Iowa AD Beth Goetz discussed revenue sharing with student-athletes against the comparative of facility upgrades with the Presidential Committee on Athletics yesterday: “You’re going to see, I think, here at Iowa and across the country that people will be more thoughtful about projects that aren’t necessities in the moment and that don’t help you drive revenue. To be candid, we wish this wasn’t the moment in time that we needed to focus on that project (upgrades to Carver-Hawkeye Arena) as well. But this building is a revenue-generator, and it’s also 42 years old. [...] At this moment in time, I think the prudent, responsible thing to do from a fiscal standpoint is to ensure that we have a solid financial plan. So my approach to this project is that we will complete what is philanthropically possible. But our intent is certainly not to take on additional debt to do the project.” Goetz went on to say she’s confident in the plan the Hawkeyes have created for revenue sharing, but wouldn’t be providing any information publicly about the percentage allocation per sport. Kansas State AD Gene Taylor begins a three-part series dissecting the future for the Wildcats amid constant industry change. In the first segment, Taylor says KSU will fully participate in revenue sharing with student-athletes & goes on to add, “...we are looking at ticket increases for basketball. We’re looking at other increases across the board for next year in football, but we have to be very careful not to drive our market away, yet really have them understand we need to dive deep into every single revenue source we have. [...] Where are we missing dollars that we could recoup that can help us get to that $20M? (link)

Financial Results…
+ In FY24, Ole Miss did $149.3M in operating revenues against $157.01M in operating expenses for a deficit of $7.71M. Football ($18.13M) & Baseball ($1.06M) were the two sports that ended the year in the black. Rebels AD Keith Carter: “We've chosen to spend a little more in certain places, and I think that's been good for us. But obviously, we have to be fiscally responsible. That's something that we have to do, and we're expected to do. And I feel like we've done that. Just because we show a deficit there in that report doesn't mean that we don't have the funds to plug those holes in other ways.” On key revenue opportunities: “...we're looking at ways to potentially grow our stadiums and adding premium areas in basketball, doing creative things where we can grow ticket and donation revenue. But overall, as far as just the folks stepping up and our fans stepping up, I think that's been really encouraging.” (link)
+ Out in Corvallis, Oregon State did $120.31M in revenue over $112.88M in expenses for a surplus of $7.43M. It’s the first time since 2013 the Beavers have ended on the plus side of the ledger. Of particular note: “Football had a net profit of $23.2 million, reporting $49.1M in revenue, and $25.9M in expenses. That is a gain of nearly $7 million over 2023, when football profits were $16.51 million.” More from The Oregonian, including OSU’s current debt level of $108.7M. (link)
+ Overall ticket sales were up year-over-year for Memphis as the Tigers generated $9.7M in FY24 compared to $8.79M a year earlier. The Commercial Appeal’s Jonah Dylan indicates the overall budget was balanced at $67M. In its most visible sports: “Football ticket revenue dropped from $4.41M in 2022 to $4.36M in 2023. [...] Men's basketball sales rose from $4.1M to $4.97M.” (link)

Fundraising Files…
+ Butler announces a $12M future estate gift from alumna & Trustee Rebecca Graham Paul with the majority of the funding going towards the creation of the Rebecca Graham Paul Endowed Fund for Women’s Athletics Excellence. As both the largest documented estate commitment in University history and the largest gift ever to Butler Athletics, the fund will provide support for primary initiatives in women’s athletics, including the cheer and dance programs. (link)
+ Denver announces the Pioneer Women's Athletics Endowment with a goal of growing it to $1M with $200K already committed. Pioneers AD Josh Berlo: “This endowment will directly support our women's programs, and the eight women that serve in head coaching roles who help develop our young student-athletes in a holistic environment at Denver. As we enter a new era of women's athletics, we are fully committed to being amongst the best in the nation in empowering women through athletics.” (link)
+ Siena is pushing to raise $4.5M for a new Lacrosse facility with $3.2M already in the bag. Saints Men’s Lacrosse HC Liam Gleason: “There’s a select group of teams in the country that have dedicated lacrosse-only facilities. So for us to be in that mix, you’re talking about some of the higher-end ACC, Big Ten schools. That’s going to be exciting.” (link)

