James Madison AD Matt Roan chats with Higher Ed Athletics’ Travis Smith, digs in further on ticket pricing & donation changes coming for the Dukes: “...the last thing that we ever want to do is either be or be perceived as greedy. JMU Athletics is special because of people, and that's our student athletes, that's our coaches, that's our staff, that's our administration, the incredible alignment that exists here. But that's the people who vote with their feet, who come out and support us, whether it's in Bridgeforth Stadium or the Atlantic Union Bank Center. So we want to make sure that they continue to do that and that they're able to continue to do that. While there are adjustments that have to be made for us to ensure or at least try to ensure that we have the same type of success, that success that we've been able to enjoy over the last several years or decade plus, we want to make sure that we're never forgetting who's got us to this point and that we're bringing them along with us. [...] We want to make sure that we were or are protecting and equipping the 18 programs that we have. We want to make sure that we have a broad based athletics department where we expect to win in everything that we offer, and we want to make sure that it's not just the competitive success. Again, it's the experience that we provide and it's the academic component of that as well. This notion of being broad-based requires a certain level of investment. I think for us, as we have kind of gone about our house plan, both our roster numbers to meet the limits and Title IX, and then as we look at our rev share plan, everything that we tried to do was kind of with a focus on being additive. We didn't want to sacrifice any one thing that we do particularly well or do for that matter, to do something else. And that caused us to analyze what we were doing, but just to make sure again, stop, start or change or do those sorts of things.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman reports on Big Ten finances, indicating 13 league members in total generated $2.84B during FY24 with a bottom side expense total of nearly $3B. “Of those athletic departments, half finished the 2024 fiscal year with a deficit, and four of those eight were at least $15 million in the hole.” Notable nuggets: “Of the 13 public universities collecting Big Ten funding during fiscal 2024, 11 secured around $50.8 million as part of the league’s media contract plus $11 million or so for other disbursals, including bowl revenue. [...] Twelve athletic departments have total debt exceeding $90 million, and six are north of $225 million, led by Illinois ($312.5 million) and Ohio State ($286.7 million). Michigan ($252.8 million), Penn State ($246.9 million), Washington ($244.4 million) and Iowa ($227.8 million) are next in line. [...] Football recruiting expenses have soared nearly 56 percent over a two-year period, with Big Ten schools combining to spend more than $30.1 million, up from $19.35 million in fiscal 2022. [...] Iowa continues to be the statistical outlier in this section, documenting $638,000 in football recruiting expenses. When asked for explanation, Iowa athletics chief financial officer Greg Davies said the school reports on-campus visits, coaches’ travel off-campus and gift-in-kind flights. Unlike other schools, Iowa shifts costs for recruiting software expenses into the “other” category, of which Iowa’s total ($3 million) is well beyond peer programs Wisconsin ($1.5 million) and Oregon ($900,000).” Lots more. Michigan State’s Board of Trustees has authorized an additional $15M for renovations to the Spartan Stadium office tower per Crain’s Detroit Business’ Sherri Welch. Aimed at consolidating the MSU advancement department’s operations into a smaller footprint, the alterations to the tower’s second and third floors would free up 8,300 sq-ft. for “other institutional needs.” During its meeting, the Board also provided authorization for a project to rebuild MSU’s outdoor tennis courts while improving spectator areas and adding a support building with restrooms, locker rooms and team spaces. Funding for the tennis project will be provided through a dedicated gift from alumna Joan Secchia. (link)

