Speaking during today’s LEAD1 annual spring meeting, NCAA President Baker explained he hasn’t spoken with many student-athletes who want to be employees, “and there are a lot of really good reasons for that. Obviously, there’s a lot of traffic in the courts at this point about this issue these days, which is going to limit what I would choose to say about it. But I think student-athletes want to be student-athletes, and it’s up to us to figure out how to make that work for them in a variety of environments and in circumstances that are different.” Baker also addressed recent state laws aimed at curtailing the NCAA’s ability to enforce NIL activities, saying: “That does make, in some respects, the idea of creating additional framework through federal legislation stronger than it would be otherwise. Because we have evidence it’s going to be hard to do this on a voluntary basis.” Additionally, Baker commented on collectives being affiliated with athletic departments, pointing out that depending on the definition of “affiliated,” it’s likely those collectives would have to spend an equal amount on men and women to be compliant with Title IX. “So I view all of those as legitimate issues that would have to be dealt with (by Congress) … I think at a minimum, and this came up in the survey work that (athletic directors) did, might have been one of the highest scores of all, which was that there does need to be a framework or regulatory model around collectives to begin with.” (link)

Pending start-up funding of $1.2M being in place by June 1, FB will indeed return to Roanoke for the first time since 1942 following approval from the Board of Trustees. President Shushok: “Over the academic year, I have had many individual conversations with students, faculty and staff about the potential addition of a football team and associated programs. Cultivating a successful football program, along with a marching band and competitive cheer, can breathe life into a college campus, bringing together our faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community in a unified spirit of passion and pride.” (link)

+ Stevenson AD Adams sits down with PressBox Sports’ Charles about the university’s 117-acre East Campus, which was dedicated earlier this month. The complex includes an outdoor track & field complex, field hockey turf, fields for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and more. Further, the track is a state-of-the-art Beynon surface and the two soccer fields are made of Bermuda grass, allowing Stevenson to be a part of the FIFA World Cup bid. Even with construction continuing at the East Campus, Adams sees a new hockey rink for the Mustangs’ two NCAA hockey and two ACHA teams as a possibility in the future. More. (link)

The Dallas Morning News’ Jankowski and Rodrigues examine whether the Texas Senate’s bill to curtail universities’ DEI efforts will impact recruiting, and Arizona State (DI) professor/sports historian Jackson says if nothing else, it opens up those universities to negative recruiting. “If I want to increase my chances, I might mention that there’s been this effort in the Texas Legislature to tear down these programs that are intended to serve you.” Houston (DI) professor Hawkins, who specializes in race in athletics, adds: “You have to think as a parent, would you want your son or daughter to compete in a state that’s trying to take the state back 200 or 300 years instead of progressively moving it toward the 21st century?” (link)
