NC State football student-athlete Corey Coley Jr. has filed a lawsuit seeking a fifth year of eligibility based in part on a raft of injuries he suffered during his four years with the Wolfpack and Maryland. Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich: “Coley is arguing in part that (1) the NCAA didn't give him proper credit for his injuries in denying his hardship waiver; (2) the NCAA's definition of a ‘season’ is arbitrary; and (3) the four-year limit is arbitrary given various exceptions like the COVID waiver. Hard to not see this one as an extension of the Fourqurean case, where the judge ripped the NCAA for not having ‘meaningful exceptions’ to the current Five-Year Rule and strongly suggested the NCAA go to a straight five seasons in five years (as has been debated).” (link)

USF AD Michael Kelly sat down with Connect's Bryan Fischer at the NCAA Convention and provided an update on USF's on-campus football stadium project, the impact of the House settlement, the next emerging sports and leading through tragedy and unexpected challenges. Kelly says of the passing of former Men’s Basketball HC Amir Abdur-Rahim: “You start with humanity first. You’ve got to support the family, and by family I mean not only his personal family, but his basketball family. And when you get that call and 45 minutes later you're in the meeting room, in the gym, consoling some stunned and some shocked young men, that's where we started. You start with them. How do you make them right and how do you then put your love in the family?  It was also a week or two coming off of a major hurricane that hit the Tampa Bay area [and] everyone kind of becomes exhausted after that. But when you just know how good of a person Amir was, how good of a coach he was, the legacy he left, you get refilled to try to make sure you continue to honor him.” Kelly also says that “within minutes of it happening, I did reach out to a mentor of mine in Ron Wellman, who I worked for at Wake Forest earlier in my career when he was the AD and he had a similar unfortunate tragedy when [former Men’s Basketball HC Skip] Prosser passed away. And it was nice to be able to reach out to him, not to tell me to do anything, but when I was dealing with my team and my staff just whatever he could remember about” handling a tragedy. While SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti largely avoided publicly discussing what plans, if any, they have for overhauling the College Football Playoff in 2026, Sankey this week explained: “We also have an interest, and I said this in December, in understanding selection committee decisions in the last few years. We have different views. We entrust them with that work, but there are domino effects from those selection decisions. Again, I’m not forming the agenda, but I’m identifying things that are regularly a part of our conversation with lots to understand. … How do we understand the function of the selection committee? Is it meeting the objectives established? How are the criteria used? You know, my members want to understand, how is strength of schedule fully evaluated in the selection room?” Petitti added: “From my perspective, how you qualify for the postseason impacts the regular season. Or how you perceive you qualify for the postseason. What factors you think are important. … I think that informs the way you think about the regular season. They’re all tied together.” The Athletic’s Ralph Russo subsequently submits that the “Big Ten and the SEC see opportunities to create still more revenue for themselves with more marquee early-season nonconference matchups and high-stakes late-season intraconference games. And since they don’t trust the selection committee process to properly reward them in the end, they’ve come up with a way to eliminate that part of the CFP altogether.” (link)

Kentucky introduces a new NIL bill that according to Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter marks “the first state bill [he’s] seen that includes restrictions on third party deals contained in the House settlement. Namely, it provides that a school or the NCAA may require third party NIL comp to be within the ‘prevailing range of compensation.’” The “prevailing range of compensation” is a defined term straight out of the House settlement‘s allowable restrictions on deals with “associated entities or individuals,” which are collectives and boosters. The bill would also permit schools or their affiliated corporations to enter into NIL compensation agreements with their student-athletes and “contains a provision allowing schools to contract with a third party who can enter into NIL agreements with athletes, but only at the prevailing rate.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel has inked Men’s Basketball HC Dusty May to an extension. Describing the agreement as “multi-year” is the only deal context provided in the release. (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd catches up with new Stanford Football GM Andrew Luck, who says of his new role that “part of it is trial by fire. Hopping in in the middle of the transfer portal has been as good an education as anything. I'm fired up for [HC] Troy [Taylor]. Part of what I'm doing is taking a lot off his plate. It's too much for a head coach to do X amount of unique negotiations with players contracts or agents or representatives. … Football just matters more in this country. We know perhaps we haven't been playing enough of the game. And we're starting to play the game and we're going to be there." Luck acknowledges the academic standards at Stanford differentiate it from other programs but tells Dodd: "I think alumni, fans, sort of the community writ large felt like we'd lost a little of that [momentum in football. Part of what makes me optimistic is that I know that this place's ethos -- not just Stanford but Silicon Valley, the West Coast -- [is] let's make the problem bigger and let's go attack it. I really, deep in my bones, know that we can carve out relevant space.” (link) 

