Toledo AD Bryan Blair was asked by the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs whether the Rockets would consider private equity offers in the future and responded: “I think we’re all looking at every single option to create more revenue, and to navigate the times we’re in. I don’t know if private equity is the answer just yet, but I think you've got to vet every option and it's time to really think outside the box – to think in terms of what some of these ideas could be and what they could mean for Toledo. This place is amazing and we've done some really neat things, but we have not reached our true potential. So we're constantly looking at options and ways to actualize that potential and serve the greater university's initiative. Now is the time to get all the ideas on the table.” (link)

Penn State has announced the creation of ROAR Solutions, a group of resources aimed at delivering “the best student-athlete endorsement and support in the country.” ROAR Solutions will consist of five core initiatives: Nittany Lion Club Sport Excellence Funds, The Brand Academy, DisruptU, Happy Valley United and Playfly Max. Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft: "This is not the time to rest on our achievements. We must act boldly, providing our athletes with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in this evolving landscape." (link, link)

Little Rock AD Frank Cuervo joins Talk Business & Politics to discuss the changes in college sports and remarks: “I’m not sure there’s been this much disruption and change since the advent of Title IX nearly 50 years ago. And there were a lot of good things that came from that. Women’s sports have exploded and it was really a seminal time for college sports and athletics in general. So I’m hopeful that once some of the tides settle that we’ll be in a similar position and that this era will produce the type of positive results that the Title IX era did.” Still, Cuervo admits the “ground under our feet is not particularly stable right now. … I think once [the House settlement is] brought to some fruition and there’s some finality there, then we can really start to plan and decide what our new normal is.” If/when House is settled, Cuervo would like to bring NIL operations in-house and explains: “As an institution, as a university, and an athletics program, we will be able to work directly with a student athlete to, in effect, extend their scholarship. Not only to include, you know, room, board, tuition and fees, but also to include name, image, and likeness rights. So that’s a significant change. I think actually bringing it in-house and allowing the institutions to administer it is a step toward providing some guardrails…[it] will allow us to have a degree of control. We’ll be able to work with our student athletes to administer that, bring some uniformity to it across all sectors of college athletics to make sure that it’s actually happening for the right reasons.” (link)

More from Marquette AD Mike Broeker’s sitdown with Paint Touches, during which he said the following about MTEs with NIL attached, ala the Player’s Era Festival: “We have a commitment already for next year for an MTE, we just haven’t announced it yet. So I’m not going to break that news here. I think we have to be open-minded about everything and scheduling. If I’ve learned anything from working with Shaka over the last four years, he’s increased my, I would say, open mindedness when it comes to evaluating things. If that opportunity came along, we’d have to evaluate it. And the other thing you have to remember too is, and we just talked about this a little while ago, Fiserv’s an incredibly important place for us. We’re doing things we’ve never done before and that has a great impact on our business. It’s always in our best interest from a business standpoint to play as many home games as we can. So when you start to think about the kind of the model we’ve been in the last couple years, having that 17 home game marker on any given year is a good thing for us financially, right? And then on the years when we want to host that game at the Al [McGuire Center], do we have an opportunity to augment that and still stay at 17? How do we schedule so it’s that and then play these quality home and homes that Shaka’s played since he has gotten here. And I just think our fans love that and we’re seeing the benefit of it now. I was just looking at our NET [ranking] this morning and all six of our non-conference games were Quad 1 right now, which is incredible for us.” Full Q&A. (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founders Jim Cavale and Brandon Copeland sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer for an exclusive conversation in Atlanta during the College Football Playoff championship weekend. The trio discuss the value of collective bargaining and the power of a players association, pointing out the synergies that exist between the NFL and NFLPA and the NBA and NBAPA. Copeland: “The game is a multibillion-dollar game. … [The game] has evolved. The NCAA earns more money than the NBA and MLB. The incentives for everyone around are no longer aligned with ‘Let me see this college athlete go here, graduate; if a college athlete gets hurt, let me see him protect his livelihood, protect his health and safety.’ It’s really hard to do that if I get a million dollars if we win this game. In this day and age, it makes no sense for the college athlete not to have an organization that represents themselves. All that the administrators have shown to this point is that they are going to give you what they’re forced to give you.” Cavale adds that what the House settlement defines as revenue-sharing via NIL is actually pay-for-play, and “if you're an administrator, you look in the mirror, you guys are all very integral, truthful folks, I know many of you, you know it's pay-for-play. So once you admit it's pay-for-play, you’ve got to realize the standard that you're now setting when you make it an NIL deal that tells the athlete they can't do extra NIL deals with these companies, they have to do these 10 deliverables as part of the contract, the athlete’s going to be surprised because they think it is pay-for-play. … So how do you create a standard contract that's fair for the athlete? All these things are things we can help with.” Full conversation on ADU. (link)

