Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman tells Puck’s John Ourand that comments about a potential basketball merger with the ACC by St. John’s HC Rick Pitino and former Duke HC Mike Krzyzewski have not fallen on deaf ears. “When you’ve got two hall of famers opining about, not only the history of college basketball but the future of college basketball, you have to listen. I take very seriously any idea around the future of college basketball, what it means for the Big East, what the Big East should be doing. I’m not sure I can opine right now what that sort of combination would look like. But we’ve got some related ideas that we’re hatching here about alliances, about who we should be working with as we look to secure not only the future of the Big East, but the future of college basketball. I have great relationships with other commissioners, great respect for [ACC commissioner] Jim Phillips in particular. I would say, I can’t really comment on it, but there’s been some conversations about what we could all be doing together, again, not only to secure our own futures, but to make sure that college basketball stays strong and relevant as football interests continue to dominate much of the headlines and much of the bandwidth of the leagues that we consider peer conferences.” (link)

San Diego State AD John David Wicker shares some info on the Pac-12’s timeline: “At the end of next month, we will have the [MOU] done for our television deal. So we will know what our TV deal is going to be, who our partners are going to be. I will say this, they’re entities you are familiar with, that you would recognize. We’re going to get great exposure, and the really good thing is we’re going to get more exposure. It’s not just going to be football and men’s basketball, but…all of our sports are going to have the opportunity for this increased exposure. It’s going to be increased revenue, which is a big thing for us. “That’s really the next big piece. Once we know that, then we can go recruit that eighth football-playing member. … And then after that, we’ll figure out if we’re adding one, two or three more schools, and whether they’re coming in in all of their sports. They might be coming in some of their sports.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen tells the Omaha World-Herald’s Tom Shatel he’s received minimal fan reaction to the cancellation of the Tennessee football game. Specifically, Dannen says he’s received five emails, four of which were positive. Also from Shatel: “[Dannen] said he spoke with several members of the CFP committee. All told him Tennessee game would not help NU, could only hurt.” (link)

The ACC and Big Ten have been in discussions with the U.S. Soccer Federation about launching a pilot program for a year-round men’s college soccer model. According to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Luke Cyphers, the conversations have been about “initially inviting 32 schools to participate in a two-semester trial run, seeking to bypass the traditional NCAA legislative process that has halted previous attempts to put the year-round model into play.” Big Ten SVP for Policy and Compliance Chad Hawley: “Historically, for whatever the reasons, there hasn’t been a great deal of integration between the NCAA and national governing bodies. So, this is a new thing for everybody. But I think we are at a point in time where it behooves everybody to be open-minded about opportunities that make sense on a sport-by-sport basis.” Hawley also tells Sportico that “notwithstanding the challenges of getting the legislation voted on, I don’t think there is an affirmative desire to move soccer outside the NCAA.” Hawley points out the choice doesn’t have to be a binary one, noting how NCAA tennis also falls under the purview of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Libit and Cyphers also report the “two-semester soccer model has not garnered the same kind of interest on the women’s side,” and Texas A&M Women’s Soccer HC G Guerrieri cites the significant differences in the talent pool demographics and the number of DI programs as key reasons why. Guerrieri adds: “One of the hard details to get over—but what the women are firmly aware of—is that (this is) an academic model. We have to fit what we do into an academic program. And as cool as it could be to do something else, we are still bound by the fact we work for universities.” Lots more. (link)

