SBJ’s Ben Portnoy talks to a number of stakeholders around the industry to get a sense of if the College Football Playoff’s expanding footprint is impacting Men’s Basketball. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt: “[That] is undoubtedly true at some level. But in real, practical terms, I don’t know that from a viewership and attendance standpoint, it had as dramatic an impact as I thought it may.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips offers an additional perspective: “People talk about ‘March Madness’ quite a bit, which is still the greatest tournament that there is in sports. That can’t be the [only] focal point. There has to be a meaningful and a visible regular season that draws the interest of fans when there’s direct competition in the marketplace, specifically football.” Color UConn AD David Benedict a bit skeptical: “Look, I don’t think because the College Football Playoff is going longer that people are deciding, ‘Hey, I’m not going to watch basketball on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, because there’s a football game on Monday.’ If you like college basketball and there’s good content on, then I think you’re going to watch it.” Tennessee AD Danny White provides another voice: “We’re playing 15 games before you hit January — that’s half the season. And then, at the same token, we’re playing a boatload of baseball and softball games before basketball season is over and before the sun comes out most places in the country. I just think there’s a smarter way to do it. We should probably stop competing with ourselves in terms of the overlap of sports and try to have greater emphasis and a better platform and spotlight for each sport to stand alone, and let our fans and everyone celebrate it and focus on it more.” Lots more. Florida State AD Michael Alford, along with Miami (FL) peer Dan Radakovich, sat down with ESPN’s Andrea Adelson & David Hale from the ACC Winter Meetings as the pair discussed revenue sharing & the future of college athletics. Alford on how his job has changed as a result of the House settlement & other notable developments over the past two years: “100% it’s changed, but it’s changing for the better. The House settlement continues to look like it’s going to end in April, which puts everything on a level playing field. But then looking at your budget and everything it’s going to impact, the redistribution of those dollars, and planning for it has changed (the job) a little bit. I go back to my 10 years in the NFL of how we evaluated Fair Market Value and how we evaluated that and now how that’s going to come into play. So it’s pretty similar, just with a collegiate twist on it. [...] We’ve known it’s coming, so we’ve been preparing about how we’re going to adjust our business practices.” Radakovich: “It’s also changed day-to-day how we work because we grew up in a very different collegiate athletics business than what we have today. Today, it is more about how we are getting the resources that we need to fund a new $20M expense. Michael being at a public institution, Miami being a private institution, we go about it in different ways, but at the end of the day it’s still a resource that needs to come forward from somewhere. Both institutions see the value of athletics to the university brands, alumni bases and realistically for the State of Florida, because us along with the University of Florida, we’re the biggest brands in the state. Protecting that and making sure we continue to move forward as an athletic program and as a good part of the institution, that takes up a lot of the day.” Alford goes on to say he’s most worried about not losing “winning edge resources” for sports other than Football to ensure a premium student-athlete experience and continued championship opportunities. Oregon State AD Scott Barnes says he can foresee hiring a General Manager in the future to lead revenue-share decisions for Football, but for now it’s a process fully up to Beavers HC Trent Bray. Barnes: “The growth of our NIL program will eventually dictate hiring an executive-level position that will oversee all of it.” Barnes also indicates a decision on whether or not to hold a spring game is also Bray’s call. (link)

Per James Moore & Co. partner Katie Davis, the Department of Education’s memo regarding Title IX’s impacts on NIL has been removed from its website. (link); Meanwhile, the Department of Education is “urging” the NCAA “to restore to female athletes the records, titles, awards, and recognitions misappropriated by biological males competing in female categories.” (link)

Until the full Big 12 revenue share kicks in, the Houston athletic department will receive a loan from a university endowment to address its $9-10 million shortfall. As the Cougars work to double their annual budget, Chancellor Renu Khator says: “I think athletics should have the same resources that I see other teams in my league in the Big 12 because if we don't have resources, how are we going to have the tools they need to be successful? If we all want to win, then we've got to give them tools.” (link)

