Texas AD Chris Del Conte during last night’s annual town hall announced the Longhorns will increase their number of scholarships to 466 at a cost of $9.2M while also fully participating in revenue-sharing. To cover the $20.5M, Del Conte noted the department is counting on $13M in new revenue and $6M in budget reductions and efficiencies. Del Conte said football ticket prices will increase by $13 a game, and “we’re doing that because we want to maintain Texas as the best athletic department in the country.” In lieu of the Orange-White spring football game UT will host a Football Fan Day on April 26, which will include interactive booths and time for autographs and photographs. The Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls adds that Del Conte also confirmed the football press box will be moved to the south end zone, “said the school will go more to grab-and-go concessions on the east side of Royal-Memorial Stadium and said parking at football games will be difficult next season, in part, because the Martin Luther King bridge over Interstate 35 will be taken down over the next three weeks.” Del Conte is in favor of a nine-game SEC slate “because we get Oklahoma at a neutral site, and adding a ninth game would give us four at home and four away. I’m like Bengay. I’m applying constant heat with our friends in the SEC. We need a ninth game.” Adding that game will not deter the Longhorns from scheduling tough non-conference opponents, as Del Conte remarked: “Our brand should play the greatest brands in college football because we're the best. We just signed a home-and-home with Notre Dame. Those games matter. I’m not interested in a cupcake schedule. We owe it to college football to play the very best.” (link)

Denver will opt into the terms of the House settlement, and Pioneers AD Josh Berlo remarks: "Over the coming years, this will empower the University of Denver to provide additional support and infrastructure centered around student-athlete success. Opting in positions Denver Athletics for sustained broad-based competitive and academic excellence in furtherance of the University's mission while embodying DU's 4D Experience." (link)

Stetson AD Ricky Ray says the Hatters have communicated with the NCAA and the Atlantic Sun about a play in which a batter clearly beat out a grounder but was ruled out after Florida challenged because the runner didn’t step on the safety bag. The play would’ve tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning. Florida went on to win 6-1, and there is no timeline for resolution of Stetson’s protest. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reflects on Stanford AD Bernard Muir’s tenure and posits that while the deterioration of the men’s basketball program is “entirely his doing,” the culpability for the state of the football program lies mostly with former President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell, “who did not understand football, did not care about football and did not appreciate the benefits football could bring to athletics specifically and the campus writ large.” President Jonathan Levin, on the other hand, answered any questions about his appreciation for football when “Andrew Luck came aboard as the program’s general manager with a reporting line directly to Levin, according to sources – an indication of Muir’s diminished influence. … All of which is to say this: Muir’s tenure was forgettable in many regards. But the decline of Stanford football is more about the absence of interest atop the university and the changing landscape across the country. His departure reflects a shift in approach that starts with Levin.” Wilner goes on to point out that other prestigious academic institutions, such as Duke and Vanderbilt, have adapted to the new college sports era without having their reputations diminished. “Does anyone think less of Vanderbilt since it slayed Alabama with a quarterback (Diego Pavia) whose college career began at the New Mexico Military Institute? … The cost of a losing, hopeless, irrelevant football program far exceeds the price of the sacrifices needed to win. Muir’s departure, viewed not as a singular event but as another move on Levin’s chessboard, indicates the most important person on campus not only sees the new reality but is comfortable with it.” (link)

