Nebraska AD Troy Dannen talks to Husker Online about the new turf going into Memorial Stadium & other notable aesthetics for the facility: “The team boxes will be black, and there will be a little more flare on the sides. The color scheme, the aesthetic of the turf, and the fact that it's one solid color and not variances of green. [...] We underutilized red a lot and I don't understand it. We don't light the stadium up from the outside and we should light it red every night. Red is an intimidating color and we should use it a lot more than we use it. I've told the Governor that the road signs, exits off of I-80 should be in red. Not in green. Not in blue, but in red. Little things like that and how we brand ourselves. Having those red end zones and I think it's a strong color. When we put the black letters in the end zone, I think it's a strong look.” (link)

Would North Florida consider adding football? Ospreys AD Nick Marrow: “We’re not a big enough state institution at this time to support a football program. Look at all the other state schools that have football. Look at how big their enrollment is. [...] You would have to add a stand-alone student fee. Financially, it doesn’t make sense. [...] If we get to 25,000 students by 2028 and we properly fund the 19 teams we have—and we want to keep growing as an institution—then football becomes a more serious discussion. [...] The only thing worse about not having a football team is having a losing football team. So if we’re going to do this we’ve got to do it 100%, all in, and do it right.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown on reports out of Washington D.C. regarding international student-athletes: “FWIW, I've been hearing from multiple DC sources that the idea of ‘international athletes taking American athletic scholarships’ is a concern gaining traction among conservative lawmakers. Don't be surprised to see this end up in a federal bill in the near future.” (link); Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh adds: “Yeah, so don't expect them to loosen current restrictions on international athletes relative to NIL or the potential disaster coming for international athletes with revenue sharing.” (link)

Fresno State removed one player from the men’s basketball team and suspended two others for yesterday’s game against Air Force as sources tell ESPN the NCAA and university are both investigating potential ties to sports gambling. MBB student-athletes Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins were “Being withheld from competition as the University reviews an eligibility matter,” per a statement from the Bulldogs. Student-athlete Mykell Robinson, who had not played since January 11 and is no longer on the team, is also under investigation. (link)

The Arizona Men’s Basketball team hosted BYU yesterday and as the Cougars were exiting the court a chant came from the Wildcats student section. UA AD Desiree Reed-Francois in a statement after the game: “Following tonight’s men’s basketball game, it was brought to our attention that an unacceptable chant occurred. On behalf of the University of Arizona Athletic Department, we apologize to BYU, their student-athletes, coaches and fans. The chant is not reflective of who we are and should not have happened.” (link)

If you’re wondering why Michigan extended Men’s Basketball HC Dusty May in the middle of February, May answers: “We've picked up positive momentum as a team, and on the recruiting front, and we didn't want it to be a distraction internally or externally.” CBS Sports’ David Cobb and Matt Norlander got more details on the extension: One year extension, taking May through the spring of 2030, $1M base salary increase, pay bumps “across the board” for the MBB staff, a “big increase investment for program resources, including Michigan’s NIL war chest,” and a buyout of $7.5M. With Indiana’s job open, May was asked if leaving for the Hoosiers’ job is a possibility and answered: “I think it makes it obvious: I'm staying at Michigan.” (link)

Nebraska Volleyball HC Dani Busboom Kelly’s $700K base salary makes her the highest-paid volleyball coach in the Big Ten. She is followed by Wisconsin HC Kelly Sheffield ($625K), and Minnesota HC Keegan Cook ($425K), Ohio State HC Jen Flynn Oldenberg and Illinois HC Chris Tamas ($400K), Purdue HC Dave Shondell ($375K), Indiana HC Steve Aird ($290K), Rutgers HC Caitlin Schweihofer ($285K), Oregon HC Trent Kersten ($270K), Michigan HC Erin Virtue ($244,500), Michigan State HC Kristen Kelsay ($240K), Iowa HC Jim Barnes ($225K), UCLA HC Alfee Reft ($200K), Maryland HC Adam Hughes ($188,980) and Washington HC Leslie Gabriel ($185,004), according to Huskers Illustrated’s Lincoln Arneal, who notes the salaries were not available from Penn State, Northwestern and USC. Collegiate Sports Connect has aggregated and analyzed salary data for Development/Fundraising roles at Power 4 athletic departments. Interestingly, the range of average compensation for staffers with four to six years of experience is $57,142 in the Big 12 up to $82,038 in the Big Ten. The gap for fundraisers with 13 to 15 years of experience is much tighter with a low of $108,472 in the Big 12 up to $121,303 in the Big Ten. Lots more. (link)

