Maryland (DI)-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall, who is suing the NCAA on the grounds of additional eligibility given years played at the DII level, similar to Wisconsin (DI) Football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean, sees his attempt got denied by a U.S. District Court Judge in Massachusetts. (link); Sportico’s Michael McCann goes deeper on Friday’s decision by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to deny Maryland-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall additional eligibility after playing four seasons at Stonehill. McCann: “Casper said she was ‘not convinced’ the NCAA incorrectly applied its own rules. The judge noted that the Skyhawks played 32 games in spring 2021 and Ciulla-Hall played in 21 of those games. Those benchmarks, Casper noted, meant that Ciulla-Hall played in a season that counts under NCAA rules. The judge also reasoned that Ciulla-Hall has not established a likelihood the NCAA and its member schools violated antitrust law by denying his eligibility. Casper noted that Ciulla-Hall hasn’t ‘pointed to evidence’ showing that denial of his eligibility reflects harm to the marketplace for college athletes. The judge also cited precedent standing for the proposition that judges reviewing NCAA rules should take caution before entering injunctions. Otherwise, she mentioned, judges run the risk of intruding on complex business arrangements. Casper also underscored that her denial of a preliminary injunction does not mean Ciulla-Hall will necessarily lose his case.” Ciulla-Hall’s attorney: “We are disappointed with the ruling. We believed Trey had a compelling case. However, the time constraints played a significant part on both sides.” (link)

Wayne State (MI) Deputy AD Candice Turner and Tuskegee Deputy Chief AD Deborah Rodgers sit down with D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2024 Women Leaders in Sports Convention to discuss developing relationships with mentors, setting career goals, evaluating career opportunities and more. With both having the goal of becoming an AD, they’ve each taken different steps to work towards that goal, while both have gone through leadership development programs like NCAA Pathways. On evaluating a mentor, Rodgers prioritizes fit, relatability, and someone who helps her feel vulnerable, have uncomfortable conversations and share different experiences than she has, having spent her career at an HBCU. For Turner, she focuses on a group of individuals with whom she has organic chemistry. When evaluating career decisions, Rodgers: “Early on in my career, I had these timelines set. Oh, by this time I wanted to be this; by this age I wanted to be this; I want to only stay here for a few years. What I learned throughout that is lead from the seat that you're in, complete the work, finish it where you are, make an impact, leave an impact and then prepare yourself.” The duo also details their criteria for evaluating if an opportunity fits for them. Rodgers’ priorities include an alignment of core values and an alignment of the vision and goals for the institution with those of the athletic department. Turner: “For me, it's the location of the institution. I like urban research institutions because I feel like there's a lot of opportunity outside of the institution to implement some change and have an impact. Service is a core value of mine. Understanding the demographics of the university – the world has a breadth of people and I feel like that's a part of the educational process is being able to experience that. Institution type, so obviously the research piece is very big for me. It's just really about how that institution is positioned wherever they're at, so if it's in Chicago or if it's in LA or whatever it is, I think those things have to align with my vision of being in an urban area.” Tons more insights only on BOSCA. Fort Hays State AD Curtis Hammeke has asked the Student Government Association to increase the athletic student fee to $11.97 in an effort to cover transportation cost increases. Hammeke: “We buy our own buses, we hire our own drivers, we maintain all of our vehicles. […] Our plea is for more support from student fees, and we realize we’re trying to keep our cost down and affordable for our students. [I’m] totally on board with that, our tuition and our fees. However, we have to be mindful of that at all times. We also have to be cognizant moving forward of quality.” The fee change will be voted on next week. (link)
