Hoopsville’s Dave McHugh sits down with Baruch Men’s Basketball HC/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair John Alesi and OAC Commissioner/Women’s Basketball Committee Chair Bethany Dannelly to discuss NPI, bracketing and lots more. On bracketing to protect the top eight seeds, geography and other factors will influence where teams are placed as the committees work to ensure those teams do not see each other until the second weekend at the earliest. Dannelly on building the bracket: “We're really going to be doing everything that we can to create a bracket that is competitive, that holds to the rankings, that allows teams to host who are some of the top teams, and that if we reach a point where those top seeds advance, they have the opportunity to host sectionals. That's going to be the intention, but there's a whole lot of factors at play here, particularly now that we have hard and fast rankings that are going to make that a really complicated process.” Alesi adds: “If we're not being bogged down with so much time spent on selections, as we've been in the past, it might be something that we have the ability to be a bit more proactive in looking at where these conflicts may arise and building a bracket that will work geographically, as best as we can make it work, while maintaining integrity of seeding as best as we can. […] I would encourage teams to put in a bid to host because the more teams that put in the bid to host, we have more flexibility, more opportunities.” Dannelly believes scheduling, for the top teams, will remain the same as they look to gain wins against top teams to boost their NPI. On the other hand, the strategy for those on the bubble could change, as she notes: “Now, winning games matters. So if you're trying to get into the tournament, you're in 30-50ish range for the basketballs, you have to be winning games because if you're losing games on the men's side, they have the 25-75 ratio, when you're calculating that NPI score, you lose a game that's 25 points you're not getting. On the women's side, we have the 20-80 ratio; that's 20 points in your score for that game you're not getting. That matters as you're looking at what your average is, so winning those games when you're a bubble team is essential.” Lastly of note, per Dannelly, the NPI dials will be in place for three years, not two, with a discussion to occur after the 2025-26 season and changes to go into effect after 2026-27. Maryland (DI)-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall, who is suing the NCAA on the grounds of additional eligibility given years played at the DII level, similar to Wisconsin (DI) Football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean, sees his attempt got denied by a U.S. District Court Judge in Massachusetts. (link); Sportico’s Michael McCann goes deeper on Friday’s decision by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to deny Maryland-hopeful Baseball student-athlete Trey Ciulla-Hall additional eligibility after playing four seasons at Stonehill (DII). McCann: “Casper said she was ‘not convinced’ the NCAA incorrectly applied its own rules. The judge noted that the Skyhawks played 32 games in spring 2021 and Ciulla-Hall played in 21 of those games. Those benchmarks, Casper noted, meant that Ciulla-Hall played in a season that counts under NCAA rules. The judge also reasoned that Ciulla-Hall has not established a likelihood the NCAA and its member schools violated antitrust law by denying his eligibility. Casper noted that Ciulla-Hall hasn’t ‘pointed to evidence’ showing that denial of his eligibility reflects harm to the marketplace for college athletes. The judge also cited precedent standing for the proposition that judges reviewing NCAA rules should take caution before entering injunctions. Otherwise, she mentioned, judges run the risk of intruding on complex business arrangements. Casper also underscored that her denial of a preliminary injunction does not mean Ciulla-Hall will necessarily lose his case.” Ciulla-Hall’s attorney: “We are disappointed with the ruling. We believed Trey had a compelling case. However, the time constraints played a significant part on both sides.” (link)

The NFL is exploring options to create professional men’s and women’s flag football leagues and has received a “tremendous amount of interest” from investors, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell, who says: “That'll be a big part of the Olympics in a few years. But it's also something that we want to look at all levels, the youth level all the way up, and we're exploring very aggressively now an opportunity to create a professional-type league for both men and women.” A source tells SBJ’s Ben Fischer the interest from investors includes entities not involved with the NFL. Additionally, the extent to which the NFL would be involved has yet to be determined, as Fischer explains the league could be the “league organizer” or “more of a collaborator.” Goodell: “This is something that we've been working on for several months, and there’s a tremendous amount of interest from players, from investors, to people who recognize, particularly, that women's sports are in a place where it's real and it’s something we all want to be part of.” (link)