Sportico’s Brendan Coffey reports on the growing popularity boom surrounding college hockey as highlighted by a sold-out TD Garden for tonight’s Beanpot Tournament final between No. 1 Boston College and No. 8 Boston University. Excitement for the sport is so palpable at BC, in fact, that after scooping up their provided ticket allotment prior to the start of the event’s opening round, four-school doubleheader, left out students somehow managed to secure a link to buyout the student section of fellow Beanpot participant, Harvard. While that level of excitement may not be that surprising for fans of the five-time national champion Eagles, it showcases a growing trend on campuses nationwide. Per Coffey, “the nation’s 64 Division I men’s hockey teams are playing to 75% capacity crowds, up from 73% last season. [...] Even lower-level hockey is seeing an uptick. The nation’s 93 Division II and III men’s program schools have seen crowds rise to 32% capacity this season, up from 30.5% last year, according to USCHO.” Additionally, women’s attendance has risen three percentage points to 23% capacity across 44 DI programs, while playing at higher than 16% capacity among 78 lower division teams. Mississippi State operated at close to a $7M deficit in FY24, although the school noted that was planned as part of the repayment of a $23M COVID-19 loan from the SEC and is covered by MSU reserves per the Clarion Ledger’s Sam Sklar. Overall, the Bulldogs brought in a record $127.2M in revenue, approximately $12M higher than FY23, while totaling $134.2 in operating expenses ($13M higher YoY). Ticket sale earnings increased by a record $2M with football and men’s and women’s basketball all demonstrating growth, while “other sports,” including baseball and softball, suffered just over a $300K combined decline. Contributions also rose by more than $9.5M, while royalty revenue climbed almost $100K to a total of $7.76M. A $2M boost in coaching salaries, a nearly $4M rise in support staff/administration compensation and severance payments totaling $3.7M (triple from FY23) powered increased spending numbers throughout the department with costs for recruiting, travel equipment and debt services also going up. Of particular note: “Football raked in $43,770,075 in revenue and $35,559,188 in expenses in 2024, both higher than the previous year. It yielded an $8,210,887 profit, a $151,205 decrease from 2023.” (link)

Plaintiffs lawyers have filed paperwork in North Carolina women’s tennis player Reese Brantmeier’s challenge of the NCAA’s prize-money restrictions to extend her lawsuit to cover all collegiate tennis student-athletes who have competed since March 19, 2020. Per The Carolina Journal, Brantmeier’s class action suit “would also add any player ruled ineligible to play because of existing prize-money restrictions.” Brantmeier’s lawyers argued: “Under long-standing amateurism regulations, the NCAA prohibits Tennis Student-Athletes from accepting cash awards, bonuses, and other monetary prizes [...] awarded by third parties for their performance in non-NCAA competitions, such as the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. With limited exceptions, ‘the NCAA bylaws provide that a Student-Athlete forfeits eligibility and is barred from intercollegiate competition [...] if they accept Prize Money in connection with non-NCAA tennis competitions.’ Plaintiffs seek relief on behalf of themselves and proposed Damages and Injunctive Relief classes from the application and past effects of the NCAA’s Prize Money Rules, to compensate class members for past forfeited amounts and to allow them to retain Prize Money for their performances in non-NCAA competitions without losing their collegiate eligibility. [...] The NCAA’s arbitrary rules restrict the amount of Prize Money that Student-Athletes competing in Tennis may accept, causing anticompetitive harm to the markets for their labor and reducing their earning ability.” A previous injunction attempting to cover athletes in multiple college sports, as well as a request from Brantmeier to have her case cover all DI tennis players, were both rejected by judges in late 2024. Texas introduces a new NIL bill with the intention to “prohibit deals in which an athlete is paid money in exchange for the exclusive right to negotiate using the athlete's NIL and receive a percentage of the earnings from the athlete's NIL.” Per Heitner Legal founder Darren Heitner, the technique is sometimes utilized by “collectives and agents (through exclusive rep agreements with upfront ‘marketing advances’), while the bill could be intended to “protect athletes from unscrupulous individuals.” (link)

A bill has been introduced in Utah that would “permit schools to directly compensate athletes for their NIL,” according to SUNY Cortland sports law professor Daniel Greene. It would make contracts between schools and student-athletes a matter of public record and schools would also become subject to reporting requirements. (link); Full bill text. (link)

Forbes’ Kristi Dosh goes in-depth on Dr. Pepper’s increasing investment in NIL. Starting back in July 2021 following changes in NCAA rules, the brand has featured a new athlete each college football season as part of its “Fansville” series before expanding to partner with 12 players in 2024, among them Texas’ Quinn Ewers, Ohio State’s Will Howard and TreVeyon Henderson and Kansas’ Jalon Daniels. Different activations during the 2024 season included the aforementioned national episodic commercial series, featuring Ewers, working alongside both Ewers and Oklahoma QB Michael Hawkins Jr. on the “It’s a Pepper Thing” social media campaign around the two rivals’ annual Red River Showdown and joining forces with Howard on social items surrounding the CFP National Championship. Dr. Pepper spokesman: “These collaborations allow us to tap into each athlete’s regional influence and offer fans unique experiences with players that celebrate a mutual love for Dr Pepper.” The brand plans to continue expanding its NIL strategy beyond social and into more consumer and retail activities. Nebraska AD Troy Dannen sits down with KETV 7’s Andy Kendeigh as the pair discuss revenue sharing with student-athletes: “We know we have a $20M expense coming up next year. I think if you ask any of our coaches, the first dollar, the most important dollar that will be spent will be the revenue share dollar. It’s tomorrow’s scholarship. It’s recruitment and retention. It is, as good as the coaching staff is, none of us are better than the student-athletes on the field. So, making sure we have a way to resource that. Finding ways to cut or reallocate things within our budget to hit that priority. At the same time, how do we drive new revenue? We’ve made a commitment to not raise prices until at least upgrades to the stadium are down. So, certainly this isn’t a matter of ‘how do we go to the fans and say we’re going to gouge you for more?’ so we can transfer that to the student-athletes. Our fans have been, and this might sound pollyanna-ish, but our fans have been with us. We owe something back to them and as this evolves that is that we don’t immediately rent to them. Part of the stadium project is to create new revenue streams, but at least that becomes optional for fans and not just the ticket prices going up twenty percent.” Lots more. (link)

