Former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be squarely in the spotlight during today’s Super Bowl & CBS’ Brandon Marcello writes on the deep relationship between Mahomes, the Red Raiders & the Kansas City Chiefs. Tech AD Kirby Hocutt looks back to Mahomes first approaching him about the potential of full brand alignment: “He wanted his alma mater with Adidas – and at the same time he had the vision for growth of his 'Gladiator' logo, his brand.” Even after the the synergy was rolled out, Texas Tech VP of Marketing & Communications Matt Dewey still thought there was more to unlock: “A lot of the content just kind of seemed to gloss over Texas Tech, so I reached out to them and said, 'Hey, what could we do to get his Texas Tech story to be part of his broader Kansas City Chiefs story?’” The result was a seven-year marketing agreement between the two that runs through 2027 & is worth $6.47M. Deliverables for Texas Tech inside Arrowhead Stadium include video board & ribbon board ads, as well as “Tech-branded content regularly appears on the Chiefs' social media and radio broadcasts as well.” Notably from Marcello: “Applicants to Texas Tech from the Kansas City area have ‘gone up significantly’ during the marketing agreement, Hocutt said. About 100 students from the Kansas City area have enrolled at Tech, Dewey said.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down how the ACC’s ESPN extension impacts the possibility of Memphis, Tulane and/or USF joining the Pac-12: “Four months later, the American schools are not off the table. But they would only leap into the Pac-12 if the financial math made sense. Here’s what we know and what we presume: The Pac-12 is seeking a media rights deal in excess of $10M per school annually, according to sources. Does that mean $18M, $15M or $12M? Our hunch is the target figure is closer to $12M. And we should also remind folks that it’s a negotiation. The target figure and the final number are often quite different. The rock-bottom number, in our view, is $7M per school annually. That would approximately double the Mountain West’s current payout and essentially equal the average distribution the American schools receive from their contract with ESPN. If you toss the target number and the rock-bottom number into a cauldron, the end result would be a media rights deal worth roughly $9M to $10M annually per school. … Put another way: Would an offer of $10M per year from the Pac-12 be enough to exceed what Memphis, Tulane and USF are receiving annually and cover the additional travel costs? (Also, Memphis really wants to join the Big 12 — whether it’s realistic or not — and the school won’t make any moves that could potentially complicate the strategy.).” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann goes deeper on Friday’s decision by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to deny Maryland-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall additional eligibility after playing four seasons at Stonehill. McCann: “Casper said she was ‘not convinced’ the NCAA incorrectly applied its own rules. The judge noted that the Skyhawks played 32 games in spring 2021 and Ciulla-Hall played in 21 of those games. Those benchmarks, Casper noted, meant that Ciulla-Hall played in a season that counts under NCAA rules. The judge also reasoned that Ciulla-Hall has not established a likelihood the NCAA and its member schools violated antitrust law by denying his eligibility. Casper noted that Ciulla-Hall hasn’t ‘pointed to evidence’ showing that denial of his eligibility reflects harm to the marketplace for college athletes. The judge also cited precedent standing for the proposition that judges reviewing NCAA rules should take caution before entering injunctions. Otherwise, she mentioned, judges run the risk of intruding on complex business arrangements. Casper also underscored that her denial of a preliminary injunction does not mean Ciulla-Hall will necessarily lose his case.” Ciulla-Hall’s attorney: “We are disappointed with the ruling. We believed Trey had a compelling case. However, the time constraints played a significant part on both sides.” (link)

Yesterday’s hoops ledger featured the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, but Toledo Men’s Basketball HC Todd Kowalczyk said pregame he would like to see the event moved to earlier in the season: “I just wish our league commissioner would stop trying to do this in February. It makes zero sense. And, in my opinion, it's a big mistake on his part to put our players and all the players in our league in harm's way. It's not right.” Ironically, after the Rockets won 72-69 over James Madison, Kowalczyk added: “That was March-level intensity. So much for a meaningless game.” The Toledo Blade’s David Briggs goes further on the MAC’s lackluster hoops year overall as it sits at 23rd out of 31 leagues according to the NET rankings. Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher chimes in: “We’re looking at a lot of different things. I'm not sure where we'll come out, but I know we'll have some pretty interesting conversations in the postseason as we look into this. The good thing is no one is satisfied.” (link)