Penn State Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James and Deputy AD for External Affairs and Engagement Adam Miller take Connect's Kristen Eargle inside the preparation to host a College Football Playoff game, navigating the weekly decision on whether to return home before the next round, leveraging the CFP appearance in fundraising and more. Miller says the Nittany Lions began discussing how to capture the excitement of hosting a CFP game once the model was announced. “Anytime you're hosting a playoff game you're having a great season. People are excited in general and then you just want to make sure that they have a great time while they're here and they're supporting our student-athletes and our coaching staff who got us to that point to enjoy the December home game.” James explains one of the biggest unforeseen obstacles was the “compounding effect of multiple rounds of planning. We had put all of our energy and attention into the hosting component, which you have. … But once you start getting into the flow after that conference championship weekend, what I didn't anticipate was how quickly that would happen, where you're planning every single round out in this condensed window while handling and navigating final exams and while handling and navigating all the other things that you have going on that time of year.” More on Connect. Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule voices strong opposition to playing high-profile non-conference games such as last year’s matchup between Michigan and Texas or the 2025 contest between the Longhorns and Ohio State: “Why would you ever play one of those games? If we’re being completely honest, Coach [Urban] Meyer, I’m at a point in life where in my fourth job and after getting fired in the NFL, I kind of say what I feel nowadays, I could care less. Why in the world would a Big Ten team who’s already playing nine conference games, why would you ever play one of those games? … You look at a lot of teams, and this is not anti-SEC, but there’s some SEC teams last year that only played three away games in another team’s stadium. Three. We’re in a league where some years you have five Big Ten home games, some years you have five road. You have to go on the road five times in the Big Ten with no Florida–Georgia in a neutral site.” Rhule goes on to say the College Football Playoff selection committee “proved to us this year when they did the seeding and all this stuff that early season wins didn’t mean a thing. That really was, at the end of the day, what you looked like in the last month of the season. That’s what it all proved to us. And when I say what it looks like, it’s really how good your offense is. If you’re scoring points and blowing people out late in the year, you’re going to make the playoffs.” (link); More from Lincoln as Nebraska is naming New England Patriots Director of Pro Personnel Pat Stewart as its new Football GM. The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. and Antonio Morales ask 13 football AC and/or personnel staffers to weigh in on several transfer portal issues, including who they believe landed the best class, the going rates for the positions they coach, the boldest requests they fielded and more. Regarding which program had the best portal haul, Texas Tech was the school mentioned most, with Coach 13 noting: “Listen, they might have overspent for some kids, but that’s relative. If a guy becomes who you wanted him to become, is it really overspending?” Oregon, Ohio State and LSU were also frequently mentioned and Coach 9 says of Oregon: “They’re at the point where they specialize. They’re going to get six or seven guys who are just elite.” As for the going rate for star-caliber players at the respective positions, Coach 1 pegs linebackers at $250K or higher, Coach 2 says wide receivers will cost at least $300K, and the average starting Power 4 QB can command an average of $900K to $1M. Corners and running backs go for $200K and $400K, respectively. Regarding the wildest requests they received, Coach 4 says: “There was a (Power 4) backup offensive lineman who wanted us to guarantee him $300K, and he played like 19 snaps last year. I’m like ‘Hell no.’ I’d rather retain a good young player on my roster who I already know who he is.” Coach 7 adds: “An agent — I wasn’t even sure I was going to take this guy — but he said, ‘Now you need to think outside the box like crypto and gold bars.’ I was thinking, ‘What the f—? What the hell is crypto?’” More. (link)

The Athletic’s James Mirtle and Michael Russo check in with NHL agents to get their thoughts on an array of issues and one shares their thoughts on the new CHL-NCAA rules: “I think there will be a lot of discussion about the four-year college free agency thing. Teams hate that. Agents love it where the guys can basically walk after four years. I think there’s going to have to be a lot of modification based on the CHL-NCAA changes just to try to get people on some sort of level playing ground.” (link)

DePaul’s proposed $60M basketball athletic facility has been delayed by at least a year after the project failed to secure a spot on the city’s agenda for zoning approval. The earliest the Blue Demons would be able to break ground on the proposed new facility would now be June 2026. President Robert Manuel: “While we had originally hoped to begin demolition and construction this summer, the City of Chicago has added additional requirements, which we are happy to complete but do extend our timeline.” School officials say the delay will allow them more time to finalize zoning approvals and secure additional funding for the facility. So far, the university has raised $11M for the project. (link)

A judge has denied Pepperdine’s motion for a temporary restraining order and will allow the Netflix series Running Point to be released today. The judge ruled that the use of the “Waves Marks does not explicitly mislead consumers as to the source of the work…and the series’ title cards confirm that Netflix, Warner Bros., and Mindy Kaling are responsible for the series. There is therefore no implicit, let alone explicit statement that misleads the consumer.” (link)