Washington Football HC Jedd Fisch tells On3’s Pete Nakos he’d like the sport to move to an NFL-style calendar: “OTAs are just spring practice, there’s no real difference. I just think they should be later, which is what people are considering OTAs to be. We should have OTAs. We should literally just take the NFL schedule, which I’ve been very on record on. The NFL does it really, really, really good. There’s no reason for us not to just do that. So let’s look at their calendar. When they have their draft, we can have our portal, and then we can roll. That’s a way for them to make sure that their new coaches are all situated. We want to find a way to make sure our new coaches are all situated. I just hired four new position coaches, and I think that those guys should be involved with who we bring in, but they weren’t. Those guys should be involved in the retention of your team, and they weren’t.” Fisch would also like to see a transfer portal window that opens only in the spring: “I think it should be open at the end of the year. Meaning it should be April 15th through May 15. And then we should do OTAs, we should do spring ball. We should do whatever we want to do. And then you should have your team. And then if there’s a coaching change or a position coach change at the end of the season, you should have four months to build that relationship with your players that are there. And then if they want to go in the portal after that, they can. I think it should be one time at the end of the school year.” (link)

High Point Volleyball HC Ryan Meek and his staff “engaged in impermissible countable athletically related activities and tryouts with prospects and enrolled student-athletes and provided impermissible benefits and recruiting inducements. The violations occurred during the summers of 2021 and 2022 and largely stemmed from the conduct of the head coach.” As such, the penalties include a $5K fine, two years of probation, vacation of team wins and records over the course of the two seasons in which the ineligible players competed, suspension of seven total matches for Meek across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons and other already-self imposed penalties from the school. East Texas A&M announced this week that it has formally notified the NCAA of its decision to participate in the new NCAA Division I reclassification process and pursue full member status in three years rather than the previous four-year track. Upon successful completion, the Lions would achieve full DI membership status in August 2025 and be eligible to participate in the NCAA postseason beginning this fall. President Mark Rudin: “I appreciate the NCAA and the Division I Council for allowing all reclassifying institutions an opportunity to avail themselves of this new reclassification process. Our institution is fully committed to satisfying all process requirements and exit benchmarks. We look forward to being considered for full Division I membership status later this summer." (link)

Entrepreneur’s Amanda Breen and Jessica Thomas profile former Siena men’s basketball player Michael Haddix Jr., who went on to create Scout, a financial management company for athletes and school administrators. Haddix explains that he started the company after watching his father, who played in the NFL for eight years, struggle with money after his playing days ended. " I lived through it and saw why it happened. And it wasn't because he had 10 cars: It was because by the time he figured out how money worked and had a little bit of financial experience and education, his career was over." Haddix wants to help student-athletes making NIL money better prepare themselves for the future: "It's not about what's coming. It's about what's here now. A lot of decisions are made based on ‘When I go pro, I'm going to pay my taxes,’ or ‘When I get this next check, I'll start saving.’ Put a plan in place for what you have now to prepare you if you never get any money again, and then you can do all the things that you want to do as long as there's a plan. It actually makes your life easier, not harder. … We look at what USAA has done for veterans [and think] can we be something like that for athletes? [Maybe] you go play basketball overseas, come back, and you're 27 years old and trying to figure out how to get started. You have bad credit. How do you get a house? A car? Learn to invest?  We can be this unique community-meets-fintech-infrastructure for anybody who's been an athlete at some point and is trying to navigate the journey." (link)

