BYU President Shane Reese points to a national search as part of the process to hire a new AD: “We’re going to cast a broad net with the intent of getting the person who is passionate, who bleeds blue and committed to the mission. [...] The alignment piece, understanding that we’re sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and our connection to our board of trustees, and having that alignment from top to bottom is an incredible asset. I would call it our strategic advantage. That means that we’ve got to be rigorous in our approach for searching for a replacement. [...] I don’t think you’ll ever replace a man like Tom Holmoe. I think there’s a successor in this role. But Tom is almost an irreplaceable athletic director. Twenty years as an athletic director. I go around and look at Big 12 schools, and that’s a rare individual.” (link)

USC AD Jen Cohen covers some good ground with The Athletic’s Antonio Morales. “Guiding principles” connected to the House settlement: “The first is ensuring championship-level football. That is a huge part of who we are at USC, and football is the big economic engine of our athletic department. It allows for us to do a lot for a lot of other programs and students so we are prioritizing that in our planning. Yet, at the same time, broad-based athletic success is part of the DNA at USC. … With what Lindsay (Gottlieb) is doing with women’s basketball, Coach Muss’ (Eric Musselman) program is on the rise and our Olympic sport heritage is something we’re really proud of here. It’s something we’re not just proud of as an athletic department, the university is really proud of it too. With the Olympics coming, we want to ensure we’re prioritizing broad-based success.” On the potential for cutting sport programs: “No, we’re fully committed to ensuring broad-based excellence and success for athletic programs moving forward.” More Football specific thoughts: “A huge priority for both Lincoln [Riley] and I was to ensure he could focus on coaching the team and focus on football. His job as a head coach, like every head coach in college football, has changed so much certainly since he’s been here, but just in the last six months. That’s how crazy things have evolved in our operations. We’re both really clear and shared the understanding that he needed more support around him to focus on roster management, recruiting, eval, how we’re going to manage the budget and negotiations and all those things that are now part of the college football landscape that didn’t exist a few years ago.” Cohen also says the Trojans have raised $174M as part of the Cornerstone fundraising push & that new Football GM Chad Bowden reports to both her & Riley. Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene is out in front of the media again, this time with WTAE’s Andrew Stockey: “Every athletic director around the country, at our level in particular, is looking for additional resources. So, how do we do that is we have to really be targeted. First of all, it has to come from the horse's mouth, where it's my responsibility to articulate to our university, our fan base, our coaches, that the best way that we can provide successful programs is through talent acquisition, which has not changed. The method in which we provide and acquire talent has changed, and that is through NIL and through revenue share, so we talk to our donors and we talk to those who support our programs about the importance of those things.” On high-profile head coaches Pat Narduzzi in Football & Jeff Capel in Men’s Basketball: “I think the way we evaluate both Pat and Jeff is different now than it was even last year, two years ago and three years ago. We have an obligation and a responsibility to provide them the tools and the tool belt for them to use. They are the carpenters, so to speak. It is their job to figure out how to use certain tools to build certain things. That is not our job as leadership, but we are here to help them. We're here to help them grow, develop, evolve, think about things a little bit differently, be a sounding board, be a support person, be a kick in the tail. [...] It's investing in the stock market, right? And you invest for the long haul. And just because you have a down day in the market, or you have an up day in the market, that shouldn't change your process. It shouldn't change your end goal.” (link)

In a long letter to fans, Davidson AD Chris Clunie outlines the Wildcats plans for the future, with a basketball focus: “First, we will seek to build a sustainable, championship-level, competitive framework for basketball. Davidson College will opt into the settlement and share revenue across our men's and women's basketball programs. … Second, as other institutions cut back on resources for teams other than football and basketball, we will push for and solicit increased investment in endowed scholarships and direct team support across Davidson Athletics. … Third, we will make this commitment to our men's and women's basketball by securing new resources for this purpose. We will not cut academic, student life or other athletics programs in order to fund this basketball initiative. This will require support from those who believe strongly in the ways basketball has been and will continue to be an integral part of Davidson College.” Lots more, including his explanation why Davidson will not be switching conferences or divisions to mitigate the changing landscape of college athletics. Clemson AD Graham Neff met with the Board of Trustees last week and provided the group a few updates. Construction of the Watt Family Performance and Wellness Center will wrap up and the facility will open later this spring. Phase II of the Littlejohn Coliseum and Swann Pavilion renovation project continues to move forward with “some completion” expected in 2026. For the 13th semester in a row, all Tigers student-athletes achieved a GPA of at least 3.0, with a fall 2024 cumulative GPA or 3.34. Former Los Angeles Chargers Director of Scouting Kevin Kelly has been approved as director of player evaluation and acquisition with a two year deal worth $360K annually. The Board also approved one-year contract extensions for eight football coaches, coordinator and directors. More. (link)