The NFL next season will use Hawk-Eye virtual measurement to determine the line to gain and it will be the primary method for measurements. Chain gangs will still be on the sidelines but will be used as a secondary method to determine the distance. The system works with cameras inside the stadium that track players, officials and the ball. Once the ball is spotted, the system notifies officials if a first down was achieved. (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy he continues to believe basketball is undervalued. “Does it have a place in the ecosystem that’s very different from football? Yes. I’m not here to argue the value of football. I am here to argue that there’s great value in basketball. That doesn’t mean that football isn’t more valuable. It doesn’t mean that it takes away from football. What it means is, as a standalone, it’s very valuable.” Starting next year, the league will broadcast basketball games on four different networks, which Yormark says will expand the conference’s reach and engagement. Yormark also hints at what future media rights deals may look like: “If you think about where the world’s going with digital media and streaming, streamers want premium volume. That’s why everyone wanted the NBA. When you think about Amazon and Peacock -- they wanted premium volume. Basketball affords media companies with premium volume.” Yormark goes on to explain the Big 12 is considering moving around its basketball media days in the way it has taken its football media days in and out of Dallas over the last few years and adds: “These are all the different ways we’re enhancing the focus and narrative around basketball, no different than what we do around football. Certainly, there’s a concerted effort around men’s and women’s basketball.” In a separate note on the hoops season, Portnoy points out that “men’s college basketball viewership is going to the end season much lower -- again. My colleague Austin Karp tells me the sport’s viewership is down 10% headed into March.” (link)

In distributing the full House settlement revenue-share, Michigan will allot 75% ($15.38M), to the football program while the remaining 25% will largely be divided between the men's and women's basketball programs, according to The Michigan Insider’s Alejandro Zuniga. As far as paying for revenue share, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel tells Zuniga "there’ll be nothing permanently on the [Michigan Stadium] scoreboard or anything that we're putting in signage on the scoreboard or anything like that at this time. But there is a time…$20.5M, that’s real dollars that we have to find in terms of revenue-sharing with our student athletes. We're cutting almost $8M to $9M out of our budget for next year. We're doing different things to drive more revenue through where we currently have revenue. Where we don't look like our competitors is what we do in Michigan Stadium. Our competitors across the board have advertising in their stadium. And those who we compete with are generating tens of millions of dollars in advertising revenue from advertising in their stadium that they put toward their program. … Now, I will say what I've always said: I played in that stadium. I don't want to have to do advertising in Michigan Stadium. But there's a time for us to actually have to think about what is in the best interest for us moving forward in how we're gonna build the revenue we need to sustain championship programs. And that's the question that we have there." One revenue generator will hopefully be concerts such as the Zach Bryan-John Mayer event slated for September, as Manuel notes: “I'm excited to be there to see the concert, first concert in Michigan Stadium. And we don't plan on it being the last. We would like to do this type of utilization of the stadium to drive additional revenue where we can." (link)

Liberty is opting into the House settlement’s revenue-sharing component, according to Flames AD Ian McCaw, who says: “We're entering a time of transformational change in college athletics, and it's going to be a new business model moving forward. ... It requires adaptive leadership and I'm grateful that we have some really good leaders on our campus that are helping us navigate this.” As the department continues to work through rev-share models, McCaw notes: "We're not ready to share details of that relative to internal NIL resources and scholarships and so forth, but we do feel like we've got a good plan. … We really are looking primarily at benchmarking ourselves with the Group of 5. ... Liberty's made a tremendous commitment to support its athletic program at a very high level. And expect that commitment to remain in place." (link)
|
Add North Alabama to the list of schools opting into the House settlement. The Lions will opt-in in 2026-27, as AD Josh Looney explains: "Ultimately we can accomplish as much or more next year (without having to opt-in yet). We're upholding a commitment to 50-some athletes and that ultimately end up being a very, appealing decision for us. Not to mention what's the legal landscape look like four months from now? ... The House settlement Is an earthquake that will restructure strategic plans and priorities at every Division I institution. In athletics you have to adapt." (link, link)