Illinois Chief Commercial Officer Tom Moreland joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle to discuss Moreland's career trajectory, how he determines his next steps, adapting to new cultures, what he looks for when hiring new team members and more. Moreland also talks about gaining valuable experience as part of a collaborative team: "Something I believe strongly in is who you work with and for. … I can tell you what really doesn't work in college athletics is thoughts and theories. That doesn't instill confidence to take risks and drive growth. The number one thing that stands out is quantifiable, measurable experience where you've gone in and played a role with a great team to really make an impact." When hiring for roles within the department, Moreland explains he looks for “gritty intelligence. You can hire a lot of really smart people, but that's where you need the grit. When you're going to work through problems or identify opportunities that we're going to have to work through, really challenging things, and they have the mindset of ‘We may be struggling with something if we implement these new tactics and strategies and do it together as a team, what the outcome could be – how we can impact our student-athletes, how we can impact our fans, our university and community.” Moreland also looks for intellectual curiosity in candidates. “They lean into things, they’re continuing to learn, they’re interested in things that are in their field or maybe things that are outside of their field.” Full Q&A on Connect. Pepperdine has sued Netflix & Warner Bros. for copyright infringement based on issues within the upcoming show Running Point that includes “a purportedly fictional Los Angeles-based basketball team called the ‘Waves’ that bears a striking resemblance in branding to Pepperdine’s longstanding and well-known Waves athletics program. The series prominently features a team name, colors, and other indicia that are identical or highly similar to Pepperdine’s, as well as the number ‘37,’ which is closely associated with the university’s history and mascot.” The suit “seeks injunctive relief to prevent further use of Pepperdine’s trademarks, as well as damages for the infringement and harm caused by the misappropriation of the university’s brand.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann explains how U.S. Circuit Court Judge Stephanos Bibas’ decision last week to grant a partial summary judgment to Thomson Reuters in the company’s copyright infringement case against Ross Intelligence could impact the sports industry. “Ross made an AI-based, legal-research search engine that relied on materials taken from Thomson Reuters-owned Westlaw. Those materials were headnotes, which were written by Westlaw editors and intended to summarize and explain key points of law that appear in a judge’s opinion. Headnotes are helpful guideposts for those who conduct legal research, including attorneys and law students.” Bibas found that while the public has an interest in accessing the law, opinions by judges “are freely available,” but Ross “has no right to Thomson Reuter’s parsing of the law.” Bibas’ ruling is limited to non-generative AI, which McCann explains has several applications in sports. “It can augment how teams use analytics to make decisions on and off the field. AI can also assist teams in making decisions on how fans are kept entertained, including with data-driven broadcasts, and aid sports apparel, equipment and food and beverage companies on designs and recommendations.” In the future, McCann points out that “other potential claims [against AI] could rely on the right of publicity, which is popularly thought of in the context of NIL and which forbids the commercial use of another person’s identity without their consent. The right of publicity was crucial to Ed O’Bannon’s case against the NCAA and Electronic Arts.” (link)

NC State football student-athlete Corey Coley Jr. has filed a lawsuit seeking a fifth year of eligibility based in part on a raft of injuries he suffered during his four years with the Wolfpack and Maryland. Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich: “Coley is arguing in part that (1) the NCAA didn't give him proper credit for his injuries in denying his hardship waiver; (2) the NCAA's definition of a ‘season’ is arbitrary; and (3) the four-year limit is arbitrary given various exceptions like the COVID waiver. Hard to not see this one as an extension of the Fourqurean case, where the judge ripped the NCAA for not having ‘meaningful exceptions’ to the current Five-Year Rule and strongly suggested the NCAA go to a straight five seasons in five years (as has been debated).” (link)

