Lake Forest AD Nicki Pieart will depart next month to become the NCAA Sport Science Institute Managing Director. Pieart: “Stepping into this new role is bittersweet. The Men’s and Women’s Basketball Committees revealed their top 16 seeds. On the Women’s side, NYU, Bowdoin, Scranton and Illinois Wesleyan are the top four seeds. For the Men, Wesleyan, NYU, Wisconsin-Platteville and Emory were the top four. Baruch Men’s Basketball HC/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair John Alesi and OAC Commissioner/Women’s Basketball Committee Chair Bethany Dannelly joined Hoopsville host Dave McHugh to discuss a number of topics, including encouraging schools who may be in a position to host to apply to do so as the deadline is today. Dannelly on the top eight protected seeds: “There’s the one piece where, in an ideal world, you have your one seeds and your two seeds and the directive that we have been given is we are to try and bracket in a manner where those teams, in theory, would not meet until the sectional final, should they advance that far. So that’s one piece of it and that’s been pretty explicit through all the sports in terms of protecting those top eight seeds. I actually just had a conversation yesterday and this continues to be re-emphasized that the matchup is protected, the hosting is not necessarily protected. […] We think it’s important to try and work to protect that hosting opportunity and we’re going to do what we can to do that. With that said, the directive that has come from outside of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Committee is protect the matchup, not protect the hosting opportunity.” Both committees have been strategizing on how to allow schools that may be in that top eight and geographic outliers an opportunity to host. WashU AD Anthony Azama chats with the Student Life, WashU’s student newspaper, about the impact of extra COVID eligibility for the Bears and what the long-term impact may be. A large number of student-athletes used their fifth year to return to St. Louis to further their education and continue competing, as Azama notes: “I think that speaks to the culture, and I think that is probably one of the more important things that we tr[ied] to prioritize during the pandemic. We are in the ‘building face to face’ type of environment, because relationships are our currency.” As for the future, he believes DIII will see increased parity, citing the transfer portal and test-optional admissions, and WashU will be able to create a “hybrid” model to add more graduate students. Further: “The one thing that I’ve heard from [the] coaches is nothing will be the same. The landscape has just changed so much, avenues have opened up… I think Division III will probably not be what it was [back] then, and that might not be a bad thing.” (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) this week approved resources to support the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices. They include guidance on teletherapy, social media harassment monitoring, mental health services at major sporting events, and other mental health education opportunities. The resources will be added to the Mental Health Best Practices webpage. Committee members also approved updating the Substance Misuse Prevention Tool Kit. Recommendations include: a focus on alcohol, cannabis, vaping and other substances; considerations for cultural, community and geographic trends in substance use; resources to assist implementation; and incorporation of harm reduction strategies, including those related to sports betting.