Notre Dame is reinstating its men’s swimming team after a one-season disciplinary suspension. Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua: “Over the course of the last year, our men’s swimming team has taken the critical and necessary steps to correct the issues that led to the suspension of the program this past summer. As a result, we have made the determination that our men’s swimming team will return to full competition next season. While we have all learned some difficult lessons through this process, we are confident that this team is set up for success in the future.” (link)

After The Field of 68 reported that New Orleans suspended four men’s basketball players last month due to a gambling investigation, Privateers Interim AD Vince Granito declined to give further details but said: “We suspended the four players at that time for violation of team rules that needed to be investigated. Nothing has changed on that. They’ve been out since then, and the investigation is still ongoing. … It's part of our policy that a student athlete, no matter what the sport is, signs off on at the beginning of the year. When you break a rule, specifically something that you signed off on, then you have consequences. That's why we're in this limbo state." Four of UNO’s five top scorers are currently suspended, including James White, Jah Short, Dae Dae Hunter and Jamond Vincent. (link, link); Meanwhile, the Privateers have reportedly hired notable artist Master P as its President of Basketball Operations. Master P: “I’m just so appreciative and blessed that God has given me this opportunity … to rebuild this program. We gonna change this. This is our culture, this is our team and this is our family. We want to give that family love out here to the city to bring the people back where it should be at.” (link, link)

A group of more than 20 WNBA players have sent a letter to Big Ten and SEC officials demanding they meet with the United College Athletes Association group. “Last month, 120 Big Ten and SEC WBB players formally requested a partnership to build a business model that is safe, equitable, and sustainable. These athletes are unified and organized, but you rejected their request for a meeting. … As conferences transition from amateur nonprofits to professional businesses generating billions, it’s your duty to give athletes a voice in decisions that impact their lives.” Former Atlanta Dream player Brittany Brewer tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich: “I was a senior member of SAAC at Texas Tech. So I’m confident arguing SAAC is not enough. Although we were all passionate athletes, the institution never actually took action on anything we said, so it felt more like a formality than a real voice.” Cierra Burdick, who played on multiple WNBA teams and now plays for the Valencia Basket Club in Spain, emphasizes the need for transparency and explains: “I think the revenue-sharing data was really alarming to me. If there’s going to be millions of dollars presented to student-athletes, universities should have to publicly share what amount of money is going to each sport, what amount of money is going to women in general. Because if that information is not transparent, then we don’t have the opportunity to hold them accountable for equitable resources.” (link)

The Connecticut House of Representatives approved a spending bill this week that included the removal of a “prohibition on student-athletes receiving [NIL] compensation as an inducement to attend, enroll in, or continue attending a specific higher education institution or intercollegiate athletic program.” The bill will “allow a student-athlete, including one who has agreed to attend an institution, to earn compensation through an endorsement contract or revenue sharing agreement directly with an institution or an entity acting on its behalf if the institution has a policy allowing it and the student follows the policy.” (link)

Kansas finished FY24 with roughly $135M in revenue and $138M in expenses. On the revenue side, the Jayhawks reported about $26.3M in ticket sales with a little more than $10M coming from football and around $15.6M from men’s basketball. On the expense side, “Coaching Salaries, Benefits and Bonuses paid by the University and Related Entities” accounted for nearly $30.9M with football ($11.7M) and men’s basketball ($11.6M) leading the way. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff says KU’s next steps involve ensuring the future financial model works. “That’s the work we’ve been working on for, gosh, six, nine months at this juncture, and we think it positions us for a longer term, viable operating budget, operating model, and it also positions us to be really competitive in the rev-share space. It’s a long-winded way of saying if we didn’t do anything, if we weren’t doing anything, you could probably say you should be concerned. But it’s helped give us yet another indicator, a pretty minor indicator in the grand scheme if that makes sense, like hey we’re not really sweating that, we’re sweating that if over time we don’t tackle, so to speak, some of the things that we need to do here.” (link)

Georgia will not be fined for Tuesday’s court-storming after its men’s basketball upset of Florida “since they held the fans back until the court was clear," according to SEC Director of Communications Craig Pinkerton. Our students have bought in and helped create a tremendous home court advantage. They have been with us all year long and have made the difference in so many of our big home wins.” (link)
