BYU yesterday held a retirement press conference for AD Tom Holmoe where he expressed confidence that President Shane Reese is ready to find the Cougars’ next AD and noted: “One of the things that is super encouraging for me is the day that I came to President [Reese] and we talked this out, he did ask me if I wanted to stay, but he knew that I had made my decision. I think it’s important to note that, soon after, I knew…that he had already turned the page and he was ready to go, and that made me feel so good. He can’t wallow in what was. We’re looking ahead right now. This is a really good time to make a transition. Transitions are part of sport. Change is part of sport, and it’s oftentimes very good. It can be tough, but it’s good. … We’re going to turn the page. The baton will be handed to a new AD and we’ll hit the ground running. That’s what I wanted. That’s what the president wanted, and I think that’s what all of Cougar Nation wants.” Holmoe also explained that he made the decision to retire in July. “The last couple of years I’ve had to seriously contemplate, and my wife and I made the decision for a couple of years that, ‘Let’s go one more. Let’s go one more. Let’s go another.’ Sometime this summer, I’m not sure about the exact date, I just had a really strong impression that it was time. I talked to some people through long years, and they would say, you’ll know when the time is right. And it was in July.” (link, link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher is told by one Pac-12 AD that the league doesn’t have “expansion targets” but rather “many possibilities” when it comes to filling out its membership, and Canzano explains: “The semantics dovetail with what I’ve previously reported about the Pac-12’s media negotiations. The Pac-12 was recently given an update by Octagon. The consulting firm shared that feedback from potential TV partners framed the possible additions (i.e., UNLV, Memphis, Texas State, Nevada, Tulane, Air Force, etc.) as interchangeable in the eyes of media companies.” While the order of operations as of now appears to be securing a new media deal then adding at least one more football member, Canzano notes Saint Mary’s is “tuned into what happens after the Pac-12 gets done shopping for football schools. There’s been speculation that the league might want to add additional basketball schools, and the Gaels — up to No. 19 in the NET ranking this week — make too much sense competitively and geographically to ignore. … Nothing is imminent. Again, football is currently the focus, but a source told me on Wednesday that Saint Mary’s has reached out to Commissioner Teresa Gould. The Gaels are treading lightly and tactfully, per the source, leaving room for communication after the league gets the media rights and football decisions done.” Canzano also reports the Gaels have been working with donors to expand University Credit Union Pavilion from 3,500 seats to 5K. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joins NBC4’s Whitney Harding to discuss several topics, including how the Buckeyes are not only maintaining all 36 sports, but will add 90 scholarships if/when the House settlement is approved. “A lot of people called and said, ‘How’d you do that?’ And what we said was we had to recalibrate expenses. So, we had to lessen our expenses and we had to generate more revenue. … Our donors have stepped up, our season ticket holders are going to continue to step up, we've added some new pricing structures in Ohio Stadium around football. People are gravitating towards those, but we also added seats that don't require a donation and have less of a ticket price. So, we're trying to accommodate everyone at the same time saying we have to drive more revenue to pay for all of this.” To generate more revenue and avoid pricing out fans, Bjork says OSU is looking at ways to make concessions more accessible to increase volume, provide more social spaces for fans to gather and continue looking at alternative events like concerts and the NHL Stadium Series. People always ask me about turning the Horseshoe into natural grass. Well, we can't really do that because we need the artificial surface to be able to host these kinds of events, which people like coming to. So those are the kinds of things that will continue to lean into.” Full interview. (link)

The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics is recommending all divisions sponsor legislation to add Women’s Flag Football as an emerging sport, as “At least 65 NCAA schools are sponsoring women's flag football at either the club or varsity levels this year, with more slated to join in 2026.” Charlotte Executive Assoc. AD/Committee on Women’s Athletics Ragean Hill: “The growth of flag football will be exciting to watch in the NCAA as women's sports continue to generate more visibility and opportunities for female student-athletes to excel academically and athletically. The Committee on Women's Athletics wants to thank RCX Sports Foundation and USA Football for submitting the application. CWA looks forward to flag football being added to the Emerging Sports for Women program and watching the sport's exciting journey to NCAA championship status in the future.” (link)