+ Ohio State Football OC Chip Kelly is taking the same post with the Las Vegas Raiders for triple his salary in Columbus, according to multiple sources, who report Kelly will earn an average of $6M per year with the Raiders. Length of the contract has yet to be reported. (link)
+ Alabama will name former Tide OC Ryan Grubb to the same post. Grubb followed Crimson Tide HC Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Tuscaloosa before taking the OC role with the Seattle Seahawks last year. (link)
+ Arkansas Baseball HC Dave Van Horn discusses how roster construction has changed in recent years and explains the “problem is the (MLB) draft is in July instead of June. School starts in August, kids that are in the portal, some of them, are draft eligible because they're going to be a senior or they’re a fifth-year senior that had a redshirt year because of an injury or something and they're not sure if they're going to get drafted or if they're going to sign that beautiful free agent contract that can get us. You just don't know who's going to be here, but we try to piece it together as best we can. We try to make sure that we’ve got some younger guys that have a lot of talent. Maybe they don't play a lot as freshmen, but we know they're going to make a jump and be that guy as a sophomore and our job is to make sure they're that guy and then recruit around them instead of over them. [Then we] put our money and scholarships and whatever we've got into a few guys here and there and some pitching. And we've done a pretty good job of it and I think this year might be one of the better jobs we've done of it.” (link)

Hero Sports’ Sam Herder has compiled a running list of the payouts FCS teams received for playing FBS teams in 2024. So far, the biggest payout recorded was the $1M Grambling State received for its trip to Ohio State, followed by Southeastern Louisiana at LSU ($750K), Youngstown State at Michigan State ($725K), Montana State at Oregon ($680K), Idaho at Washington State ($625K) and Weber State at Arizona ($625K). Full list, which will be updated as more info comes in. (link)

Ohio State has partnered with crowdsourcing platform Five Star Fans to facilitate a way for fans to directly pay athletes. Specifically, NIL Daily’s Maddy Hudak explains that fans can purchase internal currency and reward athletes in real time for specific plays. The platform was founded by former Buckeyes cheerleaders Tina Provost and Jennifer Dean, and Provost tells Hudak: "As former Ohio State cheerleaders, my co-founder Jennifer Dean and I understand the DI college athlete and fan experience on a personal level. Five Star Fans is on a mission to benefit all athletes, including non-revenue athletes who need more financial support, especially in the current and future NIL climate.” THE Foundation Co-Founder/former OSU QB Cardale Jones adds: “Partnering with Five Star Fans through THE Foundation is not just about compensating athletes for their NIL, but also bringing the fan into the process of roster retention and recruitment..” (link)

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the fastest growing high school sport for girls is flag football, which experienced a 173% increase in participants in just three years. The fastest declining sport is basketball, which lost 6,000 participants in just one year. (link)