ESPN’s Max Olson digs into Texas Tech Football’s haul from the transfer portal as billionaire booster Cody Campbell, who doubles as the Founder of The Matador Collective, was prepared to invest upwards of $5M into new additions & wound up spending double that with 17 new transfer student-athletes. Campbell points back to preparation that started back in the summer: “A few people caught on later, but nobody was ahead of the curve like we were in terms of planning for it. [...] We are going to have the most talented roster in the conference, and I don't think it's going to even be close. We have never, ever been in that position.” Interesting nugget from Red Raiders GM James Blanchard: “You might watch tape and be like, 'The NFL likes this guy? I don't really like him.' Listen, they got way more information than we do. So, take the ego out of it. If the NFL is saying this guy is a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick ... let's lean towards the guys who do this all the time and let's have an advantage.” Also: “Campbell declined to disclose contract terms, but sources told ESPN that all three (new student-athletes) signed deals exceeding $1 million for 2025.” (link)

More NIL Today…
+ According to Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, a newly introduced Utah NIL bill would permit schools, “institutional marketing associates” and other third parties to compensate student-athletes without fear of NCAA penalties, while also outlining that student-athletes aren’t employees because of direct payments and making contracts between schools & athletes public records. Winter notes a number of conflicts he sees between the bill and the proposed House settlement, including no mention of a cap on school payments and that “it would appear to allow collectives to pay athletes without fear of the NCAA/new enforcement entity enforcing the House settlement’s restrictions on collectives.” (link); Complete bill text. (link)
+ A bill introduced in Arizona would prohibit conference and athletic associations from stopping schools from compensating student-athletes for utilizing their NIL per SUNY Cortland sports law professor Daniel Greene. Additionally, receiving NIL compensation wouldn’t affect student-athlete employment status or classify them as employees. (link); Full bill. (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel continues to say there are no plans to integrate permanent advertising into Michigan Stadium despite industry pressures for additional revenues: “We have no plans to put advertising in Michigan Stadium right now. None. [...] How much it would bring into Michigan, I don't know. But if you look around at other institutions, Ohio State, you look at Texas, you look at other places that have advertising like that in significant numbers. In the place where we're adding revenue share of $20 million, we've decided not to reduce any sports, we're not cutting back on any scholarships for any sports. We're actually adding some scholarships to some sports. We have to find a way, so we're looking at ways to cut expenses and increase revenue.” How will the Wolverines allocate revenue share per sport? “We're working through finalization of what we're going to do, but it's probably going to be close to the distribution model that's in the settlement.” As for if the NCAA has treated Michigan fairly in the recent football investigation: “I've gotten to know (NCAA president) Charlie Baker. I think he's a good person. I know many of the enforcement staff, and I think they're good people. I wouldn't say it's that way, but I would say I understand why people could perceive it a certain way, but I don't. I wouldn't say they're out for Michigan, but it's just one of these things where you hope there's balance, put it that way.” (link)

New South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati in a letter to Gamecocks fans: “...the realities of the House case have vast financial implications for not only our athletics department and university but for college athletics as a whole. These additional costs were not budgeted and come at a time with already existing financial pressures across our sports. In short, being resourceful with our dollars will be as important as ever to continue to be successful and nationally competitive. Identifying new and additional revenue streams will also be key to continued success and finding our path to fly higher than ever before. I assure you we are putting in the work to plan for the future and ensure we are doing so in a sustainable way.” (link)

Oregon State will add a $3 “Student-Athlete Enrichment Fee” to every football, hoops & baseball ticket & parking passes during the 2025 seasons to supplement dollars needed for the coming revenue share environment. Here’s the math from The Oregonian’s Nick Daschel: “If Oregon State sells an average of 28,000 tickets per game next season, plus parking passes – students are allotted approximately 6,000 tickets in 35,548-seat Reser Stadium – it could generate approximately $600,000 in additional revenue. [...] With basketball and baseball games attracting a combined 250,000-300,000 fans, and other sports, that could raise more than $1 million, counting football.” Beavers AD Scott Barnes stops short of saying exactly how much his department will be sharing, though it won’t be at the full $20.5M, “There will be more schools that don’t reach that than do. We will be competitive and relevant against those schools that we’ve always recruited against. That’s our goal.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates Founder & Chairman Todd Turner sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at last month’s NCAA Convention in Nashville to discuss leading through all the current industry challenges. Turner: “I think the thing that I would like leaders in college in this space to think about is what is the mission of our institution? What do we value the most? What can we afford to do and be the best of what we are and be content with that. Because if you chase something that you really can't achieve because of resources more than anything else, you're going to have a hard time surviving. It could irreparably harm an institution and athletics should be an asset and not something that draws you down. So I would hope that people really look at themselves in the mirror that are making these decisions and say, ‘Who are we? And are we really an institution that wants to pay our student athletes or has the ability to pay our student athletes $20.5 million or are we different?’ And if we are different, let's figure out how to make it so that we can be good at it. [...] I think our approach is, look, we bring decades of real actual experience in college athletics to the table. And oftentimes we see things that you're either afraid to look at yourself or you don't know. It could be data that we can help mine for an institution that they could probably do it on their own, but would take a lot of time. They're not expert at it. I think those are the things that consulting companies can offer is insight, experience, data. And the other thing is we don't make the decisions. Our approach would be, here are some issues that we see for you, and here are some possible strategies you could take to deal with those. But it's your decision.” Lots more. (link)