Queens Charlotte AD Cherie Swarthout talks about her cancer battle and says she doesn’t have a family history with the disease, so “it was really hard for me to acknowledge and say the word that, indeed, I did have cancer.” Swarthout is in the middle of her seventh round of chemotherapy and notes the first six rounds included an IV infusion. “The infusions would really sideline me anywhere from seven to 14 days, so that was really hard. I’ve had to give myself grace and I’ve had to have patience and I’ve had to give myself permission to say, ‘It’s okay, you can’t show up today.’” Atrium Health Carolinas oncologist Jimmy Hwang calls Swarthout an “easy patient” and notes that while the tumor that was discovered is rare, “at least at that point we had a sense that she had a cancer that was curable.” Swarthout says: “It’s hard to say this, but it's been quite honestly a great experience for me. No one ever wants to go through this, but the perspective that it has allowed me to see, it gave me a chance to be home with my 13-year-old at a time that she really needed me. It has really helped, I think, position me and helped me grow to be a better parent, better friend, a better boss, a better colleague, all the things that matter.” We offer Swarthout our sincerest wishes for a full and speedy recovery. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel profiles Tom Perrin Consulting’s namesake and his relationship with basketball coaches throughout the industry, including Connecticut Women’s Basketball HC Geno Auriemma and Marquette Men’s Basketball HC Shaka Smart, among several others. Smart says the twice-monthly Zoom call with Perrin is not the “most fun hour of my week, but I’ll tell you what, without fail, when I get off the Zoom and I review my notes, I’m more organized, I’m more clear in my thinking and I have some good direction. It’s not that Tom is necessarily telling me exactly what to do. He’s just helping me with my thinking and helping me organize my thinking, and he’s challenging certain assumptions that those of us who are inside our program can fall into or have just by virtue of being around it every day. There’s real power in having someone look at you from 10,000 feet.” Auriemma, who met Perrin in 1985, calls Perrin “boring” but adds: “To Tom’s credit, he’s been the same since the day I met him. He hasn’t changed one bit, who he is, and I really appreciate that. My relationship with him over the last 45, 44 years has helped me in a lot of ways. … Players will play great and then, all of a sudden, through no fault of anyone’s, they just lose it, and they don’t know why. Or they do know why and don’t want to admit it. So getting people mentally into the right place, that’s huge. Tom has a way.” Perrin has identified 12 blind spots that leaders, especially coaches can fail to realize. They include: “If you’re too committed to your own system, the answer will always be to do the same thing better;” “if you’re too strong, they won’t be;” “if you’re too positive, you won’t see the train coming;” and “If you’re too internal, they won’t know what you want.” Lots more. Think it's too late to achieve good health and a balanced lifestyle grounded in both proper nutrition and exercise amidst the madness of today's college athletics landscape? Think again! Inspiring read here about the "199GUY", Neal Bendesky, one of the pioneers of college sports marketing and NACMA. Bendesky participated in Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Running Series in Las Vegas, his 37th race, including a marathon and 17 half-marathons, since he survived a "widow-maker" heart attack in 2016. Now a consultant, author and adjunct faculty member at Boston College, Bendesky's rev gen stops included The U, Cincinnati, Saint Louis and South Dakota at the college level, in addition to executive sales roles with the Miami Heat, Miami Marlins, Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers. And if the heart attack was not enough, you can learn more about a journey that included a successful cancer battle and his amazing transformation from 450 lbs to 199 lbs. (link, link)

The NFL, MLB, NCAA and NASCAR support a bill in Congress that would give state and local law enforcement the ability to disable drones during sporting events, which the leagues say have become an increasing threat. The Disabling Enemy Flight Entry and Neutralizing Suspect Equipment (DEFENSE) Act, sponsored by U.S. Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV), would provide "the tools for local and state law enforcement to protect citizens," Cotton tells ESPN’s Tisha Thompson, adding: “Local law enforcement already protects the perimeter of these events. We already expect them to stop a dump truck that would cause harm, so we need to also give them the tools to protect the airspace from weapons and biological threats." NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley adds: "For several years, the NCAA has expressed concern for the threat that unauthorized drones pose at NCAA championships and college sporting events. The safety of the competitors, fans, and staff that work at NCAA events is our top priority." NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier in December told Congress that “earlier this year, Islamic State propaganda specifically encouraged attacks on stadiums, including referencing the Paris Summer Olympics. Social media posts recently threatened drone attacks at the Cricket World Cup on Long Island." (link)