Reports of concussions in the NFL decreased by 17% when compared to the 2023 season, according to league data, which indicates there were 182 total concussions combined in the preseason and regular season (games and practices) in 2024, compared to 219 in 2023. Notably, only 44 concussions in preseason games and practices, and The Athletic’s RJ Kraft notes the only year lower was in 2020 when 30 concussions occurred during practices and there were no preseason games that year due to COVID. NFL EVP for Communications, Public Affairs & Policy, Health & Safety Initiatives Jeff Miller: “This year had a notable decrease over last year as the result of improved equipment, continued rules changes and enforcement, [and] culture change around head injuries. … That is not to say that there is not a lot more work for us to do. We believe that the game, while safer, is no less exciting than it has ever been.” Kraft adds that the “new dynamic kickoff rule led to a lower concussion rate (down 43% vs. the 2021-2023 average) with more kicks being returned – a 57% increase that saw 332 kicks returned. Seven kickoffs were returned for touchdowns, the most since 2021. Despite more kicks being brought back, the league saw the same number of concussions on kickoffs (eight) from year to year. The dynamic kickoff also led to the fewest lower extremity strains on kickoffs since at least 2018 due to slower average player speeds.” (link)

Fox has sold at least 10 Super Bowl commercials for a record $8M apiece, according to Variety’s Brian Steinberg, who points out the hefty price tag “shows how much more important the event has become to Madison Avenue in the streaming era.” Fox Sports EVP of Sales Mark Evans calls the Super Bowl the “only place where you can aggregate legitimate scale with one commercial.” Steinberg adds that Fox started out seeking around $7M for 30 seconds of Super Bowl ad time and “had disposed of the bulk of its Super Bowl LIX inventory in August. … The recent California wildfires prompted a group of sponsors — including State Farm Insurance — to ask to be released from their deals…and Fox was able to re-sell their time for higher prices thanks to intense interest. Some of that activity may have spurred a portion of the hefty $8M+ pacts.” Meanwhile, 30 seconds of ad time in Fox’s late pre-game coverage have gone for as much as $4.5M, up from $2M in the past. A 30-second ad in Fox’s post-game coverage might go for around $4M, compared to $2.5M to $3M in the past.. (link)

“This is not a one and done. This has to be the new normal for us. … We’re going to keep our foot on the gas and hopefully be here a lot more often. I believe we have the perfect coach for Notre Dame. What [Football Head Coach] Marcus [Freeman] does on the field and off the field, he’s accepting everything that Notre Dame is. You don’t want to play Notre Dame football to do just OK or be respected. We want to win national championships. So I really do think we’re all in, provided it’s still a student-athlete experience.” That’s Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua on the success of the Fighting Irish football team this year. Bevacqua, who will sometimes start staff meetings with the Rev. Ted Hesburgh quote, “There is no academic virtue in playing mediocre football,” adds: “I don’t think anybody shies away from the fact that Notre Dame football is really important to Notre Dame. And that a rising tide lifts all ships. If you’re walking around South Bend or Beijing and you have that ND on, people know what it is. That has a lot to do with the reputation of the school, but it also has a lot to do with the history of this football program. … There is chaos. If you look at the history of chaos, strong entities get stronger during chaotic times. I think Notre Dame is a very strong entity. I don’t think our university has ever been stronger in terms of our reputation. I think we’re financially secure. We know who we are.” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene during a radio interview yesterday morning: “Right now, the best way that we can acquire talent — and the national landscape acquires talent — is through money. It used to be about scholarships and facilities and some of the shiny stuff. It went from glitz and glam to green. We are paying student-athletes. That’s the name of the game. [...] We have to treat our operation more as a business, which means we are going to make more transactional decisions. That is in large part antithetical to why I got into this business, but it’s the realities of where we are. If we’re going to be in the game, let’s play the game. [...] Our differentiator is our ability as a department to squeeze all the juice out of the orange that we can, from being responsible with our expenses. And also having the university help us with those expenses. In order for us to be successful at the highest level, we have to rev share at the highest level. Depending on the set of circumstances, we may have to provide more resources, more cash, more money to student-athletes to acquire their talents.” (link)

