Former NBAPA Executive Director Michele Roberts has co-written a letter to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken expressing concern about the House settlement. “Broadly, we believe the settlement produces a newer version of an old status quo where athletes have more money but no more power. Specifically, we question whether the settlement meets Rule 23 requirements because it: (1) imposes a revenue-sharing cap that may be unlawful, (2) acts as a collective bargaining agreement without including the laborers in the negotiations, (3) impedes, rather than promotes, future collective bargaining for athletes (with employee status and protectable rights under the National Labor Relations Act), (4) may lead to federal legislation that makes Defendants’ regulatory authority unchallengeable and permanently impairs athletes’ rights, (5) preserves and extends the NCAA’s amateurism-based regulatory authority, (6) uses Carter’s pay-for-play claims to serve primarily strategic purposes rather than genuine compensatory purposes, and (7) unfairly excludes Division I men’s basketball players from class representation.” (link, link – full letter)

Samford AD Martin Newton joins NCAA correspondent Andy Katz to discuss what he looks for when selecting teams for the NCAA Tournament as a member of the Men’s Basketball Committee. “What I try to focus on as much as anything is the full body work. What have they done from the minute the season opened until the end of the season? … The other thing I think is very important for me is who they try to play. Did they play a cupcake non-conference schedule or did they try to play people in the non-conference, again, to get ready for the tournament?” Newton also explains that “I'm a believer that experience [and] guards take you a long way in the tournament, so when I'm watching games I'm trying to watch – are they guard-driven? Are they senior-driven or do they have experience? Now in this day and age of the transfer portal, there's a lot of seniors, but it doesn't necessarily mean they’ve played together.” Newton notes the metrics are “very important, but if the metrics are the only thing that's important, you don't need the 12 of us in the committee. You’ve got to be able to watch a lot of basketball, so again that's why I go back to what I said earlier: having the passion for the game is really important because you’re going to watch a lot of basketball.” (link)

Gonzaga AD Chris Standiford joins KHQ News to discuss the changes in the industry and acknowledges that redistributing revenue to include student-athletes is “going to have impacts on some of [the] experiences that other student-athletes are having. So those of us that are in the industry, that's what we're grappling with is how do we create and protect the authentic Olympic experience of a lot of our student-athletes while we evolve? Unfortunately, we had an opportunity over 20 years to evolve and instead we're seeing a really radical change in a short period of time, and frankly, we haven't done a great job of adapting.” Standiford goes on to note that “we’re at a point now where how do we connect our mission to that experience through NIL? How do we create opportunities for the personal brand of our student-athletes to be able to give back to the community in real time or participate in maybe their own promotion and at the same time moving forward a great non-profit cause?” (link)

Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb talks with the Times-Herald’s Clay Neely about changes occurring in the industry and calls the legal battles a “real threat,” adding: “We’re controlled right now by lawsuits.” Cobb also points out a “lot of longtime donors will struggle with this shift” to revenue-sharing. “They’ll say, ‘I want to get to know this kid before I donate.’ But that’s not how it works anymore. This is the reality we live in. … We’ve had to rethink our budget. We’ve cut positions, left others unfilled and, frankly, we’re out here trying to secure funding like everyone else.” As far as how the role of an AD has changed, Cobb notes it “used to be that if you could generate revenue or coach or had NCAA compliance experience, you were a strong candidate. Now having a legal background is just as important. … We’re seeing a model where major investments, whether through private funding or NIL collectives, can dramatically transform programs overnight. Leadership, financial backing and strategic planning are now just as important as on-field performance.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir admits the Knights “missed the mark” in communicating to some football season ticket holders about potential penalties for selling tickets on the secondary market. While the email was intended only to reach accounts who purchase season tickets with the sole intent to sell, the message was sent to 600 accounts, some of which were misidentified as brokers. “For those of you who received the email from our ticket office, I apologize for any confusion it has caused. To be clear, no season ticket holder is losing their seats or discounts. Our intent is to prioritize dedicated fans by offering upgrade opportunities to those who actively use their tickets before potential brokers, while also accommodating as many fans as possible from our 2,500-seat waitlist. As the stadium evolves, we want UCF fans in our best seats. … We have already started and will continue to contact season ticket holders who received the email to help clarify the intent or answer questions.” (link)

