Akron President RJ Nemer joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the Zips’ AD search and explains what he values most in an athletics leader: "The AD is a central figure, is a key person, is the face of that program, so I think it's a really great opportunity to both carry on [the Akron] tradition but to also modernize it, make it his or her own, to take us into whatever that next five to 10 years looks like for collegiate sports." Nemer also shares insight into his experience working in professional sports for 20 years before joining Akron's leadership team and how his unique perspective will influence how he evaluates and collaborates with the next AD. Nemer says he’ll be involved with the athletics department to the extent that the next AD needs him to be. “I’m a really big believer in empowering and letting go. A lot of times some of my leaders here will have meetings and say would you like to attend them. My response is always if I could have value or help you, I'll attend, but I don't need to be there. If you tell me you’ve got it, then I trust that you’ve got it, and that's how I lead. So it would be no different with this.” As far as what background and experience he’s looking for in the next AD, Nemer emphasizes he’s keeping an open mind. “I don’t want to limit who we’re looking for, what we’re looking for. … We’re really looking for that person more than that job description.” Don’t miss the full Q&A on Connect. SBJ’s Abe Madkour checks in with multiple ADs to get a feel for how they’re handling sweeping changes throughout the industry, and one “longtime leader” said the following when asked whether he still enjoyed his job: “Not nearly as much as I did or hope to.” Madkour notes that when it comes to the House settlement “there is little consensus on what determines fair market value, how this review could slow down the dealmaking process, and most importantly, enforcement. Fair market value in Chapel Hill is different than in Austin or Columbus, and leaders can live with that because that’s always been the case. The intent is noble, but there are a lot of details still to be resolved. The new rules must make it possible for everyone to compete and not have such large gaps between institutions. They have to get donors and collectives out of this system, but can they? Everyone wants fair commercial activity, but the system will break if it’s still donors buying players.” The ADs tell Madkour that they “want the lawsuits to stop, but all expect more to come. Title IX compliance is still unclear, and they remain unconvinced there will be strong enough punitive enforcement to end the multitude of transgressions. Add it all up, and you can see how the joy has been sapped out of being an athletic director.” (link)

Nine more objections to the House settlement came in over the weekend, according to Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes one came from former UCLA softball student-athlete Rachel Garcia, an Olympian and two-time USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Garcia contends the settlement does not fully compensate athletes who were denied lucrative NIL opportunities while contributing to the rise of the sport. Another notable women's sports figure to object is former Duke/Boston College women's lacrosse player/current ESPN broadcaster Charlotte North, who objects to the settlement not considering (and releasing) Title IX given the historically disparate resources given to women's sports. Other objections concern roster limits and payout calculations. Full rundown from Ehrlich. (link)
|
James Madison Cross Country HC Rebekah Ricksecker is among those objecting to the House settlement. According to the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen, Ricksecker, who is one of four DI coaches who signed a declaration as part of Title IX attorney Arthur Bryant’s objection, writes: “Approximately half of the student athletes on these rosters are walk-on athletes who do not receive an athletic scholarship. In my experience, collegiate runners often perform their best in their junior and senior years. The training and development that we provide during the freshman and sophomore years are crucial to achieving peak performance. Some of the walk-on athletes I have coached who are given time to develop often match and can indeed out-perform our scholarship athletes. … If the roster limits in the proposed settlement are approved, I will be forced to cut approximately half of our walk-on athletes from the team. These student-athletes would have their collegiate running careers cut short, or be forced to disrupt their lives to transfer for no good reason. It would be completely unfair for the student athletes.” (link)

U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) is asking the Government Accountability Office to examine how DI and DII schools’ spending on athletics programs and facilities impacts the cost of tuition and fees. Walberg adds in the request that “new policies may put further pressure on schools to spend money on high-quality athletic programs to recruit and retain the best athletes.” (link); Citing an NCAA report, Walberg, who chairs the House Education and Workforce Committee, noted that in 2022, the median revenue of DI athletic departments through donor contributions, ticket sales and media rights was $8.4M, while the median total department expenditures was $30.3M. The proportionate gap between those revenue streams and overall expenses was even more pronounced at the DII level. While Walberg’s Michigan district includes just one DI school (Western Michigan), Sportico’s Daniel Libit points out that “after Walberg became chair, the first piece of legislation passed out of the House Education committee was also college sports-related: a bill preventing federal funds from being spent on any organization – such as the NCAA – that allows transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.” (link)
|
UTSA AD Lisa Campos outlines how the Roadrunners are preparing for the implementation of the House settlement and notes that “we are closely coordinating with the American Athletic Conference and our colleagues across the conference on establishing revenue-sharing thresholds. All of the conference members will observe and coordinate their plans around these developments. As a state agency, UTSA uses annual budget-setting processes and protocols that are approved by the UT System and are part of discussions held with the State and legislature during legislative sessions. … As we build the Athletics budget, all sources available for revenue sharing are being evaluated.” To assist with NIL, Campos explains the Roadrunners will hire an NIL GM “dedicated to managing NIL engagement with our student-athletes in all sports.” (link)

