ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the league’s extended media rights agreement with ESPN “has added a great deal of stability. It's disappointing we're in this situation for a league that has had such great success, but it is what it is. But no question – this has added tremendous stability with what's occurred over the last 12 or 18 months.” Phillips goes on to remark that “people are paying attention. We've had a really nice run lately. We added three really good schools and two amazing markets in amazing states in SMU, Cal and Stanford. We've coupled that with [answering the] question that our network’s not going anywhere. … It's a clear commitment by ESPN to the ACC’s long-term future from a media partnership. This has been a mutually beneficial relationship. There's a collective focus on the future…and we continue to build, as we've done in the past, additional value for both [parties].” (link)

Tennessee is increasing basketball ticket prices and required donations by an average of 16%, including a 10% talent fee, across most of Food City Center for the 2025-26 season. Vols AD Danny White says the hike will help UT invest more heavily in hoops. “I think our fans know we have been aggressively reinvesting in our programs. I am not sitting around trying to turn a huge profit. That is not our role. We are trying to win at a high level. We have our foot on the accelerator rounding the curve at top speed right now.” White expects UT to generate $7M in gross annual revenue from the increase in ticket costs and the added talent fee, which he said would put UT in the top-third of the SEC in annual basketball revenue. Part of that revenue, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel’s Mike WIlson, will come from the creation of the new Riverside Club, a lower-level club linked to coming club seats. Food City Center's capacity will shrink by 260 with the installation of new seats. The cost of a seat with access to the club will be $2,550 before the talent fee. The largest increase will be seen by fans who were grandfathered in with a season-ticket rate that hasn’t changed in years if not decades, according to White. Those rates are being reset to be consistent with the going rate for the section. (link)

Connecticut AD David Benedict explains that “at the end of the day, [the $100M renovation of Gampel Arena] has to achieve three goals: that it’s impacting our fans, our student-athletes on game day or our student athletes day-to-day. So that’s the lens that we’re really evaluating everything through.” As for what that looks like, the Hartford Courant’s Kenneth Gosselin notes what is “likely to emerge in the next few years are upgraded, expanded concessions and premium club space for donors. Two locker rooms – no longer needed because of the separate practice facility – are likely to be combined and redesigned to accommodate heavy game-day traffic of visitors and recruits associated with a high-profile collegiate sports program, Benedict said. Also part of the thinking is a ‘training table’ where scholarship student-athletes typically eat one meal a day and have snacks that are outside their campus meal plan. The food and drinks are usually mapped out by a registered sports dietician.” Benedict adds: “We’re not going to come in here and go crazy, but there are things we can do to make this less institutional. The same thing on the outside of this building. Part of that could be putting some LED ribbon around it, like we have inside. That could bring some life and energy to the building.” In addition to improving the fan experience, Benedict says it will be important to maximize revenues. “We have to be constantly looking for ways to increase our efficiencies and drive more revenues. We’re absolutely leaving money on the table here.” (link)

The South Carolina Legislature’s Joint Bond Review Committee and the State Fiscal Accountability Authority has approved South Carolina’s plans to reimagine Williams-Brice Stadium. The university will return to the committees later this year to seek formal approval on the full scope and cost of the project. Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati: “This will be a transformational project that will elevate and amplify our national profile and serve as a point of pride for the university. Once complete, the stadium project will generate new revenue streams that will help provide a sustainable future for all of our Gamecock athletics programs and offer our fans and donors with a first-class game day experience.” (link)

+ Fontenot v. NCAA plaintiffs’ attorney Garrett Broshuis says over 150 athletes have opted out of the proposed House settlement and joined the Fontenot case, according to multiple reports. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes the group includes “40 All-Americans & 70+ all-conference selections” and “pushes the number of total House opt-outs to more than 300 – still a fraction of the class (40K+). Another 200+ have filed House objections as well.” (link, link)
+ Maryland baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall has filed a "Pavia-like" lawsuit against the NCAA, according to Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich, who explains Ciulla-Hall “argues his 2020-21 year at DII Stonehill College shouldn't count, both under recent precedent & due to COVID-related extenuating circumstances. This is a very similar fact pattern to the lawsuit filed last week by Wisconsin football's Nyzier Fourqurean.” (link)
+ New Mexico lawmakers have introduced a bill making $2.5M appropriations available to New Mexico and New Mexico State to fund athletics for FY26, according to attorney/SUNY Cortland professor Daniel Greene, who adds: “But NMSU's $ is contingent on hiring an athletic director with min. 5 yrs NIL policy experience.” (link)
+ Lawmakers in Georgia have introduced a bill that would exempt NIL compensation received by college athletes from state income tax. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “This bill would also put Georgia schools on equal footing with some other SEC schools. Tennessee, Florida, and Texas are states with no state income tax.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo examines St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino’s reinvigoration of the program, and President Fr. Brian Shanley acknowledges that “yeah, sure, there’s some reputational risk because of things that have happened before, but I think Rick is at a point in his life where he’s learned from things that have happened in the past. I think he’d be the first one to tell you he’s done things that he regrets. Who doesn’t when you get to be that age? I know I have. I’m a believer in forgiveness and new beginnings as a priest, and I think Rick’s going to do a great job for St. John’s.” Red Storm AD Ed Kull sees the men’s hoops program “as the centerpiece, where we got to help fundraising, got to help enrollment, got to help our marketing profile, got to help our engagement of alums, got to help in the community. And that’s what Rick Pitino and basketball is doing at St John’s.” Vitaminwater/BodyArmor Founder Mike Repole notes this is “exactly the vision that I’ve had for this university for 20 years. College athletics has always been a business. Now it’s as much of a business as ever before. … I’m measuring my success with St John’s in two ways: Madison Square Garden with 19,000 fans and St. John’s with record enrollment. If those two things don’t happen, I failed.” (link)