Southern Illinois boss Tim Leonard talks about the same challenges: “It’s basically an added expense that just hits your budget over night. I mean essentially it’s another mandate that you have to figure out. It’s essentially going to cost us a half million dollars a year and then you throw on whatever number on top of that you feel like you have to be competitive. So, it’s never ending with our business because a lot of these expenses are mandates with not a lot of lead up time. Doesn’t matter if you have the money or not, boom you have to do it. [...] We’re competitive in the Missouri Valley. I’m not concerned with anything other than winning the Valley. Once we become dominant in the Valley, then we can look beyond to see what we need to do further to advance in the NCAA postseason. But, right now we just need to get there. Doesn’t matter what sport, that’s what people determine as a success factor. That’s all I’m worried about. [...] We’re probably leaning toward opting in. I don’t see any advantage to opting out. If you opt in, you don’t have to do any of those things. We’re committed to remaining as competitive as we possibly can within the Missouri Valley Conference.” Leonard goes on to say the SIU athletics endowment is “not bad” & would like to spend money being raised right now on nearterm needs. Green & Spiegel Individual and Olympic Sports Practice Group Leader Ksenia Maiorova & Vertical Screen Senior Director & Associate General Counsel John Mazzeo submit an entry for AthleticDirectorU on how direct payments to student-athletes in the coming new model of college athletics creates a critical immigration problem. From the article: “The independent contractor approach not only fails to protect international student-athletes but also leaves universities vulnerable to liability under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations. Universities can be charged with ‘knowing hire’ violations even if the compensated athletes are not W-2 employees of the school, but are instead independent contractors reporting income on IRS Form 1099. This is because under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), ‘a person or other entity who uses a contract, subcontract, or exchange…to obtain the labor of an alien in the U.S. knowing that the alien is an unauthorized alien…with respect to performing such labor, shall be considered to have hired the alien for employment in the United States in violation of [IRCA’s hiring provision].’ Knowing hire violations expose institutions and its administrators to both civil and criminal liability.” Lots more. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner believes the NFL adding an 18th regular season game would cause even more conflict with the College Football Playoff schedule: “The NFL’s regular season wouldn’t end until the second Sunday (in January), with the wild card round (six games over three days) on the third weekend and the divisional round (four games over two days) on the fourth. In fact, if the NFL simply moved its current TV schedule back one week to accommodate the 18th game, the wild card matchup played on Monday night would start at the same time, and on the same network (ESPN), as the CFP championship game. It all suggests a revamped calendar in which the NFL sucks up all the media oxygen and CFP games are relegated to the nooks and crannies of the TV schedule that limit audience.” Wilner suggests three options for the CFP: 1) Work around the NFL, which could mean Tuesday night championship game; 2) Play the CFP title tilt the weekend before the Super Bowl (though that means lengthening the college seasons even more); or, 3) Move the title game up a week (“This is the best solution, by far, but it carries enormous complexities — specifically, it would require the sport to untether itself from the New Year’s games.”). South Carolina Football HC Shane Beamer believes the SEC should be viewed differently when it comes to selecting the College Football Playoff field: “The fact of the matter is we beat the ACC champion on their field this year and didn’t get in. And I understand why we didn’t get in and why Clemson did. I’m not sour about that, but I do believe this league is just different than others, and there has to be some consideration. … Look I’ve got great respect for other conferences. I’ve been to other conferences. I’ve been part of the ACC, I’ve been part of the Big 12. There’s no question that there’s good football everywhere. But when you just talk about the teams in this league and the teams you play week in and week out, it’s different. And you look at the NFL draft every single year, it’s 20 straight years that the SEC has led the nation in draft picks. People can say, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter.’ Well, yeah, it does. We’re playing the best players in the country.” Beamer goes on to remark that "I’ve been a part of other leagues where you go into a stadium and there are 20,000 people in the stands, and you’re in a Power Four conference. Not in this conference. Every road venue you go in, you’re playing in front of 70, 80, 90, 100,000 people every single Saturday.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown writes on Nebraska’s decision not to hold a spring football game, wonders if it’s that big of a deal: “Here’s a list of all the other schools that brought in over 50,000 fans last year: Zero. Only nine schools brought in at least 40,000…and since these are official school numbers, not scanned tickets, it’s safe to assume these are all almost assuredly overcounts. [...] There isn’t a true, nationwide fan-driven demand for in-person simulated games. There are 100+ markets that can draw 20,000+ fans to an actual college football game in the Fall, when fans expect those games to happen. In mid-April? Looks like there’s about twenty.” Brown points to a number of reasons to support the data, including programs not having enough healthy linemen, a challenge that is unlikely to get any easier with a potential decrease in roster sizes. ESPN’s Myron Medcalf explores how BYU is going all-in on men’s basketball. Among others, the Cougars have the financial backing of Focus Services CEO Paul Liljenquist, who proclaimed, “You’re not going to outbid us,” days after he and colleagues had committed almost eight figures to secure A.J. Dybantsa. When HC Kevin Young first got to Provo, he did a Power Point presentation to the Cougars’ wealthiest boosters, whose combined net worth exceeded $10B, per sources, and according to Medcalf: presented “everything he believed he could achieve at BYU if they promised to back him. That approach -- an organized, passionate address that made the boosters feel like they were part of the team and not just rich backers -- appealed to the business-savvy crew that left the meeting as believers.” Dybantsa on his choice of schools: “They have an NBA staff, all the way down to the dietician, strength coach, analytics guy. And my ultimate goal is to go to the NBA. Why not surround myself [with those resources] a year early?” Young: “After [Dybantsa] announced he was coming here, we were already getting some interesting calls and now it's like, between me and the rest of my staff, we're fielding some pretty interesting calls, whether that be potential games, potential [nonconference tournaments] that people want us to play in or from recruits from all over the world. And so it's kind of putting us in a spot where we're like, OK, hopefully that all has legs, and now we can be selective on who we bring in.” More. (link)