The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen sits down with Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI), the newly appointed chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee, to discuss Walberg’s request that the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) take a closer look at how federal dollars are potentially subsidizing DI and DII athletic departments. Walberg says he doesn’t expect a swift response from the GAO, but “with the advent of NIL, certain student-athletes going for unionization, lawsuits with the NCAA, those types of things, this is becoming more of an issue. But also, our responsibility as the Education Committee, we need to look at what’s going on, especially in the cost of education, which continues to go up. … So we’re looking at other aspects and when we hear that at schools like James Madison, a pretty decent share of students at the institution itself end up paying fees for athletics, and probably no more than 5% to 20% of students are involved in athletics and they have tuition increases, how much of that cost actually adds to the cost of their education?” Walberg acknowledges it “may indeed be the case that Virginia has some stringent requirements for reporting and that’s why James Madison has come out as spending more money on student fees than any other Division I school.” He adds: “I was a high school and short-time college wrestler. I probably wouldn’t have had any NIL contracts, but I certainly wouldn’t want to be saddled with increased cost for my college education if I were paying for someone who indeed was getting a great scholarship and having the opportunity for the best tutors in many cases, then got an NIL contract that in the future wasn’t paid for by third-party private collectives, but is paid for by my student fees. That doesn’t seem to cut it when I’m still expected to pay for my college education.” (link)

Prominent Football HCs are “campaigning to transform the allotted 15 days of [spring] practices into NFL-style organized team activities in June or July,” according to CBS’ Brandon Marcello, who reports FBS coaches discussed a potential proposal to eliminate spring practices in favor of OTAs at the AFCA Convention in January. “The goal is to better organize rosters before the summer semester and combat tampering before the spring transfer portal window opens in mid-April.” CBS polled 18 FBS coaches to see if they would conduct spring scrimmages this offseason. While 10 said they would, several indicated they would hesitate if the scrimmages were televised as many are in the Big Ten and SEC. One SEC HC tells Marcello: "No spring game. I give zero sh-ts about tampering, but I care more about not getting players injured." An ACC HC says Nebraska HC Matt Rhule’s reason – to forestall tampering – is “viable, as we had people watching our players at last year's spring game and then offering them deals to transfer.” Another ACC HC sees things differently: "If someone wants to leave after spring and is tampered with then I didn't want them anyhow. They will eventually quit on you at some point." An AAC HC adds: “Our rosters get tampered with constantly. I'm not sure that playing a spring game or not would really change that." Coaches also told Marcello that further discussion on offseason workouts is expected if/when the House settlement is approved on April 7. (link)

Women’s basketball coaches are increasingly open about balancing motherhood with their jobs, according to The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings, who explains: “Through the years, women coaches have quietly supported each other. Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt famously gave birth to her son while on a recruiting trip. She later made a point to encourage women to stay in coaching after becoming mothers, including now-LSU coach Kim Mulkey, who was a Louisiana Tech assistant while pregnant in the early 1990s. Mulkey now gives baby gifts to pregnant coaches to show support.” Lady Vols HC Kim Caldwell on her pregnancy: “I think at first my whole mindset was: Lay low, lay low; don’t talk about it; don’t draw attention to it. Now I see what the bigger picture is for up-and-coming moms in this (profession).” In the late stages of her pregnancy, Oklahoma State HC Jacie Hoyt says doctors forbade her from flying, causing her to miss two road games. As such, she wanted to get back to the sidelines as quickly as she could. “It wasn’t about the job so much as: How can I be the best version of myself for my daughter and this program? I think a lot of people were kind of critical of me coming back so soon, but they don’t understand how good that actually was for me, mentally and emotionally.” USC HC Lindsey Gottlieb adds: “We have lifestyle jobs, and so if you want to keep women in the profession and have them not feel like they have to choose either coaching or parenting, trying to make things as easy as possible. Everything can evolve. … You can do both.” (link)

