The SEC is talking about “reimagining” its football championship weekend into a series of play-in games to the College Football Playoff, according to The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Seth Emerson, who note the discussion includes the “somewhat radical possibility of the eighth-place team getting a chance to earn a bid by knocking out the top seed. … This isn’t the only idea, and there doesn’t yet appear a consensus. But it shows how far the conference is going to rethink championship weekend.” The Big Ten’s discussions have involved the top two teams playing for the conference title, while No. 3 would face No. 6 and No. 4 would play No. 5 in CFP play-in games. Again, nothing is finalized, but Emerson and Dochterman note there’s “potential for the games to take place on campuses or even all three in two days at one venue.” Illinois AD Josh Whitman: “One of the things that we’re going to continue to prioritize is trying to find ways to make our regular season as exciting as we possibly can. How can we keep as many fan bases engaged into November? How can we create meaningful football games in November? So, any ideas that strike at that are things that are going to be worth having conversations about.” Overall, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione says the “conversations were really creative and innovative and robust and ended up with several suggestions that we could provide our leadership, our commissioners, as they go forward with a couple of key meetings in the next couple weeks.” (link)
|
ESPN’s Heather Dinich with more reporting on yesterday’s meetings in New Orleans as Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti reiterates on the College Football Playoff front: “We're in favor of going to a straight seeding, where there's no difference between rankings and seeding like we had this year. We're in support of that for next year.” On additional synergy across leagues: “People are working together. The work that's been done around the (House) settlement among the conferences is probably unprecedented in terms of the amount of collaboration that's required to get this right.” SEC boss Greg Sankey: “Moving forward, Tony described a methodology that was agreed to by everyone a year ago for how decisions will be made by everyone -- not dictated by us -- agreed to by everyone. We have a responsibility to use that wisely.” (link)
|
ESPN’s Pete Thamel adds forward-looking context via sources: “There's a call set for this weekend for the A4 Commissioners in advance of the CFP meetings in Dallas. There's expected to be an update of what transpired in the SEC-Big Ten meetings in New Orleans and potential steps ahead for the CFP. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey made clear today that he wanted to share with colleagues potential next steps for the CFP in 2026 and beyond before articulating them publicly.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork is in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff, explaining that “we're just at a time where you have to put everything on the table to really capitalize on the moment in college [athletics]. If we're sharing revenue with the athletes, which is the right thing to do, how do we produce more content? How do we have more high-level matchups? Clearly, the viewership and the CFP people want to watch these games and they want high-level matchups, so I think we owe it to the game. We owe it to our athletes to say, ‘Can we have more content?' And more content means more games. So is that 14 (teams)? Is that 16? I don't know what the right number is. I think there's a lot of different models that we've studied. Clearly, the Big Ten and the SEC were at the forefront. We had the biggest brands. But we also need to protect the game of college football to make sure that it's accessible for as many people that can really live in this world as possible. So I'm for expansion again.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake starts his tour of the new Pac-12 at Boise State, where Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey calls the financial comparison between Boise and Oregon “apples and chainsaws.” While doing more with less has long been a point of pride for the Broncos, Dickey acknowledges that “we’ve got to find a way to do more.” Canzano recalls how Boise State began building its football brand by playing on Friday nights, something former WAC/MAC/Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson notes was “taboo” at the time. However, the community got behind the idea, and “Gene Bleymaier, the school’s former athletic director, opened the home football stadium — blue turf and all — to the region’s high schools. He invited them to play Saturday games in Bronco Stadium. It was a brilliant strategy that united the community and resulted in a full stadium for those once-unthinkable Friday night games.” Benson adds: “Once they figured out they could fill the stadium and pick up a $100K inconvenience fee, it was on.” More: “Fall enrollment: 27,250. That’s a 13 percent increase since 2020. Jeremiah Shinn, the vice president of enrollment at Boise State, told me that in-state students represent a large portion of the spike. There was also a 66 percent spike in out-of-state residents since 2014. This is a campus that is growing while other universities are facing enrollment crisis.” (link)