USF AD Michael Kelly sat down with Connect's Bryan Fischer at the NCAA Convention and provided an update on USF's on-campus football stadium project, the impact of the House settlement, the next emerging sports and leading through tragedy and unexpected challenges. Kelly says of the passing of former Men’s Basketball HC Amir Abdur-Rahim: “You start with humanity first. You’ve got to support the family, and by family I mean not only his personal family, but his basketball family. And when you get that call and 45 minutes later you're in the meeting room, in the gym, consoling some stunned and some shocked young men, that's where we started. You start with them. How do you make them right and how do you then put your love in the family? It was also a week or two coming off of a major hurricane that hit the Tampa Bay area [and] everyone kind of becomes exhausted after that. But when you just know how good of a person Amir was, how good of a coach he was, the legacy he left, you get refilled to try to make sure you continue to honor him.” Kelly also says that “within minutes of it happening, I did reach out to a mentor of mine in Ron Wellman, who I worked for at Wake Forest earlier in my career when he was the AD and he had a similar unfortunate tragedy when [former Men’s Basketball HC Skip] Prosser passed away. And it was nice to be able to reach out to him, not to tell me to do anything, but when I was dealing with my team and my staff just whatever he could remember about” handling a tragedy. While SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti largely avoided publicly discussing what plans, if any, they have for overhauling the College Football Playoff in 2026, Sankey this week explained: “We also have an interest, and I said this in December, in understanding selection committee decisions in the last few years. We have different views. We entrust them with that work, but there are domino effects from those selection decisions. Again, I’m not forming the agenda, but I’m identifying things that are regularly a part of our conversation with lots to understand. … How do we understand the function of the selection committee? Is it meeting the objectives established? How are the criteria used? You know, my members want to understand, how is strength of schedule fully evaluated in the selection room?” Petitti added: “From my perspective, how you qualify for the postseason impacts the regular season. Or how you perceive you qualify for the postseason. What factors you think are important. … I think that informs the way you think about the regular season. They’re all tied together.” The Athletic’s Ralph Russo subsequently submits that the “Big Ten and the SEC see opportunities to create still more revenue for themselves with more marquee early-season nonconference matchups and high-stakes late-season intraconference games. And since they don’t trust the selection committee process to properly reward them in the end, they’ve come up with a way to eliminate that part of the CFP altogether.” (link)

Kentucky introduces a new NIL bill that according to Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter marks “the first state bill [he’s] seen that includes restrictions on third party deals contained in the House settlement. Namely, it provides that a school or the NCAA may require third party NIL comp to be within the ‘prevailing range of compensation.’” The “prevailing range of compensation” is a defined term straight out of the House settlement‘s allowable restrictions on deals with “associated entities or individuals,” which are collectives and boosters. The bill would also permit schools or their affiliated corporations to enter into NIL compensation agreements with their student-athletes and “contains a provision allowing schools to contract with a third party who can enter into NIL agreements with athletes, but only at the prevailing rate.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel has inked Men’s Basketball HC Dusty May to an extension. Describing the agreement as “multi-year” is the only deal context provided in the release. (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd catches up with new Stanford Football GM Andrew Luck, who says of his new role that “part of it is trial by fire. Hopping in in the middle of the transfer portal has been as good an education as anything. I'm fired up for [HC] Troy [Taylor]. Part of what I'm doing is taking a lot off his plate. It's too much for a head coach to do X amount of unique negotiations with players contracts or agents or representatives. … Football just matters more in this country. We know perhaps we haven't been playing enough of the game. And we're starting to play the game and we're going to be there." Luck acknowledges the academic standards at Stanford differentiate it from other programs but tells Dodd: "I think alumni, fans, sort of the community writ large felt like we'd lost a little of that [momentum in football. Part of what makes me optimistic is that I know that this place's ethos -- not just Stanford but Silicon Valley, the West Coast -- [is] let's make the problem bigger and let's go attack it. I really, deep in my bones, know that we can carve out relevant space.” (link)

