North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham addresses UNC’s conference realignment exploration dubbed the Carolina Blue matter, telling The Athletic’s Matt Baker and Brendan Marks: “We had two conference members sue the conference. You don’t know what the outcome is going to be. So just doing our due diligence of ‘What are some scenarios that could happen? And how do we best position ourselves for a future that is uncertain?’ That’s as simple as it is. … It’s not quite the Magnificent Seven, but it’s OK.” Meanwhile, Baker and Marks report the “Carolina Blue matter is now a matter for the Orange County (N.C.) Superior Court because of a public records lawsuit filed Wednesday. David McKenzie, a local lawyer whose work includes First Amendment cases, accused UNC of illegally withholding its full legal bills with Skadden – documents he had requested under public records laws. His suit also contended that vague bills UNC has released appear to be a “deliberate effort to create a misleading public-facing record.” Cunningham goes on to tell Baker and Marks that UNC never came close to engaging in legal action against the ACC, explaining that “we were in a holding pattern, but we didn’t think it was necessary for us to file.” Documents indicate that UNC was engaged with Skadden through at least November, but Cunningham says he doesn’t know whether the Tar Heels are still contracting with the firm. He does say of Skadden’s work that it was more internally focused on UNC — the school’s brand value, for instance, and its most attractive qualities should future realignment occur — than surveying the larger landscape. North Dakota AD Bill Chaves has released a statement on the House settlement that reads, in part: “Here's the odd part: The NCAA is requiring that we declare whether we plan to opt in by March 1, while the lawsuit's settlement will not occur until April 7. Here's the other odd part: Schools such as UND had no voice in the settlement, yet we would still have to pay damages, whether we ‘opt in’ or not. Today we indicated to the NCAA our intent not to opt in at this time. We believe this is the most responsible course of action, as the lawsuit has not yet been settled, and all the conditions are not yet known. Of course, we will revisit this decision at this time next year or post the settlement decision on April 7th. … The NCAA proclaims student-athletes will receive ‘extra benefits’ if a university ‘opts in.’ This may be the case for some, but in the aggregate and if you consider the roster limits for all sports, this settlement might actually harm sports and student-athlete participation at UND as well as other student-athletes around the country. Further, if one asks the right questions, you may actually discover that schools such as UND might be supporting student-athletes in a greater way financially than some ‘opt in’ schools. Without any input from member institutions, the NCAA made another curious decision recently (February 12th). Schools that compete across multiple divisions (DI, DII and DIII) are now allowed to ‘opt in’ to their specific Division I sports on a program-by-program basis. This decision gives these schools a special status and benefit that are not conferred to broad-based Division I programs like UND. … Sponsoring broad-based programming is a long-valued tenant of the NCAA that is being trampled on by this decision.” (link)

Syracuse has launched Champion 'CUSE: The Campaign for Syracuse Athletics, a $50M fundraising effort that will focus on “attracting and retaining champion-caliber student-athletes while ensuring they have access to best-in-class resources, facilities and the training needed to perform and excel at the highest levels.” Orange AD John Wildhack: “College athletics is evolving at warp speed, but one thing remains the same: Syracuse Athletics will continue to cultivate outstanding student-athletes who win championships, succeed in the classroom and contribute meaningfully to our campus, their communities and society." Arizona is implementing a Competitive Fee for season tickets for 2025-26, including a $50 fee for each football and men’s basketball season ticket and a $25 fee for women’s basketball, baseball and softball. A note from the athletic department also indicates the Wildcats have “reduced expenses in other areas, renegotiated vendor contracts, worked aggressively on securing corporate sponsorships, restructured the department’s debt and reimagined our philanthropic initiatives.” (link)

