Extra Points publisher Matt Brown confirms the Big West will vote to extend invitations to Cal Baptist and Utah Valley on Friday, as earlier reported by Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, adding: “Sources have all repeatedly stressed to me that the meeting is to discuss and vote on those candidates, and that no invitations have currently been sent out. That distinction is important, because while industry sources in the Big West and WAC circles have been uniform in telling me there’s a lot of confidence that Utah Valley will be enthusiastically supported by all Big West institutions, the decision about Cal Baptist is much closer. … I’ve been told that the concerns some Big West presidents have about Cal Baptist have little to nothing to do with athletic performance, budgets, or geography. Instead, they’re centered on CBU’s status as a private institution, and whether the institution’s policies and teaching about LGTBQ students/employees can be aligned with those of California public institutions.” Brown believes the “most likely outcome” is that invitations will eventually be extended to both schools, but “I would not use language like ‘UVU and Cal Baptist are joining the Big West on Friday’ yet.” As for what both schools’ departures would mean for the WAC, Brown has been told that all five remaining members “have had conversations with other conferences about potential membership options if/when the WAC falls apart. As of February 26th, I am unaware of any league preparing to formally invite any of those institutions, but given that some site visits/benchmarking information has already been shared in some cases, decisions could move quickly. I’ve also been told that while there were a few tire-kicking conversations about expanding WAC membership, (with Denver, with Sacramento State should they pursue a FB-only FBS conference membership situation, potentially others I don’t know about), nobody I’ve spoken to expects the WAC to actually secure enough new members to keep the league afloat. Never say never, since conferences are very, very hard to kill…but there’s no DII cavalry waiting to come and rescue the league.” More. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner on reports of mediation between the Mountain West & Pac-12: “Nothing has been scheduled. No mediator has been selected. And the fledgling plans could fizzle at any point given the number of states and schools involved and the complexity of the situation.” Wilner indicates the agreement between the two leagues to discuss meditation states: “The interested parties, including the MWC and Plaintiffs, have agreed to explore a potential global resolution of all issues, including those raised in Plaintiffs’ Amended Complaint. The parties therefore request a stay of case deadlines to allow the parties to investigate the prospect of resolution without the need to divert their efforts and resources to briefing and/or responsive pleadings or other issues in this matter.” This is particularly relevant because U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen is scheduled to hold a hearing on the Mountain West’s motion to dismiss the Pac-12’s antitrust lawsuit on March 25. As for the stakes, Wilner notes: “If the Mountain West loses in court, or if a settlement produces far less cash than anticipated, the conference’s ability to make the promised payments could be impacted. What might happen at that point is unknown.” (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds: “More clarity here: The Mountain West originally approached the Pac-12 about starting discussions to potentially reach a resolution on the exit and penalty fees. No mediation has been scheduled yet but this could be the first step in exploring mediation.” (link); The Mountain West says in a statement that it has “agreed to explore the potential for a global resolution of the issues raised in lawsuits” brought by Colorado State, Boise State, Utah State and the Pac-12. “The goal is to resolve the parties’ disputes through terms mutually agreed to by the parties. While the conference remains confident in its legal positions, the ongoing litigation matters are a distraction from our main priorities: serving our member institutions and our student-athletes.” (link)

Maryland AD Damon Evans sits down for a wide-ranging interview with InsideMDSports and notes that when the Terps joined the Big Ten, “we did a 12-year integration plan as it relates to our finances. We borrowed money off the back six years to bring forward to meet some of the expenses that we've had; therefore, we had to pay that money back on the back six years, so we really don't become a full-fledged member from a financial perspective until fiscal year 27. That time is almost here, and as you might imagine, I’m excited to receive the full share, which will make a big difference for us. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel with regard to that. But make no mistake about it, in the Big Ten, the revenues that come in from this conference are significant. I always want to say to people…[that] when we joined the Big Ten, we got a lot more revenue, but we moved into a much more expensive neighborhood…but I'm glad to be a part of that neighborhood.” While the House settlement could bring some structure to the industry, Evans points out several questions will remain, including: “Do we eventually get to collective bargaining? If we do, then [student-athletes are] potentially employees. Is there a way to collectively bargain without them being employees? I don't know all that as of now, but I do think that we're going to still have to put more guardrails in place that protect not only the student-athletes, but also protect the institutions as a whole. I would like to see a young man or a young woman who signs a contract with an institution to be held to that contract and have to stay a period of time. In the professional ranks you become a free agent after three or four years. Maybe we do something in college that you have to stay at that school for two years then you can transfer and have some stipulations attached to that. But I hope we can find a common ground.” Full podcast. (link)

