Ithaca AD Susan Bassett will retire at the end of the academic year after a dozen years leading her alma mater. President La Jerne Terry Cornish: “Susan Bassett is a trailblazer and an absolute treasure in the world of college athletics. She is an inspiring role model to countless student athletes, many of whom she coached to championship seasons, and she has been recognized nationally by her peers for elevating entire athletic programs at three different institutions. Here at Ithaca College, Susan was an inspiration to the entire campus from the very beginning of her collegiate career as an undergraduate student.” The college will launch the search for the new AD this spring with a goal of appointing a new AD by July 1. The NCAA Board of Governors have updated the transgender student-athlete participation policy following President Donald Trump’s recent executive order. Effective immediately, the new policy will limit women’s sport competition to individuals assigned female at birth and leave men’s sport participation open to all eligible student-athletes. Also, the latest policy overrides any previous eligibility reviews and does allow “student-athletes assigned male at birth to practice with women's teams and receive benefits such as medical care while practicing.” President Charlie Baker: “We strongly believe that clear, consistent, and uniform eligibility standards would best serve today's student-athletes instead of a patchwork of conflicting state laws and court decisions. To that end, President Trump's order provides a clear, national standard. […] The updated policy combined with these resources follows through on the NCAA's constitutional commitment to deliver intercollegiate athletics competition and to protect, support and enhance the mental and physical health of student-athletes. This national standard brings much needed clarity as we modernize college sports for today's student-athletes.” (link)

Members of the NESCACFBPA join the D3football Around the Nation Podcast to share their plans to try to change NESCAC rules prohibiting Football participation in the DIII playoffs. The group has taken the advice of Yale (DI) Football student-athlete Mason Shipp who was integral in getting the Ivy League (DI) to reverse its policy regarding postseason compettion, with Shipp advising them to form an association with representatives from around the conference so the collective voice would be too powerful to deny. President Vaughn Seelicke says the NESCACFBPA members will work to raise awareness on their respective campuses and meet with ADs and ultimately presidents, who will make the decision. Conference CEOs are slated to meet in April when proposals would be considered. More. (link)

Wisconsin (DI) Football student-athlete/former Grand Valley State student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean has had his preliminary injunction granted, thus giving him an extra year of eligibility. U.S. District Court Judge William Conley took issue with the NCAA waiver process, specifically the waiver Fourqurean sought for his 2021 season at GVSU following his father’s passing, writing that the NCAA is enjoined from enforcing the Five-Year Rule “as to plaintiff absent a more meaningful demonstration that exceptions to that rule should not apply to plaintiff’s requested, additional season of eligibility given the unique circumstances surrounding his 2021-2022 season at Division II GVSU.” Also of note, Conley did not agree with the premise non-DI eligibility should be exempt and an individual’s eligibility should begin when one enrolls at a DI institution, writing such a move would result in: “largely destroying defendant’s differentiated product to the point that college football programs would likely become nothing more than a minor league feeder system for the NFL where players develop for years (or even a decade) until they have optimized their chances of being drafted and sticking on an NFL roster. As concerning is the prospect that Division II and Division III football programs would become nothing more than minor league teams for the most powerful Division I football programs.” (link, link - full decision)

The NCAA responded to the Fourqurean decision: “The NCAA supports all student-athletes maximizing their name, image and likeness, but today’s ruling creates even more uncertainty and may lead to countless high school students losing opportunities to compete in college athletics. Altering the enforcement of foundational eligibility rules - approved and supported by membership leaders - that are designed to help ensure competition is safe and fair for current and future student-athletes makes a shifting environment even more unsettled. The NCAA and its member schools are making changes to deliver more benefits to student-athletes, but the recent patchwork of state laws and court opinions continue to make clear partnering with Congress is essential to provide stability for the future of all college athletes.” (link); Looks like the NCAA plans to appeal yesterday’s U.S. District Court decision to grant Wisconsin Football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean additional eligibility. Chatham announces a trio of major developments. First is the addition of Men’s and Women’s Wrestling, expanding the department to 25 sport programs. Second, the university has rolled out the plan for the “Athletic Alley” project which will include a state-of-the-art weight room, Wrestling practice room, locker rooms, batting cages and more with the goal of it serving as a hub for athletics on the Eastside campus. Lastly, Chatham has unveiled its Purple & Gray Club as a fundraising arm for athletics. AD Leonard Trevino: “Our student-athletes have found great success both on the field of play and in the classroom, and we invite you to help us continue our investment in our student-athletes.” (link)

Russell Sage will add Women’s Flag Football as its 22nd varsity sport starting next spring as 185 high school teams competed in the sport this spring. RSC President Matthew Shaftel: “Flag football is the fastest-growing sport in the world, offering a level of accessibility and inclusivity that traditional football has not. As an institution with roots in women's empowerment and the top institution for social mobility in the Northeast today, we're proud to be the first institution in the Capital Region to launch women's flag football at the collegiate level.
