USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz writes further on the National Labor Relations Board’s acting general counsel William Cowen rescinding several memoranda issued by his predecessor, Jennifer Abruzzo, including one that said she viewed college athletes as employees of their schools under the National Labor Relations Act. Cowen wrote in Friday’s memorandum: “Over the past few years, our dedicated and talented staff have worked diligently to process an ever-increasing workload. Notwithstanding these efforts, we have seen our backlog of cases grow to the point where it is no longer sustainable. The unfortunate truth is that if we attempt to accomplish everything, we risk accomplishing nothing. Since assuming the role of Acting General Counsel, working with experienced field and headquarters professionals, I have conducted a comprehensive review of active General Counsel Memoranda and determined that the following actions are warranted,” including the recission of the college-athlete memo. MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy sat down with Division 1 Rejects host Kobe Manzo to discuss a number of topics. On the new super region alignment that puts the MIAA in super region 4 with the GAC, LSC and RMAC: “One thing is a lot of our coaches recruit heavy in Texas. […] We're not escaping much when we leave Grand Valley and Ferris State behind in in a different region. It's going to be a power region but I really like the alignment and the states that we're going to be playing against that probably line up more with the states where our coaches are doing a lot of recruiting.” (link)

Edward Waters AD Ivana Rich talks to News4JAX Sports’ Alessandra Pontbriand about her mindset as one of three Black woman ADs in Florida: “I would say it means that we are supporting women. We’re championing women and we’re creating spaces for women to thrive in this society. I always say that when I took this role I was going to do it my way. They have to be able to relate to you, but they have to know that you’re authentic and real. I have to show up and show out every day so that other women and other young girls who aspire to be athletic directors or in other leadership positions, I want to show them that they can do this and they can do it well.” (link)

Teamworks Senior Business Development Executive Miles Gallagher sits down with BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott to discuss his transition from AD at his alma mater, Millersville, to Teamworks, providing solutions for departments, his growth as a leader and more. On where Gallagher feels Teamworks can help: “The more we have conversations, when there is uncertainty, people are tightening their belts financially. That's just a reality and so when I look and talk with people, I think efficiency is going to be king. So it's really rethinking how do you operate. For a lot of people, I think they're either making the decision of, I have to clean this up now and get more efficient under a single system to be able to support our department, or I'm going to be behind and three or four years from now I'm going to be wishing that we were doing things more efficiently because just the way of old isn't going to cut it. St. Edward’s launches its “Unleash the Herd-Ignite the Future” scholarship fundraising drive with each program slated to hold a two-week campaign benefiting its own athletic scholarship fund. AD Dr. Jim Sarra: “University leadership has elevated us as a cornerstone to its strategic plan and invested in facility upgrades, new programs, and more. We're asking our Hilltop community to keep the momentum going by contributing where it will help most: providing scholarship opportunities to strengthen and grow our student-athlete community." Women’s Basketball and Volleyball began the program on February 15, while final campaigns will conclude March 15. (link)

The American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon’s Imagining the Digital Future Center conducted a survey of 330 college presidents, provosts and other senior leaders to gather their thoughts on the impact AI is having on teaching and learning, and just 43% said their institution was ready to effectively use generative AI to prepare students for the future. The same percentage responded positively when asked if they were preparing faculty for teaching and mentoring with generative AI. When asked about challenges to adopting AI in courses, 93% cited faculty unfamiliarity with generative AI, and 84% cited lack of training and support. Regarding AI’s impact on campus, 45% thought it would be more positive than negative, 27% thought it would be equally positive and negative, 17 percent thought it would be negative and 10% said they didn’t know. Imagining the Digital Future Center Director Lee Rainie: “This is really an inflection point. What we see in these data is there are people who are gung-ho to move forward, and there are people who are terrified, who don’t know how to move forward or don’t want to move forward. That makes it sort of hard to figure out, as a broad class of institutions, where the future lies.” (link)

USA Today’s Chris Quintana and Kenny Jacoby take a look at the world of postgraduate football and find that “these programs thrive in the unregulated space between high school and higher education, and they’re fueled by the hopes of athletes who garnered little attention from big-time colleges, whether because of bad grades, small size or injuries. Owners of these teams often describe their players – more often than not men of color – as ‘at-risk’ or ‘inner-city youth,’ whose best hope to attend college is through football. They understand these desires – many played in college or the NFL themselves – and have discovered they can promise anything while delivering next to nothing. They charge their players thousands of dollars and seldom face consequences when their programs fall apart.” Some key findings from Quintana and Jacoby’s reporting: program owners often exaggerate or misrepresent the food, lodging and other services they say they’ll provide; seasons often end early and without warning; injuries are commonplace and made more dangerous by the lack of athletic trainers or safety protocols; college and high school football teams play and practice under strict health and safety rules, but experts say they fear for postgrad players who have no such safeguards; few players find the college offers they’re seeking; those who do succeed often say it's despite their postgrad program, not because of it; and local law enforcement and federal regulators have cracked down on a handful of team owners, but no single agency regulates or oversees them.” Lots more.