Results from Arizona’s FY24 included a $20.5M deficit on $133.5M of operational revenues over $154M in expenses, the latter of which was a $11M year-over-year increase. More from Sportico: “...the cash-strapped university handed its athletic department $10.5 million in direct institutional support, $22.3 million in indirect institutional support and $3.4 million in student fees. [...] On the bright side, Arizona’s FY24 subsidies were about 24% lower than the $47.6 million in campus-based support the school disclosed in 2022-23.” (link)

Former Arizona President Robert Robbins tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner that Washington State “should be thrilled” by the hire of President Elizabeth Cantwell. Robbins, who hired Cantwell to serve as SVP of Research and Innovation at Arizona, says: “She’s incredibly bright and a quick study. At Arizona, she didn’t have direct responsibility for athletics. But she was on my senior leadership team, and we talked about [athletics] a lot. She’d always come to games and sit in my box. She understands the importance of college athletics on university life.” Meanwhile, Wilner points out the turnover rate among campus CEOs is similar to that of football coaches. In the legacy Pac-12 alone, WSU joins Washington, Arizona, Cal, Stanford, Colorado and USC as schools who have recently hired a new president or chancellor or soon will. Robbins notes that “life is going to be very different for universities and athletic departments going forward. Having a president who understands college sports is paramount. … Betsy [Cantwell] got experience on the front lines at Utah State. She had to hire an athletic director (and football and men’s basketball coaches). She lived the Pac-12 situation vicariously through me. And now she’s dealing with leaving the Mountain West.” (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos catches up with several football personnel staffers and collective operators to find out who spent the most money in the portal, who the highest-paid player was and more takeaways from this winter. As for who spent the most on their transfer classes, an ACC staffer mentions Oregon, Ohio State, Miami, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and South Carolina. Texas Tech also received several mentions, with one SEC staffer saying: “Auburn, Michigan, Ole Miss, Texas and Texas Tech. In theory, Tech fu-ked up the market for everybody.” As far as who was the highest paid player in the portal, the consensus seems to be Miami (FL) QB Carson Beck and Duke QB Darian Mensah. An SEC collective operator says the requests from players are “getting pretty preposterous. Athletes asking for a $100K car on top of the deal, asking for a furnished, three-bedroom townhouse. … Why don’t you pay us $100K to cover our taxes, too? And private air travel for the family to and from games.” A Big 12 staffer adds: “Everybody just asks for cars. Cars grow on trees apparently. Normally it’s a $50K car.” Most of the people Nakos talked to identified offensive line as the most difficult position to retain, with one explaining: “It doesn’t matter if you’re good or not. If you play, somebody will pay you. Last year it was $250K for a good one. This year with revenue sharing and NIL, it was a minimum $400K up to $750K and $1M for some guys.” Hardest position to add? Responses range from wide receiver to defensive tackle with an ACC collective operator noting WRs are going for 3x what they were two or three years ago. The general consensus in regards to tampering is that it’s business as usual with an ACC collective operator saying: “You just have to accept that it’s happening. Everybody’s doing the same thing. We’re all evaluating our roster and trying to figure out where the next move is.” (link)

More than 40 new colleges and universities have achieved Research-1 status under a new, simplified Carnegie classification methodology announced Thursday morning. The revamped classification requires universities to meet two criteria rather than the previous 10: spend at least $50M on total annual research and award at least 70 research doctorates a year. Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching President Timothy Knowles: “The arms race to become an R-1 institution created a whole set of perverse incentives for an institution – whether it was adding new doctoral programs for a more comprehensive array of doctorates or aspiring to add higher and higher degrees – when in fact that may not have been central to their mission. The aim shouldn’t be for all 4,000-plus higher education institutions in the nation to try to become large Ph.D.-conferring universities. The strength of the American postsecondary sector is its diversity of institution types.” (link)