The SEC appears to be inching closer to a nine-game football slate, particularly if the league secures four AQs to the College Football Playoff, according to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey yesterday indicated there is a “lot of interest” in going to nine games as some schools who were against it have changed their minds. “I think people change. Positions change. There’s been a lot of phone calls in advance of the meeting: ‘What are you thinking? What do we need to look at? Are there different ways to form this?’” On the media side, Emerson notes there are a few reasons ESPN may be willing to increase its payout to the league for the additional conference game: “The situation with the ACC appears to be stabilizing, so there’s some certainty there. Then there’s the CFP contract, which ESPN agreed to in March 2024, going through the 2031 season. Perhaps more importantly, there are the ratings from the 2024 season. … The SEC had six of the 10 highest-rated non-Playoff games, and 15 of the 21 highest-rated games involved at least one SEC team. If the SEC goes to a nine-game schedule, certain rivalries will continue to be played every year.” Asked when the league ultimately needs to decide whether it will add a ninth game, Sankey replied: “Right before we send out the press release.” (link)

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is seeking a temporary restraining order against the NCAA, claiming its new policy that prevents biological men from participating in women's sports attempts to circumvent President Donald Trump’s executive order. Paxton: "The NCAA's sleight of hand is designed to intentionally deceive consumers into believing that biological men are no longer allowed to participate in women's sports. Far from aligning with President Trump's executive order or basic reality, the NCAA's new policy treats sex as a changeable characteristic determined by a birth certificate instead of biology. I am asking the court to enjoin the NCAA from continuing these deceptive schemes and protect women's sports." Outkick’s Armando Salguero: “Granting the TRO could put pressure on the NCAA to answer questions as to why it claims to abide with the President's Executive Order when, in fact, biological men can continue participating in women's sports as long as they simply change the sex on their birth certificate.” (link)

Illinois is the latest state to consider legislation that would exempt student-athletes’ NIL compensation from income taxes. Representative Travis Weaver (R-93), the bill’s sponsor, tells CBS’ Richard Johnson: "The nice thing about this is it's not existing revenue, which I think makes it a lot easier. It's hard to cut a tax when it's something that you have been collecting and it's baked into your budget, whereas this, we've never been taxing, NIL [income], not to mention that there hasn't really been any, right? … The reality is, we're going to collect more tax revenue when Illinois football is successful. We're going to sell a heck of a lot more tee shirts and baseball caps, and we're going to have more people staying in our hotels, and they go to the U of I for games. So I think we’ve got to continue to be competitive in sports, and we've got to keep up with what other states are doing." James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes bills like these may face hurdles before being signed into law: "To me, [these bills are] the definition of special interest and shows just how important college sports are as a whole. … It doesn't include other college students who are earning an income. It doesn't include other influencers that are using their name, image and likeness. [The Georgia bill] doesn't include NFL players that are either playing for the Falcons or playing against the Falcons and the Jock tax that they're charged. So it's just very specific." (link)

So Long Spring Games…
+ Texas will not have a spring football game this year, and Longhorns HC Steve Sarkisian explains that part of the reason is because the team has played 30 games over the past two seasons. Additionally, this year’s team has a lot of young players, “so the development that’s needed for these guys to get ready for the fall is a little bit different than it used to be. So our approach is going to be a little bit more NFL-driven, kind of more of an OTA style early on, and as we grow into more of the scrimmage formats in the second half of spring ball, I just don't know if rolling the ball out and playing the game when we only get 15 practices is the best for us to maximize the opportunities that we get.” (link)
+ UCF is also unlikely to play a spring game, according to Knights Senior Assoc. AD for Brand Communications Adam Widman, who explains: "Given our current stadium construction, we are exploring other options. There will be some scrimmages that will be open to the public. Our goal is to give fans the opportunity for more of an in-depth look at the team via these open practices. … This enables fans to come out multiple times to watch the players practice and scrimmage. We also are opting not to broadcast our games or scrimmages, which is in line with more than half of other Big 12 schools.” (link)