Per Indiana AD Scott Dolson: “We’re committed. You have to be.” That despite recent budget blips for the Hoosiers, which included internal layoffs & a loan from central campus. Dolson points to the personal seat licensing initiative for IU football that should generate upwards of $3M in revenue annually. The per-seat fee will range from $0 in the upper corners of Memorial Stadium to $250 for lower levels between the 30-yard lines. Dolson: “All these decisions are tough. We really have to spend hours and hours wringing our hands over to decide what the right move is. We love the strong family atmosphere at Memorial Stadium and we want our long-time fans to still enjoy games. We don’t want to price anybody out.” Dolson also says overall prices will still be in the bottom third of the Big Ten & there are no immediate plans to move to a seat license structure for men’s hoops inside Assembly Hall. (link)

Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg is ready to put last year’s subpar football season behind him: “I do feel like everybody is starting to turn the page. The conference will release the schedule, and (fans) will start to think about the games and where they want to travel next fall.” The Pokes will increase football season ticket prices for 2025, though Weiberg says the exact bumps have yet to be determined. More: “We’ve got to rally. I really believe they will be there. They’ve been outstanding the last couple of years, with the sellouts of all of the games.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake writes that from a media value perspective, it may not matter which school(s) are added to the Pac-12. Canzano gets this from a source after last week’s Pac-12 meetings: “The feedback we’re getting from prospective media partners is that there isn’t one expansion addition that clearly stands out above the others.” Canzano goes on to review the possibilities of UNLV (lawsuit complications), Nevada (only if paired with UNLV), Memphis and/or Tulane (travel issues, plus, “I’ve been repeatedly told by a variety of well-placed sources that Memphis and Tulane only work for the Pac-12 at the right number.”). Also: “Sacramento State is not an option. Get it out of your mind.” (link)

With ESPN picking up its option on the ACC’s media rights, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down what it means for Cal and Stanford and observes: “This is not 2005, when Cal had Marshawn Lynch, or 2015, when Christian McCaffrey played for Stanford. Football has lost relevance on both campuses at precisely the time it has become more critical than ever within the college sports ecosystem. … In our view, the next rupture point is 2028-29, when the Big Ten likely will assess its membership situation in advance of media rights negotiations for the contract cycle that begins in the summer of 2030.” Meanwhile, regarding the partial revenue shares Cal and Stanford are receiving: “Our rough estimates, which are based on ACC media revenue projections, suggest each school will take home $195M less in distributions than the legacy ACC schools over the nine-year period. And that’s before the ‘brand’ distribution model takes effect. Both athletic departments will receive financial assistance from central campus, and they must double down on fundraising efforts, as well. … It’s a tangled web, for sure. The steps required to pacify Clemson and Florida State and maintain peace in the ACC will make it more difficult for the Bears and Cardinal to compete. But at least their new home should remain intact for the rest of the decade.” (link)

MIAA (DII) Commissioner Mike Racy joins D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi to discuss the current NCAA governance setup and explains he’s been working with an advisory board led by SP Athletics Partner/former Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone. “And that group is still getting started and still trying to figure out you know what it looks like but its real purpose is to bring representatives from FCS, Division II, Division III and even the NAIA around the table to talk about the future of college sports. … Jon is well-connected throughout all of college sport, especially Division I, and he's had conversations with Amy Perko and the Knight Commission and other thought leaders about what this group is.” Racy adds: “I think everyone recognizes that the NCAA is kind of a little paralyzed right now with the litigation and waiting for the House settlement and it’s hard to get too far out in front on some of these issues, but someone needs to. Someone needs to be having conversations about ‘This is what college sports could look like. Division I schools, if you don't want to opt in, here are some options of what you could do with football or maybe some other sports and continue to be a part of Division I basketball. No one's thinking about that. We need people to.” With the future yet to be written, Racy submits college sports leadership “may not be an NCAA blue disc and an NAIA logo separately managing national governance intercollegiate athletic issues. There may be one body…that has authority over all four-year colleges and universities that offer intercollegiate athletics.” Under the current format, Racy believes it’s unlikely DI schools will move down to DII, but “if we can get people in a room and they can think about maybe a different organization of the NCAA, then yes. An archaic rule is you can have two of your sports at the DI level except for football and basketball. Well, maybe we need to rethink that in football. Maybe there's a different championship of football that the NCAA helps create and DI and DII members that want to be a part of that can do that without it affecting their other divisional affiliations.” (link)

