The NCAA will settle an antitrust lawsuit filed by four states and the District of Columbia, per Sportico's Michael McCann, who adds: "The settlement is expected to remove a potential complication for the NCAA as it seeks to convince U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken to grant final approval of the settlement resolving the House, Carter and Hubbard antitrust litigations. In Tennessee et. al v. NCAA, a group of attorneys general maintain that NCAA member schools and conferences have illegally conspired through NCAA rules to restrain how recruits can discuss opportunities with NIL collectives. At issue is the so-called 'NIL recruiting ban' wherein the NCAA prohibits the use of NIL contracts as a recruiting inducement." As of now, the parties have signed a term sheet, with the settlement to be finalized by March 17. More. (link)

NCAA Senior Vice President of Championships Lynda Tealer joins Connect’s Stephanie Garcia Cichosz to talk about her new role overseeing 84 championships, areas for improvement, continuing to focus on the student-athlete experience but broadening the scope to include coaches and their families, the future of championship selection and more. On broadening the scope for coaches and their families, Tealer explains they may only have one shot at a championship. “This might be a one-shot deal. Or it might be this year we had the first woman to lead a championship team in volleyball, so let's make sure that those coaches have an excellent experience as well as their student-athletes. … Knowing that this coaching is a lifestyle, and it's not just the coach that's involved in that, it's also their families. So, let's make sure we include families and celebrate them and allow them to really have that time with the coach and their family.” The NCAA will also focus on collecting feedback for finding the right cadence for championship selection, as Tealer notes some prefer the two-year process, because the data is more fresh, while others prefer four years for the lead time. “Perhaps the answer is it’s not the same for every sport. That would be different, but it’s certainly worth talking about.” (link)

U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) is asking the Government Accountability Office to examine how DI and DII schools’ spending on athletics programs and facilities impacts the cost of tuition and fees. Walberg adds in the request that “new policies may put further pressure on schools to spend money on high-quality athletic programs to recruit and retain the best athletes.” (link); Citing an NCAA report, Walberg, who chairs the House Education and Workforce Committee, noted that in 2022, the median revenue of DI athletic departments through donor contributions, ticket sales and media rights was $8.4M, while the median total department expenditures was $30.3M. The proportionate gap between those revenue streams and overall expenses was even more pronounced at the DII level. While Walberg’s Michigan district includes just one DI school (Western Michigan), Sportico’s Daniel Libit points out that “after Walberg became chair, the first piece of legislation passed out of the House Education committee was also college sports-related: a bill preventing federal funds from being spent on any organization – such as the NCAA – that allows transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.” (link)

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue gets perspectives from administrators and coaches in the Lone Star state about legislative changes passed at the NCAA Convention. On the changes around progress toward degree requirements that eliminate the 18-semester or 27-quarter hour credits per academic year, one administrator tells Hogue: “This is another step toward ending the concept of being a student-athlete.” One LSC HC: “A lot of coaches already don’t give a s*** about players getting a degree anymore as long as they’re eligible to play in the fall. This (change) only hurts the athlete.” On the elimination of the transferable English, math and science credits for two-year college transfers, an LSC administrator commented: “I don’t know why we’re trying to be Division I. We should focus on ensuring our athletes receive their education, considering the small percentage of players who reach the professional level from DII.” (link)

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the fastest growing high school sport for girls is flag football, which experienced a 173% increase in participants in just three years. The fastest declining sport is basketball, which lost 6,000 participants in just one year. (link)

Reports of concussions in the NFL decreased by 17% when compared to the 2023 season, according to league data, which indicates there were 182 total concussions combined in the preseason and regular season (games and practices) in 2024, compared to 219 in 2023. Notably, only 44 concussions in preseason games and practices, and The Athletic’s RJ Kraft notes the only year lower was in 2020 when 30 concussions occurred during practices and there were no preseason games that year due to COVID. NFL EVP for Communications, Public Affairs & Policy, Health & Safety Initiatives Jeff Miller: “This year had a notable decrease over last year as the result of improved equipment, continued rules changes and enforcement, [and] culture change around head injuries. … That is not to say that there is not a lot more work for us to do. We believe that the game, while safer, is no less exciting than it has ever been.” Kraft adds that the “new dynamic kickoff rule led to a lower concussion rate (down 43% vs. the 2021-2023 average) with more kicks being returned – a 57% increase that saw 332 kicks returned. Seven kickoffs were returned for touchdowns, the most since 2021. Despite more kicks being brought back, the league saw the same number of concussions on kickoffs (eight) from year to year. The dynamic kickoff also led to the fewest lower extremity strains on kickoffs since at least 2018 due to slower average player speeds.” (link)
