Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy he continues to believe basketball is undervalued. “Does it have a place in the ecosystem that’s very different from football? Yes. I’m not here to argue the value of football. I am here to argue that there’s great value in basketball. That doesn’t mean that football isn’t more valuable. It doesn’t mean that it takes away from football. What it means is, as a standalone, it’s very valuable.” Starting next year, the league will broadcast basketball games on four different networks, which Yormark says will expand the conference’s reach and engagement. Yormark also hints at what future media rights deals may look like: “If you think about where the world’s going with digital media and streaming, streamers want premium volume. That’s why everyone wanted the NBA. When you think about Amazon and Peacock -- they wanted premium volume. Basketball affords media companies with premium volume.” Yormark goes on to explain the Big 12 is considering moving around its basketball media days in the way it has taken its football media days in and out of Dallas over the last few years and adds: “These are all the different ways we’re enhancing the focus and narrative around basketball, no different than what we do around football. Certainly, there’s a concerted effort around men’s and women’s basketball.” In a separate note on the hoops season, Portnoy points out that “men’s college basketball viewership is going to the end season much lower -- again. My colleague Austin Karp tells me the sport’s viewership is down 10% headed into March.” (link)

In distributing the full House settlement revenue-share, Michigan will allot 75% ($15.38M), to the football program while the remaining 25% will largely be divided between the men's and women's basketball programs, according to The Michigan Insider’s Alejandro Zuniga. As far as paying for revenue share, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel tells Zuniga "there’ll be nothing permanently on the [Michigan Stadium] scoreboard or anything that we're putting in signage on the scoreboard or anything like that at this time. But there is a time…$20.5M, that’s real dollars that we have to find in terms of revenue-sharing with our student athletes. We're cutting almost $8M to $9M out of our budget for next year. We're doing different things to drive more revenue through where we currently have revenue. Where we don't look like our competitors is what we do in Michigan Stadium. Our competitors across the board have advertising in their stadium. And those who we compete with are generating tens of millions of dollars in advertising revenue from advertising in their stadium that they put toward their program. … Now, I will say what I've always said: I played in that stadium. I don't want to have to do advertising in Michigan Stadium. But there's a time for us to actually have to think about what is in the best interest for us moving forward in how we're gonna build the revenue we need to sustain championship programs. And that's the question that we have there." One revenue generator will hopefully be concerts such as the Zach Bryan-John Mayer event slated for September, as Manuel notes: “I'm excited to be there to see the concert, first concert in Michigan Stadium. And we don't plan on it being the last. We would like to do this type of utilization of the stadium to drive additional revenue where we can." (link)

Liberty is opting into the House settlement’s revenue-sharing component, according to Flames AD Ian McCaw, who says: “We're entering a time of transformational change in college athletics, and it's going to be a new business model moving forward. ... It requires adaptive leadership and I'm grateful that we have some really good leaders on our campus that are helping us navigate this.” As the department continues to work through rev-share models, McCaw notes: "We're not ready to share details of that relative to internal NIL resources and scholarships and so forth, but we do feel like we've got a good plan. … We really are looking primarily at benchmarking ourselves with the Group of 5. ... Liberty's made a tremendous commitment to support its athletic program at a very high level. And expect that commitment to remain in place." (link)

Notre Dame is reinstating its men’s swimming team after a one-season disciplinary suspension. Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua: “Over the course of the last year, our men’s swimming team has taken the critical and necessary steps to correct the issues that led to the suspension of the program this past summer. As a result, we have made the determination that our men’s swimming team will return to full competition next season. While we have all learned some difficult lessons through this process, we are confident that this team is set up for success in the future.” (link)

After The Field of 68 reported that New Orleans suspended four men’s basketball players last month due to a gambling investigation, Privateers Interim AD Vince Granito declined to give further details but said: “We suspended the four players at that time for violation of team rules that needed to be investigated. Nothing has changed on that. They’ve been out since then, and the investigation is still ongoing. … It's part of our policy that a student athlete, no matter what the sport is, signs off on at the beginning of the year. When you break a rule, specifically something that you signed off on, then you have consequences. That's why we're in this limbo state." Four of UNO’s five top scorers are currently suspended, including James White, Jah Short, Dae Dae Hunter and Jamond Vincent. (link, link); Meanwhile, the Privateers have reportedly hired notable artist Master P as its President of Basketball Operations. Master P: “I’m just so appreciative and blessed that God has given me this opportunity … to rebuild this program. We gonna change this. This is our culture, this is our team and this is our family. We want to give that family love out here to the city to bring the people back where it should be at.” (link, link)