Rider AD Don Harnum discusses the addition of alcohol sales at men’s basketball games this season: “What we are trying to do is create a better fan experience and to get people here early so they can eat, have a beer. … We are trying to do it in our facility and create a more pre-game vibe, excitement and connection to the program and make the game more of a big-time event for people. … it’s a 7 o’clock game, maybe they can meet there at 5:30 and have something to eat and a beer. It’s nothing too elaborate but we are just trying to make it a friendly gathering place.” Right now, alcohol is only available for men’s hoops games, but Harnum says it could be offered at women’s sports and wrestling contests depending on crowd size. “Until we have some teams that are going to draw at least 1,000 it probably won’t be worth our vendors’ time to come and set up.” (link)

More on Blueprint Sports’ acquisition of Student Athlete NIL (SANIL). Financial terms were not disclosed, but the companies combined raised and delivered more than $108M in NIL payments to student-athletes across 70 athletic departments in 2024. The newly merged company will operate under the Blueprint banner, and SANIL CEO Chris Brown will take over as Blueprint’s COO. Blueprint CEO Rob Sine: “Both companies have experienced tremendous transformations to remain agile over the past four years. The new leadership team that SANIL has assembled in the last eight months and their substantial investment in technology made this acquisition an exciting opportunity for us. This move will enable us to unify the brightest minds and offer the most innovative solutions and top-tier NIL and data services to generate revenue and empower the next generation of college athletic departments and conferences.” Brown adds: “As we started to grow, build tech, build data, analyze data, we knew the logical solution to meet the needs of our clients was to partner with somebody at scale. Now we have a big tech platform, a national infrastructure to meet the needs of advertisers and brands and then data that will help to help our clients with future decision making, and be able to look at that data and predict how much money they’re going to need to deploy.” (link, link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines how Pathway Sports and Entertainment’s foray into licensing could spur meaningful change to student-athletes, schools, consumers and the video game industry itself, noting that the company’s “early licensing agreements would pay athletes $1,500 in upfront cash, while also creating new arrangements with video game publishers, allowing for athletes to receive royalty payments and participate in some of the ‘upside’ that is currently available to schools.” Regarding that upside, Brown reports licensing revenue breakdowns obtained via open records requests showed multiple schools earning “well above and beyond their initial licensing projections (i.e, schools that projected five-figure licensing fees were instead paid north of $200,000)” for EA College Football 25. Pathway Founder Casey Schwab tells Brown: “I want to be clear that this isn’t about securing just a one-time, short-term increase in cash.” Rather, he added, the focus was on creating new and sustainable frameworks for all parties involved. Pathway, Schwab says, is eyeing a future where the likenesses of college and professional football players are joined, which would allow video game publishers to more easily use (and pay for) those likeness rights across multiple titles. Illinois AD Josh Whitman on how Pathway’s model could benefit schools: “As college athletics continues its rapid pace of change, programs are looking for partners to provide market-based resources and national visibility to their student-athletes. … [Schwab] and the Pathway team are creating enhanced opportunities for our football student-athletes, which, by extension, is a win for our football program as well." Seton Hall is suing former President Joseph Nyre, who sued the university last year for alleged breach of contract and retaliation, among other accusations. In its suit, the university accuses Nyre of “illicitly accessing, downloading, maintaining, and later disseminating confidential and proprietary documents, as well as documents protected by the attorney-client and work product privileges, and information after his departure as President of the University.” Those documents led to critical reports about the university’s current president, Monsignor Joseph Reilly, in outlets such as Politico. The complaint also names John Does 1–10 and refers to them as “persons who are in possession of documents unlawfully maintained, retrieved, accessed, and/or downloaded.” (link)