President Donald Trump has signed the “No Men in Women’s Sports Executive Order” prohibiting transgender women from female sports. Trump: “The radical left has waged an all out campaign to erase the very concept of biological sex and replace it with a militant transgender ideology. With this executive order, the war on women’s sports is over.” (link)

A number of NCAA leaders, including NCAA Board of Governors Chair/Baylor President Linda Livingstone, over a dozen DI commissioners and ADs, coaches association CEOs and more, have penned a letter to Congress over concerns around student-athlete employment. The quartet writes, in part: “We are gravely concerned by the looming threat of a sweeping employment mandate, which could potentially turn all student-athletes (regardless of where they compete or what sport they compete in) into employees of their universities. This type of broad employment mandate would be financially untenable for the vast majority of America’s collegiate athletic departments, and would likely result in thousands of shuttered programs. Many of the worst impacts are expected to fall on women's sports. With this in mind, we urge you to cosponsor and pass legislation affirming that student-athletes will not be deemed employees of their universities.” Full letter. (link)

Wisconsin Football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean argued in front of a U.S. District Court on Tuesday he could make hundreds of thousands of dollars in NIL monies if he’s ruled eligible to play during the 2025 season. However, Fourqurean indicated there was no signed contract for the projected earnings, as well as stating he made $5,000 in 2023 & $45,000 from deals in 2024. Fourqurean is awaiting a ruling from Judge William Conley & has until Friday to opt out of the NFL Draft. (link)

Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell on Men’s Basketball’s challenging season under first-year head coach Cuonzo Martin as the Bears sit at 8-15 (1-11 MVC): “This provides us all a lesson in patience. Every situation is different. Coach Martin wasn't coaching last year. You can look at others who were brought in and had a whole bunch of players from their previous team and that's not the case here. I think trying to reinvent a roster when starting in April is an uphill battle. [...] I think they have a really good plan this spring in recruiting. We just need to give him those resources so he can go out and do what he needs to do to sign those kids.” (link)

A trio of writers from The Athletic outline the next steps of the proposed House settlement, as well as gathering some new commentary on the latest developments. Herrick Feinstein Sports Law Group co-chair Irwin Kishner: “My strong sense is that when it gets to this level, way more matters are closed, in the sense of they go forward as opposed to they blow up. It’s not unheard of, but I think if you’re looking at the percentages, it seems to me there’s a real desire in the political situation to sort of make this happen.” Troutman Pepper Locke litigation partner Cal Stein: “The House settlement started with the goal of the NCAA putting an end to the losses it has taken in these litigations all over the country, but the great irony is that it’s really just going to lead to more lawsuits.” As for potential Congressional intervention for college athletics, Stein comments, “I’m a little bit skeptical, or maybe a lot skeptical, that we’re anywhere near that happening. I don’t know that it’s a priority for Congress.” (link)

