With Rick Hart’s announcement yesterday, On3’s Billy Embody writes on what SMU needs in a new AD & points to three key attributes: 1) Power conference experience (“Much like new SMU president Jay Hartzell is well-versed in the landscape of making a major move, the university would like its athletic director to be of that caliber of a leader.”); 2) Exploring new sponsorship opportunities, evaluating current agreements (“There are new sponsorship areas to explore both with physical space in SMU facilities and the school’s media offerings. With a new athletic director, even SMU’s agreement with Learfield will get looked at. That is an area where if SMU opted to go in-house, sources are optimistic that the monetary growth from that move would pay dividends.”); and, 3) Bolster fundraising (“The leadership who nabbed Hartzell know this is an area that can be addressed by a new athletic director. Hartzell’s early goal is to get more donors in line, which the new athletic director also has to move quickly on.”). (link); Speculation is already centering on the potential of SMU to hire Texas AD Chris Del Conte given Jay Hartzell’s relocation from Austin to Dallas. Longhorns Wire’s Hayden Victoria: “Both SMU and Texas are known for their substantial name, image and likeness licensing money. It’s uncertain how much SMU is willing to invest in Del Conte or if there’s any interest.” (link); In addition to Del Conte, potential candidates per various media outlets include Tennessee’s Danny White, Arkansas’ Hunter Yurachek, Boise State’s Jeramiah Dickey, College of Charleston’s Matt Roberts, Florida’s Scott Stricklin, North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham, Texas Tech’s Kirby Hocutt & Arkansas State’s Jeff Purinton. Maryland-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall, who is suing the NCAA on the grounds of additional eligibility given years played at the DII level, similar to Wisconsin Football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean, sees his attempt got denied by a U.S. District Court Judge in Massachusetts. Penn State has launched the Legacy Fund with an eye on resources for student-athlete scholarships & upgrades for Nittany Lions facilities. Notably: “To help grow the fund, fans will see nominal increases associated with a variety of items, including but not limited to season and single-game tickets for all ticketed sports, season and single-game football parking, concessions, novelties and purchases at the Blue & White Golf Courses.” (link)

Tennessee State could run out of money by April or May, according to Interim President Dwayne Tucker, who laid out a five-year plan for financial sustainability, student enrollment, and recruitment that he said the university will present to the legislature at the end of the month. Regarding the $2.1B the Biden administration said the state of Tennessee owes TSU, Tucker said he does not believe the university should sue the state over the money, telling the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators: “I think the best way to go about that – and everybody’s got a point of view about it – but I think we should also be realistic about those opportunities and the $2.1B. Really there’s no accounts payable setup in the state of Tennessee to pay us $2.1B.” Furthermore, there is no guarantee that TSU would win the lawsuit, and Tucker explains: “In the middle of that, it just doesn’t make sense to walk into the same people you need money from to pay your bills and say ‘Okay now we’re going to sue you.’ I just don’t think that’s a realistic thing to do.” Obtaining the $540M that Representative Harold Love (D-Nashville) said the school has been underfunded by is more realistic, and Tucker notes: “Using the money that has already been identified that way, all we’re asking the state to do is not bail out Tennessee State, but to provide a bridge to our long-term sustainability over the next five years.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini had this to say about Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley’s future with the Sun Devils, ”[Making the NCAA Tournament] is an expectation, it’s not a goal. It’s kind of one of those minimum requirements that we want to have tournament teams certainly in basketball, but in all of our sports. It’s my responsibility to look throughout the organization and figure out what are the pieces that we need to tweak and adjust and add to in order to have that kind of success. We’re not in this for participation trophies, we’re in this to win championships. [Hurley] and I have that conversation off and on, what are the missing pieces? He’s our coach and we want to support him as we’re in the middle of the season. We talked yesterday and said, 'Hey, we just gotta exhale.' We gotta make basketball fun again. … And we gotta look hard at the reasons why we can’t be successful and look at those adjustments that need to be made, and there’s obviously a time and a place where we’re prepared to do that.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick “might seem like an unlikely recruiter. But he's leaning into an unmatched strength and delivering a clear pitch on the trail,” according to ESPN’s Eli Lederman, who catches up with several players and coaches to get a glimpse of UNC’s new recruiting approach. Tar Heels QB commit Au’Tori Newkirk puts it like this: "The focus with this new staff is on preparing everything for the next level. Everything is being run like it's the next level. The motto is that we're going to be the 33rd team in the NFL." Belichick’s first recruiting stop was to Tar Heels pledge Zavion Griffin-Haynes’ of Rolesville High School. During the 90 minutes in the office of Rolesville HC Ranier Rackley, Belichick “broke down Griffin-Haynes' film, offered the same pass-rush pointers he used to coach Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor with the New York Giants in the 1980s and detailed a multiyear plan for Griffin-Haynes' future at North Carolina.” Rackley: "He told Zavion straight up: You're going to college, but you're an NFL player. I see you as a first-rounder already based on who you are and what you bring to the table." Defensive tackle commit Nicco Maggio says the first contact he received was from GM Michael Lombardi. “My dad realized who he was after the call and said he used to watch him on TV for fantasy football advice. That made you realize how crazy all this is." (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos catches up with several Power 4 collective operators and personnel staffers who anonymously opened up about this year’s football recruiting cycle. A Big Ten collective operator: “The amount of times a recruit came back to the table to renegotiate or had a family member negotiate and agree to it, and all of a sudden they start comparing notes with teammates and want to hire an agent. And then they want to renegotiate. … I don’t think the numbers are gonna go back down.” A source from an SEC collective: “I’d say this class was harder than ever. At the 11th hour, you’re getting just massive offers for guys. We lost a couple of guys who were getting four times the number that we were offering from an SEC school. Especially with the House case money coming in this year.” The range for a high-end QB runs from $500K to $3.5M, and an ACC collective rep says: “There were a couple kids in last year’s class that signed at a number that was shockingly low to me. If you’re being real, the first year has to be $500K at minimum.” Offensive linemen, linebackers, receivers and cornerbacks have seen their value drastically increase, and the SEC source says of LBs: “A guy you could get for $100K last year, schools are paying $800K for this cycle. Wide receivers, too. I think how much the freshman group of wide receivers this last season got paid has something to do with it.” More. (link)

