King AD David Hicks has resigned after 14 years at the helm, per WCYB NBC 5. The university has tapped Asst. AD for Operations and Student Services/SWA Dawn Regan and Women’s Basketball HC/Asst. AD Josh Thompson as Co-Interim AD. (link)

Oklahoma House Bill 1017, the Oklahoma College Athletic Conference Act, has passed the House Education Oversight Committee and is set to be heard on the floor by tomorrow. The Oklahoman’s Murray Evans and Joe Mussatto report the push for this legislation to explore the feasibility and creation of a new conference was Oklahoma Christian and Northeastern State, along with two non-Oklahoma schools, being reportedly denied entry to the GAC by members in Arkansas. Bill co-sponsor Anthony Moore: “The focus is on our student-athletes and our universities. Their experience is not very beneficial when they’re spending all this time on buses. It’s also not equitable for the schools to be able to travel long distances. We’re just trying to do what we can to make sure to look at these issues. I know some of those schools would like to probably be in other conferences and there may or may not be conferences that are blocking them from coming in, so this is exploring new opportunities. I’m not putting anyone in a box they don’t want to be in, but I want everyone to explore the opportunities they need.” OCU AD David Lynn believes an Oklahoma-only league “would be a huge benefit.” Central Oklahoma AD Stan Wagnon, whose Bronchos are not included in the legislation, is “supportive of the other schools in Oklahoma doing what they feel is best for them just like we’re going to look out for UCO. […] The MIAA has been a good fit for us. I think in many ways it has stretched us to become more competitive. … We know that if we can find a way to compete at the highest level in our conference, then we feel tested and proven to then compete for regional and national championships.” One notable area of concern raised in committees was the “six-year ban on post-season play” for a new conference. Of note from this month’s DII Membership Committee, the group did ask for more information from Bloomfield regarding its merger with Montclair State (DIII), “Documentation from the accrediting agency that outlines Bloomfield College’s accreditation status; and that NCAA staff provide a reminder to Bloomfield College regarding the Division II sports sponsorship requirements and the institutional impact should the institution fail to meet the minimum requirements during the 2024-25 academic year.” Bloomfield previously announced that Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s Soccer and Softball would continue competing at the DII level with its remaining sports transitioning to club status. The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade has scheduled a hearing on NIL for March 4, according to a notice sent by Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), who chairs the subcommittee. Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes the hearing, which is titled “Moving the Goalposts: How NIL is Reshaping College Athletics,” will be the first such public session since the GOP gained full control of the House, Senate and White House. Also: “Bilirakis’ notice suggests next Tuesday’s event will be a topical, rather than legislative, hearing, meaning that it is intended to gather input on a matter as opposed to advance a specific bill for markup. Witnesses will be announced later, and a spokesperson for Bilirakis did not respond to a request for comment. … Given the issue’s complex history, the array of conflicting factors at play and the GOP’s narrow House majority, passing any substantive college sports legislation in 2025 seems difficult at best.” (link)

The NFL, MLB, NCAA and NASCAR support a bill in Congress that would give state and local law enforcement the ability to disable drones during sporting events, which the leagues say have become an increasing threat. The Disabling Enemy Flight Entry and Neutralizing Suspect Equipment (DEFENSE) Act, sponsored by U.S. Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV), would provide "the tools for local and state law enforcement to protect citizens," Cotton tells ESPN’s Tisha Thompson, adding: “Local law enforcement already protects the perimeter of these events. We already expect them to stop a dump truck that would cause harm, so we need to also give them the tools to protect the airspace from weapons and biological threats." NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley adds: "For several years, the NCAA has expressed concern for the threat that unauthorized drones pose at NCAA championships and college sporting events. The safety of the competitors, fans, and staff that work at NCAA events is our top priority." NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier in December told Congress that “earlier this year, Islamic State propaganda specifically encouraged attacks on stadiums, including referencing the Paris Summer Olympics. Social media posts recently threatened drone attacks at the Cricket World Cup on Long Island." (link)
