Delaware AD Chrissi Rawak will depart to become the next President/CEO at USA Swimming. Rawak talks with Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde about her appointment: “I never in a million years imagined this would be an opportunity that I would have. The experiences that I have had leading organizations and building organizations, and then certainly the passion I have and the love I have for this incredible sport—full-circle moment is absolutely a phrase I’ve used to describe it.” Rawak goes on to note that being “unprecedentedly successful [in 2028] is going to be really important for us, and something that I’m confident in. I know we have brilliant coaches across this country. I know we have athletes that are committed to being exceptional, and my responsibility is, number one, hire a national team managing director to help really lead that initiative and partnership with me. … We're all recognizing the incredible importance of the Olympics on home soil and what that does for us. But for me, it's about what are we doing to lead up to that? But there's no doubt that our success in L.A. is critically important.” Senior Deputy AD for Revenue Generation and Sport Administration Jordan Skolnick will serve as Interim AD for the Blue Hens. Glenn Walters: “I am excited that Art Chase is returning to The Citadel to lead our athletic teams after 25 years at Duke University. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey declined to discuss particulars around any future College Football Playoff formats after today’s league meeting with the Big Ten, “citing the fact that the SEC and Big Ten first ‘owe’ the other commissioners their thoughts before sharing publicly,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti both indicated they are in favor of changing the seeding for the 2025 playoff, and Dellenger notes they want seeding based directly on the rankings without automatic byes for conference champions. Also from Dellenger: “SEC ADs & coaches did discuss the potential of moving to nine conference games both Monday and Tuesday. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says they have not made a decision but it does sound like several people in the room, at first against nine games, are re-thinking their position. … While nothing was decided in meetings this week, the SEC and Big Ten continue to deeply discuss an expanded, multi-AQ format, and the SEC - as Greg Sankey suggested today - is closer than ever, perhaps, in moving to nine conference games.” Sankey says of thinking about the rest of college sports when making decisions: "If I was just representing the SEC, we'd still have a four-team playoff." On the faking injuries proposal from AFCA, Sankey says the Rules Committee should wait to make a decision until April-June and explore other options; however, he’s not against the proposal. (link)

Blueprint Sports will acquire Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports the two companies will operate under the Blueprint name. Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine: “For me, it was [about] get smart people together in a room, take the best of both worlds, have 70 partners across the country -- which is a pretty formidable number -- and then expand on that.” The merger will now operate 70 collectives that delivered over $108M in payments in 2024. Portnoy adding: “The company is positioning itself to have a more significant impact beyond collectives in providing technology and data solutions centered on revenue, salary caps and more in anticipation of the potential approval of the proposed House settlement. […] That said, how those payments will be divvied and the further professionalization of college sports has seen companies like Blueprint and SANIL create varying solutions for schools as they prepare to work under a de facto salary cap. Blueprint, for example, is in the process of expanding its basketball-centric solution that integrates data collected through myriad deals that have been cut in recent years to inform coaches and programs on player value, allowing more informed financial decision-making.” (link)

The MAC Council of Student-Athletes sent a letter to Congress specifying that they do not want to be classified as employees. From the letter: “If student-athletes were classified as employees, the focus could shift away from academics, leading to questions about whether attending classes or pursuing a degree would even be required. This is fundamentally at odds with the current student-athlete experience, where, for the vast majority of student-athletes at all levels of the NCAA, the goal is to earn a degree while competing in college athletics. Stripping away these benefits would hinder student-athletes’ ability to excel academically and diminish the purpose of higher education.” (link)

