The NCAA’s revenue increased by $91M YoY to $1.38B in FY24, marking the highest inflation-adjusted total in at least two decades, per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz; however, with the $2.78B House settlement factored into its FY24 accounting, the NCAA’s total liabilities jumped from $304M in FY23 to $3.06B, resulting in a net asset total of minus-$1.97B. Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams note the association “said it ended the year with $1.03B of financial assets available within a year—which includes cash ($265.8M), accounts receivable ($55.6M) and investments that can be quickly liquidated ($705.9M). That’s up from $815.3M in fiscal 2023.” Setting aside the House settlement, the NCAA ran a surplus of nearly $166M in FY24 and CFO Mario Morris says: "With an overall revenue increase of $91M this fiscal year, the NCAA continues to provide its membership with sound fiscal operations and its student-athletes with quality benefits and an unmatched championship experience. We anticipate a debt-free NCAA in 2025, and moving forward, revenue generation is top of mind and efforts to reduce costs are a priority. Good fiscal responsibility positions the NCAA to better weather future expenses, while continuing to look for improvements that help member schools." The lion’s share of the revenue ($948M) came from TV and media rights while $263M came from championships and NIT tournaments. More on the finances. (link, link); For Division III, expenses increased from $42.4M to $46.3M, with the largest increases coming from travel ($1.98M), professional services ($716K), event operations ($644K) and distributions, grants and scholarships ($416K). The DIII reserve fell to $40.3M from $42.1M in FY23. The NCAA’s insurance captive, which includes event coverage and the new student-athlete post-eligibility insurance for all NCAA student-athletes, covered over $38.5M in claims and paid more than $8.27M to finish FY24 with a balance of $110M. The association’s deal with ESPN will pay $99.85M in FY25, with 4% annual escalators. Full independent audit. (link)

Findlay (DII) has decided to terminate its MOU to merge with Bluffton, with athletics being a key factor, as the university notes in the release: “A key element of the merger was maintaining sports teams at two different NCAA divisions. However, regulations necessitate separate processes for athletic financial aid distribution and prohibit the sharing of resources and sports facilities, resulting in fewer synergies in those areas than originally anticipated.” Bluffton Board of Trustees Chair Cheryl Hacker: “While the outcome of this vote was not within Bluffton University’s control, we remain confident, optimistic and steadfast in our commitment to the future of our institution. Bluffton University continues to be financially stable, strategically independent, and well-prepared for the future.” (link, link); Bluffton President Jane Wood has resigned after nearly seven years leading the university. Middle States Commission on Higher Education has placed Keystone in “status of non-compliance show cause” as opposed to the previous “accreditation withdrawn under appeal,” with the college withdrawing said appeal as all conditions imposed by MSCHE during the appeal have been lifted. This comes following new financial information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. President John Pullo, Sr.: “This recent action by Middle States is welcome news to not only the Keystone community, but we feel the higher education community at large. The process of saving and rebuilding a college in today’s higher ed landscape is very challenging and requires innovative approaches, open communication, and partnerships. We are grateful for the care, diligence, and attention that Middle States continues to show Keystone and its students as we navigate to a new future for the College.” Keystone will continue its internal review process and remain in constant communication with the accrediting body to maintain compliance with a report on its plans for long-term compliance due September 2. Beloit will add Men’s and Women’s Hockey and invites the teams at Northland to join the Buccaneers with NC HCs Shane Buckley and Jake Bobrowski to lead the respective programs. The CUNYAC has announced Lehman Men’s Basketball has withdrawn from the conference championship game as a student-athlete who was “administratively withdrawn from classes” competed in this week’s semifinal game against John Jay. The Bloodhounds will replace Lehman to play Baruch in today’s conference title game. (link)

The Football Rules Committee has proposed modifications to the injury timeout rules for the 2025-26 season to state that if medical personnel enter the field to evaluate an injured player after the ball is spotted, that player's team would be charged a timeout. If the team does not have any timeouts remaining, a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty would be assessed. The committee notes the “impetus for recommending this change is to provide an in-game mechanism that can curtail the faking of injuries because committee members think these actions negatively affect the overall perception of the game.” Committee members also proposed that if a game reaches a third OT, each team would have one timeout to use until the game is concluded. Currently, teams are allotted one timeout for each overtime period. Other recommendations include: When the decision on instant replay is announced, the referee says only that the call on the field is "upheld" or "overturned." The terms "confirmed" and "stands" would not be used. (link)

Inside Higher Ed has released its 2025 Survey of College and University Presidents, conducted with Hanover Research, which finds that 89% of respondents somewhat or strongly agree with the statement that they enjoy being president. Meanwhile, 88% somewhat or strongly agree their governing board sufficiently supports them, 77% indicate their shared governance model works well and 60% agree that political efforts to influence institutional strategy poses a threat to their institution. Despite the widespread agreement that their own governing boards support them, just 46% of respondents agree that governing boards across the country support their presidents and/or chancellors. Perhaps the most surprising revelation is just 37% of campus CEOs agreeing that the pros of tenure outweigh the cons. SMU (DI) higher ed professor Michael Harris notes tenure can be a “thorn in the side of presidents and provosts” but says it can also serve as a buffer to political attacks on academic freedom. “Presidents understand – even if tenure is a pain for them to deal with – the damage it would do to them in recruiting faculty [to lose tenure]. So there’s a self-interested argument on keeping tenure, even if they personally would like for the whole industry to get rid of it.” Presidents were asked to select up to two entities they believe to be most at fault for the rising tensions regarding campus speech and 70% pointed at politicians, 27% ticked faculty and 18% selected students. Regarding students’ mental health, 81% believe their institution has done a good or excellent job of promoting student wellness, but just 44% somewhat or strongly agreed that undergraduate mental health is improving on their campus.