More Legal Matters…
+ Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart and Louisville AD Josh Heird testified before the state’s Senate Education Committee today to support Senate Bill 3, which would allow state universities to directly compensate student-athletes. Barnhart: “Our goals still have not changed, and I want to keep that in mind. Our goals have not changed. It will always be to put rings on fingers for championships and diplomas in their hands; the parallel highways we run will always be about education and competition.” The bill passed committee and will head to the full Senate floor. + The Florida Supreme Court has declined to “accept jurisdiction” in the ACC’s request to pause Florida State’s lawsuit in Leon County Circuit Court. Florida Supreme Court Director of Public Information Paul Flemming: “There is no Hail Mary available to the petitioners. The Supreme Court’s order says no motion for rehearing will be entertained.” (link)
+ Florida Representative Yvette Benarroch (R-81) is proposing a bill that would cap agents’ NIL commissions at 5%. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “House Bill 981, set to take effect July 1, also allows high school seniors to start earning NIL money after completing their final athletic season, provided they are 18 years old or have written consent from a parent. Eligible athletes would be required to report their NIL earnings to the Florida High School Athletic Association, and each public high school would need to document the NIL activities of its prep athletes.” Benarroch tells Libit: “I filed HB 981 because student-athletes deserve the freedom to pursue their opportunities without being exploited by predatory agents. As a conservative, I believe in personal responsibility, free markets, and ensuring fair play in all aspects of business – including college athletics. Unfortunately, some agents have taken advantage of these young athletes, charging outrageous fees…which strips them of the rewards they’ve rightfully earned through their talent and hard work.” (link)
+ UCF has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by former Football DC Ted Roof in which it argues Roof “misreads the agreement by failing to give effect to all its provisions." Specifically, the motion states that when former HC Gus Malzahn resigned, the “event triggered a limitation on Coach Roof’s post-employment compensation. The plain language of the agreement supports this result.” (link)

George Mason has shared a broad vision for plans to develop the 190-acre portion of west campus. Priorities include the renovation of EagleBank Arena for $7-10M, a new baseball stadium ($15-30M) and a High Performance Training Center partnership (up to $110M), which President Gregory Washington notes could be one lone facility or two separate facilities. SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “The athletic facilities and student housing would be intermingled with other mixed-use amenities, including retail, public open space, workforce and faculty housing, multi-family housing, and parking. The university has retained mixed-use and facility development advisory Brailsford & Dunlavey, architecture firm Gensler, engineering firm Langan, and contractor Whiting-Turner to assist with the athletics projects efforts especially. Washington noted that GMU has $250M in spendable cash and reserves and has room to take on more debt, up to $200M. The university has identified partners for the high performance training center and baseball field and could do a public-private partnership on the Living Learning Village development. Washington told the Board of Visitors Thursday that he wants a handful of projects to move forward within the next year, including the EagleBank Arena renovation, as well as feasibility studies for the high performance training center and baseball stadium project.” (link)

