More from SAC Commissioner Patrick Britz’s Small College Conversation at the 2025 NCAA Convention about areas of focus for DII Management Council and the role of the commissioner. In year 17 as commissioner of the SAC: “I think when you've been in a position this long, sometimes you almost have to reinvent it at certain points to stay fresh. So in our role, a Division II commissioner one day you're the CFO, the next day you're the COO, then you're the CEO, and then you're the soldier. If the presidents say, well, you need to do this, yes ma’am, yes sir, that's what I'll do. It varies day-to-day on what you do. The one thing they all want a big picture, long range, jut strategic planning and all that, but at the end of the day, when you have such a small staff, someone's got to do the day-to-day thing. So I've always tried to keep my fingers involved in some of those just to stay relevant and work with the staff or make sure they know that I'm not just dictating.” While the role has assuredly changed, the most important part of the role is “being more adaptable and being able to listen more. I think as long as you can get along with people, and that's the other thing in this role, you've got to get along with so many different types of people. The track coaches are much different than the soccer coaches and you have to navigate that. And the ADs are much different than the FARs, and you have to navigate that. And the presidents are much different than everybody. […] But to me, people skills is probably the biggest thing. If you've got the people skills, the other stuff you can kind of learn and navigate through. But if you don't have good people skills, it's going to be a challenge.” For championships, the focus has been the shift to a metric-based approach for postseason selections and the necessary runway to roll out that decision and bracketing principles. On the former, Britz notes some DII commissioners met with DIII peers in Nashville to discuss DIII’s NPI rollout, adding: “I know that they had a very short runway with it and it didn't seem to end the world. I didn't hear the whole process was flawed in Division III, so maybe we don't need to give that much.” Full conversation on BOSCA. (link)

During a legislative hearing at Sonoma State on Friday, SSU Interim President Emily Cutrer says the university will provide a comeback plan within the next 60 days as the university faces a $24M budget shortfall. California State Senator Mike McGuire: “It's up to the university and it's up to the CSU system to develop that comeback plan. We are prepared to invest but what are we investing in? The only thing that has been advanced are cuts. […] Sonoma State is not corporate America, it's not Tesla, simply cutting your way out of this isn't going to be successful.” (link)

The Congressional Budget Office has projected a $2.7B budget shortfall for the Pell Grant program next fiscal year, its first shortfall in over a decade. By fiscal year 2026–27, the CBO projects that the program will be short $10B unless Congress earmarks more money toward the grants. Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox reports: “Last time Pell faced a shortfall, in 2012, it led to cuts that have hobbled the program’s impact ever since. Congress lowered the number of semesters a student is eligible for the grant from 18 to 12, a particularly rough outcome for community college students, adult learners and part-time stop-outs. They also changed Pell Grants from year-round payouts to strictly focus on the traditional academic year, cutting off aid for summer classes. Year-round Pell was restored in 2017, under the first Trump administration, after a significant push from lobbyists and advocates. Mounting that kind of fight may prove a more difficult challenge now. This cycle, the federal government’s appetite for spending cuts seems larger than ever, especially in the Education Department.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown on reports out of Washington D.C. regarding international student-athletes: “FWIW, I've been hearing from multiple DC sources that the idea of ‘international athletes taking American athletic scholarships’ is a concern gaining traction among conservative lawmakers. Don't be surprised to see this end up in a federal bill in the near future.” (link); Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh adds: “Yeah, so don't expect them to loosen current restrictions on international athletes relative to NIL or the potential disaster coming for international athletes with revenue sharing.” (link)

The American sports betting industry posted a record $13.71B in 2024 revenue, up from 2023's record of $11.04B, according to the American Gaming Association's annual report issued Wednesday. ESPN’s Doug Greenberg: “The AGA, during its state of the industry call, said legal sportsbooks took nearly $150B worth of bets, a 22.2% increase from 2023. Sportsbooks won at a 9.3% rate nationally, a slight increase from 2023's 9.1% hold percentage. The AGA also reported that Q4 2024 was the industry's most lucrative quarter on record at $3.66B – a 7.3%” YoY increase. The AGA also reports that 30% of all commercial gaming revenue came from digital sources in 2024, up from 25% in 2023 and 13% in 2021. (link)
