NCAA President Baker has tabbed management consulting firm Bain & Company for a “top to bottom” review of the association, per CBS’ Dodd. Big East Commissioner Ackerman tells Dodd she would like to see a “clearly defined commercial unit within the national office. [...] The NCAA is a billion-dollar concern because of the money they bring in from March Madness. I think we would all benefit from a clearly defined structure, business unit that would be run by a chief marketing officer and a chief commercial officer who would be entrusted with oversight over television with a dedicated broadcast person underneath them.” Ackerman also points to the possibilities of a partnership with student-athletes on NIL, the need for a dedicated leader to oversee all women’s sports & streamlining FBS football. More Ackerman: “Every time there is a lawsuit about football, the NCAA gets sued, all 350 [Division I] schools. Because these lawsuits are about them, when the NCAA gets sued, we're all sharing in the risk and legal liabilities.” Lots here to unpack. (link)

Colorado AD George defends Football HC Sanders and the roster revamp in Boulder: “We are not the first to do this. Eighteen months ago, there was a lot of criticism in our program because guys were leaving. Around 24 to 25 left in December [2021] right after the season. Similar things have happened at other schools. We are not unique in this. We know that in a coach’s first year, you have a head coach exemption, which is part of NCAA rules. Having conversations with student-athletes after spring ball … ‘Hey, this may not work out. You may not get the playing time you want. We’ll help you go somewhere else.’ That’s what those discussions were about. After everybody’s season, coaches and student-athletes are having those conversations. Yeah, it’s a lot, but we are focused on getting better. … [Sanders] is more open and honest about it. I think that’s a good thing. I don’t have a problem with that. At the end of the day, he’s doing what he said he would do.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake writes on the conflicting reporting around the Pac-12’s looming media rights deal, cutting to the latest he is hearing with regard to what media entities are in or out. “I’m told that ESPN, Apple and Amazon all continue to express interest in carrying Pac-12 games. FS1 also needs to fill some important Pacific Time Zone windows. I’m told by a reliable source that — ‘yes’ — FOX is also still engaged with the Pac-12. I don’t know if ESPN is going to end up the Tier 1 partner for the Pac-12, but it still makes the most sense. These are strange times. Bob Thompson, the retired Fox Sports Networks president, told me that the layoffs, restructuring and economic pressures currently plaguing the industry are a ‘minor’ factor in these kinds of negotiations.” (link)

Texas President Hartzell will be in attendance at the annual SEC spring meetings this month with a key goal in mind: building relationships. Hartzell: “It’s going to be weird. I’ll be there with no voting rights. We’re not officially in yet. … I’ll be there mainly to start building relationships. I don’t want to come in here and guns blazing. Texas on occasion has a reputation as, you know, being an alpha. I’m happy to come in and start just being part of the team ... It’s a great league, and we’re excited about it and we want to fit in and be a good partner with the league with all the other presidents and chancellors. We’ve got a role to play, but also want to be a team player.” (link)

More from Oklahoma softball HC Gasso on the possibility of playing a game inside the Sooners football stadium: “Joe Castiglione is a mover and a shaker. And I think we all know that. And if it is feasible, if it fits, which it seems like from the renderings it doesn't. But is it worth us moving things. [...] I went to Long Beach State, right? So when I came out here (and saw Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium), I'm like oh. Breath-taking. Wow. And then I bring recruits in here and I say, 'wow. Could you ever imagine if we could ever play in front of this many fans?’ (They’d say), ‘oh, gosh, no, I'd be so nervous.’ I'm like 'no, it will never happen.’ [...] My life has been like taking on so many 'wow moments' in the last five years or so. I'm telling you, if Joe could find a way and we could find the right time and the right team, I think it would be absolutely amazing.” (link)

It now looks like Oregon’s new indoor football practice facility will not be complete before the 2024 season as originally planned. The 170K square-foot facility has been delayed while the university and city of Eugene work to finalize a land swap deal that would accommodate the new space and two adjacent outdoor practice fields. Ducks’ AD Mullens: “We’re still in process because there’s a lot of moving parts on it and elements that it takes. … I think any timeline that was ever shared was loose to begin with. We knew this was a process with a lot of moving parts. I don’t think there ever really was a firm timeline. I don’t want to put a date on (when the new facility will be completed) because I don’t know that it’s firm. I don’t think we have that.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Brown pontificates on the potential positives and negatives of the Big 12 playing games in Mexico, pointing to unique student-athlete experiences, the potential ties of certain current and incoming members that have high hispanic student populations to the country and more as positives. On the other side, Brown highlights the small pipeline of Mexican FB and basketball student-athletes to DI overall and ease of access to games and content in the nation, with the added financial and logistical questions, to which Brown writes. “These aren’t unsurmountable questions by any means, but they also carry opportunity costs. Every minute Big 12 or campus-level staffers are working on Mexico issues are minutes they’re not spending on fundraising, instruction, corporate sales, etc. Is this worth the time sacrifice? Essentially, if this is executed well, these games will provide deeply meaningful experiences to athletes. That’s worth celebrating! They might help provide an important cultural exchange for Big 12 schools that don’t have many Mexican students or community members…and very long-term, the trips may help cultivate new fans in Mexico. If that’s how the Big 12 will measure success, then sure, this seems like a great idea.” (link)