With ESPN and MLB going their separate ways after the 2025 season, the Worldwide Leader could turn to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament to fill some of the vacant spots left by Sunday Night Baseball, according to Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis. Awful Announcing’s Ben Axelrod adds that, per Lewis, the “championship game could be trickier, as it is contractually obligated to air on ABC and does so in the afternoon to avoid preempting primetime network programming. However, having Sunday night available for an ESPN simulcast could help change that calculus, especially considering the growing nature of the women’s game.” Further Sunday night vacancies could be filled by the Stanley Cup Playoffs, College World Series, WNBA and The Golf League, and Axelrod submits: “It’s hard to view anyone as a bigger winner of MLB’s split with ESPN than the WNBA, which could help fill programming from mid-May until late October. How the network chooses to leverage that partnership will ultimately determine how it fills out the rest of its schedule.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen talks to Husker Online about the new turf going into Memorial Stadium & other notable aesthetics for the facility: “The team boxes will be black, and there will be a little more flare on the sides. The color scheme, the aesthetic of the turf, and the fact that it's one solid color and not variances of green. [...] We underutilized red a lot and I don't understand it. We don't light the stadium up from the outside and we should light it red every night. Red is an intimidating color and we should use it a lot more than we use it. I've told the Governor that the road signs, exits off of I-80 should be in red. Not in green. Not in blue, but in red. Little things like that and how we brand ourselves. Having those red end zones and I think it's a strong color. When we put the black letters in the end zone, I think it's a strong look.” (link)

Would North Florida consider adding football? Ospreys AD Nick Marrow: “We’re not a big enough state institution at this time to support a football program. Look at all the other state schools that have football. Look at how big their enrollment is. [...] You would have to add a stand-alone student fee. Financially, it doesn’t make sense. [...] If we get to 25,000 students by 2028 and we properly fund the 19 teams we have—and we want to keep growing as an institution—then football becomes a more serious discussion. [...] The only thing worse about not having a football team is having a losing football team. So if we’re going to do this we’ve got to do it 100%, all in, and do it right.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown on reports out of Washington D.C. regarding international student-athletes: “FWIW, I've been hearing from multiple DC sources that the idea of ‘international athletes taking American athletic scholarships’ is a concern gaining traction among conservative lawmakers. Don't be surprised to see this end up in a federal bill in the near future.” (link); Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh adds: “Yeah, so don't expect them to loosen current restrictions on international athletes relative to NIL or the potential disaster coming for international athletes with revenue sharing.” (link)

Fresno State removed one player from the men’s basketball team and suspended two others for yesterday’s game against Air Force as sources tell ESPN the NCAA and university are both investigating potential ties to sports gambling. MBB student-athletes Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins were “Being withheld from competition as the University reviews an eligibility matter,” per a statement from the Bulldogs. Student-athlete Mykell Robinson, who had not played since January 11 and is no longer on the team, is also under investigation. (link)

The Arizona Men’s Basketball team hosted BYU yesterday and as the Cougars were exiting the court a chant came from the Wildcats student section. UA AD Desiree Reed-Francois in a statement after the game: “Following tonight’s men’s basketball game, it was brought to our attention that an unacceptable chant occurred. On behalf of the University of Arizona Athletic Department, we apologize to BYU, their student-athletes, coaches and fans. The chant is not reflective of who we are and should not have happened.” (link)

If you’re wondering why Michigan extended Men’s Basketball HC Dusty May in the middle of February, May answers: “We've picked up positive momentum as a team, and on the recruiting front, and we didn't want it to be a distraction internally or externally.” CBS Sports’ David Cobb and Matt Norlander got more details on the extension: One year extension, taking May through the spring of 2030, $1M base salary increase, pay bumps “across the board” for the MBB staff, a “big increase investment for program resources, including Michigan’s NIL war chest,” and a buyout of $7.5M. With Indiana’s job open, May was asked if leaving for the Hoosiers’ job is a possibility and answered: “I think it makes it obvious: I'm staying at Michigan.” (link)

