In many ways, it was always coming down to this. In one corner, CBS’ Dodd reports ESPN “appears to be out as an option to take the Pac-12's primary media rights.” In the other, The Athletic’s Auerbach reports ESPN “remains a bidder for the Pac-12’s Tier 1 rights.” Auerbach adds: “The Pac-12 and ESPN met as recently as today.” Dodd meanwhile, notes that “Big 12 officials were told by ESPN executives its league was one of three conferences the network would be airing in the future” and adds: “ESPN currently has Power Five agreements with the ”ACC, SEC and Big 12. A Big 12 administrator aware of the exchange tells Dodd: [This is the] first time publicly [ESPN] said, 'We're not doing anything with the Pac-12.’” Dodd, however, adds the caveat that “while ESPN will not be contending for top-tier Pac-12 games, it may be interested in a smaller package secondary rights for games specifically in the late-night window.” (link, link)

Oklahoma State AD Weiberg tells The Oklahoman’s Tramel he supports at least exploring the idea of playing games in Mexico: “There's work to be done before there's anything finalized or official announcements made. But it is something we are exploring and something that makes a lot of sense in a lot of ways. An example of what we're trying to do to extend the Big 12 footprint and Big 12 brand, around the country and even into North America. Just another example of Commissioner Yormark and how he is thinking.” Weiberg also acknowledges a Big 12 connection with Mexico opens up new markets for the league. “We feel like that fits in our footprint. … These things start with the idea, then you work through the process. That's where it gets complicated. But we're excited about the possibility.” (link)

Houston Football HC Holgorsen reacts to the Big 12’s plan to modernize its broadcasts, saying Commissioner Yormark, ESPN and Fox are all encouraging it. “It's just going to market our kids and teams more. Because of cell phones and cameras, everything I say and do is being recorded. Everything I know is being seen. I might as well go ahead and embrace it. It's where it's headed. It's the future of how you're going to watch games." TCU AD Dickey adds: “We haven't evolved probably as fast as we need to. We've got to help them [rightsholders]. The better product they put out, the more they're going to continue to invest in us. It's a no brainer." (link)

Grambling State AD Scott’s contract extension runs through June 2028, according to CollegeAD, which reports Scott’s salary will remain at $190K, and he will receive $20K in supplemental income this year and next. After that, his supplemental income will increase to $25K annually. Other details, including the terms of a buyout should the two part ways without cause, remain the same. (link)

Extra Points’ Brown chronicles the rapid ascension of Clemson’s softball program, which played its first game in 2020 and has since – outside of COVID – had near sellouts for most games. Tigers Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Services and Performance Honnen, who serves as the softball sport administrator, says it was important to HC Rittman that fans aren’t turned away from games. Therefore, while season ticket holders occupy most of the chairback seats, “we leave an allotment of tickets for each game for walk-up sales, and if there are open seats later in the game, we’ll make an announcement so fans in the grass can move up if they want to.” Still, the school has already had to raise one of the grass berms to allow for more lawn chair and blanket seating, and the school is thinking about other ways to potentially expand the seating capacity. For those looking to follow Clemson’s blueprint, Brown notes it may not be possible without some of the Tigers’ inherent advantages. “McWhorter isn’t full just because the Tiger softball team is awesome. Tickets are affordable (general admission season tickets are under a hundred bucks), the games are fun (faster action than baseball, plenty of dingers), and Clemson has a deep and devoted fanbase that shows up for events outside of football games. That can’t all be replicated elsewhere instantly, or at least, it can’t be as soon as the softball team is good.” Full report. (link)

Wisconsin will install a heated football field and new video boards ahead of the 2024 season, according to Badgers Senior Assoc. AD for Capital Projects and Operations King, who says the potential for hosting College Football Playoff games is what “pushed this over the edge for us. … I think this will make the surface safer because we're not going to have a frozen field like we had in the past. We just think overall it's going to be a good benefit to the program." King says the project will cost an estimated $5.5M. (link)

Louisville-to-LSU women’s basketball student-athlete Van Lith will wear Nike gear during all team activities but continue promoting Adidas on her social media campaigns, Octagon Sports agent Romano tells On3’s Nakos. “Yeah, it’s the same thing with Flau’jae [Johnson] and Puma. It’s the same exact thing.” Meanwhile, INFLCR CEO Cavale tells Nakos that while women continue to prove they can profit from NIL, they can also “make super teams because of the portal. Just like we saw super teams, going back to LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh, or going back before that with Malone, Payton, Kobe and Shaq. You could totally do that now in college, and to me, this is potentially one of the first big ones we’ve seen in women’s basketball.” (link)