UTEP announces the Gold Standard Giving Society, which will include donors who make commitments of at least $30K over a three-year period above and beyond priority seating contributions. Since the fall of 2024, 28 inaugural members of Gold Standard have contributed over $10M in support of UTEP Athletics philanthropic priorities. Miners AD Jim Senter: "The Gold Standard Giving Society is designed for donors who are committed to making a lasting impact on our student-athletes and sports programs. Through strategic, long-term giving, these donors play a critical role in ensuring that UTEP Athletics is equipped to meet the evolving demands of intercollegiate athletics." (link)

The addition of a women’s hockey team would add $4.5M to Michigan’s budget, according to a study conducted by Collegiate Sports Associates which indicates the program would bring in roughly $400K in revenue each year. Furthermore, the report finds that U-M would need to spend around $50M to renovate and expand Yost Ice Arena or $300M to $330M to build a new facility altogether. The new rink would be home to both the men and women’s hockey teams with a capacity between 8,000-10,000. The ice also would be available for campus and community use. Ultimately, CSA concludes there are three pathways for the Wolverines to to create a women’s hockey program: placing responsibility on the athletic department to fund the program, which would come with “significant financial challenges prompting arduous resource allocation decisions and/or likely projected athletics deficits at a volatile time in the NCAA,” an institutional subsidy to athletics, or major philanthropic gift(s) to fund all short-term and long-term resources and an endowment. From the report: “The uncertain future frames a problematic context questioning the financial wisdom of expanding sport sponsorship at this moment. Subsequently, Michigan’s athletics values are competing with each other, which will challenge the long-held culture of investment in student-athlete success, broad-based program offerings, and championship performance versus an athletics program that serves fewer student-athletes and with fewer services, is less self-sustaining, and values participation over championships.” (link)

Florida State Men’s Basketball HC Leonard Hamilton will step down at the end of the season and says: "I'm very fortunate to be able to have given this job my all with no regrets. Every head coach inherits a legacy and is obligated to leave the job better than they inherited it. I'm very proud of what we have been able to accomplish here over the last 23 seasons. We were a consistent contender, and we created success for our players during their time here. So many of them have gone on to be successful in life. I hope that it will be remembered as my legacy. I look forward to working with our administration during this transition and being as helpful as possible through this process." (link)

A gambling ring currently under federal investigation for its role in two NBA betting cases was also involved in unusual wagering activity on at least three men's college basketball programs this season, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, who reports: “Sportsbook accounts connected to the gambling ring bet against North Carolina A&T, Mississippi Valley State and Eastern Michigan in games this season. Some of the same accounts also placed large wagers on prop bets involving former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter in two games during the 2023-24 NBA season and veteran guard Terry Rozier in 2023, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets. … The sportsbook accounts linked to the gambling ring also wagered on a Temple game flagged for suspicious betting last March. Sources familiar with the ongoing investigations said the ring targeted additional college basketball programs over the past two seasons. Officials at North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State did not respond to requests for comment regarding the betting case. North Carolina A&T athletic director Earl Hilton did tell ESPN in an email that the recent suspension of three basketball players was for a violation ‘of well-established team rules’ but declined further comment, citing privacy laws.” (link)

