SAC Commissioner Patrick Britz sits down with D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention about changes in DII as a Management Council member, membership stability and more. On the latter, the SAC has never had a member leave for another DII league. Britz on what has been key for the SAC: “We've been very strategic with the schools we've added in my tenure, and we've added them for reasons other than just to add a school. […] I think just overall, making sure that the schools feel like they're valued, that we don't have favorites. Some people accuse us of it, but we really don't. And just make sure that everyone feels valued, they all have a voice, and they all have a seat at the table. I think that's what makes a good conference. Our presidents asked me one time, what do I consider success? I said, ‘Success for me is when every single one of our schools, I'm able to hand them a trophy of some sort. I don't care what sport it is or whatever, but all 13 of our schools get some hardware.’” As for changes in DII he would advocate for, Britz is not 100% in favor of moving to blanket five-year rule, would prefer for the rule allowing an extra year of eligibility for those who play in 30% of competitions to be more sport-specific, calls for people to be more human at games and expresses concern about the lack of growth in DII. More: “I think the other thing from a division that we've really got to focus on is the growth or the lack of growth that we've had of schools coming into our division. When I first started, it was like the waiting list to become Division II, and that's sort of petered out and maybe the Division I and the House settlement and having to opt in or opt out, that may force some of the division ones that are opting out to opt in to Division II. So we might gain some there, I don't know. But I think we've got to sort of grow our division a little bit more, especially in certain parts of the country. It would be nice to have a few more west coast schools and they don't have to travel as far.” More only on BOSCA. (link)

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue ponders how the LSC can “reclaim its DII football dominance,” with the claim that the conference was the SEC of DII just five years ago. On Football, Hogue calls for removing Cameron and Oklahoma Christian, which “align more with the MIAA footprint” and addresses concerns raised by the Oklahoma legislature; ending the associate membership for Central Washington and Western Oregon, citing the travel expenditures; and adding DIII members East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons and Mary-Hardin Baylor to bring the 18 full members, 11 of which play football. Hogue: “This arrangement would give the schools that sponsor football greater influence in conference decision-making. Why does this matter? Success in athletics, particularly in football, brings national attention to a school and conference. Achieving success in football also attracts more donors, the ensuing notoriety provides free publicity for schools constantly seeking to increase enrollment. The reality is that schools that don't sponsor football are less likely to vote for measures benefiting football programs, resulting in a decline in the on-field product. […] ultimately, these actions would enhance the LSC for the future, at least until the FCS conferences decide to expand by adding teams from the conference again.” (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) this week approved resources to support the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices. They include guidance on teletherapy, social media harassment monitoring, mental health services at major sporting events, and other mental health education opportunities. The resources will be added to the Mental Health Best Practices webpage. Committee members also approved updating the Substance Misuse Prevention Tool Kit. Recommendations include: a focus on alcohol, cannabis, vaping and other substances; considerations for cultural, community and geographic trends in substance use; resources to assist implementation; and incorporation of harm reduction strategies, including those related to sports betting. Two Texas state legislators have introduced legislation that would cap the number of athletic scholarships available to international students at public schools. The bill’s key text reads: “For each intercollegiate athletic program, an institution of higher education may not award for an academic year to students who are citizens of a foreign country more than 25 percent of the athletic scholarships, grants, or similar financial assistance conditioned on the student's participation in the program that are available for the program for that academic year.” (link)

Purdue Northwest will add Women’s Flag Football and Women’s Ice Hockey (ACHA DI) as its newest programs. AD Rick Costello: “These are wonderful additions to the array of sport offerings at PNW and will create plenty of excitement for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Northwest Indiana community. Most importantly, Flag Football and Ice Hockey will expand athletic participation opportunities for female student-athletes.” (link)

D’Youville is set to add Women’s Flag Football as its 21st sport, starting next academic year. AD Ona Halladay: “With the NCAA quickly moving to add flag as an emerging sport for women, it is our responsibility to ensure that young women can further that opportunity at the collegiate level while earning a critical degree which will help propel them professionally post college.” The Saints have hired high schools HC Jeff Weiss as their inaugural HC. Lake Forest (DIII) AD Nicki Pieart will join the NCAA Sport Science Institute as its new Managing Director. (link)

Belmont Abbey, Kutztown, Walsh and Wheeling have founded the Atlantic Coast Rugby Conference, alongside St. Bonaventure (DI) and Queens (DI). The new league will launch this fall. (link)

Point Park Men’s Lacrosse will join the G-MAC as an associate member starting next season. (link)

Indiana (PA) has self-reported a Women’s Basketball eligibility violation that will result in a small decrease in their conference winning percentage. Per the PSAC: “In IUP’s case, its final standing in the conference will result in a .020 reduction for the one student-athlete in one contest. It has been determined that IUP will only drop below another school in the league standings if those two teams are tied at the end of the regular season. A .020 reduction would not push IUP below a team that does not have as many wins as the Crimson Hawks.” (link)