Key Lime Air, the private jet chartering company whose plane made a runway incursion while holding members of the Gonzaga men’s basketball team on Dec. 27, has concluded its internal investigation into the incident. Following its internal review, Key Lime has “identified areas for procedural enhancements to strengthen pilot training, communication and situational awareness in complex airport environments.” The report also states: “The event highlighted the need for enhanced briefing protocols when runway assignments change and additional focus on navigation procedures during high-workload phases of flight.” A Federal Aviation Administration probe remains ongoing. Auburn Defensive Coordinator DJ Durkin signed a new contract Feb. 5 that adds a year to his initial deal, which had him on the Plains from 2024 to 2026. It also boosts his base salary from $1.2M during the 2024 season to $2.5M for 2025. Should Durkin's contract be terminated without cause, he'll be owed the remainder of his yet-to-be-paid salary, which will be issued in equal monthly installments for the remainder of the term. If Durkin terminates his own contract before Dec. 20, 2025, he'd owe Auburn $1M. That amount drops to $250K if he departs between Dec. 20, 2025 and Dec. 20, 2026 and $125K thereafter. (link)

Fox San Antonio’s Yami Virgin reports on potential immigration fraud related to matriculation of Australian football student-athletes to U.S. campuses. A number of individuals in the football community point the finger at recruiting firm Prokick, including allegations of doctored transcripts and misrepresentation of remaining years of eligibility. FoxSA partnered on its investigation with private investigative firm IFW International, whose chairman, Ken Gamble, suggests that U.S. universities “should be getting the student to sign a disclosure document, allowing them to seek the information. They should sign a letter of authority, allowing the university here to obtain over there any historical educational records from universities in Australia.” (link)

The Tennessean’s Aria Gerson investigates how the Diego Pavia court decision could impact college baseball: “Most people agree that if Pavia’s ruling becomes permanent, the juco route will become more attractive to high school players, though it’s not yet known to what extent. While extra DI eligibility would make juco more attractive, the DI route, especially in the SEC and ACC, has also come with additional perks. NIL gives players the chance to make money before getting drafted, and some schools give baseball players NIL deals even if they don’t see meaningful playing time. Along with the roster limits comes the potential that some teams could offer all rostered players full scholarships. [...] Another potential impact is top schools using junior colleges as ‘feeder schools’ of sorts. In this instance, teams could take incoming freshmen not likely to make the roster and tell them to go play at a junior college, with the potential of coming back and earning a roster spot at that same school after 1-2 years of experience and still four years of eligibility.” Walters State (NJCAA) Baseball HC David Shelton: “I feel bad for parents. I’m a college baseball coach and I’m sitting here not even 100% sure what’s the best way to advise my own son… I spent a lot of time talking to four-year schools and talking to their coaches and they’re just as up in the air about things as I am, like what’s going to happen? Where is it going to lead? What are the rules going to be six months from now?” (link)

ESPN VP/Women’s Sports Programming and espnW Susie Piotrkowski chats with SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane on key developments for her segment of the Worldwide Leader: “As we wind down on football season, we’re in women’s sports season, baby.” Piotrkowski also notes the importance of the integration of ESPN+ with the new Disney+: “The tile is a huge opportunity to reach fans in a new place. We’re seeing female audience engagement more robust than it has ever been. In a not-too-distant past, it was really tough. There was a high barrier to entry to be a women’s sports fan, and you’re seeing that barrier to entry get lower and lower and lower, and that’s a great opportunity for us.” (link, link)