While NCAA President Charlie Baker credited the Trump administration’s executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports as setting a “clear, national standard,” Sportico’s Daniel Libit observes the Trump White House has also put forth a “series of other education policy initiatives that are injecting new uncertainty into a college sports landscape already grappling with legal and financial instability,” including the rescission of the Biden administration’s Title IX guidance on NIL, cuts to NIH research funding and directing the OMB to freeze federal grants to institutions with DEI programs. Furthermore, Libit notes that “Trump’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education are likely to encounter even greater legal challenges. Moreover, the president has intertwined his calls to abolish the $268B bureaucracy with attempts to leverage it to advance his own agenda.” While some critics say the decision to rescind the Biden administration’s Title IX NIL guidance undermines Trump’s stated desire of protecting women athletes, others, like former Olympic swimmer and women’s rights advocate Nancy Hogshead-Makar, “point to OCR’s history of fecklessness.” Hogshead-Makar says she filed 101 “very detailed” Title IX complaints with OCR, none of which ended up materializing into action. As such, she tells Libit she “would not mind it moving to the Department of Justice, because this has not worked.” Regarding the restrictions on NIH research funding, James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis explains it could have a ripple effect throughout universities, including on athletic departments. “You’ve got (athletic departments) that have either never had to ask for institutional support or only asked for a little that now are trying to plug a $20.5M gap. So I think the timing is just unfortunate for athletics, because they are already in crisis mode.” (link)

Altius Sports Partners Founder Casey Schwab is working to sign all FBS Football student-athletes NIL licensing rights for the college football video game with his new company, Pathway Sports and Entertainment. So far, over 450 players have signed to receive $1,500, over double what they received for the last game, in what Schwab calls “the largest commercial program for college athletes in history.” ESPN’s Pete Thamel adds the potential total for all FBS members tops $17M. More from Schwab: “Most athletic directors and most college football coaches want to support their football players in making legitimate commercial dollars. The reception so far has been excellent.” (link)
|
More on the formation of Pathway Sports and Entertainment from Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the initial outlay is likely to exceed $20M, rather than $17M, with a pool of millions set aside for “ambassador payments” to certain players. Founder Casey Schwab: “The overall vision is for athletes to make more money than we saw in the first year of the video game. We are creating mutual value here. This is a good thing for athletic directors, coaches and schools because they are trying to create legit opportunities for their players. These are legitimate.” Dellenger notes the “video game group licensing deal may serve as a blueprint for schools on how to generate more compensation for their athletes above the revenue-share cap. Already, NIL collectives are evolving into marketing agencies with the intent on creating real deals for athletes — “the new battlefield” in recruiting, according to one collective director. Schwab has “no concerns” over the deals passing muster with the new NIL clearinghouse as Pathway is using “decades of data” to arrive at its payment amounts. The licensing agreement viewed by Dellenger promises to deliver a school $175K in “legitimate, above cap marketing payments” for that school’s athletes. That figure includes $40,000 in additional “ambassador payments” to be mutually determined between Pathway and the school. (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes believes most FBS schools will remain close to 85 football scholarships, with the remaining athletes making the roster as walk-ons who are eligible for NIL and academic bonuses. While each school will have a “bucket of resources,” Barnes explains the specifics of those resources have yet to be determined. “It’s one of those things where the plane is leaving the runway as we build it, because everything’s coming so quickly. It’s not like a switch flips and all of a sudden we magically have a bunch of money. We’re out actively raising it.” As of now there are no plans for layoffs, but Barnes notes that when a position opens “we’ll have to decide whether that position is actually something we want to continue to fund, or use those dollars elsewhere.” For sports that don’t generate revenue, Barnes acknowledges that “it’s going to be tough to fund those at the level they’re at. The (House) settlement has unintended consequences. … The new expenses, those dollars have to come from somewhere. In prioritizing revenue sports, there will be some reductions over time in Olympic sports.” While other schools are folding their collectives, Barnes says OSU and Dam Nation will continue working together. (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor says K-State is exploring the possibility of selling the naming rights to Bramlage Coliseum, adding on-field advertisements at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and selling beer at more than just a few designated areas during football games as ways to generate more revenue. The Wildcats have tried to sell naming rights for its basketball arena since the summer of 2023, according to Taylor, who says the department was close to a deal with one partner, but negotiations fell apart at the finish line. “There is still a lot of interest in those naming rights. We’re still working at it. It’s just not going as fast as we thought it would.” Regarding beer sales at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Taylor explains the only remaining obstacle is that “there are some physical limitations to our building that we may have to work through before we do it.” Overall, with the House settlement looming, Taylor notes: “We are looking at everything we can possibly look at to generate as much revenue as we can.” (link)