Men’s college basketball has an end-of-game problem, according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken, who notes that “from the time the ball was inbounded with 3:33 remaining and Vanderbilt leading [Texas A&M] 70-60 [on Wednesday night], it took more than 40 minutes of real time to complete the game. Why? In a game where officials blew the whistle for 52 total fouls, 14 were called in the final minutes, leading to 28 free throws. Toss in a couple of instant replay reviews, injury stoppages, timeouts and endless offense-defense substitutions by both coaches and you have the most unwatchable finish possible to a game that had the potential to be dramatic. … These bungled end-of-game scenarios are absolutely killing the momentum of what has been an otherwise fantastic season in college hoops.” While the problem is not limited to the SEC, Wolken points out that by the time Vandy-TAMU ended, the Kentucky-Oklahoma game, which was scheduled to start directly after on the SEC Network, had less than eight minutes left in the first half. The easiest fix is to move from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters. “Everyone in the sport knows that playing halves slows the game down because the moment a team commits a seventh foul, every subsequent foul results in a trip to the free-throw line for the rest of the half. If officials are calling the game tightly, that threshold can be crossed pretty quick.” Another easy solution Wolken proposes would be to get rid of the current instant replay system and implement a coaching-challenge system. More suggestions. (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte during last night’s annual town hall announced the Longhorns will increase their number of scholarships to 466 at a cost of $9.2M while also fully participating in revenue-sharing. To cover the $20.5M, Del Conte noted the department is counting on $13M in new revenue and $6M in budget reductions and efficiencies. Del Conte said football ticket prices will increase by $13 a game, and “we’re doing that because we want to maintain Texas as the best athletic department in the country.” In lieu of the Orange-White spring football game UT will host a Football Fan Day on April 26, which will include interactive booths and time for autographs and photographs. The Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls adds that Del Conte also confirmed the football press box will be moved to the south end zone, “said the school will go more to grab-and-go concessions on the east side of Royal-Memorial Stadium and said parking at football games will be difficult next season, in part, because the Martin Luther King bridge over Interstate 35 will be taken down over the next three weeks.” Del Conte is in favor of a nine-game SEC slate “because we get Oklahoma at a neutral site, and adding a ninth game would give us four at home and four away. I’m like Bengay. I’m applying constant heat with our friends in the SEC. We need a ninth game.” Adding that game will not deter the Longhorns from scheduling tough non-conference opponents, as Del Conte remarked: “Our brand should play the greatest brands in college football because we're the best. We just signed a home-and-home with Notre Dame. Those games matter. I’m not interested in a cupcake schedule. We owe it to college football to play the very best.” (link)

Denver will opt into the terms of the House settlement, and Pioneers AD Josh Berlo remarks: "Over the coming years, this will empower the University of Denver to provide additional support and infrastructure centered around student-athlete success. Opting in positions Denver Athletics for sustained broad-based competitive and academic excellence in furtherance of the University's mission while embodying DU's 4D Experience." (link)

Stetson AD Ricky Ray says the Hatters have communicated with the NCAA and the Atlantic Sun about a play in which a batter clearly beat out a grounder but was ruled out after Florida challenged because the runner didn’t step on the safety bag. The play would’ve tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning. Florida went on to win 6-1, and there is no timeline for resolution of Stetson’s protest. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reflects on Stanford AD Bernard Muir’s tenure and posits that while the deterioration of the men’s basketball program is “entirely his doing,” the culpability for the state of the football program lies mostly with former President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell, “who did not understand football, did not care about football and did not appreciate the benefits football could bring to athletics specifically and the campus writ large.” President Jonathan Levin, on the other hand, answered any questions about his appreciation for football when “Andrew Luck came aboard as the program’s general manager with a reporting line directly to Levin, according to sources – an indication of Muir’s diminished influence. … All of which is to say this: Muir’s tenure was forgettable in many regards. But the decline of Stanford football is more about the absence of interest atop the university and the changing landscape across the country. His departure reflects a shift in approach that starts with Levin.” Wilner goes on to point out that other prestigious academic institutions, such as Duke and Vanderbilt, have adapted to the new college sports era without having their reputations diminished. “Does anyone think less of Vanderbilt since it slayed Alabama with a quarterback (Diego Pavia) whose college career began at the New Mexico Military Institute? … The cost of a losing, hopeless, irrelevant football program far exceeds the price of the sacrifices needed to win. Muir’s departure, viewed not as a singular event but as another move on Levin’s chessboard, indicates the most important person on campus not only sees the new reality but is comfortable with it.” (link)