The ACC increasingly appears to have weathered the storm after two years of infighting only to be faced with a new, albeit less existential problem, according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, who observes: “Now it has to fix basketball. The league has undergone an incredible coaching brain drain over the last three years, losing institutions all over the place. … The presumption is that Jon Scheyer can make Final Fours and win national titles at Duke, perhaps as soon as this season, but he has to actually do it. Hubert Davis made a Final Four at North Carolina, but he’s also in danger of missing the NCAA tournament for the second time in three seasons. The product has cratered at Syracuse and Virginia. The staying power post-legend remains to be seen at both FSU and Miami, which are experiencing downturns this year. … Duke is the only ACC team assured of a high seed, with Clemson, Louisville and Pittsburgh all hurting their résumés with upset losses within the last week. There is little distinction between second place and 15th at the moment. But this figures to be a temporary problem in a league where basketball is too big to chronically fail. If football continues to upgrade itself – hello, Bill Belichick – the ACC is in solid position for the rest of the 2020s. Given the assaults upon its credibility over the previous 18 months – from the outside and within – that’s a successful survivor’s tale.” (link)

CBS Sports for the first time ever used an on-campus production site for a linear broadcast when Kansas State hosted Oklahoma State on January 29. CBS SVP for Remote Production Steve Karasik: “Once the ball tipped, if you were watching this game on CBS Sports Network, you would never know that students were part of this production and it was being done from a facility that we had never used before. Overall, I think it was a really successful debut. We plan to use the Kansas State facility in the future and will be looking at other facilities in the Big 12 to see if we can add to this and do more in upcoming seasons.” CBS’ Big 12 hoops games are broadcast via an ESPN sublicense, and Karasik explains that “we were excited about the addition of Big 12 basketball to our CBS Sports Network package because it’s a premiere conference with a lot of great teams and a lot of great venues. We were told that the Big 12 had started an initiative of doing in-house productions for various sports. We ended up looking at all the schools and identified Kansas State as the one with the best facilities that could do a game up to CBS Sports standards.” The Wildcats recently constructed a ~$7M production site and Karasik says two production staffers sent to check out the studio “reported that the facilities were really good and they thought we would be able to do a game there.” (link)