Old Dominion AD Wood Selig says the Monarchs will opt into the House settlement and tells the Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel: “I used to say athletes buy with their eyes, and you had to have the newest, nicest, most glamorous weight room, locker room, training room, practice venues. You had to have curb appeal. That’s no longer the case. You just have to have functionality among your facilities and you need to maximize your ability to share revenue with the revenue-generating sports.” Selig also says he was surprised by how ODU’s donors have responded to the NIL era: “I thought it would be along the lines of, the older you are, the less you embrace or support this. But that’s not true. It’s the more progressive, the more competitive. Those people understand it. The more business-minded, they get it. ‘Hey, this day is here. It’s not going away. We’d better embrace it and learn how to live with it if we want be competitive. And if we want to be competitive, we need to support this or else, shut up. Either get on board or watch it unfold from the sideline.’” Selig doesn’t anticipate long-term stability in the industry anytime in the immediate future, telling Teel: “I’m not sure equilibrium hits until we’re doing collective bargaining and decide whether the athletes are, or are not, employees. That’s going to need to happen before anything truly settles itself. … It just seems like the more rules and guidelines we put in, the more (legal) trouble we get into.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ A judge has denied the request for a temporary restraining order in Georgia baseball student-athlete Dylan Goldstein's suit, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the judge set a hearing on the preliminary injunction for Tuesday. (link)
+ U.S. District Court Judge Karen Caldwell has dismissed some federal sexual abuse and harassment claims by two former Kentucky swimmers and coaches against former HC Lars Jorgensen and the school, while allowing state law claims and Title IX allegations to move forward. According to WDRB’s Eric Crawford, Caldwell found that “some claims were filed outside of the federal one-year statute of limitations, while others were dismissed because the court determined that Jorgensen was not acting as a state official at the time of the alleged offense. The ruling keeps some claims intact under Kentucky's five-year statute of limitations for sexual offenses, allowing the case to proceed under state law.” Specifically, state civil claims of negligence, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress against Jorgensen remain. Additionally, Wildcats AD Mitch Barnhart remains a defendant on several counts, including allegations of failure to supervise. (link)

+ ESPN employees feel more insecure about the status of their jobs than at any point in the company’s history, according to bestselling author James Andrew Miller, who told The Ringer’s Bill Simmons this week: “Freud – one of his definitions of maturity is the ability to handle ambiguity. So I think there are a lot of people becoming mature. Or else they’re drinking themselves silly on the weekends. Because it used to be – you know this – particularly because ESPN’s in Bristol, Connecticut, you gotta move your ass up to Central Connecticut. You put your kids in school. Everybody’s there for 25, 30 years. I mean, if you’re at CBS Sports and you don’t like it, or you get recruited to NBC, you’re just going across town. … Those jobs aren’t as safe as they used to be. And a lot of people were having a very difficult time, particularly since some real legends were laid off during these layoffs. So I think there’s a level of insecurity, a palpable level of insecurity, Bill, that’s never been there before.” (link)

Colleges and universities across the country are implementing cost-cutting measures and hiring freezes in response to uncertainty regarding the future of federal funding. Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody points out the austerity measures aren’t limited to just smaller schools: “The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which stands to lose $30M to $35M annually under the proposed changes, adopted a hiring freeze for nonfaculty employees. That freeze comes as a recent study showed that MIT is among the nation’s 10 wealthiest universities, with an endowment valued at more than $24.5B in fiscal year 2024. Northwestern University is also making a series of cost-cutting moves, namely freezing hiring and compensation increases. While the university was already reviewing its budget model amid ‘evolving financial pressures,’ leaders announced last week that Northwestern intends to cut nonpersonnel expenses by 10% this fiscal year. University officials also expressed concerns about proposed increases to the endowment tax, which is currently 1.4%. Northwestern is also one of the nation’s wealthiest universities, with a $14.2B endowment.” Northwestern President Michael Schill in a letter to the campus community: “While the federal directives coming out of Washington, D.C., are rapidly evolving, in some cases unclear and subject to legal challenges, it is clear that Northwestern and our peer schools could suffer significant financial repercussions.” More from Moody. Former NBAPA Executive Director Michele Roberts has co-written a letter to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken expressing concern about the House settlement. “Broadly, we believe the settlement produces a newer version of an old status quo where athletes have more money but no more power. Specifically, we question whether the settlement meets Rule 23 requirements because it: (1) imposes a revenue-sharing cap that may be unlawful, (2) acts as a collective bargaining agreement without including the laborers in the negotiations, (3) impedes, rather than promotes, future collective bargaining for athletes (with employee status and protectable rights under the National Labor Relations Act), (4) may lead to federal legislation that makes Defendants’ regulatory authority unchallengeable and permanently impairs athletes’ rights, (5) preserves and extends the NCAA’s amateurism-based regulatory authority, (6) uses Carter’s pay-for-play claims to serve primarily strategic purposes rather than genuine compensatory purposes, and (7) unfairly excludes Division I men’s basketball players from class representation.” (link, link – full letter)