Penn State Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James and Deputy AD for External Affairs and Engagement Adam Miller take Connect's Kristen Eargle inside the preparation to host a College Football Playoff game, navigating the weekly decision on whether to return home before the next round, leveraging the CFP appearance in fundraising and more. Miller says the Nittany Lions began discussing how to capture the excitement of hosting a CFP game once the model was announced. “Anytime you're hosting a playoff game you're having a great season. People are excited in general and then you just want to make sure that they have a great time while they're here and they're supporting our student-athletes and our coaching staff who got us to that point to enjoy the December home game.” James explains one of the biggest unforeseen obstacles was the “compounding effect of multiple rounds of planning. We had put all of our energy and attention into the hosting component, which you have. … But once you start getting into the flow after that conference championship weekend, what I didn't anticipate was how quickly that would happen, where you're planning every single round out in this condensed window while handling and navigating final exams and while handling and navigating all the other things that you have going on that time of year.” More on Connect. Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule voices strong opposition to playing high-profile non-conference games such as last year’s matchup between Michigan and Texas or the 2025 contest between the Longhorns and Ohio State: “Why would you ever play one of those games? If we’re being completely honest, Coach [Urban] Meyer, I’m at a point in life where in my fourth job and after getting fired in the NFL, I kind of say what I feel nowadays, I could care less. Why in the world would a Big Ten team who’s already playing nine conference games, why would you ever play one of those games? … You look at a lot of teams, and this is not anti-SEC, but there’s some SEC teams last year that only played three away games in another team’s stadium. Three. We’re in a league where some years you have five Big Ten home games, some years you have five road. You have to go on the road five times in the Big Ten with no Florida–Georgia in a neutral site.” Rhule goes on to say the College Football Playoff selection committee “proved to us this year when they did the seeding and all this stuff that early season wins didn’t mean a thing. That really was, at the end of the day, what you looked like in the last month of the season. That’s what it all proved to us. And when I say what it looks like, it’s really how good your offense is. If you’re scoring points and blowing people out late in the year, you’re going to make the playoffs.” (link); More from Lincoln as Nebraska is naming New England Patriots Director of Pro Personnel Pat Stewart as its new Football GM. The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. and Antonio Morales ask 13 football AC and/or personnel staffers to weigh in on several transfer portal issues, including who they believe landed the best class, the going rates for the positions they coach, the boldest requests they fielded and more. Regarding which program had the best portal haul, Texas Tech was the school mentioned most, with Coach 13 noting: “Listen, they might have overspent for some kids, but that’s relative. If a guy becomes who you wanted him to become, is it really overspending?” Oregon, Ohio State and LSU were also frequently mentioned and Coach 9 says of Oregon: “They’re at the point where they specialize. They’re going to get six or seven guys who are just elite.” As for the going rate for star-caliber players at the respective positions, Coach 1 pegs linebackers at $250K or higher, Coach 2 says wide receivers will cost at least $300K, and the average starting Power 4 QB can command an average of $900K to $1M. Corners and running backs go for $200K and $400K, respectively. Regarding the wildest requests they received, Coach 4 says: “There was a (Power 4) backup offensive lineman who wanted us to guarantee him $300K, and he played like 19 snaps last year. I’m like ‘Hell no.’ I’d rather retain a good young player on my roster who I already know who he is.” Coach 7 adds: “An agent — I wasn’t even sure I was going to take this guy — but he said, ‘Now you need to think outside the box like crypto and gold bars.’ I was thinking, ‘What the f—? What the hell is crypto?’” More. (link)

The Athletic’s James Mirtle and Michael Russo check in with NHL agents to get their thoughts on an array of issues and one shares their thoughts on the new CHL-NCAA rules: “I think there will be a lot of discussion about the four-year college free agency thing. I think there’s going to have to be a lot of modification based on the CHL-NCAA changes just to try to get people on some sort of level playing ground.” (link)

DePaul’s proposed $60M basketball athletic facility has been delayed by at least a year after the project failed to secure a spot on the city’s agenda for zoning approval. The earliest the Blue Demons would be able to break ground on the proposed new facility would now be June 2026. President Robert Manuel: “While we had originally hoped to begin demolition and construction this summer, the City of Chicago has added additional requirements, which we are happy to complete but do extend our timeline.” School officials say the delay will allow them more time to finalize zoning approvals and secure additional funding for the facility. So far, the university has raised $11M for the project. (link)

A judge has denied Pepperdine’s motion for a temporary restraining order and will allow the Netflix series Running Point to be released today. The judge ruled that the use of the “Waves Marks does not explicitly mislead consumers as to the source of the work…and the series’ title cards confirm that Netflix, Warner Bros., and Mindy Kaling are responsible for the series. There is therefore no implicit, let alone explicit statement that misleads the consumer.” (link)

The NFL next season will use Hawk-Eye virtual measurement to determine the line to gain and it will be the primary method for measurements. Chain gangs will still be on the sidelines but will be used as a secondary method to determine the distance. The system works with cameras inside the stadium that track players, officials and the ball. Once the ball is spotted, the system notifies officials if a first down was achieved. (link)
