USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz writes further on the National Labor Relations Board’s acting general counsel William Cowen rescinding several memoranda issued by his predecessor, Jennifer Abruzzo, including one that said she viewed college athletes as employees of their schools under the National Labor Relations Act. Cowen wrote in Friday’s memorandum: “Over the past few years, our dedicated and talented staff have worked diligently to process an ever-increasing workload. Notwithstanding these efforts, we have seen our backlog of cases grow to the point where it is no longer sustainable. The unfortunate truth is that if we attempt to accomplish everything, we risk accomplishing nothing. Since assuming the role of Acting General Counsel, working with experienced field and headquarters professionals, I have conducted a comprehensive review of active General Counsel Memoranda and determined that the following actions are warranted,” including the recission of the college-athlete memo. More on NESCAC student-athletes’ push to convince the conference to allow Football programs to participate in the DIII postseason in a piece by the AP’s Jimmy Golen. Tufts student-athlete Vaughn Seelicke affirms that his peers are following the lead of the Ivy League (DI), which will allow its teams to participate in the FCS (DI) playoffs beginning next season: “Look at all the other schools that are doing it. If there was really an academic drop-off, they wouldn’t be doing it. [...] The issue is equity, being the only sport that doesn’t do it.” Seelicke expects Jumbos AD John Morris to advance the proposal in an effort to get it on the agenda for the NESCAC’s April meeting. Teamworks Senior Business Development Executive Miles Gallagher sits down with BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott to discuss his transition from AD at his alma mater, Millersville (DII), to Teamworks, providing solutions for departments, his growth as a leader and more. On where Gallagher feels Teamworks can help: “The more we have conversations, when there is uncertainty, people are tightening their belts financially. That's just a reality and so when I look and talk with people, I think efficiency is going to be king. So it's really rethinking how do you operate. For a lot of people, I think they're either making the decision of, I have to clean this up now and get more efficient under a single system to be able to support our department, or I'm going to be behind and three or four years from now I'm going to be wishing that we were doing things more efficiently because just the way of old isn't going to cut it. That I think ultimately to me is where this is heading from a technology perspective is efficiency is going to be the king, especially in these small college spaces, is we just have to do things differently.” More: “That's really where we're able to solve a lot of the pain points for athletic administrators and coaches in really a couple ways is one, we're able to scale staff and really support them and retain staff by creating systems in one operating system. Former Cornell College baseball student-athlete/DIII SAAC Chair Jack Langan sits down with D3.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention to discuss the organization’s current priorities including garnering Congressional engagement focused on class-action protection with antitrust laws, providing peers with proper education on sports betting, working to prevent student-athletes from being classified as employees and having discussions about NIL and its implications throughout multiple divisions. Langan on what student-athletes can do to advocate for DIII: “Talk to your representatives, meet with people, be active, invite Senators and legislators, have them come to your campuses. USA Today’s Chris Quintana and Kenny Jacoby take a look at the world of postgraduate football and find that “these programs thrive in the unregulated space between high school and higher education, and they’re fueled by the hopes of athletes who garnered little attention from big-time colleges, whether because of bad grades, small size or injuries. Owners of these teams often describe their players – more often than not men of color – as ‘at-risk’ or ‘inner-city youth,’ whose best hope to attend college is through football. They understand these desires – many played in college or the NFL themselves – and have discovered they can promise anything while delivering next to nothing. They charge their players thousands of dollars and seldom face consequences when their programs fall apart.” Some key findings from Quintana and Jacoby’s reporting: program owners often exaggerate or misrepresent the food, lodging and other services they say they’ll provide; seasons often end early and without warning; injuries are commonplace and made more dangerous by the lack of athletic trainers or safety protocols; college and high school football teams play and practice under strict health and safety rules, but experts say they fear for postgrad players who have no such safeguards; few players find the college offers they’re seeking; those who do succeed often say it's despite their postgrad program, not because of it; and local law enforcement and federal regulators have cracked down on a handful of team owners, but no single agency regulates or oversees them.” Lots more.