More on the bill proposal in Georgia yesterday that would exempt student-athletes from paying income taxes on NIL earnings. State representative Brandon Beach, who was one of the co-sponsors of the bill: “Listen, recruiting is a very, very competitive sport. When you’re recruiting these five-star athletes, they all have agents and we’re competing with Tennessee, Texas and Florida who have no state income tax. Eventually, we’ll get there and we won’t have a state income tax. I hope that happens, but until then we’ve got to get Kirby and these football coaches and basketball coaches, these coaches a tool in their toolbox to be able to compete. [...] When you’re talking about a $750,000 to a $1 million contract, these young kids and the agents say, ‘Hey, if you go to Texas, you’ll make another $40,000 by not paying state income tax’ or whatever the amount is. That can sway the difference in an athlete going somewhere else.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter with updates on Wisconsin football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean’s attempt for additional years of eligibility: “The judge in the Fourqurean v. NCAA case did not rule after today’s hearing. He’s taken the motion for TRO/preliminary injunction under advisement.” (link); From Law360: “The NCAA is pushing back against a University of Wisconsin football player’s request for a temporary injunction against its allegedly anticompetitive eligibility rule, arguing the rule achieves the exact opposite by giving more students the opportunity to play.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down the impact of the legacy Pac-12 schools’ “Comcast overpayment fiasco” on their finances: “The negotiated settlement in the fall of 2023 resulted in each of the departed schools having $5M withheld from their conference distributions, with an additional $1.5M ‘supplement contribution’ added to the tab. If we assume the supplement contributions were made in the 2024 fiscal year — it wasn’t required: they had until Dec. 31, 2024 — then all 10 would have experienced a $6.5M decrease in conference distributions that was reflected in the reports submitted to the NCAA a few weeks ago. … In its 2024 financial report to the NCAA, Utah showed a $17M operating shortfall. An addendum to the report noted: ‘Most of the deficit can be traced to the breakup of the Pac-12 Conference and significantly reduced distributions due to: The negotiated exit agreement; Legal fees; Overpayment of prior year television distributions.’” Oregon experienced a similar shift and Wilner posits: “Given that $6.5M is rooted in the negotiated settlement with Washington State and Oregon State, that seemingly would leave $3.5M to the reduction in revenue connected to the Comcast fiasco. … More clarity to the financial picture will arrive in May, when the Pac-12’s tax filings for 2024 — the legacy schools’ final year in the conference — are disclosed. They will include conference distributions from media rights and the football and basketball postseasons. But enough information is currently available to indicate each legacy school has absorbed a hit of roughly $12M resulting from the Comcast scandal and the settlement that followed the breakup of the conference.” (link)

Following a 16-game season in 2024, Texas Football HC Steve Sarkisian may opt to eliminate the Longhorns spring game. His thoughts from mid December have not changed, per sources, “I do think spring ball, at some point is going to become a casualty of this. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because I do think there's something to be said for phase one, phase two and phase three that the NFL utilizes in its off-season, coming out of free agency and the draft as they build the team. So I just think there's going to have to be a real overhaul that's ultimately going to have to take place." (link)

Virginia Tech Football HC Brent Pry talks to The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel about roster construction & NIL deals: “We had a young man leave the program that he, his agent and his family felt like he was worth $400,000. And we certainly valued this guy, but not to that extent. And when you look at the inventory, what was in the transfer portal, there were multiple guys at the same position that were much more affordable, so we could spread our money around a little bit better and be as good or better. …Our roster is much more in line and sensible from what guys are making than we’ve been. There’s not as much variance. Guys that are two-year starters are kind of in the same neighborhood. Guys that are first-year starters, kind of all in the same neighborhood. Guys that are quality backups, in the same neighborhood.” (link)

New Nike CEO Elliott Hill has one particularly powerful supporter in Michael Jordan, who writes in an email to Fortune’s Devin Gordon: “I’m a huge fan of Elliott. He’s exactly the right person to guide Nike right now. His passion for the company, his experience, and his incredible leadership speak for themselves.” Gordon goes on to examine whether Hill is, in fact, “exactly the right person” to correct Nike’s course, and Elliott, who previously spent 32 years with Nike before retiring, acknowledges there were ups and downs, even during his previous stint as an executive. One involved, as Gordon puts it, “shifting from innovation to nostalgia. Nike cranked out endless new remixes of Nike’s three greatest-hit sneaker lines, the Air Jordan, the Air Force 1, and the Dunk. All of which made perfect sense given the once-in-a-century macro conditions” during the pandemic. Hill notes that revenue took off “and you’re now selling retail, so you’re getting 2x revenue, not just the wholesale revenue. “The mistake we made is that when things started to normalize, we didn’t shift back to running the offense that we know so well.” Hill goes on to remark that “there’s evolutionary innovation – you’re making tweaks to materials, foam construction, how you laced the shoe, the outsole pattern, et cetera. And then there’s revolutionary innovation: groundbreaking, jaw-dropping, what-the-hell-did-Nike-just-do? innovation. You’ve got to do both. … I don’t know if we’ll ever see again where we are today – three shoes being as big of a piece of a pie as they are. I don’t think it’s healthy. We need a broader base. … We need to be looking forward and trying to take consumers somewhere they’ve never been before.” Lots more. (link)