With 1.5 seconds left and a 110-98 lead over Alabama, Missouri Men’s Basketball HC Dennis Gates called a time out, walked to the scorers table to get on the mic and tell the crowd “Do not rush the court!” He was promptly booed. In his post game press conference, Gates added: “We need that money to go to NIL (name, image and likeness). We don’t need to be getting fines out there.” Had Missouri fans rushed the floor, the Tigers would have incurred a $500K fine, which would have taken the basketball team’s fines to $750K for the season as fans stormed the court when MU beat Kansas earlier this year. USC will not host a spring football game this year, per the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, who adds “The decision to not have a traditional game w/ fans in attendance, I’m told, is another change brought upon by the evolving college football landscape. … Spring practices at USC will remain closed to the public. But in lieu of not having a spring game, a source says, USC is planning to hold an event this spring that brings together former players, as well as a fan appreciation event with the team this summer.” (link)

Delaware AD Chrissi Rawak will depart to become the next President/CEO at USA Swimming. Rawak talks with Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde about her appointment: “I never in a million years imagined this would be an opportunity that I would have. The experiences that I have had leading organizations and building organizations, and then certainly the passion I have and the love I have for this incredible sport—full-circle moment is absolutely a phrase I’ve used to describe it.” Rawak goes on to note that being “unprecedentedly successful [in 2028] is going to be really important for us, and something that I’m confident in. I know we have brilliant coaches across this country. I know we have athletes that are committed to being exceptional, and my responsibility is, number one, hire a national team managing director to help really lead that initiative and partnership with me. … We're all recognizing the incredible importance of the Olympics on home soil and what that does for us. But for me, it's about what are we doing to lead up to that? But there's no doubt that our success in L.A. is critically important.” Senior Deputy AD for Revenue Generation and Sport Administration Jordan Skolnick will serve as Interim AD for the Blue Hens. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey declined to discuss particulars around any future College Football Playoff formats after today’s league meeting with the Big Ten, “citing the fact that the SEC and Big Ten first ‘owe’ the other commissioners their thoughts before sharing publicly,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti both indicated they are in favor of changing the seeding for the 2025 playoff, and Dellenger notes they want seeding based directly on the rankings without automatic byes for conference champions. Also from Dellenger: “SEC ADs & coaches did discuss the potential of moving to nine conference games both Monday and Tuesday. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says they have not made a decision but it does sound like several people in the room, at first against nine games, are re-thinking their position. … While nothing was decided in meetings this week, the SEC and Big Ten continue to deeply discuss an expanded, multi-AQ format, and the SEC - as Greg Sankey suggested today - is closer than ever, perhaps, in moving to nine conference games.” Sankey says of thinking about the rest of college sports when making decisions: "If I was just representing the SEC, we'd still have a four-team playoff." On the faking injuries proposal from AFCA, Sankey says the Rules Committee should wait to make a decision until April-June and explore other options; however, he’s not against the proposal. (link)

Blueprint Sports will acquire Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports the two companies will operate under the Blueprint name. Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine: “For me, it was [about] get smart people together in a room, take the best of both worlds, have 70 partners across the country -- which is a pretty formidable number -- and then expand on that.” The merger will now operate 70 collectives that delivered over $108M in payments in 2024. Portnoy adding: “The company is positioning itself to have a more significant impact beyond collectives in providing technology and data solutions centered on revenue, salary caps and more in anticipation of the potential approval of the proposed House settlement. […] That said, how those payments will be divvied and the further professionalization of college sports has seen companies like Blueprint and SANIL create varying solutions for schools as they prepare to work under a de facto salary cap. Blueprint, for example, is in the process of expanding its basketball-centric solution that integrates data collected through myriad deals that have been cut in recent years to inform coaches and programs on player value, allowing more informed financial decision-making.” (link)

The MAC Council of Student-Athletes sent a letter to Congress specifying that they do not want to be classified as employees. From the letter: “If student-athletes were classified as employees, the focus could shift away from academics, leading to questions about whether attending classes or pursuing a degree would even be required. This is fundamentally at odds with the current student-athlete experience, where, for the vast majority of student-athletes at all levels of the NCAA, the goal is to earn a degree while competing in college athletics. Stripping away these benefits would hinder student-athletes’ ability to excel academically and diminish the purpose of higher education.” (link)