While it remains to be seen how Title IX will ultimately fit into a post-House governance model, The Athletic’s Justin Williams posits that “tracking how different schools value women’s sports under an approved settlement and the competitive impact that has could be revealing. Will women’s basketball or volleyball programs, for instance, have more or fewer dollars available for athlete compensation than those sports have in the current NIL era? Star athletes in the mold of Caitlin Clark, Livvy Dunne and NiJaree Canady would likely command significant revenue share resources and could still earn big paydays through traditional third-party NIL deals, but how will the settlement financially impact their teammates? The concern among many supporters of women’s college athletics is that overall, the revenue share arms race in football and men’s basketball and further professionalization of college sports will lead to diminished resources on the women’s side.” As schools by and large seem to be proceeding with a split that heavily favors football, Church Church Hittle Antrim Partner Paia LaPalombara cautions: “Campuses should be thinking through Title IX implications, because federal litigation will always be a possibility. It’s going to be more of an institutional issue and have less to do with the overall settlement agreement.” (link)

NIL Daily’s Noah Henderson notes that with Georgia Asst. AD of NIL and Strategic Initiatives Tanner Potts taking over as CEO of the UGA-focused Classic City Collective, it’s likely the collective will “operate much differently in 2025, focusing more on legitimate brand partnerships than booster fundraising for NIL payments. Many collectives, especially independently operated ones like Classic City Collective, have integrated local businesses into their current NIL revenue generation pipelines. Georgia's existing infrastructure and connections of Classic City Collective still provide utility in the revenue-sharing era by facilitating bona fide brand deals. Tasking someone like Potts with this function indicates that the Bulldogs feel this could be a major differentiator in recruiting success.” Henderson adds that schools who have folded their collectives and/or brought most of those functions in-house are not necessarily doing so because above-cap NIL is intractable. Rather, “there is no correct answer regarding how to proceed. Every athletics department is looking for the best way to spend its resources to compete for championships. For some, that means expanding brand partnerships to grow their total NIL budget. For others, investing in professional front-office personnel to ensure that every dollar spent on athlete payments is allocated efficiently has taken precedence.” (link)

Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel and Ross Dellenger and Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde share their thoughts on the Big Ten and SEC’s designs for the College Football Playoff, and Forde remarks: “The coaches are all screaming for it for job security and bonuses, the ADs are just grubbing for money, the commissioners are grubbing right there along with them.” With four AQs, it’s possible the SEC and Big Ten would exempt their two top-ranked teams from conference championships, instead pitting the third- and sixth-ranked teams and the fourth- and fifth-ranked teams against one another respectively for the final two spots, thereby removing the subjectivity from the process. Forde adds: “Here's what we would have had if we tried to go three against six and four against five in the SEC: We would have had a one, two, three, four, five, six-way tie for fourth. Good luck figuring that out. There might be some subjectivity involved in deciding who’s four, five and six. … The other thing, because you’re playing such wildly disparate, different schedules because your leagues are too big, good luck breaking the ties.” Dellenger says he’s asked why teams would play big non-conference games if they really don’t matter anymore and was told that’s precisely why SEC and Big Ten teams would play those games. “So we’ll get more money and they won’t impact our automatic qualification, they could impact our seeding in the playoff, but that’s the response.” Forde subsequently contends teams will still want home games. “They want seven to eight home games. They’re not going to be playing more games where you have to go home-and-home.” Full pod. (link)

Now live on Connect: RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick sits down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2025 NCAA Convention and touches on some of the latest findings with sports gambling and hazing and how RealResponse provides tools to support student-athletes and administrators. Chadwick also discusses a recent fan feedback expansion study with Clemson: “We have always focused on how do we promote the voice of people that have opinions and feedback? For a long time…that's been student-athletes, and as we looked at the next opportunity for expansion, especially in light of everything happening in college athletics right now, there is going to be a greater emphasis than perhaps ever on the fan experience, the donor experience, the people that are frankly giving and paying money to come experience the end product of what is college athletics. So as we looked at the next frontier of our company, we saw that fan/donor feedback experience as an obvious expansion. … What I've loved seeing is the schools ability to engage with their fans in a more real way. It’s not just a survey that’s mass sent out after a large football game…it’s much more of a personal touch.” (link)

Mississippi State fans rushed the court last night after beating Texas A&M, but waited patiently for nearly a minute for the hand shake line process and teams to exit the court. Per SEC Associate Commissioner of Communications Herb Vincent, the Bulldogs “successfully avoided an SEC fine for court rushing on Tuesday night by delaying their court rush until the Texas A&M team and game officials were off the court.” (link, link)

