Alma AD Sarah Dehring will transition to serve as Senior Director of Alumni and Family Engagement after 14 years leading the Scots. United East Commissioner Stephanie Dutton joins D3.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2024 Women Leaders in Sports Convention to discuss the aftermath of the merger that made the conference the largest in DIII, where it is going next, advocating for change and more. After sprinting to merge for the 2023-24 academic year, the league had to go back through that 25-page working document to plan ahead for how the conference wanted to exist for the the 2024-25 academic year and beyond. One of the next areas of focus for the 17-member conference is using its mass to explore new revenue and sponsorship opportunities and be a leader in legislation. As for changes she would advocate for, Dutton says the United East is interested in pursing the opportunity for leagues to earn more than one AQ depending on their size. “That will be popular to some and very unpopular to others and I recognize that. But for what is happening at our college campuses now is our presidents and chancellors, who are having to make some really important business decisions about the long-term sustainability and viability of their institutions, are unable to make decisions solely based on chasing AQs. […] So trying to find that middle lane that can help institutions not have to stress about their athletic conference membership, but still give them at least a fair crack at making the NCAA tournament is something that I think we at least need to workshop.” More on BOSCA. The conversation took place after Barnes had been in the position for roughly a year. She talks about vulnerability of leadership, and feeling better suited in the No. 2 position. The Congressional Budget Office has projected a $2.7B budget shortfall for the Pell Grant program next fiscal year, its first shortfall in over a decade. By fiscal year 2026–27, the CBO projects that the program will be short $10B unless Congress earmarks more money toward the grants. Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox reports: “Last time Pell faced a shortfall, in 2012, it led to cuts that have hobbled the program’s impact ever since. Congress lowered the number of semesters a student is eligible for the grant from 18 to 12, a particularly rough outcome for community college students, adult learners and part-time stop-outs. They also changed Pell Grants from year-round payouts to strictly focus on the traditional academic year, cutting off aid for summer classes. Year-round Pell was restored in 2017, under the first Trump administration, after a significant push from lobbyists and advocates. Mounting that kind of fight may prove a more difficult challenge now. This cycle, the federal government’s appetite for spending cuts seems larger than ever, especially in the Education Department.” (link)

NESCACFBPA President Vaughn Seelicke chats with Extra Points author Matt Brown about the group’s efforts to get the NESCAC into the DIII Football Playoffs by getting a proposal onto the conference presidents’ agenda in April. Seelicke on his pitch to make change: “The NESCAC aligns itself with excellence. They want to be the best in everything they do, and bring in people who want the same. And when I came here, along with all the members at our other schools, we came here to be the best at everything we could. We want to get the best grades, end up with the best jobs, everything. I think the opportunity to be the best that we can be, on and off the field, is what this change would allow.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown on reports out of Washington D.C. regarding international student-athletes: “FWIW, I've been hearing from multiple DC sources that the idea of ‘international athletes taking American athletic scholarships’ is a concern gaining traction among conservative lawmakers. Don't be surprised to see this end up in a federal bill in the near future.” (link); Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh adds: “Yeah, so don't expect them to loosen current restrictions on international athletes relative to NIL or the potential disaster coming for international athletes with revenue sharing.” (link)

The American sports betting industry posted a record $13.71B in 2024 revenue, up from 2023's record of $11.04B, according to the American Gaming Association's annual report issued Wednesday. ESPN’s Doug Greenberg: “The AGA, during its state of the industry call, said legal sportsbooks took nearly $150B worth of bets, a 22.2% increase from 2023. Sportsbooks won at a 9.3% rate nationally, a slight increase from 2023's 9.1% hold percentage. The AGA also reported that Q4 2024 was the industry's most lucrative quarter on record at $3.66B – a 7.3%” YoY increase. The AGA also reports that 30% of all commercial gaming revenue came from digital sources in 2024, up from 25% in 2023 and 13% in 2021. (link)