The IRS has issued two more denial letters to collectives seeking 501(c)(3) status. James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis: “Even though the collective specified it would pay FMV for services to local nonprofits, the denial includes a redacted percentage indicating the activity provides substantial private benefit.” More specifically, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes the letters state: “By providing compensation to student athletes for the use of their NIL, you confer an impermissible amount of private benefit to the student athletes, therefore, you are operating for a substantial non-exempt purpose.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair was asked by the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs whether the Rockets would consider private equity offers in the future and responded: “I think we’re all looking at every single option to create more revenue, and to navigate the times we’re in. I don’t know if private equity is the answer just yet, but I think you've got to vet every option and it's time to really think outside the box – to think in terms of what some of these ideas could be and what they could mean for Toledo. This place is amazing and we've done some really neat things, but we have not reached our true potential. So we're constantly looking at options and ways to actualize that potential and serve the greater university's initiative. Now is the time to get all the ideas on the table.” (link)

Penn State has announced the creation of ROAR Solutions, a group of resources aimed at delivering “the best student-athlete endorsement and support in the country.” ROAR Solutions will consist of five core initiatives: Nittany Lion Club Sport Excellence Funds, The Brand Academy, DisruptU, Happy Valley United and Playfly Max. Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft: "This is not the time to rest on our achievements. We must act boldly, providing our athletes with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in this evolving landscape." (link, link)

Little Rock AD Frank Cuervo joins Talk Business & Politics to discuss the changes in college sports and remarks: “I’m not sure there’s been this much disruption and change since the advent of Title IX nearly 50 years ago. And there were a lot of good things that came from that. Women’s sports have exploded and it was really a seminal time for college sports and athletics in general. So I’m hopeful that once some of the tides settle that we’ll be in a similar position and that this era will produce the type of positive results that the Title IX era did.” Still, Cuervo admits the “ground under our feet is not particularly stable right now. … I think once [the House settlement is] brought to some fruition and there’s some finality there, then we can really start to plan and decide what our new normal is.” If/when House is settled, Cuervo would like to bring NIL operations in-house and explains: “As an institution, as a university, and an athletics program, we will be able to work directly with a student athlete to, in effect, extend their scholarship. Not only to include, you know, room, board, tuition and fees, but also to include name, image, and likeness rights. So that’s a significant change. I think actually bringing it in-house and allowing the institutions to administer it is a step toward providing some guardrails…[it] will allow us to have a degree of control. We’ll be able to work with our student athletes to administer that, bring some uniformity to it across all sectors of college athletics to make sure that it’s actually happening for the right reasons.” (link)

More from Marquette AD Mike Broeker’s sitdown with Paint Touches, during which he said the following about MTEs with NIL attached, ala the Player’s Era Festival: “We have a commitment already for next year for an MTE, we just haven’t announced it yet. So I’m not going to break that news here. I think we have to be open-minded about everything and scheduling. If I’ve learned anything from working with Shaka over the last four years, he’s increased my, I would say, open mindedness when it comes to evaluating things. If that opportunity came along, we’d have to evaluate it. And the other thing you have to remember too is, and we just talked about this a little while ago, Fiserv’s an incredibly important place for us. We’re doing things we’ve never done before and that has a great impact on our business. It’s always in our best interest from a business standpoint to play as many home games as we can. So when you start to think about the kind of the model we’ve been in the last couple years, having that 17 home game marker on any given year is a good thing for us financially, right? And then on the years when we want to host that game at the Al [McGuire Center], do we have an opportunity to augment that and still stay at 17? How do we schedule so it’s that and then play these quality home and homes that Shaka’s played since he has gotten here. And I just think our fans love that and we’re seeing the benefit of it now. I was just looking at our NET [ranking] this morning and all six of our non-conference games were Quad 1 right now, which is incredible for us.” Full Q&A. (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founders Jim Cavale and Brandon Copeland sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer for an exclusive conversation in Atlanta during the College Football Playoff championship weekend. The trio discuss the value of collective bargaining and the power of a players association, pointing out the synergies that exist between the NFL and NFLPA and the NBA and NBAPA. Copeland: “The game is a multibillion-dollar game. … [The game] has evolved. The NCAA earns more money than the NBA and MLB. The incentives for everyone around are no longer aligned with ‘Let me see this college athlete go here, graduate; if a college athlete gets hurt, let me see him protect his livelihood, protect his health and safety.’ It’s really hard to do that if I get a million dollars if we win this game. In this day and age, it makes no sense for the college athlete not to have an organization that represents themselves. All that the administrators have shown to this point is that they are going to give you what they’re forced to give you.” Cavale adds that what the House settlement defines as revenue-sharing via NIL is actually pay-for-play, and “if you're an administrator, you look in the mirror, you guys are all very integral, truthful folks, I know many of you, you know it's pay-for-play. So once you admit it's pay-for-play, you’ve got to realize the standard that you're now setting when you make it an NIL deal that tells the athlete they can't do extra NIL deals with these companies, they have to do these 10 deliverables as part of the contract, the athlete’s going to be surprised because they think it is pay-for-play. … So how do you create a standard contract that's fair for the athlete? All these things are things we can help with.” Full conversation on ADU. (link)