Mississippi State Baseball HC Chris Lemonis tells D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge that roster management is “the hardest part of our job right now. We spend so much time building rosters with recruiting – it’s portal, it’s high school, it’s juco. Right now, with a 34-man roster coming you feel when players show up, they need to play right away. There’s less of a developmental aspect.” Etheridge notes that while players no longer have to accept waiting for their turn as they develop, coaches also “have other options besides waiting on the freshmen to mature or bringing in a junior college transfer.” Kentucky HC Nick Mingione: “I think because of the draft and portal, there are so many moving parts. It is one thing to have a plan, but you better have a backup plan. No plan survives first contact. It is going to change. It is forever evolving.” Etheridge also observes that just one of the 16 SEC programs (Missouri) had a higher returnee percentage this season than in 2020. “The highest back then was LSU at 63% returnees. The highest today is Alabama at 52%, the league average in 2020. The lowest in 2020 was Ole Miss at 38%. Today that would rank tied for 13th.” More from Etheridge. (link)

CBS and CBS Sports “will likely become unavailable” on YouTube TV starting today, and Sportico’s Jacob Feldman points out that if the carriage dispute lasts long enough, it could include seven men’s basketball conference championship games and an increasing number of NCAA Tournament matchups. YouTube TV in a message to subscribers explains it is “our goal to restore Paramount content. The company is promising an $8 credit if Paramount content is unavailable “for an extended period of time,” which Feldman points out is the same amount it costs for a month of access to Paramount+. However, the linear feed of CBS Sports Network is not available through Paramount+. In a memo to employees, Paramount explained it “has been negotiating a renewal agreement with Google to provide YouTube TV subscribers with continued access to their favorite premium content from BET, CBS, CBS Sports Network, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network and more. Unfortunately, Google is unwilling to agree to reasonable terms consistent with the market, choosing to jeopardize the entertainment experience at the expense of consumers.” (link)