Plans for Alabama’s future basketball facility have been modified to include a courtyard for the men’s players, and a separate courtyard on the other side of the building for women’s players. BYU announces plans for a new hitting facility at Miller Park for its baseball and softball programs. Construction on the new indoor facility is underway with completion projected by summer 2025. The 6,000-square foot facility will be located down the third base line at Larry H. Miller Field between the current stands and the baseball bullpen. It includes four batting cages with field turf plus a new baseball VIP hosting area above the facility with 200 field level seats just east of the Cougars’ dugout. The new facility was designed by CORE Architecture of Pleasant Grove with the project construction by Big D Construction of Salt Lake City. (link)

The Marshall Board of Governors has approved construction of an addition to the Shewey Building that will provide a new, premium fan experience for football and other events at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The deck will also serve as revenue generation for NIL opportunities. Marshall’s NIL vendor, Athletic Advantage, will fund construction of the $1.8M addition through a $1M naming rights gift, as well as the sale of memberships for the two-tiered club and deck. The space also includes new field level and stadium seating configurations in parts of the venue. Construction on the facility is expected to begin this spring with a grand opening in September. Massachusetts has awarded $10K to student Noah Lee, who made a layup, free throw, three-pointer and half-court shot during halftime of the women’s basketball game against St. Bonaventure earlier this week. The promotion company, Odds On Promotions, initially ruled that Lee’s foot was not behind the line on the half-court attempt and, per UMass’ agreement with Odds On, the university had to provide video from the four broadcast-angle cameras used for the game to the promotion company for review. UMass initially offered a consolation package including tickets to upcoming basketball games, gift cards to the Mullins Center concession stand and some UMass spirit wear, but by Friday morning, the athletic department released a statement that the university would furnish the prize money that had been denied by the promotion company, along with additional UMass gifts: “We appreciate Noah taking part in the series shootout promotion at our recent women’s basketball game and applaud his efforts. After the contest, we informed Noah we would share the footage with our insurance partner as the next step. After their review of the four camera angles we provided, they determined the half-court shot was disqualified as it was not taken behind the half-court line. We weren’t satisfied with that outcome and arrived at the decision to provide Noah with both a $10,000 award and a host of additional UMass athletics benefits.” (link)

