The CCAA selects World Team Tennis COO Hardison as its next commissioner, starting July 1. Cal Poly Humboldt President/CCAA Board of Presidents Chair Jackson: "Strengthening the student-athlete experience throughout the CCAA is critically important. That, along with Allen's ability to articulate his ideas on how to elevate the conference nationally while building strong relationships will help make him a great leader for the CCAA today. Earlier this month, the DII Membership Committee reviewed survey results regarding the elimination of the Institutional Self-Study Guide and what may replace it as 54% of commissioners and ADs see a need for a self-assessment requirement. 56% of leaders that disagree feel there should be other tools developed to self-assess. The majority of those who see the need for self-assessment requirements (53%) believe it should be best practice as opposed to legislated (26%) or policy (21%). The committee also recommended provisional membership process changes: removing the ISSG from the process, due to duplicative work, and requiring the AD to attend the NCAA Inclusion Forum once during a school’s provisional membership. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved three new rules recommended by the Football Rules Committee last month, including keeping the clock running after first downs except for the last two minutes of each half; no consecutive timeouts by a team; and penalties at the end of the first and third quarters carrying over to the next quarter, eliminating untimed downs in those instances. Teams will also be given the option for instant replay for games without an instant replay booth official, after the MIAA’s successful pilot last season. (link)

The RMAC will be the first DII conference to sponsor the NCAA emerging sport, while participants will advance to the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship. Oklahoma Baptist experienced the “worst natural disaster” in university history after a tornado hit campus on Wednesday. A number of facilities were impacted, including the FB stadium, T&F complex, Baseball and Softball stadiums, but thankfully no students were injured. (link, link)

Simon Fraser will appoint a special advisor “to review and make recommendations regarding potential sustainable opportunities for football,” while reiterating “All parties agree there is no path forward for SFU to play varsity football in the NCAA. We will not be playing varsity football in the fall of this year.” The injunction hearing is scheduled for May 3. Further B.C. Lions Owner Doman and his friends will match FB donations to $500K per year for the next five years, with Doman calling for donations on Save SFU Football Day on April 25. (link, link)

Minnesota Crookston selects Bridgeport WBB AC Moynihan as its next HC. AD Helgeson: “Natalie impressed us with her energy, drive, and enthusiasm. We were also impressed with her thorough and well-thought-out plan to build on the successes the women's basketball program has had at the University of Minnesota Crookston. We are excited to see the work and care Natalie and staff will put into the Golden Eagle women's basketball program as head coach. A number of Nebraska-Kearney professors and trainers have penned a study, “Exploring the mental health needs of university student-athletes during COVID-19.” The study examined 166 DII student-athletes and found a “significant decrease in anxiety and depression symptoms among the sample athletes as pandemic restrictions decreased,” and that “athletes involved in team meetings reported higher levels of worry, concentration disruption and somatic anxiety.” More on the latter point: “the hypothesis that student-athletes would experience more positive reactions to competition as the pandemic restrictions decreased was not supported. The timing of the release of the athletic department’s wellness survey may partially explain the lack of relationship. This study examined responses across three different semesters from athletes at various stages in their athletic seasons. Their reactions to competition may be at least somewhat dependent on the current stage in their season rather than the current stage of the pandemic.” Full paper. (link)

The Wrestling Rules Committee made several recommendations for the 2023-24 season, including making all takedowns worth 3 points, eliminating the one-touch takedown, changing the way wrestlers can earn riding time, providing the referee with the authority to confirm or overturn all calls or missed calls during a video review challenged sequence, and eliminating the rule limiting all facial hair to a half-inch. Rider (DI) HC/Committee Chair Hangey: “Wrestling is in a time of need to change. We felt like something this significant would give a boost to the sport for viewership for the average fan and for longtime traditional fans. It will increase excitement and scoring. It will change tactics for coaches and kids. … When the 3-point line was implemented in basketball, everyone hated it at first. We are trying to evolve the sport of wrestling. We want to bring more fans to the sport without impacting the integrity of the sport." (link)

The Oklahoma House and Senate have both approved a change to the state's NIL law, USA Today’s Berkowitz reports, noting that the bill says a “college athletic association (read: NCAA) ‘shall not prohibit a postsecondary institution from identifying, facilitating, enabling, or supporting opportunities for a student athlete to earn compensation for the student athlete’s name, image, or likeness activities.’” The law also states it should not be construed as recognizing student-athletes as employees and that all relationships between student-athletes and agents should be in writing, clearly describe the obligations of both parties and outline fees for the professional representation. The bill now awaits Governor Stitt’s signature. (link)

The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources has released a report covering the pay, size, diversity and overall demographics of the higher ed admissions workforce. Chief Admissions Officers earn a median salary of $103K, while Deputy Head of Student Admissions posts come with a median salary of $65K and Head of Student Admissions positions have a median salary of $71K. Also from the report: “The representation of people of color notably declines from coordinators and counselors (31% people of color) to heads of admissions (23% people of color). There is also a small decline in the representation of people of color from heads of admissions (23% people of color) to chief admissions officers (21% people of color).” Full report. (link)