Samford AD Martin Newton joins NCAA correspondent Andy Katz to discuss what he looks for when selecting teams for the NCAA Tournament as a member of the Men’s Basketball Committee. “What I try to focus on as much as anything is the full body work. What have they done from the minute the season opened until the end of the season? … The other thing I think is very important for me is who they try to play. Did they play a cupcake non-conference schedule or did they try to play people in the non-conference, again, to get ready for the tournament?” Newton also explains that “I'm a believer that experience [and] guards take you a long way in the tournament, so when I'm watching games I'm trying to watch – are they guard-driven? Are they senior-driven or do they have experience? Now in this day and age of the transfer portal, there's a lot of seniors, but it doesn't necessarily mean they’ve played together.” Newton notes the metrics are “very important, but if the metrics are the only thing that's important, you don't need the 12 of us in the committee. You’ve got to be able to watch a lot of basketball, so again that's why I go back to what I said earlier: having the passion for the game is really important because you’re going to watch a lot of basketball.” (link)

Gonzaga AD Chris Standiford joins KHQ News to discuss the changes in the industry and acknowledges that redistributing revenue to include student-athletes is “going to have impacts on some of [the] experiences that other student-athletes are having. So those of us that are in the industry, that's what we're grappling with is how do we create and protect the authentic Olympic experience of a lot of our student-athletes while we evolve? Unfortunately, we had an opportunity over 20 years to evolve and instead we're seeing a really radical change in a short period of time, and frankly, we haven't done a great job of adapting.” Standiford goes on to note that “we’re at a point now where how do we connect our mission to that experience through NIL? How do we create opportunities for the personal brand of our student-athletes to be able to give back to the community in real time or participate in maybe their own promotion and at the same time moving forward a great non-profit cause?” (link)

Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb talks with the Times-Herald’s Clay Neely about changes occurring in the industry and calls the legal battles a “real threat,” adding: “We’re controlled right now by lawsuits.” Cobb also points out a “lot of longtime donors will struggle with this shift” to revenue-sharing. “They’ll say, ‘I want to get to know this kid before I donate.’ But that’s not how it works anymore. This is the reality we live in. … We’ve had to rethink our budget. We’ve cut positions, left others unfilled and, frankly, we’re out here trying to secure funding like everyone else.” As far as how the role of an AD has changed, Cobb notes it “used to be that if you could generate revenue or coach or had NCAA compliance experience, you were a strong candidate. Now having a legal background is just as important. … We’re seeing a model where major investments, whether through private funding or NIL collectives, can dramatically transform programs overnight. Leadership, financial backing and strategic planning are now just as important as on-field performance.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir admits the Knights “missed the mark” in communicating to some football season ticket holders about potential penalties for selling tickets on the secondary market. While the email was intended only to reach accounts who purchase season tickets with the sole intent to sell, the message was sent to 600 accounts, some of which were misidentified as brokers. “For those of you who received the email from our ticket office, I apologize for any confusion it has caused. To be clear, no season ticket holder is losing their seats or discounts. Our intent is to prioritize dedicated fans by offering upgrade opportunities to those who actively use their tickets before potential brokers, while also accommodating as many fans as possible from our 2,500-seat waitlist. As the stadium evolves, we want UCF fans in our best seats. … We have already started and will continue to contact season ticket holders who received the email to help clarify the intent or answer questions.” (link)

