West Virginia State AD Nate Burton will depart after 11 years with the university to become the Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation at Furman (DI). WVSU VP/Chief of Staff Eric Jackson: “Nate Burton led by example, embodying dedication, teamwork, and service in every aspect of his role. He wasn't just an administrator—he was hands-on, tackling facility repairs, enhancing game-day experiences, and ensuring that players and coaches had the support they needed to succeed.” Assoc. AD Sean McAndrews will serve as Interim AD. (link) Burton’s advice for his successor: “The first thing are the people. The staff that we have here, student-athletes that we have, leadership across campus, great people who are very talented and want the best for the students at West Virginia State University. […] The success that we’ve had at West Virginia State, if it weren’t for the city of Charleston, Kanawha County and the state of West Virginia, we wouldn’t have achieved very much, so very appreciative of all of those aspects, but just really the people here are second to none.” (link)

“The bulk of my career I’ve worked in Division I and there’s been some major changes over the last few years that are not quite aligned with who I am, both professionally and personally. So I was starting to look at Division II opportunities, and even at some point was thinking about leaving college athletics. […] It was just a perfect fit for what I was looking for. Of note, the NCAA has distributed new guidance on the timeline to opt into or out of the House settlement as a memo indicates March 1 for those who intend or “believe they are likely to provide benefits. [...] The March 1 date is intended to provide an estimate of the volume of institutions that will need to be onboarded and trained.” Further, the formal opt-in timeline is no later than June 15 with the caveat of “If the settlement is not approved by June 15, 2025, this date will be revisited.” (link)

The NCAA’s eligibility rules may be in “serious legal trouble,” according to Boise State (DI) professor Sam Ehrlich, who cites the rash of recent lawsuits, including one filed by current USF (DI)/former Oklahoma (DI) women’s golfer Holly McLean. The case, Ehrlich writes, has a “positively awful fact pattern for the NCAA: a sympathetic plaintiff who has been hurt entirely by the NCAA’s own lack of foresight and proactivity. And—terrifyingly for the NCAA—McLean’s lawsuit could lead to massive ripple effects, given that she is challenging a rule most sacred to any sports league’s governance structure: NCAA Bylaw 14.5.5.2 (the ‘Competition in Year of Transfer’ Rule).” At the heart of the matter is the House settlement’s new roster limits, and Ehrlich notes the roster limits were the reason Oklahoma informed McLean and others in November 2024 they would lose their scholarships and roster spots after the 2025 spring semester. McLean proactively transferred to USF; however, Ehrlich points out that “one month before OU cut her, McLean had participated in the OU Schooner Fall Classic…[and] the NCAA said that her play in this tournament counted as participation for OU in the 2024-25 school year.” As such, McLean could not compete for USF in the Spring 2025 semester. USF applied for a waiver on the grounds that McLean’s transfer was beyond her control and was encouraged by OU. The NCAA denied the waiver as well as a subsequent appeal. McLean therefore sued, arguing that her inability to compete would cost her potential NIL opportunities. Ehrlich: “While I’m fairly confident that even if McLean wins, the judge won’t throw out the entire Competition in Year of Transfer Rule, a McLean victory would certainly put some cracks in it. Enough to allow for mid-season transfers all across the NCAA? Probably not. But given that McLean is almost certainly not the only athlete in this situation, it’s not a possibility that can be ruled out.” (link)

The Minnesota Vikings have partnered with Augustana, Bethel (MN - DIII), Concordia (MN - DIII), Gustavus Adolphus (DIII), Northwestern-St. Paul (DIII) and Wisconsin-Stout (DIII) to support the addition of Women’s Flag Football. The team will pay $140K to fund a new league and support the programs at these six schools. This comes as the Vikings are supporting the sport becoming sanctioned by the state with the first high school league coming this spring. Northwestern AD Matt Hill: “I think that it will be a recruiting piece in the future, for us to say we offer flag, whether it’s a standalone sport or it’s a supplement to your regular sport [for other varsity athletes]. It’s definitely an opportunity for us to grow our enrollment.” (link, link)

North Georgia kicks off the Champion Her campaign to raise $100K this year to support women’s programs. Former AD Lindsay Reeves will spearhead the initiative, which has been kickstarted by a $10K anonymous donation. AD Mary Rob Plunkett: "We all know what UNG stands for — providing a high-quality education, an exceptional athletic experience and preparing our student-athletes for life beyond college. The Champion HER initiative is yet another foundational step in this mission's journey.” (link)

The NCAA and Wilson Sporting Goods extend their partnership for the DI, DII and DIII Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships. Wilson will continue to provide the official tennis balls and accessories to the NCAA. (link)
