The Hartford Courant’s Dom Amore chats with leaders at Hartford as they are establishing their way as a DIII program, following a tumultuous transition from DI. AD Alicia Queally: “When I arrived, I knew what I was walking into in a sense. I knew the emotions that went through that process. I’m one for a challenge, I’m one for opportunity, and trying to be a transformational leader. I knew going through the interview process, each time I spoke with someone new about the change they were seeking here, I knew I was up for that challenge. There was a sense of needing direction, needing someone to remind them we could be great. There are feelings that are hurt, and that’s OK, but it’s not for us to fix, it’s for us to move forward.” President Lawrence Ward on his vision for athletics: “I see our athletic program principally as a form of engagement. A way to engage our student body, and we’re frankly suffering from that at the University of Hartford, not at the same level of engagement that I think is possible. As a community building tool, a chance to come together, as we saw during the run in women’s soccer, a chance to celebrate capital U, capital H, that’s an important part of our management model, building to stretch our footprint. I see athletics as a form of engaging with the greater Hartford community. […] I look at enrollment as the recruitment of students and the retention of students. So I think we’re through that recovery phase and going up. So enrollment is good, but you’ve still got to have two hands on the wheel. That’s where I think athletics are important. In Division I we had, at a height, 340 athletes, we have about 420. So we have quality student athletes, student athletes who want to be here and can afford to share more of the costs, which is not a bad thing.” More. (link)

The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics is recommending all divisions sponsor legislation to add Women’s Flag Football as an emerging sport, as “At least 65 NCAA schools are sponsoring women's flag football at either the club or varsity levels this year, with more slated to join in 2026.” Charlotte (DI) Executive Assoc. AD/Committee on Women’s Athletics Ragean Hill: “The growth of flag football will be exciting to watch in the NCAA as women's sports continue to generate more visibility and opportunities for female student-athletes to excel academically and athletically. The Committee on Women's Athletics wants to thank RCX Sports Foundation and USA Football for submitting the application. CWA looks forward to flag football being added to the Emerging Sports for Women program and watching the sport's exciting journey to NCAA championship status in the future.” (link)

Sport Sponsorship:

+ Penn State Harrisburg will add two new varsity sports: Men’s Lacrosse starting in spring 2027 and Women’s Flag Football transitioning from club to varsity starting next spring. AD Rahsaan Carlton: “We've had consistent interest in men's lacrosse in recent years from students and we're thrilled to turn that excitement into reality. The overwhelming response from our current students regarding women's flag football made it clear that we need to initiate this as a varsity sport offering sooner than later. With support from the NFL, Olympic Games and schools across the country, it is a burgeoning sport whose popularity continues to grow. We are incredibly excited to add these programs as future varsity offerings.” Both programs will practice and compete at the multipurpose turf facility, which is set to add bleachers, a press box, concessions and more this spring. + Ripon will add Women’s Flag Football starting in spring 2027. The Red Hawks plan to hire a coach this spring or summer. AD Chris Schumacher: “This is an opportunity to elevate women’s sports in a visible and meaningful way. Bringing competition to Hopp Stadium in the spring will give our campus and community another chance to rally behind our student-athletes.” (link)

+ SUNY Brockport will transition its club Women’s Flag Football program to varsity beginning next academic year. The Golden Eagles’ program currently has 42 members and the move comes as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association expects more than 200 teams next spring. AD Erick Hart: “This is an exciting opportunity to provide more female student-athletes with a chance to compete at a high level while growing a sport that continues to gain momentum nationwide. We look forward to building a championship-caliber program that will make an immediate impact.” (link)

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has rescinded the Biden administration’s guidance on NIL compensation. Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor calls the guidance “overly burdensome, profoundly unfair, and it goes well beyond what agency guidance is intended to achieve. Without a credible legal justification, the Biden Administration claimed that NIL agreements between schools and student athletes are akin to financial aid and must, therefore, be proportionately distributed between male and female athletes under Title IX. Enacted over 50 years ago, Title IX says nothing about how revenue-generating athletics programs should allocate compensation among student athletes. The claim that Title IX forces schools and colleges to distribute student-athlete revenues proportionately based on gender equity considerations is sweeping and would require clear legal authority to support it. That does not exist. Accordingly, the Biden NIL guidance is rescinded.” (link); Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) responds: “College sports may change, but schools' legal obligations under Title IX doesn't. If Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress won't defend women's sports, the courts will have to.” (link); Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also weighs in: “Government intervention and mandates kill opportunities for athletes, especially in women's and Olympic sports. I am glad President Trump and his administration have righted this wrong.” (link)
