New on Connect: Outgoing ASUN Commissioner Gumbart Q&As with D1.ticker’s Eargle about the latest hiring trends for conference commissioners, the status of the UAC, lessons for future industry leaders and lots more. Gumbart says the UAC’s roadblocks are “very much what you’d expect if you’ve ever been part of a small business. A lot of what we do is just small business activity, and you have to be cognizant of the decision-makers, and in our football league, the presidents are the decision-makers.” Gumbart also explains the ASUN will be recognized as the AQ for the FCS Playoffs given the delay in recognizing the UAC as a football-only conference, but “we’ll be doing business as the United Athletic Conference and probably within a year we’ll be recognized as a football-only conference.” Full interview. The latest from San Diego State AD Wicker on if the Aztecs will end up in the Big 12 or Pac-12: “One or the other is going to happen. We’re excited for the opportunity, and we’ve done a lot of work to prepare for that.” (link)

Asked why New Mexico hasn’t been at least publicly mentioned as a possible Pac-12 expansion candidate, The Mercury News’ Wilner observes the Lobos work geographically, are an R1 research institution, and the “basketball program operates at a sufficiently competitive level, although the past eight or nine years have been rough. Also, the Albuquerque media market is the 48th-largest in the country, substantially bigger than Tucson and Spokane, for instance. In all candor, the Hotline has wondered about the Lobos as an expansion candidate precisely because nobody is talking about them as an expansion candidate. After all, the fundamental tenets of our reporting strategy are 1) follow the money, and 2) listen to the silence.” However, Wilner also notes the R1 status is notable, but UNM isn’t a member of the Association of American Universities, and it ranks 212th in the U.S. News and World Report list of national universities. Also, the football program is third-rate. “Nothing surprises us in the realignment game, especially when the Pac-12 presidents are involved. But the Lobos as a viable candidate for expansion would come pretty close to a surprise.” (link)

There is a $1M buyout if she were to leave for another job in the first year, a number that decreases by $250K each year. “The buyout structure is the same on the university's end if it cuts ties without cause, and wins and losses can't be used for cause, per the MOU.” (link)

The Athletic’s Jennings questions Miami (OH)’s handling of women’s basketball HC Hendrix’s exit due to inappropriate communication with a WBB student-athlete. Jennings: “College athletes have an increasing amount of power in today’s NCAA, but they will always be hindered by leaders who look for the fast way out of a problem. There are a lot of schools that would have done (and have done) exactly what Miami of Ohio did. But, surely, there are administrators at other schools who would have done the right thing. They would have announced Hendrix was on leave pending an investigation, they would never have agreed to resignation terms that forced them to remain silent if a school came along and handed Hendrix another group of players to lead.” (link)

Sporting News’ DeCourcy gets an explanation from Villanova General Manager of Basketball Dunleavy as to why he left his post as Quinnipiac men’s basketball HC after a 20-12 season this past year to assume the GM role with the Wildcats. Dunleavy: “There’s no doubt in my mind it’ll be a difficult adjustment. Coaching … is a passion and borderline addiction for everybody who’s in this business. So that’s something I accepted when I changed roles, and you just embrace the fact that’s going to be there. But I also think if I was in the gym with my own team at Quinnipiac, there would have been a big part of me looking at it like: Did I just pass up on a life-changing, amazing opportunity? … Just in taking a big step back in terms of my family and myself, certainly the job has changed a lot in the past few years, and the scope of it has become bigger, and the opportunity to do things outside of coaching that didn’t exist maybe even three or four years ago and kind of engage in a part of the business that really is growing from nothing. For me, that opportunity seemed really exciting.” (link)