Appalachian State is preparing to enter the 2025-26 season with the expectation it will share revenue with student-athletes, and Mountaineers AD Doug Gillin says: "Many supporters have been asking how they can help in this evolving landscape of revenue sharing. One of the answers is the new App State Football Support Fund, which is critical to the future success of App State Football. The cost to continue to compete at a high level is increasing. We are committed to building on App State's proud winning tradition.” As part of the evolving landscape, App State will not renew its relationship with the TIGMA Collective, and the Mountaineers have outlined three specific comprehensive excellence priorities: scholarships, sport-specific support funds and facilities. Penn State will rely on temporary seating for the next two seasons at Beaver Stadium but plans to maintain the stadium’s 107K-seat capacity during the $700M renovation, according to Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft, who says: “The most exciting part of the new offerings is there will be something for everyone. Someone who wants a budget-conscious option for their family will find that. Someone who wants a premium game day and seating experience can have that. And everything in between. We are really proud of the volume of season tickets and season ticket holders we have. That is unique to Penn State and this seating mix allows us to continue to build on that tradition and legacy.” When the renovation is finished, The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder notes the stadium’s west side will consist of 75% non-premium seating and 25% premium seating. The structure on the west side will be 30 feet higher than it previously was, but fans will be at least 100 feet closer to the field. Additionally, the venue’s footprint will significantly increase due to the higher structure and the widened concourses throughout the stadium. Kraft: “The survey results showed our fans wanted more seating options and price points. “In the current building, we essentially have three different options and price points: bench seating, club seats and suites. That’s it. The survey showed our fans had a strong interest in chairbacks, multiple sideline club options and loge boxes, which is similar to what they’ve seen in other venues when we travel for postseason games.” (link)

North Carolina leaders are “leaning toward” building a new men’s basketball arena complex at the off-campus Carolina North location to replace the Dean E. Smith Center, according to Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes. Chancellor Lee Roberts recently told the Triangle Business Journal that "if we were to move the basketball arena to a location away from the central core of campus, we wouldn't put it in the middle of surface parking lots with nothing else around. It would be part of a broader mixed-use development program, as you've seen in several other venues across the country with multiple uses, including lodging, retail, entertainment and dining. And I'll tell you that would be a significant improvement on the Smith Center location. So it is walkable for a lot of the students, but there's nowhere to get a bite to eat before the game, there's nowhere to grab a beer after the game.” Barnes notes the Carolina North plan calls for “roughly 20% of the 16K-seat capacity to be premium seating, with luxury suites split into tiers, as well as various club seating areas, according to sources. In addition to 3K student seats, that would allow for roughly 10K general seats, split between the lower and upper bowls. The projected timeline from the beginning of pre-design to the completion of construction is just shy of six years, sources confirmed.” (link)

Florida State reported spending $169.7M in FY24 while bringing in $185M in revenue, a surplus of over $15.2M. Contributions increased from $54.2M to $62.3M YoY, and Warchant’s Ira Schoffel reports FSU’s “next biggest revenue source came from the ACC for television/media rights, and that total of $32.7M was roughly flat from the year before. The conference also sent FSU about $6M for league bowl revenue, which was about $4M more than in FY23.” The Seminoles also received about $27.7M in royalties, licensing fees and advertising. On the expenses side, FSU’s two largest categories were nearly $29.6M in coaches’ salaries and another $29.6M for administration and support staff salaries. Another $24.9M went to “other operating expenses,” and an additional $23.4M was charged to overhead and administrative costs. Football racked up $61.1M in expenses, but the Seminoles generated $90.9M in revenue, including $28M in donations. FSU spent $10.9M on men’s basketball while bringing in slightly under $18M in revenue with about $5M coming from contributions. (link)