Old Dominion AD Wood Selig says the Monarchs will opt into the House settlement and tells the Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel: “I used to say athletes buy with their eyes, and you had to have the newest, nicest, most glamorous weight room, locker room, training room, practice venues. You had to have curb appeal. That’s no longer the case. You just have to have functionality among your facilities and you need to maximize your ability to share revenue with the revenue-generating sports.” Selig also says he was surprised by how ODU’s donors have responded to the NIL era: “I thought it would be along the lines of, the older you are, the less you embrace or support this. But that’s not true. It’s the more progressive, the more competitive. Those people understand it. The more business-minded, they get it. ‘Hey, this day is here. It’s not going away. We’d better embrace it and learn how to live with it if we want be competitive. And if we want to be competitive, we need to support this or else, shut up. Either get on board or watch it unfold from the sideline.’” Selig doesn’t anticipate long-term stability in the industry anytime in the immediate future, telling Teel: “I’m not sure equilibrium hits until we’re doing collective bargaining and decide whether the athletes are, or are not, employees. That’s going to need to happen before anything truly settles itself. … It just seems like the more rules and guidelines we put in, the more (legal) trouble we get into.” (link)

+ A judge has denied the request for a temporary restraining order in Georgia baseball student-athlete Dylan Goldstein's suit, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the judge set a hearing on the preliminary injunction for Tuesday. (link)
+ U.S. District Court Judge Karen Caldwell has dismissed some federal sexual abuse and harassment claims by two former Kentucky swimmers and coaches against former HC Lars Jorgensen and the school, while allowing state law claims and Title IX allegations to move forward. According to WDRB’s Eric Crawford, Caldwell found that “some claims were filed outside of the federal one-year statute of limitations, while others were dismissed because the court determined that Jorgensen was not acting as a state official at the time of the alleged offense. The ruling keeps some claims intact under Kentucky's five-year statute of limitations for sexual offenses, allowing the case to proceed under state law.” Specifically, state civil claims of negligence, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress against Jorgensen remain. Additionally, Wildcats AD Mitch Barnhart remains a defendant on several counts, including allegations of failure to supervise. (link)

+ ESPN employees feel more insecure about the status of their jobs than at any point in the company’s history, according to bestselling author James Andrew Miller, who told The Ringer’s Bill Simmons this week: “Freud – one of his definitions of maturity is the ability to handle ambiguity. So I think there are a lot of people becoming mature. Or else they’re drinking themselves silly on the weekends. Because it used to be – you know this – particularly because ESPN’s in Bristol, Connecticut, you gotta move your ass up to Central Connecticut. You put your kids in school. Everybody’s there for 25, 30 years. I mean, if you’re at CBS Sports and you don’t like it, or you get recruited to NBC, you’re just going across town. … Those jobs aren’t as safe as they used to be. And a lot of people were having a very difficult time, particularly since some real legends were laid off during these layoffs. So I think there’s a level of insecurity, a palpable level of insecurity, Bill, that’s never been there before.” (link)

Colleges and universities across the country are implementing cost-cutting measures and hiring freezes in response to uncertainty regarding the future of federal funding. Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody points out the austerity measures aren’t limited to just smaller schools: “The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which stands to lose $30M to $35M annually under the proposed changes, adopted a hiring freeze for nonfaculty employees. That freeze comes as a recent study showed that MIT is among the nation’s 10 wealthiest universities, with an endowment valued at more than $24.5B in fiscal year 2024. Northwestern University is also making a series of cost-cutting moves, namely freezing hiring and compensation increases. While the university was already reviewing its budget model amid ‘evolving financial pressures,’ leaders announced last week that Northwestern intends to cut nonpersonnel expenses by 10% this fiscal year. University officials also expressed concerns about proposed increases to the endowment tax, which is currently 1.4%. Northwestern is also one of the nation’s wealthiest universities, with a $14.2B endowment.” Northwestern President Michael Schill in a letter to the campus community: “While the federal directives coming out of Washington, D.C., are rapidly evolving, in some cases unclear and subject to legal challenges, it is clear that Northwestern and our peer schools could suffer significant financial repercussions.” More from Moody.