After a one-time stock grant tied to the company’s IPO yielded Endeavor CEO Emanuel $300M in compensation in 2021, his 2022 package was just above $19M and is “more in line with what he would expect during a typical year.” Executive Chairman Whitesell and President Shapiro earned $12.2M and $18.7M in 2022, respectively, after hauling in $123M and $42M the year prior. New Haven (DII) began construction on a $10M, 30K square-foot athletic performance center in 2021 and thought it could be a critical step in moving to DI and into FCS status, but officials now say they don’t want to rush it. Former Kansas AD/current New Haven Interim President Zenger: “We had discussions with multiple conferences and said no to several that would have liked us to have joined, but the travel costs and other things just didn’t fit our needs right now, both as an athletic department and as a university. That's a pledge I make to our entire campus: if ever that move will be made, it'll be with everyone's best interest at heart.” Chargers Interim AD Mays: “As of right now there's nothing imminent, but I'm really proud of the leadership of this university and the way we’ve handled this in terms of really just taking it one step at a time and making sure every step of the way we are doing our due diligence, that if we are to make a move that it is the right move for the university and we’re not jumping into something that doesn’t only not benefit our student athletes, but everyone, including our students, faculty and families.” (link)

ANACHEL’s Cecil kicked off the Big Ten’s introduction of new Commissioner Petitti, who says his immediate attention will be to onboard USC and UCLA, and notes of future expansion: “As commissioner of the Big Ten, my job is to make sure it is as strong in the present and future as it's always been. I'll leave it at that." Meanwhile, Illinois Chancellor Jones remarked during the presser that “the notion of expansion is not really at the top of our list at the moment. That’s an honest answer. … We're only going to do what's best for our current membership. There has to be some value added for expanding beyond.” Petitti says of NIL that the “system deserves a national solution. State by state doesn’t seem to make sense.” Petitti also remarks that his career experiences have encouraged him "to embrace change, to innovate and to build consensus, and says he will take the same approach with the Big Ten. “You can embrace change without having to really change the actual (collegiate athletic) model.” More updates from ESPN’s Rittenberg (link), The Athletic’s Auerbach (link) and Extra Points’ Brown (link). SEC Commissioner Sankey would like to come to a scheduling decision during next week’s annual spring meeting in Destin, pointing out that “eventually, we have to vote.” So far, Sankey says not every school has made a decision on the format, and Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger notes that while Texas and Oklahoma do not get a vote, their administrators have been “heavily involved” in the discussions. One decision point involves the College Football Playoff expansion to 12 teams while the requirement for bowl eligibility will remain at 6-6, and Sankey says: “We were asked [by athletic directors] on a video conference … help us think about what this means for bowl eligibility based on the two different formats and help us know what this means for CFP access. We’ve gone back to help our ADs think through the decision-making.” (link)

The NCHC is reportedly considering expansion by adding Arizona State. The Grand Forks Herald’s Schlossman observes that if the conference does vote to add Arizona State – which applied for membership in 2016 but was turned down – the league could go to an odd number of teams for the first time. Sun Devils HC Powers in October acknowledged the team was probably not ready in 2016 but is confident it is now. “We've done everything the right way. We got competitive quicker than we thought we would. We qualified for the NCAA tournament. Now, we built a beautiful facility. We think we're ready.” The league also discussed the possibility of moving under the umbrella of the Summit League, but Schlossman reports that “it does not appear there's a large enough consensus to make such a move at this time.” (link)

Former Miami (OH) Women’s Basketball HC Hendrix’s departure comes a week after the university was made aware of intimate texts between her and a player. RedHawks AD Sayler became aware of the texts last week, according to The Athletic’s Jennings and Hamilton, and a subsequent review found that “the matter did not constitute a violation of Title IX or the University’s Sexual Misconduct protocol” but was sufficient to begin the termination process for Hendrix’s alleged violation of the university’s policy on staff members pursuing or engaging in a consensual amorous relationship with any Miami undergraduate students.” Instead, Hendrix resigned contingent upon Miami’s agreeing to not make any disparaging remarks about her and responding to media inquiries only with the dates of her employment. Asked why it would agree to those terms, the university explains: “With our student athletes’ well-being at the forefront of our concerns, and to protect their rights to confidentiality under FERPA, we accepted the Coach’s resignation.” (link)