SMU AD Rick Hart announces this will be his last academic year leading the Mustangs, though he will remain in his position until a new leader is identified and on campus. Hart: "It is with tremendous pride, heartfelt love, and yes, mixed emotions, that I share I have made the decision that this academic year will be my last at SMU. After the honor of leading the Department of Athletics for thirteen years, it is time for a new challenge for me and for a new voice to lead the Mustangs, allowing President-Elect Hartzell to move forward with his own vision and leader as SMU moves forward in this new landscape of collegiate athletics." Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports on The Collective Association’s trip to Capitol Hill & meetings with upwards of 40 lawmakers. Here’s the key takeaway: “The majority of congressional offices TCA spoke with appear uninterested in granting the NCAA its coveted antitrust exemption, regardless of their political affiliation.” Christovich gets this from an attendee in the meetings: “What’s radical [to lawmakers] is not that athletes are being paid. What’s radical is that the traditional members of college sports need an antitrust exemption. … That’s the biggest hang-up.” (link)

North Carolina System President Peter Hans, in a memo to North Carolina Board of Trustees Chair John Preyer and UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts, wrote that “instances continue to occur where members of the board appear to act independently of their campus’s administration in matters squarely within the responsibility of the chancellor.” Such actions, Hans continued, “create substantial legal risk to the University—jeopardizing the North Carolina taxpayers’ money by blurring the lines of actual and apparent authority when these athletic departments negotiate business transactions with third parties.” Hans said he was temporarily suspending parts of “the delegations of authority” that system policy gives to the Board of Trustees. Going forward, he or his designee must approve any hiring or salary adjustment related to athletic department employees other than administrative assistants. For Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham and head coaches whose contracts must be approved by trustees, Hans said his sign-off will be needed first, and trustees shouldn’t “play any role in negotiation of such actions.” UNC System Director of Media Relations Andy Wallace: “President Hans took this action as a matter of good governance. He will not reference specific individuals or incidents and hopes to restore the delegated authority in the near future.” (link)

UTSA AD Lisa Campos joins the Andy Everett Show to discuss several topics, including how Title IX might impact the implementation of the House settlement and explains: “What we know is there’s a lot of attorneys out there giving counsel about how this could be compliant with Title IX, whether it's using those percentages with the past settlement damages, using what revenue of those eight categories, what sports are generating revenue and doing it as a percentage by that. So, there's a lot of different interpretations out there and nothing consistent right now.” Campos also talks about the completion of new suites in the Alamodome: “The companies love being there. It’s a way to entertain your clients, entertain your employees. It’s a great opportunity to just come in and break bread with folks and then watch a really great football team right. And to your point we have multiple new suites available…and we anticipate being able to sell those as well.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake takes a look at what Washington State President-Elect Elizabeth Cantwell’s hire means for WSU athletics, particularly after the relationship between President Kirk Schulz and the WSU Board of Trustees has grown tense. One board member tells Canzano: “The guy has gone through a lot of sh-t. Let’s face it. He dealt with Covid, the Nick Rolovich fiasco, enrollment declines, and the Pac-12 imploding. Kirk has had to deal with that stuff, but we’re trying to help athletics. He was directed to find the money, and the guy stonewalled us.” Another board member says: “There’s been tension since August of 2023 when the Pac-12 broke up. We’ve got to do what’s best for the university, but I can not separate athletics from the challenges we have with enrollment. We need to enroll students and build the brand, and part of the brand is to invest in athletics.” Will things be different under Cantwell? One regent says: “She walked into the announcement wearing crimson sneakers.” Canzano is “encouraged by the Cantwell hire,” noting her background reminds him of that of Oregon State President Jayanthi Murthy. “The lawyers involved in the Pac-12’s initial fight for survival told me once that Murthy was the biggest driving force in refusing to accept several ‘lowball’ settlement offers from the 10 departing schools. Murthy was ticked off, wanted every dime, and was willing to go to the mattresses fighting for it.” (link)