North Carolina Men’s Basketball HC Hubert Davis said on his weekly radio show that the “old model for Carolina basketball just doesn’t work” when it comes to the construction of the staff, and “I am gonna increase the staff, and it’s needed. I never would have thought in the four years that I took the job that I’m 100% (on) what is needed is a general manager. There’s just so much stuff out there. … I mentioned owner, GM, fundraiser, basketball coach, it’s so much on the plate that’ll take you away doing what’s the most important thing: coaching basketball. Yes, we’re gonna hire a GM. We need a director of marketing and fundraising for NIL, for program needs. There needs to be a video coordinator with graphics and recruiting coordinator. All those different types of stuff that have to be built out, whether it’s from specific hires or grad students.” (link)

ESPN, Fox and CBS all remain open to participating in a media rights package with the expanded Pac-12, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who is told by a source that media rights discussions are still in an “exploratory phase” and adds: “It’s unclear how much interest each network has, but another source characterized conversations with prospective partners as ‘productive.’” (link)

USC is issuing an RFP seeking a third-party food and beverage provider for six of its athletic venues, including the Galen Center (basketball and volleyball), the school’s under-construction soccer/lacrosse and baseball stadiums, and several Olympic sports venues that don’t have permanent F&B setups, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes the request does not include the LA Coliseum. Trojans Senior Assoc. AD for Operations & Capital Initiatives Jeff Fucci expects Legends, which handles the Coliseum’s F&B operations, to bid on the new business as well. Fucci tells McCormick: “For USC Athletics, the food and beverage piece has not been vertically integrated, and it’s been disparate in terms of the level of service and providers. Create economies of scale, provide something for all our fans we think is going to be quality and cost-effective and give us that one entity to go back to (for accountability). And for both parties as you package the venues with the exclusivity, it’s financially beneficial for everyone. We want to grow revenue; we want to grow revenue with a partner.” (link)

Fox will launch a DTC service by the end of the year, according to Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch, who said during today’s Q2 earnings call: “Our only disappointment in sports is that we will not be moving forward with Venu, [which]...was to be another distribution outlet for our brands to access consumers in the market, wherever they are. And that is what we continue to be focused on: Maximum distribution of our content, whether that be traditional [TV], digital streaming or our own DTC offering in the future.” The streaming service, Murdoch added, will look to draw from the pool of cord-cutters and cord-nevers rather than cannibalize the traditional cable bundle. As such, he acknowledged that subscriber expectations “will be modest” and priced accordingly. “And it’s also important to note, with those modest expectations, we do not expect any additional incremental rights cost. This service will be a package of our existing content and existing brands, targeting the consumers that are not currently in the bundle. So the incremental cost will be relatively low, certainly relative to what our peers are spending in this space.” Fox will share more about the new service in the coming weeks and months. (link)

Omaha AD Adrian Dowell’s contract extension, which runs through November 30, 2028, includes a base salary of $350K, according to CollegeAD, which reports Dowell can earn bonuses ranging from $1K to $10K for different academic and athletic accomplishments. If Omaha parts ways with Dowell without cause, he would be owed the remainder of his base salary up to $700K. Dowell would owe the Mavs $137K should he leave before the end of his contract; however, that figure drops to $68,500 if Chancellor Joanne Li is no longer with the school. (link)