Four Washington student-athletes will launch a first-of-its-kind partnership with Paciolan and Learfield’s Compass NIL platform to offer discounted tickets to Husky games. Football’s Jonah Coleman, Women’s Basketball’s Elle Ladine, Men’s Basketball’s Vazoumana Diallo and Volleyball’s Kierstyn Barton will “leverage their social media accounts” to provide discounts to fans for upcoming games and will be eligible to receive a portion of each ticket sold as an NIL distribution. ESPN continues to experiment with the MindFly AI BodyCam and will livestream an alternate feed for today’s Iowa State vs. Houston top-ten men’s basketball contest. Streaming on ESPN+, CourtCast will offer an alternate view of the game from the perspective of three game officials. The live broadcast will still feature the same audio and graphics as the main telecast but the wearable-camera angles will replace the main game camera. (link)

The American sports betting industry posted a record $13.71B in 2024 revenue, up from 2023's record of $11.04B, according to the American Gaming Association's annual report issued Wednesday. ESPN’s Doug Greenberg: “The AGA, during its state of the industry call, said legal sportsbooks took nearly $150B worth of bets, a 22.2% increase from 2023. Sportsbooks won at a 9.3% rate nationally, a slight increase from 2023's 9.1% hold percentage. The AGA also reported that Q4 2024 was the industry's most lucrative quarter on record at $3.66B – a 7.3%” YoY increase. The AGA also reports that 30% of all commercial gaming revenue came from digital sources in 2024, up from 25% in 2023 and 13% in 2021. (link)

Bowling Green AD Derek van der Merwe signs a new contract that would keep him leading the Falcons through June 2030 under the new title of VP for Athletics Strategy/AD. President Rodney Rogers: “Since his first day on the job, Derek has hit the ground not just running, but sprinting, providing a forward-thinking, holistic experience for our student-athletics, supporters and students. The rapidly changing and increasingly complex landscape of Division I athletics, as well as public higher education, requires strong leadership during this transformational time for the collegiate athletics model. We are grateful for Derek's commitment and work in leveraging the role of athletics at a comprehensive university, with his vision absolutely contributing to the momentum we are seeing at Bowling Green.” (link)

AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti joins that Next Up podcast with Adam Breneman and says of the league’s expansion strategy: “At a time where poaching starts to brim itself to the top, you have a choice, which is you are a salesman or you are a partner. I chose the partner because I knew that there were things that were going to be pitched that were speculative, and what I said to our schools was [to] take the meetings. Get the proposals. Here are some questions to ask. And then come back and we're going to bring experts in to separate fact from fiction for you because, at the end of the day, what I told him was we have exit fees and bylaws. I can't stop you from leaving, but I can stop you from making a decision that's ill-informed. So, I acted more like a consultant than anything, and it really played out really, really well – not because of my strategy, but just because those four schools that were talked about and I, we were at the table working on this together. And then I would sit back and watch them being transparent with each other. It developed a unity in the conference that I hadn't felt when I started the job. But I think when you're a commissioner that's always hanging over your head, so you can either worry about it or you can focus on trying to make the conference a place that people want to come and want to stay.” Pernetti also says that when it comes to expanding the College Football Playoff that “access is really, really important, but access has to expand for everyone. It can’t expand for some at the cost of others. Are we really going to call this a national playoff? Then let’s be inclusive about it so it makes sense.” On conference naming rights: “We’re doing it. A football scheduling alliance between the SEC and Big Ten will cause “damage downstream,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who explains: “If SEC and Big Ten teams are committed to nine conference games and one inter-conference matchup per year, there are just two openings left on their 12-game schedules. What are the chances they would agree to play quality competition in the ACC or Big 12? Remember, non-conference losses could impact CFP seeding. Also, ACC and Big 12 schools would (understandably) insist on playing home-and-home series, thereby increasing the risk level for the SEC and Big Ten teams. And guess what: There are loads of SEC-Big 12 games under contract. … Hotline prediction: If the SEC and Big Ten finalize their partnership, they will use a fraction of the resulting windfall to buy their way out of the games scheduled against Big 12 and ACC opponents.” It would therefore make sense, Wilner continues, for the Big 12 and ACC to combine forces and create their own scheduling alliance rather than fill the gaps in their schedule with Group of 5 or FCS teams. “It won’t command big dollars. It might not add a dime to the current media rights contracts for either conference. (The ACC has an all-in deal with ESPN; the Big 12 partners with ESPN and Fox) But it would offer better competition for players, more interesting games for the fans and enhanced cost containment for the schools.” (link)