SWAC Commissioner Charles McClelland, MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills, SIAC (DII) Commissioner Anthony Holloman and CIAA (DII) Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams sent a letter to the members of the Congressional Black Caucus urging them to take action to protect the future of HBCU athletics. A primary concern involves student-athlete employment, and the commissioners argue that, unlike major athletic programs, most HBCUs do not generate significant revenue from sports and rely on institutional funding. If student-athletes were reclassified as employees, it could force many HBCU programs to cut sports entirely, eliminating opportunities for student-athletes. The commissioners also highlight the disparities caused by varying state laws affecting NIL. From the letter: “While there have been historic changes recently in collegiate sports to support student-athletes overall, opportunities for our predominantly Black students at our institutions are at risk. Pending regulatory decisions and litigation threaten to change the face of college sports devoid of our input and, more importantly, without the voices of our student athletes, administrators and us as commissioners leading our conferences being considered. To ensure that college sports broadly – and HBCU sports especially – can continue to thrive, it’s essential that Congress allow for consistent and nimble national governance and affirm that student-athletes are not designated as employees of their universities.” Full letter. A group of 120 active women’s basketball student-athletes have formed a players association and joined the United College Athletes Association, a non-profit organization that the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty points out is not a union. In late January, the players sent separate letters to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti requesting a meeting to discuss a potential partnership for rulemaking and related matters, and Dougherty notes both leagues refused to meet. Petitti in his response wrote: “Given the personal relationships on campus, we encourage athletes to communicate directly with their coaches and athletic staff, who then coordinate on issues of concern with the Conference.” USC student-athlete Dominique Darius found the response unsatisfactory: “My issue with that is my coach does not have the power to negotiate on revenue-sharing, for example, with the whole institution of the NCAA. … So telling us to talk to our coaches is just a misdirect of like, ‘Okay, just go ahead and go over there while we make all this money and you sit over there and try to get ran in circles by your coach,’ thinking that’s productive when it’s really not. And I think that’s scary because they are trying to say that we’re not valued.” Oklahoma student-athlete Raegan Beers adds: “Obviously there are a lot of issues we could address: safety, academics, compensation, all those things. But in the end, it comes down to that we just want to have a voice. We don’t have that right now. That’s the first step, and those things can be addressed when that happens.” (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich previews what’s likely to occur during next week’s College Football Playoff Management Committee meeting and is told by one source: "I would imagine that coming out of that Big Ten-SEC meeting that they will come to the table with proposed governance, proposed format – all of that. I think that's everybody's expectation, but I don't expect anything radical that hasn't already been discussed." A Big Ten source adds: "We've got to figure out a way to get to 14 or 16. We've got to get four automatics. We've got to get the Big 12 and ACC to join in. That's the goal." On that topic, an ACC source remarks: "It does become a little bit of an invitational. Will there be circumstances where a Big 12 or ACC might have three really good and deserving teams to come in and all of a sudden these spots are taken up through other teams from the SEC or the Big Ten? That's a difficult one. I also understand that who has the gold makes a little bit of the rules, right?" Regarding the possibility of having more on-campus CFP games, an SEC source tells Dinich: "I don't think anybody wants to kill the major bowls on their watch, especially when they've not only been good for college football historically, but think about what they've had to accept and embrace when it is so different from what they are used to." In discussing the overall power dynamic with the SEC and Big Ten charting the course, a Big 12 source says: "It's so unfortunate that we believe we have to continue to look out for our self-interests. Who is looking out for the greater good of college athletics and college football in particular? If the discussions between the Big Ten and the SEC can bring ideas to the table that are going to look out for the greater good, then that's great. They should be discussed and brought forward. But is that what's really happening?" (link)

