately managing national governance intercollegiate athletic issues. There may be one body…that has authority over all four-year colleges and universities that offer intercollegiate athletics.” Under the current format, Racy believes it’s unlikely DI schools will move down to DII, but “if we can get people in a room and they can think about maybe a different organization of the NCAA, then yes. An archaic rule is you can have two of your sports at the DI level except for football and basketball. Well, maybe we need to rethink that in football. Maybe there's a different championship of football that the NCAA helps create and DI and DII members that want to be a part of that can do that without it affecting their other divisional affiliations.” (link)

Texas Tech Men’s Basketball student-athlete JT Toppin was ejected from the Red Raiders’ game against Houston yesterday and not long thereafter, so was HC Grant McCasland. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt did not agree with the call. “I am appalled and disappointed by the official's egregious decision to eject JT Toppin from tonight's game against Houston. This decision, made on a play that was clearly accidental and without intent, is unacceptable. Immediately after the ejection, I spoke with [Big 12] Commissioner [Brett] Yormark, who assured me that the situation would be addressed and there would be accountability. On behalf of Red Raider Nation, we are extremely proud of our team and the leadership of Coach McCasland.” (link)

Arizona State Men’s Basketball HC Bobby Hurley waved his players off the floor after the game at Arizona yesterday to prevent any further escalation of emotions between the two squads. Hurley, who said the Wildcats chirped the whole game, clarified afterwards: “Right near our bench, it was relentless, constant chatter from a couple of Arizona's players that wasn't being policed properly. Of course, they're going to be happy with winning, but it was done with no class, in my opinion.” Arizona HC Tommy Lloyd: “Obviously, it's disappointing, probably on all sides. When tough things happen, we want to be a program that responds with class, and I don't know if we did or didn't. But it was a tough moment in an emotional game. I've got a lot of respect for Bobby and Arizona State's players.” (link)

Nebraska will likely not hold a football spring game because of HC Matt Rhule’s concern about other teams poaching his players. Rhule: “The word 'tampering' doesn't exist anymore. It's just an absolute free open common market. I don't necessarily want to open up to the outside world and have people watch our guys and say, 'He looks like a pretty good player. Let's go get him.'" Following last year’s spring game, Rhule notes “I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that. So you go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.” (link, link)

NIL lawsuits against Florida Football HC Billy Napier and Florida State Men’s Basketball HC Leonard Hamilton put front-and-center Florida’s sovereign immunity law, which shields the state and its agencies from civil liability in most cases. Sportico’s Daniel Libit observes that “attempting to circumvent this defense, the athletes suing Hamilton argue that if the coach is considered an employee of any relevant entity, it should be Seminole Boosters Inc.—the FSU athletic fundraising organization that operates as its own distinct 501(c)(3) charitable organization—since a portion of its annual disbursements go to help supplement his and other FSU coaches’ compensation.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who represents the FSU players: “We took a proactive approach. If there is a challenge [as to whether Hamilton] is an employee of the university or of a separate organization, the mechanism by which he is paid is relevant.” Attorney Eugene Egdorf, who has represented several student-athletes in lawsuits against universities, adds: “If the schools are indeed funding NIL, sovereign immunity will be a huge issue that the athletes must consider. In a state like Texas, your NIL deal may be entirely unenforceable. Even in the instance of collectives, lawyers will argue they are facilitated with the schools and have protections. If I was advising an athlete, I would certainly tell them to factor these concerns in the decision where to play.” Beyond players, Marty Greenberg, a seasoned sports lawyer who has represented dozens of college coaches, tells Libit he would strongly advise his clients at Texas public universities to negotiate an immunity waiver in their contracts. “Who the hell would want to coach in Texas if they knew they’d never get their day in court?” More from Libit. @1QLeadership Question: How does a Vice President of Student Affairs develop a philosophy on college athletics?
Sarah Comstock, VP for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at University of Puget Sound, discusses how she developed her philosophy on athletics after the department was recently reassigned to report to her. She talks about her input in creating a profile for hiring a new director of athletics. Comstock also gives insight into the importance of the position and how athletics fits into the mission of the university.
• Student-Athletes make up 33% of students on campus
• Rewriting Student Affairs strategic plan to include the student-athlete experience
Comstock talks about studying other schools and figuring out what works best for Puget Sound in terms of leadership for the department. 🎥 here, on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

