Former Big Ten Commissioner Delany joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss the announcement of new Big Ten Commissioner Petitti, factors contributing to the spate of new commissioners (and a new NCAA president) who come from outside college athletics, strategic steps aspiring commissioners could take to build experience in the current landscape and more. Delany explains that media expertise is a “hirable skill,” and given the increasing importance of media rights as a revenue stream, Delany notes it makes sense that university presidents would seek leaders with that expertise. “At the same time, (SEC commissioner) Sankey and (ACC boss) Phillips are seasoned veterans who have their own experiences and really can obtain the kinds of expertise that is necessary in managing media, both the implementation and the preparation for future changes. At the NCAA level, I think Charlie Baker was a great hire. … We’re at a time where Washington matters, where legislatures matter, and he has probably as strong a set of credentials in that area as I’ve ever observed: a Republican governor in a Democratic state, elected, effective and respected.” Lots more from Delany. Rhode Island AD Bjorn in a video presentation for trustees last month highlighted the shoddy conditions of some of URI’s athletic facilities. At Meade Stadium (football & lacrosse), for instance, Bjorn noted the press box is “insufficient” and not ADA compliant while a large portion of the bleachers have had to be covered due to “fire code issues.” Bjorn also says the track is unusable as the asphalt needs to be torn out and redone. “We haven’t utilized this facility in close to 30 years. The track’s been condemned, and I have to say, our track programs are some of the most successful programs we have here.” There are additional sensitive issues at the throwing area for track & field, as well as at the softball field. “We talk a lot about the greatness, but our facilities are in such disrepair that it makes it very hard to try to attract the best possible students that can compete for us.” Board of Trustees Chair Cook: “The video is an accurate representation of the poor conditions of some of our athletic facilities and we’ve asked the state to include support for those facilities in this year’s budget.” (link)

United Athletic Conference Executive Director/Altius Sports Partners Chairman Luck to SBJ’s Smith on the unexpected ways NIL has evolved: “I didn’t expect these organized third-party companies -- some not-for-profit -- basically doing the legwork for the athletes. I thought that there would be a massive infusion of agents instead. [...] There's no transparency at all. And a real marketplace can't develop appropriately and have fair market value estimations without data. It's shocking that we're in 2023, the age of big data and, you know, we see nothing.” (link)

Now that Nebraska has sold out Memorial Stadium for a volleyball match later this year, the Omaha World-Herald’s Shatel wonders if this will be the start of a trend, pointing to Oklahoma Softball HC Gasso’s recent suggestion that her team could play in Memorial Stadium. Shatel also notes Wisconsin Volleyball HC Sheffield retweeted ESPN’s post about NU’s sellout and asked Huskers HC Cook if the Badgers, who toppled NU’s regular season attendance record last year, could be planning a rebuttal. Cook: “I have no idea. They’re going to Milwaukee (Fiserv Forum) to play a match. I’ve heard Texas wants to play in (Texas) Ranger stadium. It will be interesting to see if this gets into a (one-up) contest. I only heard from one Big Ten coach and he said, ‘This is awesome, way to go for it. You probably won’t hear from any other coaches but I just wanted to let you know this is great — great for the sport and great for the girls.’” (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect reviewed the aggregate compensation data of industry professionals to gauge pay expectations/demands in the talent market. The data comes from Connect users who have provided a salary expectation and list marketing as one of their primary responsibilities. It indicates that expectations range on average from ~$44K starting out to $143K with over 15 years of experience. Some takeaways from the data: As with development professionals, earlier-career professionals maintained similar expectations across their cohort, while the gap (and standard deviation) in salary expectations increased significantly starting with professionals with 10+ years of experience (the standard deviation between those two cohorts jumps from $26K to $46K). On average, Marketing compensation expectations appear to be approximately 11% below Development expectations, ranging from ~7% behind for those with 15+ years of experience to ~14% behind for those between one and six years of experience. Lots of interesting data here. (link)

Illinois lawmakers are considering legislation that would legalize online betting on in-state college teams. Under the current bill, bettors can only wager on those teams in person. The Chicago Tribune’s Firstenberg: “Under the bill, mobile sportsbooks could offer pre-game betting or Tier 1 wagering on the 13 schools that play Division I basketball and the seven FBS schools. Tier 1 betting is considered ‘determined solely by the final score or final outcome of the sports event and is placed before the sports event has begun,’ so things like full game spreads and totals, not props.” Speaking on behalf of those 13 schools, Illinois AD Whitman voiced opposition to the bill, arguing that colleges were not receiving enough support from the state to combat the mental health risks and online bullying associated with gambling. The center identified 38 decision points that could influence workers’ ability to land what they deemed a good job by age 30—one that pays the minimum for economic self-sufficiency, a median annual salary of $57K. The result: a bachelor’s degree made more of a difference than any other decision. Meanwhile, the majority of Americans (56%) remain skeptical about the value of a college degree, affirming that it is not worth the cost because people often graduate without specific skills and a substantial amount of debt. Auburn AD Cohen has yet to make up his mind about his preference for a conference schedule format, saying there are “so many factors that I can't explain at this point in time. There's a part of me that thinks if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's a little bit of that going on right now. But also, that ninth game is extremely important for a variety of reasons. There's a worth connected to it, and that has been defined in many different ways. … I know as a league we’ll make the right decision. The American Hockey Coaches Association discussed the idea of playing NCAA regional games at home sites, but the Grand Forks Herald’s Schlossman reports there “did not appear to be nearly enough consensus to make it happen,” as has been the case for the past 10 years. The Big Ten and NCHC were the primary supporters of the idea, but opponents cite strong regional attendance and say the home ice is too big of an advantage. Coaches also voiced their displeasure at some of the penalties called on teams that failed to leave the ice on time after pregame warmups or those who went to their goalie after the period instead of the locker room. Additionally, the Ice Hockey Rules Committee indicated it wanted to take steps to curb slew-footing, diving and embellishment. More from the AHCA meetings. (link)

More from the Bayou as Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Johns says the board received word on Friday about suspicious betting activity regarding that night’s LSU-Alabama baseball game but notes there is no reason to believe LSU was involved, nor was there cause to limit betting on college baseball in the state. Johns: “There were a couple of bets made in Cincinnati, Ohio. One was on a parlay which involved the LSU-Alabama game, and then there was another straight-up (money line) bet, I was told it was a large bet that involved LSU-Alabama." ESPN reported the bets occurred at the BetMGM sportsbook in Great American Ballpark, and Johns says both bets were on LSU to win the game. “That in itself indicates that there's definitely no suspicious activity on the part of LSU. You don't typically suspect the team that was picked to win the game. The problem would have been whether someone on the Alabama side was suspicious of activity. … And look, just because it was a suspicious activity doesn't necessarily mean there was any kind of illegal activity.” (link)

Minnesota Governor Walz indicates he will sign any sports gambling bill endorsed by the state’s tribes. Currently, a bill introduced by Representative Stephenson (D-35) has tribal support. Stephenson: “We have a robust black market here. People just use shady websites, digital workarounds and other means to place bets. That's what this bill is about … creating a legal marketplace that will displace that illicit market, and in doing so provide consumer protection and ensure the integrity of the game and limit money laundering and other illegal activity.” Stephenson also referenced the increasing number of states around Minnesota who have legalized sports betting, saying: “No Minnesotan should have to go to Iowa to have fun.” (link)