Georgia is set to debut the new-look Foley Field this baseball season after completing a $45M renovation that includes a new playing surface, a high-tech pitching and hitting facility, and a new team lounge. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “You have a vision for what you want to build, and the space looked really tight and small. It was hard to appreciate it in drawings. Getting to see it in real life, up close and in person, it’s remarkable. I gave (UGA athletic staff members) Matt Brachowski and Tanner Stines a hard time saying they really underpromised and overdelivered on this one because it really kind of blew my mind of how much space they were able to create there.” The grandstand has an extended canopy to provide more shade and there is a new section for seating down the third base line, stretching down to field-level past the relocated Georgia dugout which is closer to the team’s new training facility. The SEC is talking about “reimagining” its football championship weekend into a series of play-in games to the College Football Playoff, according to The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Seth Emerson, who note the discussion includes the “somewhat radical possibility of the eighth-place team getting a chance to earn a bid by knocking out the top seed. … This isn’t the only idea, and there doesn’t yet appear a consensus. But it shows how far the conference is going to rethink championship weekend.” The Big Ten’s discussions have involved the top two teams playing for the conference title, while No. 3 would face No. 6 and No. 4 would play No. 5 in CFP play-in games. Again, nothing is finalized, but Emerson and Dochterman note there’s “potential for the games to take place on campuses or even all three in two days at one venue.” Illinois AD Josh Whitman: “One of the things that we’re going to continue to prioritize is trying to find ways to make our regular season as exciting as we possibly can. How can we keep as many fan bases engaged into November? How can we create meaningful football games in November? So, any ideas that strike at that are things that are going to be worth having conversations about.” Overall, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione says the “conversations were really creative and innovative and robust and ended up with several suggestions that we could provide our leadership, our commissioners, as they go forward with a couple of key meetings in the next couple weeks.” (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich with more reporting on yesterday’s meetings in New Orleans as Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti reiterates on the College Football Playoff front: “We're in favor of going to a straight seeding, where there's no difference between rankings and seeding like we had this year. We're in support of that for next year.” On additional synergy across leagues: “People are working together. The work that's been done around the (House) settlement among the conferences is probably unprecedented in terms of the amount of collaboration that's required to get this right.” SEC boss Greg Sankey: “Moving forward, Tony described a methodology that was agreed to by everyone a year ago for how decisions will be made by everyone -- not dictated by us -- agreed to by everyone. We have a responsibility to use that wisely.” (link)
|
ESPN’s Pete Thamel adds forward-looking context via sources: “There's a call set for this weekend for the A4 Commissioners in advance of the CFP meetings in Dallas. There's expected to be an update of what transpired in the SEC-Big Ten meetings in New Orleans and potential steps ahead for the CFP. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey made clear today that he wanted to share with colleagues potential next steps for the CFP in 2026 and beyond before articulating them publicly.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork is in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff, explaining that “we're just at a time where you have to put everything on the table to really capitalize on the moment in college [athletics]. If we're sharing revenue with the athletes, which is the right thing to do, how do we produce more content? How do we have more high-level matchups? Clearly, the viewership and the CFP people want to watch these games and they want high-level matchups, so I think we owe it to the game. We owe it to our athletes to say, ‘Can we have more content?' And more content means more games. So is that 14 (teams)? Is that 16? I don't know what the right number is. I think there's a lot of different models that we've studied. Clearly, the Big Ten and the SEC were at the forefront. We had the biggest brands. But we also need to protect the game of college football to make sure that it's accessible for as many people that can really live in this world as possible. So I'm for expansion again.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake starts his tour of the new Pac-12 at Boise State, where Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey calls the financial comparison between Boise and Oregon “apples and chainsaws.” While doing more with less has long been a point of pride for the Broncos, Dickey acknowledges that “we’ve got to find a way to do more.” Canzano recalls how Boise State began building its football brand by playing on Friday nights, something former WAC/MAC/Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson notes was “taboo” at the time. However, the community got behind the idea, and “Gene Bleymaier, the school’s former athletic director, opened the home football stadium — blue turf and all — to the region’s high schools. He invited them to play Saturday games in Bronco Stadium. It was a brilliant strategy that united the community and resulted in a full stadium for those once-unthinkable Friday night games.” Benson adds: “Once they figured out they could fill the stadium and pick up a $100K inconvenience fee, it was on.” More: “Fall enrollment: 27,250. That’s a 13 percent increase since 2020. Jeremiah Shinn, the vice president of enrollment at Boise State, told me that in-state students represent a large portion of the spike. There was also a 66 percent spike in out-of-state residents since 2014. This is a campus that is growing while other universities are facing enrollment crisis.” (link)