Add Maryland Football HC Locksley to the list of coaches who would believe a system in which players are paid for their labor would be favorable to the current arrangement. “We signed a billion-dollar TV deal in the Big Ten. Let's take $25M out of that and give it to every school and say, ‘That's your salary cap. That's what you recruit with. You manage it how you see fit,’ which is very similar to what the NFL does with their salary cap." (link); Meanwhile, Locksley has agreed to an amended contract that will increase his salary from $4M to an average of $6.1M over the term of the five-year deal, Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger reports, adding that the new contract starts at $5.5M and increases $300K each year through the 2027 season. The contract also includes an automatic one-year extension if the Terps win at least seven games this season. (link)

Michigan State’s baseball, softball & soccer stadiums recently flooded for the third time in seven years due to an overflow of the Red Cedar River. Spartans AD Haller is ready for a permanent fix: “I mean, I get it. It's a flood plain. You can't really move a floodplain. But I do think over decades of having the same issue, we should be able to look at it and say, 'Well, let's do something.' … It’s on my plate now. It's on our clock. [...] We’ve just got to have a sense of taking care of people better. I can't tell you I'm going to correct it next year. I can tell you that we're going to have a strategic approach to addressing it, whatever that is — if that's putting pumps out there, if it's moving the fields, whatever it is. But I just don't think every year we should have this issue. And we have it every year. And it has to be more than, 'Well, you know, if they're only missing a couple of games.' I think it's a little bit bigger than that.” (link)

The Athletic’s Snyder sheds more light on Penn State’s renovation plans for Beaver Stadium. As reported, the price tag could be as high as $700M when all is said and done, and PSU “is working in phases and prioritizing immediate needs for the stadium, including stadium winterization costs. This is going to be a process and the stadium’s west side is where the majority of the utilities are located. The renovation will address as much of the current facility maintenance needs as possible. The need to widen the stadium’s concourse has long been a talking point and the flow of people in and out of the building should be addressed with the renovation. Field lighting will also be improved to meet NCAA standards.” Snyder also reports the athletic department is expected to ask trustees next week for $70M for design costs, consultant expenses and permits for the renovation. ECU AD Gilbert has recommended naming a proposed indoor building on the Grady-White Boats Athletic Campus as the Isley Indoor Performance Center in recognition of Van and Jennifer Isley, who made a $5M contribution to the Pirates Unite Campaign for Comprehensive Excellence. Gilbert: "An indoor facility on our athletics footprint will be a powerful tool in recruiting for our coaches and be an essential space for our sport programs throughout the year. The investment by Van and Jennifer Isley makes this project realistic and we will begin looking at distinctive designs. We have had numerous individuals step up for the campaign to move this facility forward and strengthen our athletics department." (link)

Pretty interesting development in the sports media rights world as the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury have reached a deal that removes their long-held television rights from cable, ESPN’s Windhorst reports. Starting next season, the teams' games will be broadcast for free over-the-air and streamed online on a new DTC service, as Windhorst explains. “The teams' contract with Bally Sports Arizona, where their games have been shown on cable since 2003, has expired and will not be renewed. The games instead will be available on local Arizona television stations in Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma and streaming firm Kiswe on a new platform. The shift could cost the Suns tens of millions in guaranteed money per year in the short term, but it will boost the number of households the games are available in from around 800K to more than 2.8M.” Suns Owner Ishiba: “We're not focusing on money. We're focusing on winning, success and taking care of fans, taking care of the community. What happens is you always end up making money. It always works out. We're going to have more fans than ever before. We're going to have more people who will have eyeballs on Devin Booker and Deandre [Ayton] and Kevin Durant, Chris [Paul] and cheer the team on. And more people buying merchandise because they're bigger fans." (link)