A group of more than 20 WNBA players have sent a letter to Big Ten and SEC officials demanding they meet with the United College Athletes Association group. “Last month, 120 Big Ten and SEC WBB players formally requested a partnership to build a business model that is safe, equitable, and sustainable. These athletes are unified and organized, but you rejected their request for a meeting. … As conferences transition from amateur nonprofits to professional businesses generating billions, it’s your duty to give athletes a voice in decisions that impact their lives.” Former Atlanta Dream player Brittany Brewer tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich: “I was a senior member of SAAC at Texas Tech. So I’m confident arguing SAAC is not enough. Although we were all passionate athletes, the institution never actually took action on anything we said, so it felt more like a formality than a real voice.” Cierra Burdick, who played on multiple WNBA teams and now plays for the Valencia Basket Club in Spain, emphasizes the need for transparency and explains: “I think the revenue-sharing data was really alarming to me. If there’s going to be millions of dollars presented to student-athletes, universities should have to publicly share what amount of money is going to each sport, what amount of money is going to women in general. Because if that information is not transparent, then we don’t have the opportunity to hold them accountable for equitable resources.” (link)

The Connecticut House of Representatives approved a spending bill this week that included the removal of a “prohibition on student-athletes receiving [NIL] compensation as an inducement to attend, enroll in, or continue attending a specific higher education institution or intercollegiate athletic program.” The bill will “allow a student-athlete, including one who has agreed to attend an institution, to earn compensation through an endorsement contract or revenue sharing agreement directly with an institution or an entity acting on its behalf if the institution has a policy allowing it and the student follows the policy.” (link)

I think he has great relationships with sponsors and the gravitas to command respect any time he enters a room. All qualities that would help in this role.” (link)

Kansas finished FY24 with roughly $135M in revenue and $138M in expenses. On the revenue side, the Jayhawks reported about $26.3M in ticket sales with a little more than $10M coming from football and around $15.6M from men’s basketball. On the expense side, “Coaching Salaries, Benefits and Bonuses paid by the University and Related Entities” accounted for nearly $30.9M with football ($11.7M) and men’s basketball ($11.6M) leading the way. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff says KU’s next steps involve ensuring the future financial model works. “That’s the work we’ve been working on for, gosh, six, nine months at this juncture, and we think it positions us for a longer term, viable operating budget, operating model, and it also positions us to be really competitive in the rev-share space. It’s a long-winded way of saying if we didn’t do anything, if we weren’t doing anything, you could probably say you should be concerned. But it’s helped give us yet another indicator, a pretty minor indicator in the grand scheme if that makes sense, like hey we’re not really sweating that, we’re sweating that if over time we don’t tackle, so to speak, some of the things that we need to do here.” (link)

Georgia will not be fined for Tuesday’s court-storming after its men’s basketball upset of Florida “since they held the fans back until the court was clear," according to SEC Director of Communications Craig Pinkerton. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “Last night proved once again why we have the best students in the country, and I want to personally thank them for waiting to rush the floor. Our students have bought in and helped create a tremendous home court advantage. They have been with us all year long and have made the difference in so many of our big home wins.” (link)

Stanford officially announces AD Bernard Muir will step down, and Muir says it “has been my honor to serve as the Director of Athletics at Stanford. I am forever proud of the history we made and protected, the long list of championships and champions, and the focus we applied to connecting those committed to this university to the greatest good for the Cardinal. My experience at Stanford will forever hold its significant place on my treasured journey in collegiate sports. I now look forward to the next compelling challenge and to making the next important contribution.” (link)

Utah Jazz/Utah Hockey Club owner Ryan Smith weighs in on potentially elevating BYU Deputy AD Brian Santiago to succeed outgoing AD Tom Holmoe: “Those who know him know that he truly makes magic happen. I know that there’s a lot of programs in the country that would like to bring him as their AD. He knows a lot of those people. So, BYU will get the right answer. They always do. … If you look at Brian and Tom, they’ve kind of done it together. Whether it’s hiring Coach (Kevin) Young or Kalani (Sitake), they’ve done a really good job and a unique job. It’s a very, very unique job. It’s definitely complicated. And they’ve figured out a way to play to the strengths. I don’t think people understand how well they both curated what is a growing and very large alumni base.” (link)