Southeast Missouri State elevates AD Barke to VP for Intercollegiate Athletics. On3’s Prisbell gets comments from experts around the industry about the NCAA’s public messaging problem. Athliance CEO Schoenthal on Board of Governors Chair/Baylor President Livingstone’s calls for federal legislation from the NCAA Convention: “This is the NCAA’s biggest problem and why they can’t get out of their own way. And they don’t understand why no one gets it. What she [Livingstone] meant was, ‘Based on what’s going on right now, we need a limited antitrust exemption because we want to be able to protect Title IX athletes, Division II and Division III. And we understand we’re going to have to share revenue with revenue-generating athletes, but if we don’t get the limited antitrust exemption, we’re going to hurt the whole model.’ If she would have just said that, it is a totally different story.” Prisbell also gets this from Kennyhertz Perry attorney Winter: “The broader point, Winter said, is it is time for the NCAA to acknowledge reality and publicly discuss practical solutions that entail sharing more revenue with athletes. Continuing to spend millions of dollars fighting the athlete compensation issue in court isn’t a prudent strategy, he said, and neither is asking for a federal law that seeks to enshrine the current rapidly eroding model. Until the NCAA realizes this, Winter said, it will continue to drop the ball on public messaging.” (link)

Bama’s Betting Saga…
+ Alabama has terminated Baseball HC Bohannon “for, among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees,” per AD Byrne. The decision comes days after bets were halted in Ohio over the Tide’s game against LSU last week and Bohannon was named in a lawsuit brought by a former player who alleges negligence over the handling of an injury. Now regulators in Indiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have also halted action on Alabama baseball. SEC Commissioner Sankey comments, in part: “The University of Alabama has taken swift action after information about baseball sports wagering activity was questioned by industry regulators. Ensuring the integrity of athletic competition is our highest priority, and for that purpose the SEC monitors gambling activity through its relationship with US Integrity and has done so since 2018. There must be zero tolerance for activity that puts into question the integrity of competition.” (link)
+ D1Baseball’s Rogers adds that the situation “is not believed to include any players on the Tide's roster. It also appears the investigation is very much focused on Brad Bohannon.” The Athletic’s Ubben and Staples reporting Bohannon was “found to be connected with the betting activity in Ohio.” (link, link)
+ ESPN’s Purdum reports surveillance video from Great America Ball Park’s sportsbook indicated the individual placing the bets in question was “communicating with Bohannon at the time.” A statement from the NCAA: “The NCAA takes sports wagering very seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athlete well-being and the integrity of competition," the spokesperson said. "We will work with our partners to protect student-athletes and the sports they play. The association is monitoring the situation.” (link)

Evansville AD Siegfried camps with the Evansville Courier & Press’ Kristensen for part one of a two-part series as he wraps his first year leading the Purple Aces. Year one saw a 70% increase in fundraising, an increase in ticket sales of around ~45% and attendance up 53% year-over-year. Siegfried on enacting change to move forward: “I needed turnover and that turnover has allowed us to get the culture where I need it to be and that’s why I think we are where we are today. […] I need to continue to hire leaders and develop leaders, and that’s part of what we’re doing.” Looking ahead, he splits UE sports into two categories: growth mode and laying the foundation with Women’s Basketball, Volleyball, Men’s Soccer, Swimming & Diving, Baseball and Golf in the former category. Siegfried’s priority is focus, adding: “We can all sit at the table and we come up with a million ideas, but if we don’t execute them they’re not going to come to fruition.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Teel says the fact that nine of the 15 Men’s Basketball HCs in the ACC are Black is something that is “too striking to be ignored,” pointing out that the number is up threefold since 2021. ACC Commissioner Phillips: “There’s not a conference meeting where we don’t discuss the topic in some way.” Former Virginia AD/current Collegiate Sports Associates Senior Consultant Littlepage: “I think all of the search firms, and major search firms in particular, and all of the institutions, their awareness is heightened in terms of diversifying the (candidate) pool. We have definitely seen that in the searches we have done, administrative as well as on the coaching sides of things. It’s intentional. I think institutions as well as search firms have to be very deliberate and intentional that they’re casting the net a little more broadly than in other times.” More (link)

Tiger Rag’s Horne reports: “A federal court judge in two rulings over the past six weeks issued orders waiving LSU’s attorney-client privilege with its former law firm Taylor Porter saying in the latest order the attorneys for Sharon Lewis, a former employee of the athletic department, have so far proven that members of the LSU Board of Supervisors, former athletic director Joe Alleva, and Senior Associate Athletic Director Miriam Segar unlawfully concealed public records and therefore acted in the furtherance of a crime.” LSU and Taylor Porter must now release all documents and communications involving the 2013 settlement between former Tigers FB HC Miles and a student worker who accused him of sexual harassment.
