The NCAA Board of Governors yesterday encouraged the DI Board of Directors to move forward with the division's holistic student-athlete model and recommended that President Baker continue exploring how best to include DII and DIII in a post-eligibility health care model. The board also discussed a newly established executive committee to promote more effective and efficient governance and establish a competitive compensation program for NCAA executive staff. The committee can also conduct business in between regularly scheduled meetings of the full board and is authorized to initiate and settle litigation. Also, CMO Hainline provided an update on the work of the Mental Health Advisory Group, which is reviewing and recommending updates to the NCAA's best practices documents and other relevant mental health materials. It is on track to submit recommendations to the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports for review in June with a final document ready for board approval at its meeting during the 2024 Convention. + The NCAA voices its opposition to the California bill which seeks to codify student-athletes’ rights to share revenue with their schools. NCAA SVP of External Affairs Buckley tells USA Today’s Berkowitz that “the NCAA believes the California legislation is the wrong solution at the wrong time. It will only further complicate an already murky picture while we’re working with Congress to create a uniform playing field in this space. I think we will see something emerge on the Senate side. Another state law at this time is not the right fix.” Buckley said he could not provide any details about when a Senate proposal would be made and by whom it would be made.

+ On the topic of a new national study on sports gambling, the NCAA tells On3’s Prisbell that President Baker “initiated a new survey to gather the latest data as quickly as possible” but when asked about specifics, the association noted that research being conducted is “general polling” of 18- to 22-year-old college students regarding their gambling behaviors and is not polling confined only to student-athletes.” Asked for a timetable of when the survey might be complete, the NCAA spokesperson told Prisbell: “We will provide more information at a later date.” (link)

Central Washington puts out a press release that does not equivocate on the future of its FB program: “A peer institution in the Lone Star Conference has decided to discontinue its football program due to the challenges of its geographic location. But Central Washington University is fortunate to have a more advantageous location, and we will continue our historical commitment to Wildcat football. CWU is committed to supporting this program and the student-athletes who have chosen to continue their playing careers in Ellensburg. Wildcat football plays a vital role at the university and in our community, and we plan to extend those connections for many years to come.” AD Francois: “Football at Central Washington University serves as a catalyst for our entire department and has a long history of fostering a strong sense of pride and affinity in our student body, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. The Eastern New Mexico News reports that Eastern New Mexico concludes “no findings of an abusive nature” from an investigation into its WBB program. In regards to questions from The News regarding massages received by student-athletes, the ENMU statement also said the investigation was related to “the use of volunteer services” and there were no findings “that any ENMU employee forced student-athletes to seek volunteer services.” After dismissing HC de los Reyes last week, ENMU released a statement yesterday that asserted: “As this may turn into a legal matter, this will be our only comment on the situation.” Yesterday’s statement further read: “We did identify opportunities to improve training practices and internal policies with regards to volunteers and volunteer services. Upon receiving the initial complaint on this matter, ENMU instructed the volunteer to cease any continued services with student-athletes. During the investigation the student-athletes were given contact information for various resources including law enforcement.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect President/Co-Founder Turner talks with SBJ about hiring trends in college athletics. Turner points to turnover as a prominent trend with the industry continuing to lose talented professionals to opportunities outside college athletics. “I’m worried about what that’s going to mean for the ADs and the future leaders over the next 10 to 15 years if we don’t react and evolve in the way we treat our employees. It’s not just compensation, but also quality of life.” Turner says Connect now has 8,000 administrators on the platform with 35 athletic departments using it for administrative talent identification purposes. During his time as head coach, he has inspired, motivated and educated an entire generation of outstanding students. A growing number of HBCUs are leveraging their increasing popularity to add sports “beyond the more typical offerings of football, basketball and track and field,” the AP’s Brunt observes, adding that the AP reached out to 46 DI and DII HBCUs and five conference offices about the trend over the past decade. Of those, 20 schools responded and said they have added “at least 42 NCAA championship or emerging sports since 2016, including at least 32 sports since 2020 alone.” Three of the newly added sports were track and field, two were football and none were basketball. Central State M&W VB HC Brockman: “I just think that the importance of diversity and representation in sports in general needs to increase and improve, and so to see increasing and improvement overall in men’s volleyball specifically is phenomenal. It just really shows that minorities in general, especially Black athletes, can participate in predominantly white sports and be just as successful and be supported equally.” (link)

The DII MSOC Committee issues a misconduct reprimand to three Barry student-athletes for their actions – including making contact with members of the officiating crew, event staff and an opposing student-athlete, and making inappropriate and derogatory comments – after the team's loss in the semifinals of the 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship. Penalties include public reprimand and fine equal to per diem earned by the trio during the DII Fall Championships Festival. (link)