The NCAA sent a memo to Division I schools today providing them with instructions on how to opt into the revenue-sharing component of the House settlement ahead of the March 1 deadline, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who adds: “The NCAA also sent to DI members today a letter detailing the House transition team's work in developing a new LLC to manage & enforce the industry's new rev-share system.” The “named defendants – the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 - are ‘assumed’ to be opting into the settlement.” In detailing how the annual revenue-share cap is calculated, Dellenger notes the NCAA clarifies that donations tied to season tickets are not part of the calculations. In light of last week’s reporting by Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger that the Power 4 is considering the creation of a NewCo LLC to oversee the implementation of the House settlement, CBS’ Dennis Dodd posits the newly created CEO position atop the LLC “would get college sports as close to that Supreme Leader as there has ever been. … A source with intimate knowledge of the transition team told CBS Sports that the executive board underneath the CEO would probably be ‘weighted’ toward the SEC and Big Ten. However, sources say that who that CEO person (or persons) will be is less important than the penalties that can be applied. In a post-House world, that's where major college sports is likely to clash next.” Dodd also offers that “we're basically witnessing a takeover by the Power Four conferences (ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Big 12) of major college sports. They're the ones who are on record as wanting their own governance structure. They're the ones who can (largely) afford revenue-sharing. They're the ones who have (historically) broken the most rules. Now they're going to reset them.” The primary issue, noted sports attorney Tom Mars says, is the process itself, as he quips: "What can go wrong with a [new] committee that includes people that would be policing their competition?" Husch Blackwell partner Jason Montgomery adds: "It's such a nuanced specialty of a combination of quasi-legal and NCAA principles that is going to be mushed together further. People who have not had experience dealing with recruiting, athletics, basketball, football, can't speak the language." As for who would possibly head this new entity, Dodd provides five names suggested by sources: Former West Virginia AD/NCAA EVP for Regulatory Affairs Oliver Luck, former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban, former Stanford Football HC David Shaw, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Colorado/Washington/UCLA Football HC Rick Neuheisel. Lots more. (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips’ sitdown with ESPN’s David Hale and Andrea Adelson on Inside ACCess, during which Phillips said of the College Football Playoff: “We went into Championship Saturday, and there were two teams in the country that were not playing In the championship Saturday game for their conference, and they were secure in having a spot in the 12-team field. We had two teams participating, one which was inside the top 12 – SMU at 10 – that maybe if they lose by two touchdowns that game they’re out. That to me needs to be rectified and talked about. And if we're not going to change that – which is fine, we just all need to know what we're playing by – then what motivation is there to not protect your regular season champion – an SMU team that was 11-1, top 10 in the country? And for some reason they put themselves at risk playing in the championship game.” Phillips says of further CFP expansion: “I haven't cemented how I feel about whether it's 12 or 14, maybe 16. I do think you have to protect conference champions. Some of those other things? I don't want an invitational. I don't want an artificial tournament. That's not college sports." Full Q&A. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy catches up with several college hoops stakeholders to get a sense of how they plan to continue increasing the sport’s value, and Connecticut AD Dave Benedict says: “The compelling things for down the road are what should the schedule look like, and should there be an expansion of games? [There] certainly shouldn’t be any limitations as to how you construct the schedule anymore. What does basketball need to do to not just maintain its historical level of interest but build on it? I don’t think that is going to happen with how we currently do things.” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman says more attention needs to be paid to the early part of the season: “I don’t know if we could do much more to make our [conference] games more exciting. Conference tournaments on the men’s side are in good shape. It’s really, what could you do in October, November, December, maybe the summertime to provide a lift you’re not getting from the existing schedule and calendar?” NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt also weighs in: “[These are] reasonable questions to ask and things to consider. They’re, in some ways, not new, but there are new components -- the length of the college football season and potentially NFL [schedule changes]. How do we continue to operate in those spaces and continue to make college basketball as popular as it’s been for a very long time?” (link)

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has rescinded the Biden administration’s guidance on NIL compensation. Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor calls the guidance “overly burdensome, profoundly unfair, and it goes well beyond what agency guidance is intended to achieve. Without a credible legal justification, the Biden Administration claimed that NIL agreements between schools and student athletes are akin to financial aid and must, therefore, be proportionately distributed between male and female athletes under Title IX. Enacted over 50 years ago, Title IX says nothing about how revenue-generating athletics programs should allocate compensation among student athletes. The claim that Title IX forces schools and colleges to distribute student-athlete revenues proportionately based on gender equity considerations is sweeping and would require clear legal authority to support it. That does not exist. Accordingly, the Biden NIL guidance is rescinded.” (link); Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) responds: “College sports may change, but schools' legal obligations under Title IX doesn't. If Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress won't defend women's sports, the courts will have to.” (link); Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also weighs in: “Government intervention and mandates kill opportunities for athletes, especially in women's and Olympic sports. I am glad President Trump and his administration have righted this wrong.” (link)

Alberto Osuna Sanchez, a Tennessee baseball student-athlete who competed in junior college, has filed a suit claiming that his JUCO years should not be counted. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes Osuna Sanchez has a pending waiver with the NCAA to play an additional season and adds: “This is the baseball version of the (Diego) Pavia suit, which triggered the NCAA to issue a waiver to those in a similar situation. However, the waiver does not extend to Osuna Sanchez to compete in the 2025 baseball season. It extends only to those using a 4th year in Fall 25/Spring 26.” (link)