James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis points to changes in National Institutes of Health funding that could have ripple effects for athletics. On Friday the NIH announced it was capping indirect grant costs at 15% against the historical industry average of 27-28%. From Forbes Michael Nietzel: “Universities depend on indirect cost reimbursement to defray a significant portion of these expenses, and a cut of this magnitude will leave many of them scrambling to fill the huge budget holes that it almost immediately creates.” Davis: “For those in D1 athletics, you now have more competing priorities for limited institutional support.” (link)

Tennessee introduces a new NIL bill that Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter writes is “very specific on things it allows/requires.” The bill highlights that schools & collectives can operate free media networks featuring student-athletes while paying them a percentage of revenue. They can have talent fees on athletics revenue that can be utilized for NIL compensation and establish NIL funds to attract and manage revenue from NIL activities, including alumni donations. They can create incentive based revenue-sharing models that allocate at least 50% of NIL generated funds to student-athletes and their representatives, and the bill also creates a licensing system for NIL representatives under which they have a fiduciary duty to athletes. Overall, Winter notes: “The bill would be good for collectives.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini provides the details on Ohio State Football HC Ryan Day’s buyout as part of his new contract with the Buckeyes. If fired without cause, the buyout would start at $80.5M, a remaining average of $11.5M per year, subject to offset from a new job. His buyout to leave would start at $6M through January 31, 2026, fall to $4M and then lower each subsequent year. (link)

Arkansas Deputy AD for Integrity and Student-Athlete Success Dan Trump tells Arkansas Business that with the Super Bowl coming up “we’ll be sending out a reminder to all of our student-athletes and staff about ‘Don’t bet on it,’ and those types of things. It’s a kind of a continual message that has been ramped up. [Gambling] is so prevalent.” Trump also says he’d like to see the state institute a ban on prop bets because “that’s where you see the majority of the online abuse. Are we going to get to a point where gambling on college athletics is against the law? No, the toothpaste is out of the tube. But can we ban the prop bets involving student-athletes? That’s something that’s been pursued at the NCAA level, because I think that’s where we see the biggest problems.” Arkansas State FAR David Kern worries about how the abuse can affect the student-athletes’ lives. “It creates anxiety, depression, gambling debt, other risky things. I know the impact of addiction on their life.” (link)

FootballScoop’s John Brice offers a glimpse inside the “Rat Pack Clinic,” which he describes as the “invitation-only, word-of-mouth…best kept secret and top off-the-books draw at any AFCA Convention.” The group is led by Troy HC Gerad Parker and includes coaches from all levels, including power conference ACs and FBS and FCS HCs. Parker tells Brice: “The ‘Why’ to do this is I have a lot of good friends that I love and want to help in this profession in any way that I can, and to pay tribute to Phil. Make sure you treat this profession the right way, because it will take care of you if you do that. But if you’re an asshole, you’re out. If you take care of it and treat it the right way, it will take care of you.” Parker is referencing former Charlotte AC Phil Ratliff, who passed away in 2015 and comes from Parker’s hometown of Louisa, Kentucky. This year’s iteration was standing room-only, and Brice notes the “evening usually features five or six speakers and always hits on all three phases of the game. There are some audibles this night, because taking care of the game, as Parker intones this crowd, doesn’t always mean a guarantee of job security. Simply put, some dudes miss the event because they’re interviewing for jobs.” More from Brice on the meeting’s football-specific ins, outs and what-have-yous, including Georgia Tech AC Geep Wade’s advice for how to use sandpaper. The Kansas City Chiefs are launching their own production company, Foolish Club Studios, which will “develop scripted and unscripted content for both shortform and longform platforms,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Weprin, who notes the Chiefs have “already experimented in the sector, as with last year’s Hallmark Channel film Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story; and with the online claymation short A Kingdom Christmas Story: Hail Merry.” Weprin notes the team already has one in-house production team (65 Toss Power Trap Production group) that is focused on football content, and Foolish Club will focus more on “entertainment fare that expands the boundaries of what the team is currently doing.” Chiefs Chair/CEO Clark Hunt: “Foolish Club Studios is a tribute to my father in so many ways. My father constantly pushed boundaries and inspired innovative thinking, and that is exactly the ethos we expect this new studio to embrace as we expand our ambitions in storytelling and continue to make the game more accessible to our fans.” (link)