The NCAA will settle an antitrust lawsuit filed by four states and the District of Columbia, per Sportico's Michael McCann, who adds: "The settlement is expected to remove a potential complication for the NCAA as it seeks to convince U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken to grant final approval of the settlement resolving the House, Carter and Hubbard antitrust litigations. In Tennessee et. al v. NCAA, a group of attorneys general maintain that NCAA member schools and conferences have illegally conspired through NCAA rules to restrain how recruits can discuss opportunities with NIL collectives. At issue is the so-called 'NIL recruiting ban' wherein the NCAA prohibits the use of NIL contracts as a recruiting inducement." As of now, the parties have signed a term sheet, with the settlement to be finalized by March 17. More. (link)

House settlement objections were filed in droves before last night’s deadline. Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich with more yeoman's work on all the arguments, including push back from the likes of law firm MoloLamken, LSU Women’s Gymnastics student-athlete Livvy Dunne, Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos, over two dozen Arizona State student-athletes, O’Bannon family members, hundreds of additional student-athletes & even seventh-grader Natalie Aznar Klein who is potentially in the injunctive class. There’s also a group of 67 former student-athletes, led by former Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill, who have opted out of the settlement with aims of separately suing on similar grounds. Of particular note on the objections, Dunne notes a lack of clarity on calculations for lost NIL opportunities, plus student-athletes not having enough representation in the process. Lots of objections from Olympic sport student-athletes & their parents on the negative impact of roster limits. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “It’s really hard to predict what the judge will do with these objections. But I do believe some of the arguments raised and the volume of objections may give her pause in granting final approval. The possibility she wouldn’t grant final approval has always existed.” Tons more from Ehrlich, Winter, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz & the team at Sportico. (link, link, link, link, link)

South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati in a radio interview this week was asked whether having Football HC Shane Beamer and Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley close to signing contract extensions played a role in his decision to make the move to Columbia. “Maybe a little bit, just in the sense that you want to go to places that have, they’re on a good trajectory. Candidly, I don’t know that I would have been as interested if the programs weren’t going in a good direction. And I really felt like they were, and obviously football is a king and that’s what we’re going to make most of our economic decisions around. And so to see the success they were having and obviously I was following the games this fall and really liked Shane as a coach. … So, yeah, it definitely played a factor and I was, I would say that the success of the football program was one of the big decisions or one of the key points to make that decision.” Donati on potential upgrades to and around Williams-Brice Stadium: “I mean, it’s no secret, I think we have 18 suites, it’s the last in the conference. I think Arkansas, for example, has 184. We have the fewest premium seat offerings. So why is that important? Well, that’s a lot of revenue that could be used to reinvest in the department. … I don’t know how many schools really have the opportunity to build what we could potentially build. So that’s a really big opportunity for us. Obviously nothing has been approved yet and we’ve had some great conversations internally and even with the Board. I’m very optimistic that we will have a plan to do this and I think taking more of a holistic look at the stadium.” (link)

More from new Marquette AD Mike Broeker as he takes over in Milwaukee, this time on how the Golden Eagles are thinking about budget constraints given the potential House settlement & coming revenue sharing with student-athletes: “We haven’t really charted the path as to how we’re going to be more sustainable and more efficient yet. We’re considering a number of strategic measures now. I said this last week, we have to come together and accept our reality but not allow it to drive our future, right. We have the ability to shape our future. One of the things I’m trying to be most committed to is not just making assumptions cause I’ve been here 21 years, right? I want to see this department through the lens that I have now. I want to reengage with my teammates and ask some questions and get some thoughts that maybe they had not shared with me in the past given my role. And then really, I’ve done little of this right now outside of informally over the years with athletic directors around the sport of basketball, talk to the other directors in the league about how they’re thinking about things. I feel like in higher ed, we’re all going through the same challenges and if we can come together as a conference, we might be able to help create some solutions that makes sense for all of our student athletes.” (link)