+ Arkansas Baseball HC Dave Van Horn discusses how roster construction has changed in recent years and explains the “problem is the (MLB) draft is in July instead of June. School starts in August, kids that are in the portal, some of them, are draft eligible because they're going to be a senior or they’re a fifth-year senior that had a redshirt year because of an injury or something and they're not sure if they're going to get drafted or if they're going to sign that beautiful free agent contract that can get us. You just don't know who's going to be here, but we try to piece it together as best we can. We try to make sure that we’ve got some younger guys that have a lot of talent. Maybe they don't play a lot as freshmen, but we know they're going to make a jump and be that guy as a sophomore and our job is to make sure they're that guy and then recruit around them instead of over them. [Then we] put our money and scholarships and whatever we've got into a few guys here and there and some pitching. And we've done a pretty good job of it and I think this year might be one of the better jobs we've done of it.” (link)

Ohio State has partnered with crowdsourcing platform Five Star Fans to facilitate a way for fans to directly pay athletes. Specifically, NIL Daily’s Maddy Hudak explains that fans can purchase internal currency and reward athletes in real time for specific plays. The platform was founded by former Buckeyes cheerleaders Tina Provost and Jennifer Dean, and Provost tells Hudak: "As former Ohio State cheerleaders, my co-founder Jennifer Dean and I understand the DI college athlete and fan experience on a personal level. Five Star Fans is on a mission to benefit all athletes, including non-revenue athletes who need more financial support, especially in the current and future NIL climate.” THE Foundation Co-Founder/former OSU QB Cardale Jones adds: “Partnering with Five Star Fans through THE Foundation is not just about compensating athletes for their NIL, but also bringing the fan into the process of roster retention and recruitment.” (link)

Reports of concussions in the NFL decreased by 17% when compared to the 2023 season, according to league data, which indicates there were 182 total concussions combined in the preseason and regular season (games and practices) in 2024, compared to 219 in 2023. Notably, only 44 concussions in preseason games and practices, and The Athletic’s RJ Kraft notes the only year lower was in 2020 when 30 concussions occurred during practices and there were no preseason games that year due to COVID. NFL EVP for Communications, Public Affairs & Policy, Health & Safety Initiatives Jeff Miller: “This year had a notable decrease over last year as the result of improved equipment, continued rules changes and enforcement, [and] culture change around head injuries. … That is not to say that there is not a lot more work for us to do. We believe that the game, while safer, is no less exciting than it has ever been.” Kraft adds that the “new dynamic kickoff rule led to a lower concussion rate (down 43% vs. the 2021-2023 average) with more kicks being returned – a 57% increase that saw 332 kicks returned. Seven kickoffs were returned for touchdowns, the most since 2021. Despite more kicks being brought back, the league saw the same number of concussions on kickoffs (eight) from year to year. The dynamic kickoff also led to the fewest lower extremity strains on kickoffs since at least 2018 due to slower average player speeds.” (link)

Fox has sold at least 10 Super Bowl commercials for a record $8M apiece, according to Variety’s Brian Steinberg, who points out the hefty price tag “shows how much more important the event has become to Madison Avenue in the streaming era.” Fox Sports EVP of Sales Mark Evans calls the Super Bowl the “only place where you can aggregate legitimate scale with one commercial.” Steinberg adds that Fox started out seeking around $7M for 30 seconds of Super Bowl ad time and “had disposed of the bulk of its Super Bowl LIX inventory in August. … The recent California wildfires prompted a group of sponsors — including State Farm Insurance — to ask to be released from their deals…and Fox was able to re-sell their time for higher prices thanks to intense interest. Some of that activity may have spurred a portion of the hefty $8M+ pacts.” Meanwhile, 30 seconds of ad time in Fox’s late pre-game coverage have gone for as much as $4.5M, up from $2M in the past. A 30-second ad in Fox’s post-game coverage might go for around $4M, compared to $2.5M to $3M in the past. (link)