The College Football Playoff Management Committee finished yesterday’s meetings without coming to any decisions about the future of the CFP format. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that following the meetings, conference commissioners said they need more data before moving to a model that would eliminate automatic byes for the highest-ranked conference champions. That data is expected to be compiled for meetings next month, and CFP Executive Director Rich Clark says: “Some of it is data, some of it is understanding how things happened last year and previous years so we can take a good look back and make good decisions for the future. Teams are different and conferences look different. A lot of things look different. But there is still data that we can gain value from. They want to understand the implications of the decisions they’re going to make before they make them. We owe that to them.” The commissioners also discussed the possibility of the four highest-ranked conference champions continuing to earn the additional $4M in revenue they would have received for advancing directly to the quarterfinals in the current 12-team format even if they don’t receive a top four seed and first-round bye. Whether that’s enough to move the needle for next season remains to be seen as Dellenger notes Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips believe any changes to the 2025 CFP are tethered to potential changes for 2026. Phillips: “You've got to look at it in totality. It’s one contract coming to an end and a new cycle. Those things have some linkage.” Phillips also believes it’s incumbent on commissioners to look out for the greater good of the game: “For all of us, there’s been somebody before us and there will be somebody after us. You have to serve your constituents, but you can’t be completely oblivious and not mindful of what’s good for college football and the fans and what you’re hearing from them.” (link, link, link)

Georgia is earmarking at least 75% ($13.5M) of its $20.5M rev-share for the football team with men’s and women’s basketball receiving 15% ($2.7M) and 5% ($900K), respectively, according to the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer. The remaining 5% will be split among other sports, and Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks notes: “We’re still working through the conference if there’s going to be a standard set amount. There will be some variances in there but that’s a good starting point.” Weiszer also notes UGA’s scholarship count is expected to drop from about 550 to 475 due to roster limits. Meanwhile, the number of athletes on scholarship will increase from 270 to 370. Brooks notes: “We’re well-resourced enough to where we can do that. You won't really know until you see the fall semester kind of play out in the year when you can see how rosters stack up to see what commitments schools have made to which sports, but the impact will be known in a year or two as some programs go and some do not. … I would project every sport is going to have the opportunity to get to their estimated roster limit without us having to impose any additional internal roster caps.” (link)

More from Athens as Georgia AD Josh Brooks and Football HC Kirby Smart asked students to wait until Florida’s team was off the floor before storming the court after last night’s men’s hoops win over the Gators. The students obliged and waited 90 seconds before doing so, saving the Bulldogs a “massive fine,” DawgsHQ publisher Rusty Mansell notes. (link, link)

North Carolina is “aggressively pivoting to hiring a full-on ‘front office’” for men’s basketball, according to CBS’ Matt Norlander, who reports alumnus Buzz Peterson is “also joining in a decision-making role, in addition to more staff under new GM Jim Tanner. I'm told Tanner could be the highest-paid GM in CBB, w/ a salary north of $1M. The irony is UNC has somehow rallied to infuse more than $40M (maybe 50?) in football + hoops, yet it was nowhere near the top in NIL resources last yr. Had it been, all of these hirings might not have been necessary, because UNC might've built its roster better w/ that $$. I'm also wondering how this is going to work for UNC in practice over the next couple of months. How many people are going to be in the room and looking to make decisions and have their voice heard on who to prioritize in the portal? Critical stage ahead for [HC] Hubert Davis.” (link)

Add Louisiana to the list of state legislatures considering a bill that would exempt college athletes’ NIL pay from income taxes. Representative Dixon McMakin (R-68) plans to file the bill and says: “Other states – Illinois, Alabama and Georgia – have bills right now to make it where NIL compensation is exempt from state income tax. We will be competing with those other states, and we’re not gonna let them outcompete us.” (link)

Toledo will not hold a spring football game this year due to the installation of a new turf field at the Glass Bowl. HC Jason Candle says the game will return next season and adds: “What benefits us is practice. What benefits us is development, and I think a spring game is a part of that process. … There are moments that prepare you for the bigger steps that are ahead. You can't always simulate those moments. You can't always fabricate those. Being in front of your fans and a crowd is different. That's part of the growth process. I'm not trying to hide our players. Everybody recruits our players anyway. There's nothing to hide.” (link)