Nebraska Volleyball HC Dani Busboom Kelly’s $700K base salary makes her the highest-paid volleyball coach in the Big Ten. She is followed by Wisconsin HC Kelly Sheffield ($625K), and Minnesota HC Keegan Cook ($425K), Ohio State HC Jen Flynn Oldenberg and Illinois HC Chris Tamas ($400K), Purdue HC Dave Shondell ($375K), Indiana HC Steve Aird ($290K), Rutgers HC Caitlin Schweihofer ($285K), Oregon HC Trent Kersten ($270K), Michigan HC Erin Virtue ($244,500), Michigan State HC Kristen Kelsay ($240K), Iowa HC Jim Barnes ($225K), UCLA HC Alfee Reft ($200K), Maryland HC Adam Hughes ($188,980) and Washington HC Leslie Gabriel ($185,004), according to Huskers Illustrated’s Lincoln Arneal, who notes the salaries were not available from Penn State, Northwestern and USC. Collegiate Sports Connect has aggregated and analyzed salary data for Development/Fundraising roles at Power 4 athletic departments. Interestingly, the range of average compensation for staffers with four to six years of experience is $57,142 in the Big 12 up to $82,038 in the Big Ten. The gap for fundraisers with 13 to 15 years of experience is much tighter with a low of $108,472 in the Big 12 up to $121,303 in the Big Ten. Lots more. (link)

Illinois Chief Commercial Officer Tom Moreland joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle to discuss Moreland's career trajectory, how he determines his next steps, adapting to new cultures, what he looks for when hiring new team members and more. Moreland also talks about gaining valuable experience as part of a collaborative team: "Something I believe strongly in is who you work with and for. … I can tell you what really doesn't work in college athletics is thoughts and theories. That doesn't instill confidence to take risks and drive growth. The number one thing that stands out is quantifiable, measurable experience where you've gone in and played a role with a great team to really make an impact." When hiring for roles within the department, Moreland explains he looks for “gritty intelligence. You can hire a lot of really smart people, but that's where you need the grit. When you're going to work through problems or identify opportunities that we're going to have to work through, really challenging things, and they have the mindset of ‘We may be struggling with something if we implement these new tactics and strategies and do it together as a team, what the outcome could be – how we can impact our student-athletes, how we can impact our fans, our university and community.” Moreland also looks for intellectual curiosity in candidates. “They lean into things, they’re continuing to learn, they’re interested in things that are in their field or maybe things that are outside of their field.” Full Q&A on Connect. Pepperdine has sued Netflix & Warner Bros. for copyright infringement based on issues within the upcoming show Running Point that includes “a purportedly fictional Los Angeles-based basketball team called the ‘Waves’ that bears a striking resemblance in branding to Pepperdine’s longstanding and well-known Waves athletics program. The series prominently features a team name, colors, and other indicia that are identical or highly similar to Pepperdine’s, as well as the number ‘37,’ which is closely associated with the university’s history and mascot.” The suit “seeks injunctive relief to prevent further use of Pepperdine’s trademarks, as well as damages for the infringement and harm caused by the misappropriation of the university’s brand.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann explains how U.S. Circuit Court Judge Stephanos Bibas’ decision last week to grant a partial summary judgment to Thomson Reuters in the company’s copyright infringement case against Ross Intelligence could impact the sports industry. “Ross made an AI-based, legal-research search engine that relied on materials taken from Thomson Reuters-owned Westlaw. Those materials were headnotes, which were written by Westlaw editors and intended to summarize and explain key points of law that appear in a judge’s opinion. Headnotes are helpful guideposts for those who conduct legal research, including attorneys and law students.” Bibas found that while the public has an interest in accessing the law, opinions by judges “are freely available,” but Ross “has no right to Thomson Reuter’s parsing of the law.” Bibas’ ruling is limited to non-generative AI, which McCann explains has several applications in sports. “It can augment how teams use analytics to make decisions on and off the field. AI can also assist teams in making decisions on how fans are kept entertained, including with data-driven broadcasts, and aid sports apparel, equipment and food and beverage companies on designs and recommendations.” In the future, McCann points out that “other potential claims [against AI] could rely on the right of publicity, which is popularly thought of in the context of NIL and which forbids the commercial use of another person’s identity without their consent. The right of publicity was crucial to Ed O’Bannon’s case against the NCAA and Electronic Arts.” (link)