Tulsa AD Justin Moore met with local media late in the week to discuss key issues impacting the industry. Overall: “I think the next five to six years is really important for TU athletics and for TU in general, because I think college athletics itself is changing so much, and I think we've got a window to really get as healthy as we can be so, that we have a lot of as many options as we can, when whatever changes happen and make sure we're on the right side of whatever that looks like. So I think to be fair to [Football Head] Coach [Tre] Lamb and to [Men’s Basketball Head] Coach [Eric] Konkol, we've got to get better over the next five years or so. We're not gonna win every game right away. We understand that, but we've just got to continue to work to get better and better and put the right things in place to give us the type of program that can win at that level and win at that level over time and not just do it on one year. We've got to build programs that can sustain success over time.” (link)

Iowa will retire former women’s basketball student-athlete Caitlin Clark’s jersey tomorrow and Hawkeyes AD Beth Goetz explains why the celebration is so soon after the completion of Clark’s playing days in Iowa City: “It’s nice to be able to celebrate somebody in the moment — as close to that moment as you can because you don’t always have that opportunity. So, we’re doing it quickly here, but it’s also a wonderful homecoming for her and an opportunity for our fan base to get a chance to celebrate her again.” (link)

Indiana’s athletic department got a $26M loan from campus in FY24 to assist in covering the transition costs of a new football staff. In total, campus sent a record $34.3M to athletics, topping the previous high of $3.07M from 2017. The loan will be paid back with interest and AD Scott Dolson confirms the Hoosiers have already secured enough in pledged donations to cover the cost of those repayments. More on the financial relationship. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand writes on the ESPN-ACC extension: “...nine more years at the same rate the conference agreed to back in 2016. (Given all the entanglements with ACC Network, it’s difficult to come up with a straight rights-fee number for this deal. But the deal was believed to be in the neighborhood of $240 million per year when it was first signed, back when the ACC had 14 schools.) [...] One other sweetener for ESPN: The ACC is committed to schedule its better teams (FSU, Clemson, Miami (FL)) against Notre Dame, which is a league member for non-football sports. In the past, the Irish played lesser teams, such as Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, and Cal.” (link)

TCU has unveiled its 10-year strategic plan, and Senior Deputy AD for External Affairs Ryan Peck set the direction for the plan’s athletic pillar. He explains that “here we are developing a 10-year strategic plan where in 10 weeks it may look different – or, in 10 days, athletics could be drastically different in this chaos. We drill(ed) down on initiatives and goals so that we can be aligned as we move forward (and) continue to be successful in the ever-changing landscape.” Peck says the athletic department looked at how the athletic pillar connects to other TCU priorities, such as the research opportunities that athletes can engage in, potential community partnerships with student athletes and what a growing student body means for use of athletics facilities. The plan also calls for enrollment to increase by 5K. (link)

Vanderbilt students reflect on last week’s $500K court storming and Commodores AD Candice Story Lee’s request for it not to happen. Senior Alex Kurbegov on the moment the Kentucky game was over: “There were a few seconds there where it was like, ‘Uh, what do we do?’ But when we saw the band running on, people from under the baskets, we were gone. At the end of the day, we did not listen to her. However, we did not lead the charge.” Nashville native and self-described Vandy super fan Joseph West: “Moving forward, now that you’ve stormed the court against No. 6 and No. 9, your record is good, you’re setting up to make the NCAA tournament, I think you expect to win. To that end, I don’t think you should storm the court anymore, and I think the money does come into play. You have to be smart. NIL matters a lot. … Okay, okay, pure hypothetical, No. 1 Auburn comes in and we knock them down, I’ll be on that floor. I’ll be dancing on the V at the center of the court. I know! I know! I am contradicting myself. … But it’s No. 1 Auburn! How do you not storm the court if you beat No. 1 Auburn?” (link)

Oklahoma State gets approval from the Board of Trustees for a new video board to be installed at softball’s Cowgirl Stadium, with the installation starting this spring. AD Chad Weiberg: “It took a little longer to get things moving than we wanted, but we’ve had some donors step up to help make that possible. That will be a really good improvement for that program, and something that’s been a priority for them.” Of note from Weiberg as well, given the plans to build a new stadium: “We’re doing it with the idea in mind that we can move it with the finished product.” (link)