With Rick Hart’s announcement yesterday, On3’s Billy Embody writes on what SMU needs in a new AD & points to three key attributes: 1) Power conference experience (“Much like new SMU president Jay Hartzell is well-versed in the landscape of making a major move, the university would like its athletic director to be of that caliber of a leader.”); 2) Exploring new sponsorship opportunities, evaluating current agreements (“There are new sponsorship areas to explore both with physical space in SMU facilities and the school’s media offerings. With a new athletic director, even SMU’s agreement with Learfield will get looked at. That is an area where if SMU opted to go in-house, sources are optimistic that the monetary growth from that move would pay dividends.”); and, 3) Bolster fundraising (“The leadership who nabbed Hartzell know this is an area that can be addressed by a new athletic director. Hartzell’s early goal is to get more donors in line, which the new athletic director also has to move quickly on.”). (link); Speculation is already centering on the potential of SMU to hire Texas AD Chris Del Conte given Jay Hartzell’s relocation from Austin to Dallas. Longhorns Wire’s Hayden Victoria: “Both SMU and Texas are known for their substantial name, image and likeness licensing money. It’s uncertain how much SMU is willing to invest in Del Conte or if there’s any interest.” (link); In addition to Del Conte, potential candidates per various media outlets include Tennessee’s Danny White, Arkansas’ Hunter Yurachek, Boise State’s Jeramiah Dickey, College of Charleston’s Matt Roberts, Florida’s Scott Stricklin, North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham, Texas Tech’s Kirby Hocutt & Arkansas State’s Jeff Purinton. Maryland-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall, who is suing the NCAA on the grounds of additional eligibility given years played at the DII level, similar to Wisconsin Football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean, sees his attempt got denied by a U.S. District Court Judge in Massachusetts. Tennessee State could run out of money by April or May, according to Interim President Dwayne Tucker, who laid out a five-year plan for financial sustainability, student enrollment, and recruitment that he said the university will present to the legislature at the end of the month. Regarding the $2.1B the Biden administration said the state of Tennessee owes TSU, Tucker said he does not believe the university should sue the state over the money, telling the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators: “I think the best way to go about that – and everybody’s got a point of view about it – but I think we should also be realistic about those opportunities and the $2.1B. Really there’s no accounts payable setup in the state of Tennessee to pay us $2.1B.” Furthermore, there is no guarantee that TSU would win the lawsuit, and Tucker explains: “In the middle of that, it just doesn’t make sense to walk into the same people you need money from to pay your bills and say ‘Okay now we’re going to sue you.’ I just don’t think that’s a realistic thing to do.” Obtaining the $540M that Representative Harold Love (D-Nashville) said the school has been underfunded by is more realistic, and Tucker notes: “Using the money that has already been identified that way, all we’re asking the state to do is not bail out Tennessee State, but to provide a bridge to our long-term sustainability over the next five years.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini had this to say about Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley’s future with the Sun Devils, ”[Making the NCAA Tournament] is an expectation, it’s not a goal. It’s kind of one of those minimum requirements that we want to have tournament teams certainly in basketball, but in all of our sports. It’s my responsibility to look throughout the organization and figure out what are the pieces that we need to tweak and adjust and add to in order to have that kind of success. We’re not in this for participation trophies, we’re in this to win championships. [Hurley] and I have that conversation off and on, what are the missing pieces? He’s our coach and we want to support him as we’re in the middle of the season. We talked yesterday and said, 'Hey, we just gotta exhale.' We gotta make basketball fun again. … And we gotta look hard at the reasons why we can’t be successful and look at those adjustments that need to be made, and there’s obviously a time and a place where we’re prepared to do that.