Rider AD Don Harnum discusses the addition of alcohol sales at men’s basketball games this season: “What we are trying to do is create a better fan experience and to get people here early so they can eat, have a beer. … We are trying to do it in our facility and create a more pre-game vibe, excitement and connection to the program and make the game more of a big-time event for people. … it’s a 7 o’clock game, maybe they can meet there at 5:30 and have something to eat and a beer. It’s nothing too elaborate but we are just trying to make it a friendly gathering place.” Right now, alcohol is only available for men’s hoops games, but Harnum says it could be offered at women’s sports and wrestling contests depending on crowd size. “Until we have some teams that are going to draw at least 1,000 it probably won’t be worth our vendors’ time to come and set up.” (link)

More on Blueprint Sports’ acquisition of Student Athlete NIL (SANIL). Financial terms were not disclosed, but the companies combined raised and delivered more than $108M in NIL payments to student-athletes across 70 athletic departments in 2024. The newly merged company will operate under the Blueprint banner, and SANIL CEO Chris Brown will take over as Blueprint’s COO. Blueprint CEO Rob Sine: “Both companies have experienced tremendous transformations to remain agile over the past four years. The new leadership team that SANIL has assembled in the last eight months and their substantial investment in technology made this acquisition an exciting opportunity for us. This move will enable us to unify the brightest minds and offer the most innovative solutions and top-tier NIL and data services to generate revenue and empower the next generation of college athletic departments and conferences.” Brown adds: “As we started to grow, build tech, build data, analyze data, we knew the logical solution to meet the needs of our clients was to partner with somebody at scale. Now we have a big tech platform, a national infrastructure to meet the needs of advertisers and brands and then data that will help to help our clients with future decision making, and be able to look at that data and predict how much money they’re going to need to deploy.” (link, link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines how Pathway Sports and Entertainment’s foray into licensing could spur meaningful change to student-athletes, schools, consumers and the video game industry itself, noting that the company’s “early licensing agreements would pay athletes $1,500 in upfront cash, while also creating new arrangements with video game publishers, allowing for athletes to receive royalty payments and participate in some of the ‘upside’ that is currently available to schools.” Regarding that upside, Brown reports licensing revenue breakdowns obtained via open records requests showed multiple schools earning “well above and beyond their initial licensing projections (i.e, schools that projected five-figure licensing fees were instead paid north of $200,000)” for EA College Football 25. Pathway Founder Casey Schwab tells Brown: “I want to be clear that this isn’t about securing just a one-time, short-term increase in cash.” Rather, he added, the focus was on creating new and sustainable frameworks for all parties involved. Pathway, Schwab says, is eyeing a future where the likenesses of college and professional football players are joined, which would allow video game publishers to more easily use (and pay for) those likeness rights across multiple titles. Illinois AD Josh Whitman on how Pathway’s model could benefit schools: “As college athletics continues its rapid pace of change, programs are looking for partners to provide market-based resources and national visibility to their student-athletes. … [Schwab] and the Pathway team are creating enhanced opportunities for our football student-athletes, which, by extension, is a win for our football program as well." Seton Hall is suing former President Joseph Nyre, who sued the university last year for alleged breach of contract and retaliation, among other accusations. In its suit, the university accuses Nyre of “illicitly accessing, downloading, maintaining, and later disseminating confidential and proprietary documents, as well as documents protected by the attorney-client and work product privileges, and information after his departure as President of the University.” Those documents led to critical reports about the university’s current president, Monsignor Joseph Reilly, in outlets such as Politico. With 1.5 seconds left and a 110-98 lead over Alabama, Missouri Men’s Basketball HC Dennis Gates called a time out, walked to the scorers table to get on the mic and tell the crowd “Do not rush the court!” He was promptly booed. In his post game press conference, Gates added: “We need that money to go to NIL (name, image and likeness). We don’t need to be getting fines out there.” Had Missouri fans rushed the floor, the Tigers would have incurred a $500K fine, which would have taken the basketball team’s fines to $750K for the season as fans stormed the court when MU beat Kansas earlier this year. USC will not host a spring football game this year, per the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, who adds “The decision to not have a traditional game w/ fans in attendance, I’m told, is another change brought upon by the evolving college football landscape. … Spring practices at USC will remain closed to the public.