James Madison has developed a new revenue plan that includes a change to football season ticket prices, which now range from $135 for certain public seats to $1,725 for club seats. Additionally, the Dukes are instituting a specific "Entry Process" for new football season ticket purchases. Those wishing to buy season tickets who did not have them in 2024 will now pay a $10 fee for establishment as an official season ticket interested party. The $10 fee allows the purchaser to be “part of the season ticket process, which awards selection times based on Duke Club Priority Points. Those who choose to be a part of the entry process are not guaranteed tickets as all new tickets will be based upon availability during the selection process commencing in June.” Dukes AD Matt Roan: "As we engaged in this process, it was critical that we consider our constituents and their impact. While we certainly need their help to maintain and elevate success, we are aware that our alumni, friends and fans can only support within their means. We're extremely proud of being 'The Valley's Team' and are blessed to have the unwavering support of this community. We're grateful for everyone, wherever they are, doing what they can to advance our mission and contribute to our success. It's as important as ever to continue to do whatever you can and to get others to join the ranks." (link)

Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell says one of his biggest priorities will be increasing football and basketball attendance next season, telling the Springfield News-Leader’s Wyatt Wheeler: "I do think Springfield loves the Bears, and we have to give them a reason to come out to games. I do think we've missed a generation of fans along the line." Ransdell believes fans in the 35-40 age range in particular aren’t showing up, and while winning helps he plans to take a more active approach. Once hoops season ends, Ransdell plans to try and reorganize the marketing department before sifting through demographic data to come up with a messaging plan. Ransdell anticipates more advertising through television and adding more content creation to the staff. "We're gonna play in some spaces a little bit more next year. We have to go to Springfield. We can't just rely on Springfield to come to us." As it relates to announced attendance and actual attendance, Ransdell says: "I don't want to just throw out random numbers; I want to be within a reasonable ballpark. It's not a perfect science by any stretch. We'll look this offseason to see if we want to define a formula and let everyone know what that is in the future. But if there's 2,000 in the building, I'm not going to patronize everybody and say there's 5,000. I can't speak to maybe exactly how everything was done previously, but we will give out a realistic number." On the football side, Ransdell points out that "from a revenue standpoint, we're not that far away from all the season ticket revenue of all of last year. Hopefully, we surpass that here in February, and then you're kind of playing with house money. We rolled out season tickets really early, so we know what we need to sell from March through Sept. 13." Playfly CEO Craig Sloan joins the On the Fly podcast to discuss several topics, including the evolution of college sports. Sloan explains the company’s default position as it relates to the changes in college sports is that “this is good. The idea that they're enhancing the experience and the opportunity for student-athletes in particular is something that we want to lean into. We've never felt like we wanted to get defensive and try to protect our rights or try to protect our turf. We've leaned into it sort of differently and thought about it from a perspective of what is the opportunity that's there for our partners and then therefore what is the opportunity for Playfly? … There’s a lot of opportunity for modernization, and that could be through the facilities that are bound – especially if you look at some of these big Power 4 schools today and what's happening inside of their facilities – there's going to be a lot of development that's going to be happening from a construction basis. But that's going to create a better fan experience [and] also opportunity for new revenue growth for premium areas and some things that were bound to happen. A lot of these stadiums are long in the tooth and need to be updated and it's just something that we believe is going to enhance the experience, so Playfly wants to be there at the center of it.” More. MAC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Institutional Services/SWA Kristin Williams joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on her Career Hustle, including how her upbringing as the child of high-performing athletes and athletic administrators and her own experience as a collegiate athlete set her on her current career trajectory. Williams, who shares that she is on the autism spectrum, discusses the power of DEI and DEIB programming as well as the importance of representation and advocacy in today's fast-moving landscape. She also examines challenges that student-athletes are facing, talks about the "secret sauce" to effective networking, and shares her habits for sustaining success. Williams assures that DEI is still alive and well and explains: “Part of that is really realizing that DEI is not just about race, it’s not just about ethnicity, it’s not just about religion. It is the entirety of everything. You are a human and you are different than me, and DEI is about including all of that, understanding it, respecting it, getting the differences and let's use our differences to actually grow and be better. … We’re going to talk about all the differences and it's going to be a respectful space. We're going to disagree and that's fine…but we're going to be better because we're different.” Lots more on Connect. (link)

Under the agreement, Nielsen’s measurements will cover all CBS broadcast networks, Paramount-owned cable channels, the Paramount+ streaming service and PlutoTV. The NFL is exploring options to create professional men’s and women’s flag football leagues and has received a “tremendous amount of interest” from investors, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell, who says: “That'll be a big part of the Olympics in a few years. But it's also something that we want to look at all levels, the youth level all the way up, and we're exploring very aggressively now an opportunity to create a professional-type league for both men and women.” A source tells SBJ’s Ben Fischer the interest from investors includes entities not involved with the NFL. Additionally, the extent to which the NFL would be involved has yet to be determined, as Fischer explains the league could be the “league organizer” or “more of a collaborator.” Goodell: “This is something that we've been working on for several months, and there’s a tremendous amount of interest from players, from investors, to people who recognize, particularly, that women's sports are in a place where it's real and it’s something we all want to be part of.” (link)