Former Oklahoma Women’s Golf student-athlete Holly McLean is the latest to file a lawsuit against the NCAA challenging eligibility rules for those who enter the transfer portal. Specifically, the lawsuit objects to the rule that a student athlete can’t play for two schools in the same academic year, seeking for the court to enjoin the NCAA from enforcing its bylaw, Competition in the Year of Transfer Rule and the rule of restitution. McLean and multiple teammates were told last November that their scholarships would not be renewed due to new roster and budgetary constraints, and she transferred to South Florida. Per NIL Daily’s Maddy Hudak: “The heart of the issue is the OU Schooner Fall Classic that McLean played in last fall, which is a non-championship segment competition. Those results did not count toward Oklahoma’s score, as she competed as an individual, nor did they affect any championship postseason play. McLean received notification of her cut less than two months after the Fall Classic in late September. Importantly, the lawsuit notes that USF is not in a Power 4 conference, and the American Athletic Conference was not believed to have any involvement or say in the settlement discussions.” More. Kansas State AD Gene Taylor talks about the future of the industry and notes one advantage the Wildcats have is relatively low cost of scholarships. “Obviously our tuition base is low and then our expenses are low compared to a lot of other schools – at a Baylor, at a TCU, the scholarship costs a lot more money than it does here. But we're going to add additional scholarships, almost 40 scholarships, to be able to continue to grow our program and match the revenue generation of the revenue-sharing that we have to match.” Taylor adds that K-State will launch a “$100M campaign over the next five years just like we’ve had facility campaigns over the next five years, and it’s so critically important that people take part.” (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) approved resources this week to support the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices. They include guidance on teletherapy, social media harassment monitoring, mental health services at major sporting events, and other mental health education opportunities. The resources will be added to the Mental Health Best Practices webpage. Committee members also approved updating the Substance Misuse Prevention Tool Kit. Recommendations include: a focus on alcohol, cannabis, vaping and other substances; considerations for cultural, community and geographic trends in substance use; resources to assist implementation; and incorporation of harm reduction strategies, including those related to sports betting. Two Texas state legislators have introduced legislation that would cap the number of athletic scholarships available to international students at public schools. The bill’s key text reads: “For each intercollegiate athletic program, an institution of higher education may not award for an academic year to students who are citizens of a foreign country more than 25 percent of the athletic scholarships, grants, or similar financial assistance conditioned on the student's participation in the program that are available for the program for that academic year.” (link) 

Nebraska has canceled its home-and-home football series with Tennessee and will pay UT $1M. Vols AD Danny White makes it clear that “Tennessee is not canceling this series. Nebraska did. We are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026.” (link, link)

Boise State’s Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) ended the 2024 membership year with 8,977 active members and is aiming to meet the Horsepower Membership Drive goal of 10,000 BAA members by Sept. 1, 2025. (link)

The Big Ten plans to hold its 2025 college football media days at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nev., per the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Mick Akers. The three-day event featuring top players and coaches will be covered by the Big Ten Network.