Texas Tech Men’s Basketball student-athlete JT Toppin was ejected from the Red Raiders’ game against Houston yesterday and not long thereafter, so was HC Grant McCasland. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt did not agree with the call. “I am appalled and disappointed by the official's egregious decision to eject JT Toppin from tonight's game against Houston. This decision, made on a play that was clearly accidental and without intent, is unacceptable. Immediately after the ejection, I spoke with [Big 12] Commissioner [Brett] Yormark, who assured me that the situation would be addressed and there would be accountability. On behalf of Red Raider Nation, we are extremely proud of our team and the leadership of Coach McCasland.” (link)

Arizona State Men’s Basketball HC Bobby Hurley waved his players off the floor after the game at Arizona yesterday to prevent any further escalation of emotions between the two squads. Hurley, who said the Wildcats chirped the whole game, clarified afterwards: “Right near our bench, it was relentless, constant chatter from a couple of Arizona's players that wasn't being policed properly. Of course, they're going to be happy with winning, but it was done with no class, in my opinion.” Arizona HC Tommy Lloyd: “Obviously, it's disappointing, probably on all sides. When tough things happen, we want to be a program that responds with class, and I don't know if we did or didn't. But it was a tough moment in an emotional game. I've got a lot of respect for Bobby and Arizona State's players.” (link)
|
Nebraska will likely not hold a football spring game because of HC Matt Rhule’s concern about other teams poaching his players. Rhule: “The word 'tampering' doesn't exist anymore. It's just an absolute free open common market. I don't necessarily want to open up to the outside world and have people watch our guys and say, 'He looks like a pretty good player. Let's go get him.'" Following last year’s spring game, Rhule notes “I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that. So you go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.” (link, link)

NIL lawsuits against Florida Football HC Billy Napier and Florida State Men’s Basketball HC Leonard Hamilton put front-and-center Florida’s sovereign immunity law, which shields the state and its agencies from civil liability in most cases. Sportico’s Daniel Libit observes that “attempting to circumvent this defense, the athletes suing Hamilton argue that if the coach is considered an employee of any relevant entity, it should be Seminole Boosters Inc.—the FSU athletic fundraising organization that operates as its own distinct 501(c)(3) charitable organization—since a portion of its annual disbursements go to help supplement his and other FSU coaches’ compensation.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who represents the FSU players: “We took a proactive approach. If there is a challenge [as to whether Hamilton] is an employee of the university or of a separate organization, the mechanism by which he is paid is relevant.” Attorney Eugene Egdorf, who has represented several student-athletes in lawsuits against universities, adds: “If the schools are indeed funding NIL, sovereign immunity will be a huge issue that the athletes must consider. In a state like Texas, your NIL deal may be entirely unenforceable. Even in the instance of collectives, lawyers will argue they are facilitated with the schools and have protections. If I was advising an athlete, I would certainly tell them to factor these concerns in the decision where to play.” Beyond players, Marty Greenberg, a seasoned sports lawyer who has represented dozens of college coaches, tells Libit he would strongly advise his clients at Texas public universities to negotiate an immunity waiver in their contracts. “Who the hell would want to coach in Texas if they knew they’d never get their day in court?” More from Libit.