Georgia’s total operating revenue set another school record at $241.8M for FY24, during which operating expenses came in at $194.3M. The revenue jumped $31.7M YoY, while expenses increased by $7.7M. The $47.5M operating surplus is up $24M. The school notes that if $46.3M in expenses for capital projects funded by contributions to the Magill Society were included as well as $4.5M contributed to the university, Georgia's surplus would be about $1.8M after accounting for $5.1M in investment income. UGA’s football recruiting expenses decreased by $1.18M in FY24 to $4.09M. According to the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, at least three other football programs topped the Bulldogs in recruiting expenses for FY24, including Tennessee at $5.38M, Alabama at $5.27M and Texas A&M at $4.13M. Also from Weiszer: “Georgia reported $101.4M in contributions, up from $75.9M in the previous fiscal year with women’s team contributions going from $6.6M to $30.7M — including $14.4M for softball and $11.5M for tennis. Georgia’s total revenue trails Texas ($331.9M), Texas A&M ($266.4M) and Ohio State ($254.9M) among schools whose fiscal year reports have been released publicly. Georgia is just ahead of Michigan ($238.9M).” (link)

Seton Hall has an NIL budget of about $1.5M for men’s basketball “while the top schools in the Big East have a budget closer to between $3M and $4M,” according to NJ Advance Media’s Adam Zagoria, who points out that St. John’s HC Rick Pitino last month remarked: “I’m hoping that revenue [sharing] comes in for Seton Hall and everybody basically gets the same, and then you’ll see Seton Hall just as good as every team in the league. Right now, they don’t have the revenue that most of the other teams have. Probably it’s the lowest in the league.” Asked about Pitino’s comments, Pirates HC Shaheen Holloway said: “I’m just playing the hand I was dealt. I can’t get into that. ... This is the hand I was dealt. I’m not going to complain, I’m not going to argue. I’m still going to coach, and keep coaching and keep trying to fight and fight and get better. What we have is what we have.” Without having to dedicate the lion’s share of revenue to football, Zagoria notes Seton Hall expects to spend 90% of its NIL money on men’s basketball and the remainder on women’s basketball. “So in that world, Seton Hall essentially would double its NIL budget and be able to pay players more money. … So for Seton Hall fans despairing over the current situation, there is hope.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter highlights two newly filed NIL bills. In Texas, a new bill would prohibit agreements that grant exclusive rights to an athlete’s NIL and the right to a percentage of earnings from use or sale of the athlete’s NIL up to a predetermined amount of earnings. Winter notes that some collective agreements are structured that way. A new bill in Colorado has three main components: It would allow schools and the NCAA to pay NIL compensation to athletes, remove language prohibiting athletes from entering into NIL deals that conflict with team contracts, and exempt athlete NIL agreements from public record requests. After racking up fines totaling $850K for court-storming events following men’s basketball wins over Tennessee and Kentucky, Vanderbilt has instituted a new policy. A one-minute countdown clock will appear on the video board after the conclusion of men's and women's basketball games at Memorial Gymnasium. “Once the countdown expires and the court is clear, students and fans are welcome to access the court for up to 30 minutes. Commodores HC Mark Byington: "I think our new storming policy is needed. And I think we get the best of both worlds if we're fortunate enough to win a big game or win a game that feels worthy of that, we want to celebrate with them, but at the same time the safety concerns. ... It's illegal, so it's illegal for a reason, and we don't want the fines, but it is a nice compromise to be able to celebrate with them." (link)

Domestic programming and production costs at ESPN were up 9% to $3.71B in the quarter ended Dec. 28, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, who notes the increase “reflected the additional outlay associated with the expanded [College Football Playoff] format and the first season of the network’s new SEC deal. And while higher rights fees impacted operating income (OI) in the near term—ESPN’s stateside OI fell 9% to $231M—the segment’s performance on the advertising and distribution fronts remained encouraging. ESPN’s domestic operations saw a $6M bump in affiliate revenue, as payments from operators added up to $2.35B on the quarter. Higher rates were effectively offset by subscriber declines; at last count, some 66M households subscribed to the flagship network, down 7% from the year-ago 71M and off 21% versus the 84M subs ESPN reached five years ago. Ad revenue grew 15% to $1.29B in the period, thanks in large part to higher rates negotiated for ESPN’s live sports coverage. All told, stateside revenue was up 9% to $4.42B.” Disney CEO Bob Iger explained during this week’s earnings call that “Venu basically looked redundant to us, and so this was a great opportunity for us to make ESPN available in multiple skinny bundles, and then to actually merge” the Hulu live-TV product with Fubo. “Frankly, while we like being in that business, it wasn’t a core business to Hulu.” Flagship remains on target to launch in the fall, and Iger says the new offering “is not really designed to preserve a business. It’s designed to grow a business in a market that’s evolving or changing right before our eyes.” (link, link)