Virginia finished FY24 with $153.5M in revenue and $145.6M in expenses to finish with a surplus of $7.9M. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel points out that “UVA’s biggest 2023-24 upticks were ticket sales, up 17.7% to $16.6M, and media rights, up 9.2% to $33.2M. … [UVA’s] largest expenses were $30.3M for coaches’ salaries, up 2.7%, and $24.4M for scholarships, up 7.5%. Hoos Deputy AD/COO/CFO Steve Pritzker tells Teel there weren’t any financial surprises last year and says of the House settlement: “That’s something we continue to work on with the university, trying to find ways to be competitive in the changing landscape. But the court case hasn’t been settled yet, and so we’re trying to balance what’s possible without having full clarity. It would be a disservice if I gave you an (exact) answer because it might be completely different in eight weeks. We’re all taking a stab at it and doing the best we can.” (link)

Louisville generated a record $150.6M in revenue while also racking up a record $165.17M in operating expenses during FY24. The Courier-Journal’s Payton Titus notes this is the third time in the last six years the Cardinals have reported a net negative revenue to the NCAA. Titus also reports the deficit comes despite receiving $7.07M in direct institutional support, more than triple its previous high of $2.2M. Cards AD Josh Heird: "For three years (2021-2024), our men’s basketball program did not experience success, which resulted in a significant decline in revenue, reflected in our current deficit. Also reflected in the deficit are the significant expenses incurred by the men’s basketball coaching staff transition in (March) 2024. As with many of our peers, inflationary factors in Fiscal Year 2024 resulted in higher operating and salary expenses. As we enter the revenue-sharing era of college athletics, we will continue to explore every option available to us to maximize revenue while mitigating expenses. Every area of our department has a responsibility to ensure the fiscal health of our athletics department, now and into the future.” UL’s payroll increased from $49.36M in FY23 to $54.63M in FY24. Coaching salaries increased by $4.1M, while support staff and administrative salaries increased by $1.6M. UL paid out $7.58M in severance. Ticket sales revenue returned to pre-pandemic levels, bringing in $32.82M, just surpassing FY19’s total of $32.81M. More on the Cards’ finances. (link)

Rutgers ranked seventh in the Big Ten in overall spending at $178.3M during FY24, trailing Ohio State ($292.7M), Michigan ($238.3M), Penn State ($215.1M), Nebraska ($213.5M), Wisconsin ($186.7M) and Michigan State ($180.5M). Meanwhile, NJ Advance Media’s Keith Sargeant notes the Scarlet Knights reported the third-lowest revenue among conference programs at $136.8M, ranking ahead of only Maryland ($127.8M) and Purdue ($134.9M). “Rutgers also received $28.6M in subsidies, the largest total amount in the Big Ten, according to the NJ Advance Media review. It reported a $41.5M shortfall, which when added to the subsidies, means the department’s deficit topped $70M for the second time in four years. Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Rutgers’ athletic deficit has ballooned to $438.9M, according to an 11-year review of the university’s budgets.” Scarlet Knights Interim AD Ryan Pisarri: “We are continually evaluating ways to maximize our current revenues in athletics. Bringing our multimedia rights and corporate partnerships in-house has already proven beneficial for maintaining a greater share of our revenues in those areas. In addition to revenue, it will be equally important for us to examine our current operating expenditures to ensure future success. Efficient spending and budget management will be critical as we enter the new world of college athletics.” (link)

+ SBJ’s Ben Portnoy looks back at RevelXP’s third year in charge of the College Football Playoff’s premium experience and observes that “this year’s efforts around the CFP title game included featuring KC and the Sunshine Band as part of the Playoff Premium Champion’s Party hosted at the historic Tabernacle concert hall in downtown Atlanta, among other varying VIP events for customers throughout the weekend.” CEO Wes Day: “There are more big games more frequently and also just more games in cool, new locations that are great to travel to. We’ve seen that in fan behavior and group travel and, therefore, larger groups that we’re hosting in the regular season.” At just over a decade old, the CFP “continues to evolve as a high-profile place for decision makers and sponsors to gather,” according to Portnoy, and Day remarks: “This trend around the national championship, it’s not the Super Bowl, it is college football. It’s different. But some of those aspects where this is becoming about the events and the events around the event. We’re in the early innings of it, but that trend is definitely underway.” (link)