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick “might seem like an unlikely recruiter. But he's leaning into an unmatched strength and delivering a clear pitch on the trail,” according to ESPN’s Eli Lederman, who catches up with several players and coaches to get a glimpse of UNC’s new recruiting approach. Tar Heels QB commit Au’Tori Newkirk puts it like this: "The focus with this new staff is on preparing everything for the next level. Everything is being run like it's the next level. The motto is that we're going to be the 33rd team in the NFL." Belichick’s first recruiting stop was to Tar Heels pledge Zavion Griffin-Haynes’ of Rolesville High School. During the 90 minutes in the office of Rolesville HC Ranier Rackley, Belichick “broke down Griffin-Haynes' film, offered the same pass-rush pointers he used to coach Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor with the New York Giants in the 1980s and detailed a multiyear plan for Griffin-Haynes' future at North Carolina.” Rackley: "He told Zavion straight up: You're going to college, but you're an NFL player. I see you as a first-rounder already based on who you are and what you bring to the table." Defensive tackle commit Nicco Maggio says the first contact he received was from GM Michael Lombardi. “My dad realized who he was after the call and said he used to watch him on TV for fantasy football advice. That made you realize how crazy all this is." (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos catches up with several Power 4 collective operators and personnel staffers who anonymously opened up about this year’s football recruiting cycle. A Big Ten collective operator: “The amount of times a recruit came back to the table to renegotiate or had a family member negotiate and agree to it, and all of a sudden they start comparing notes with teammates and want to hire an agent. And then they want to renegotiate. … I don’t think the numbers are gonna go back down.” A source from an SEC collective: “I’d say this class was harder than ever. At the 11th hour, you’re getting just massive offers for guys. We lost a couple of guys who were getting four times the number that we were offering from an SEC school. Especially with the House case money coming in this year.” The range for a high-end QB runs from $500K to $3.5M, and an ACC collective rep says: “There were a couple kids in last year’s class that signed at a number that was shockingly low to me. If you’re being real, the first year has to be $500K at minimum.” Offensive linemen, linebackers, receivers and cornerbacks have seen their value drastically increase, and the SEC source says of LBs: “A guy you could get for $100K last year, schools are paying $800K for this cycle. Wide receivers, too. I think how much the freshman group of wide receivers this last season got paid has something to do with it.” More. (link)

Massachusetts has awarded $10K to student Noah Lee, who made a layup, free throw, three-pointer and half-court shot during halftime of the women’s basketball game against St. Bonaventure earlier this week. The promotion company, Odds On Promotions, initially ruled that Lee’s foot was not behind the line on the half-court attempt and, per UMass’ agreement with Odds On, the university had to provide video from the four broadcast-angle cameras used for the game to the promotion company for review. UMass initially offered a consolation package including tickets to upcoming basketball games, gift cards to the Mullins Center concession stand and some UMass spirit wear, but by Friday morning, the athletic department released a statement that the university would furnish the prize money that had been denied by the promotion company, along with additional UMass gifts: “We appreciate Noah taking part in the series shootout promotion at our recent women’s basketball game and applaud his efforts. After the contest, we informed Noah we would share the footage with our insurance partner as the next step. After their review of the four camera angles we provided, they determined the half-court shot was disqualified as it was not taken behind the half-court line. We weren’t satisfied with that outcome and arrived at the decision to provide Noah with both a $10,000 award and a host of additional UMass athletics benefits.” (link)