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) Board of Directors approved a measure permitting athletes to profit from their NIL, effective July 1. Before signing any deals, athletes and their parents will be required to take a course about NIL put together by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Coaches and administrators will also be required to take the course. (link, link); The Virginia High School League (VHSL) on Wednesday also finalized legislation to allow high school athletes to profit from their NIL. The VHSL will not allow athletes to be paid as an incentive for enrollment decisions or membership on a team or for IP of the VHSL or any member school, according to The Virginian-Pilot’s Frankenberry. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised its benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 5% and 5.25%, a 16-year high. Fed officials did, however, signal they may be done raising rates by omitting a post-meeting statement from its comments in March that “the Committee anticipates that some additional policy firming may be appropriate” for the Fed to achieve its 2% inflation goal. (link); Meanwhile, Fed Chair Powell warned that the central bank can’t protect the U.S. economy from a debt default. “We’d be in unchartered territory and the consequences on the US economy could be highly uncertain and adverse. No one should assume that the Fed can protect the economy from the potential short and long-term effects of a failure to pay our bills on time.” Powell’s comments come as the Biden administration released details about the “severe damage” that would occur if the U.S. doesn’t raise its debt limit. Playfly has acquired The Aspire Group, which will “serve as the foundation of a new business segment around gameday operations, ticketing and hospitality,” Sportico’s Caron reports. Playfly CEO Schreiber: “We don’t participate in gameday revenue opportunities in a big way today, so that opens up everything from ticketing to hospitality to events and experiential opportunities for us. The whole impetus behind Playfly Sports was to help with innovation and growth in a way that creates more of a network effect. We feel like we can do that in some of these gameday revenue categories, so we’re investing in growing into that space. And it should be good for our partners, as well, financially.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed. (link)

The Big 12 is looking into ways to modernize its football broadcasts, according to Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger, who reports ideas being considered include live in-game interviews, more access to locker rooms before and after games, and recording live audio of its coaches before the game and beyond. Dellenger adds: “Modernizing game broadcasts is a small piece of a larger plan that first-year commissioner Brett Yormark is leading. Coming to college sports from an entertainment agency, Yormark enters with an innovative agenda that he hopes will propel the conference. In his first few months on the job, the league plans to play conference games in Mexico, has somewhat rebranded the league and plans a concert tour of music acts.” (link)

Houston AD Pezman says each passing day makes the Cougars’ move to the Big 12 feel more real: “It already feels like August. Every day that passes, the clock gets tighter and the list gets longer. There is so much that we want to get to. … There’s the big stuff: How do we close the gap financially? How do we continue to grow ourselves? How do we find ways to sustain that growth from Year 1 to Year 2 to Year 3? Because you don’t want to have this big spike in Year 1 and fall off, and then you’ve built yourself up in a way and don’t have the resources behind it to maintain it. Those are the things that you continue to refine what you are chasing because you can’t get to everything. What you do deliver on, you want to make sure you deliver really well.” More. (link)

The New Mexico State Faculty Senate this week called the decision to extend Aggies AD Moccia’s contract “both astonishing and deeply disheartening” in a letter to the NMSU Board of Regents, Interim Chancellor Gogue and Provost Shoho. “It is irrational why the former NMSU Chancellor would so handsomely reward an individual when the non-academic unit they supervise (Athletic Department) was almost single-handedly responsible for diminishing NMSU’s reputation on a national level over the past year. … Clearly, as an academic institution, we have lost our way. Collectively, we need to get our priorities straight and stay true to our mission, vision, and values. This will take time and a renewed commitment by everyone in the NMSU community to a high standard of integrity. This cannot be accomplished when those who (through their actions or inactions) create a culture that has (allegedly) put the safety of students at risk, and has deeply damaged the reputation of NMSU.” (link)

Former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes Benjamin and Odunewu held a press conference near the NMSU campus to discuss their experiences on the team. Benjamin, fighting back tears, according to the AP, said: “First it hurts, then it changes you. There's a part of me that hasn't been the same." Benjamin’s father, who also played at NMSU and is a co-plaintiff in the suit against the university, added: “My child has been failed. My family has been failed. And as a father, I feel like I failed my son for putting him in this situation." Odunewu said he endured the same assaults as Benjamin and noted his Muslim faith made him hesitant to go forward with his story because “there were people involved with this…and I was going to mess up their careers. But it just got to a point where I just can't bear anymore. And it's just sad my college experience had to go like this.” NMSU AVP for Marketing and Communications Bannister subsequently released a statement indicating the school “continues to regard this matter as extremely important,” adding: “The kind of behavior described in those allegations has no place on our campus.” (link)

LEAD1 CEO McMillen leads a virtual forum titled “Balancing Risk and Opportunity: What Athletics Departments Need to Know About the College Sports Betting Regulatory Climate.” Panelists include U.S. Integrity Founder/President Holt, ECU professor Malkin, Epic Risk Management Head of Delivery Potter and National Council on Problem Gambling’s Whyte. Some key takeaways, per LEAD1, include: To mitigate the risks of legalized sports gambling, athletic departments must know how many students and athletes are gambling, especially on sports; include gambling in campus wellness surveys, risk prevention & educational programs; ensure the school has a comprehensive gambling policy and articulated problem gambling prevention resources for all students, including athletes; and ensure there is a safe harbor in conjunction with mandated reporting for athletes with gambling problems. Failure to do so, according to the panel, will result in student-athletes never coming forward until there is a scandal, at which point it’s too late. Malkin, in fact, notes there is a 100% chance of a scandal unfolding on a college campus within the next three years but says that doesn’t mean it will become public. “Because of the lack of regulatory oversight, because people do get away with stuff, I think we may have people getting away with stuff more often than we know about it. So I don’t know that we’ll actually see the controversy, even though it occurs. I do believe, within the next five years, there will be a public controversy.” Lots more. (link, link)