Washington Football HC Jedd Fisch tells On3’s Pete Nakos he’d like the sport to move to an NFL-style calendar: “OTAs are just spring practice, there’s no real difference. I just think they should be later, which is what people are considering OTAs to be. We should have OTAs. We should literally just take the NFL schedule, which I’ve been very on record on. The NFL does it really, really, really good. There’s no reason for us not to just do that. So let’s look at their calendar. When they have their draft, we can have our portal, and then we can roll. That’s a way for them to make sure that their new coaches are all situated. We want to find a way to make sure our new coaches are all situated. I just hired four new position coaches, and I think that those guys should be involved with who we bring in, but they weren’t. Those guys should be involved in the retention of your team, and they weren’t.” Fisch would also like to see a transfer portal window that opens only in the spring: “I think it should be open at the end of the year. Meaning it should be April 15th through May 15. And then we should do OTAs, we should do spring ball. We should do whatever we want to do. And then you should have your team. And then if there’s a coaching change or a position coach change at the end of the season, you should have four months to build that relationship with your players that are there. And then if they want to go in the portal after that, they can. I think it should be one time at the end of the school year.” (link)

High Point Volleyball HC Ryan Meek and his staff “engaged in impermissible countable athletically related activities and tryouts with prospects and enrolled student-athletes and provided impermissible benefits and recruiting inducements. The violations occurred during the summers of 2021 and 2022 and largely stemmed from the conduct of the head coach.” As such, the penalties include a $5K fine, two years of probation, vacation of team wins and records over the course of the two seasons in which the ineligible players competed, suspension of seven total matches for Meek across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons and other already-self imposed penalties from the school. East Texas A&M announced this week that it has formally notified the NCAA of its decision to participate in the new NCAA Division I reclassification process and pursue full member status in three years rather than the previous four-year track. Upon successful completion, the Lions would achieve full DI membership status in August 2025 and be eligible to participate in the NCAA postseason beginning this fall. President Mark Rudin: “I appreciate the NCAA and the Division I Council for allowing all reclassifying institutions an opportunity to avail themselves of this new reclassification process. Our institution is fully committed to satisfying all process requirements and exit benchmarks. We look forward to being considered for full Division I membership status later this summer." (link)

Entrepreneur’s Amanda Breen and Jessica Thomas profile former Siena men’s basketball player Michael Haddix Jr., who went on to create Scout, a financial management company for athletes and school administrators. Haddix explains that he started the company after watching his father, who played in the NFL for eight years, struggle with money after his playing days ended. " I lived through it and saw why it happened. And it wasn't because he had 10 cars: It was because by the time he figured out how money worked and had a little bit of financial experience and education, his career was over." Haddix wants to help student-athletes making NIL money better prepare themselves for the future: "It's not about what's coming. It's about what's here now. A lot of decisions are made based on ‘When I go pro, I'm going to pay my taxes,’ or ‘When I get this next check, I'll start saving.’ Put a plan in place for what you have now to prepare you if you never get any money again, and then you can do all the things that you want to do as long as there's a plan. It actually makes your life easier, not harder. … We look at what USAA has done for veterans [and think] can we be something like that for athletes? [Maybe] you go play basketball overseas, come back, and you're 27 years old and trying to figure out how to get started. You have bad credit. How do you get a house? A car? Learn to invest? We can be this unique community-meets-fintech-infrastructure for anybody who's been an athlete at some point and is trying to navigate the journey." (link)

The American sports betting industry posted a record $13.71B in 2024 revenue, up from 2023's record of $11.04B, according to the American Gaming Association's annual report issued Wednesday. ESPN’s Doug Greenberg: “The AGA, during its state of the industry call, said legal sportsbooks took nearly $150B worth of bets, a 22.2% increase from 2023. Sportsbooks won at a 9.3% rate nationally, a slight increase from 2023's 9.1% hold percentage. The AGA also reported that Q4 2024 was the industry's most lucrative quarter on record at $3.66B – a 7.3%” YoY increase. The AGA also reports that 30% of all commercial gaming revenue came from digital sources in 2024, up from 25% in 2023 and 13% in 2021. (link)