While it remains to be seen how Title IX will ultimately fit into a post-House governance model, The Athletic’s Justin Williams posits that “tracking how different schools value women’s sports under an approved settlement and the competitive impact that has could be revealing. Will women’s basketball or volleyball programs, for instance, have more or fewer dollars available for athlete compensation than those sports have in the current NIL era? Star athletes in the mold of Caitlin Clark, Livvy Dunne and NiJaree Canady would likely command significant revenue share resources and could still earn big paydays through traditional third-party NIL deals, but how will the settlement financially impact their teammates? The concern among many supporters of women’s college athletics is that overall, the revenue share arms race in football and men’s basketball and further professionalization of college sports will lead to diminished resources on the women’s side.” As schools by and large seem to be proceeding with a split that heavily favors football, Church Church Hittle Antrim Partner Paia LaPalombara cautions: “Campuses should be thinking through Title IX implications, because federal litigation will always be a possibility. It’s going to be more of an institutional issue and have less to do with the overall settlement agreement.” (link)

NIL Daily’s Noah Henderson notes that with Georgia Asst. AD of NIL and Strategic Initiatives Tanner Potts taking over as CEO of the UGA-focused Classic City Collective, it’s likely the collective will “operate much differently in 2025, focusing more on legitimate brand partnerships than booster fundraising for NIL payments. Many collectives, especially independently operated ones like Classic City Collective, have integrated local businesses into their current NIL revenue generation pipelines. Georgia's existing infrastructure and connections of Classic City Collective still provide utility in the revenue-sharing era by facilitating bona fide brand deals. Tasking someone like Potts with this function indicates that the Bulldogs feel this could be a major differentiator in recruiting success.” Henderson adds that schools who have folded their collectives and/or brought most of those functions in-house are not necessarily doing so because above-cap NIL is intractable. Rather, “there is no correct answer regarding how to proceed. Every athletics department is looking for the best way to spend its resources to compete for championships. For some, that means expanding brand partnerships to grow their total NIL budget. For others, investing in professional front-office personnel to ensure that every dollar spent on athlete payments is allocated efficiently has taken precedence.” (link)

Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel and Ross Dellenger and Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde share their thoughts on the Big Ten and SEC’s designs for the College Football Playoff, and Forde remarks: “The coaches are all screaming for it for job security and bonuses, the ADs are just grubbing for money, the commissioners are grubbing right there along with them.” With four AQs, it’s possible the SEC and Big Ten would exempt their two top-ranked teams from conference championships, instead pitting the third- and sixth-ranked teams and the fourth- and fifth-ranked teams against one another respectively for the final two spots, thereby removing the subjectivity from the process. Forde adds: “Here's what we would have had if we tried to go three against six and four against five in the SEC: We would have had a one, two, three, four, five, six-way tie for fourth. Good luck figuring that out. There might be some subjectivity involved in deciding who’s four, five and six. … The other thing, because you’re playing such wildly disparate, different schedules because your leagues are too big, good luck breaking the ties.” Dellenger says he’s asked why teams would play big non-conference games if they really don’t matter anymore and was told that’s precisely why SEC and Big Ten teams would play those games. “So we’ll get more money and they won’t impact our automatic qualification, they could impact our seeding in the playoff, but that’s the response.” Forde subsequently contends teams will still want home games. “They want seven to eight home games. They’re not going to be playing more games where you have to go home-and-home.” Full pod. (link)

Now live on Connect: RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick sits down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2025 NCAA Convention and touches on some of the latest findings with sports gambling and hazing and how RealResponse provides tools to support student-athletes and administrators. Chadwick also discusses a recent fan feedback expansion study with Clemson: “We have always focused on how do we promote the voice of people that have opinions and feedback? For a long time…that's been student-athletes, and as we looked at the next opportunity for expansion, especially in light of everything happening in college athletics right now, there is going to be a greater emphasis than perhaps ever on the fan experience, the donor experience, the people that are frankly giving and paying money to come experience the end product of what is college athletics. So as we looked at the next frontier of our company, we saw that fan/donor feedback experience as an obvious expansion. … What I've loved seeing is the schools ability to engage with their fans in a more real way. It’s not just a survey that’s mass sent out after a large football game…it’s much more of a personal touch.” (link)

Mississippi State fans rushed the court last night after beating Texas A&M, but waited patiently for nearly a minute for the hand shake line process and teams to exit the court.