Richmond is expected to opt into the House settlement’s revenue-sharing component, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor, who adds: “UR has invested too much in its flagship sport to proceed in any other direction, which would essentially equate to de-emphasis. Richmond's determination to remain in the Atlantic 10 Conference may not apply to league membership across the board, this year or in future years. The composition of the 14-school league (Massachusetts, currently the 15th school, leaves in July for the MAC) could change in response to revenue sharing, which at the A-10 level may be too expensive for some members.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione is calling on fans to help the Sooners reckon with revenue-sharing and writes: "Oklahoma is planning to share the maximum allowed annual revenue, amounting to $20.5M beginning July 1, 2025. … The reality of a new $20.5M expense that will increase annually requires us to make thoughtful decisions around how we drive new revenue while considering changes to our current investments. Like our peers across the country, we're looking at everything from reallocating existing funds for the purpose of revenue sharing, to evaluating future ticket pricing and premium offerings across all sports." Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard shares the first preview of what the CyTown project will look like and notes the 94-acre site already has five “entertainment-type buildings.” ISU will add eight additional buildings encompassing roughly 575K square feet of vertical space, including a 200-room hotel, 60 resident suites that donors can lease from the university, 70K square feet of retail space, 90K square feet of office space and the 3K-seat Cylo amphitheater. Construction will begin this year and the goal is to have CyTown “up and running” by the fall of 2027. More from Pollard, including renderings for each facility. (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini says ASU is “prepared to make an announcement in a couple months” about a significant renovation to Desert Financial Arena. “We’ve heard a lot of feedback from our fans and I've said this since day one: we're going to make decisions driven by fan feedback and driven by the things that allow us to enhance a game day in football and basketball and all of our sports, for that matter. And I think there's ways that we can improve Desert Financial Arena. There’s some infrastructure improvements that need to be made but we're also looking at game day and fan experience. … There are some creature comforts, there are some conveniences that it’s lacking. … We’re looking hard at how do we use several offseasons to get this thing up to code and have a great, unbelievable college basketball experience right there on the Tempe campus.” (link)

In addition to adding two football fields, Georgia’s football facility project will also include a new parking lot and a building to house a sports medicine treatment area, hydration station and another for field storage and support spaces for practice equipment. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks tells the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer: “It’s really going to be a massive improvement — not only for the way we practice and operate, but being able to add roughly 150 parking spots dedicated to football which will really be a big bonus for them. Every parking spot is so crucial on this campus.” UGA is currently in the design phase of the project, whose cost is yet to be disclosed. Plans for a new videoboard at Stegeman Coliseum have been delayed until likely the spring of 2027, and Brooks says: “It’s the next big project. As we’re entering this new world related to expenses related to NIL, we are in a great position facility-wise.” That project is expected to cost $15-20M. Regarding further upgrades to Sanford Stadium, Brooks explains: “We’re looking at that being a 5, 10, 15, 20-year plan. It may be done in small chunks, but it’s all going to build off of each other where everything is going to be part of a coordinated plan.” (link)

Also from Athens, Georgia baseball student-athlete Dylan Goldstein has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA seeking an additional year of eligibility on the grounds that his year at a junior college should not count towards his eligibility. Goldstein is seeking a preliminary injunction and a hearing so he can return to playing for Georgia this weekend. From the suit: “Dylan and multiple representatives, on his behalf, have contacted the NCAA. The NCAA will not take or return calls or other communications. The NCAA has intentionally failed and refused to approve or disapprove the request. They lacked the courage, character, professionalism, or even common courtesy to respond.” (link)

The New Mexico Senate Education Committee gave an 8-1 “do-pass” recommendation to move forward on Senate Bill 268 on Monday, which would allocate $2.5M each to the New Mexico and New Mexico State athletic departments. The bill, which was amended to change its original purpose of funding NIL, now goes to the Senate Finance Committee, where it will be discussed then tabled and forgotten or added to House Bill 2, the state budget. Northern Illinois has launched the new Huskie Athletic Fund (HAF) annual membership and 2025 football season ticket sales. Prices remain unchanged from last year and the new HAF membership structure provides a package of benefits to each donor based on their annual donation level. Huskies AD Sean Frazier: "This is a critical time for NIU Athletics as we navigate the changes in college athletics while continuing to provide Huskie student-athletes with support needed to succeed athletically and academically. Building UP the annual fund and growing our revenue base while ensuring that our donors and season ticket members enjoy a great gameday experience at NIU remains a priority. We firmly believe this new benefit structure will help us to accomplish those goals." (link)

UTSA announces a new football season ticket pricing model by which all seating areas will see an average 8% increase. New season tickets start at $105. Additionally, UTSA is introducing two new exclusive benefits for season-ticket holders. For the first time, there will be a designated season-ticket-holder-only entrance through Gate 3 of the Alamodome. There will also be dedicated concession stands on the plaza level that will provide priority access to season-ticket holders. (link)
