U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken has released details on the House settlement final approval hearing to be held on April 7. Due to time constraints, Wilken has limited the objectors that will be called as part of the hearing. Boise State (DI) professor Sam Ehrlich shares the list and points out Wilken has attached a note explaining that the “Court cannot order changes to the agreement. Objectors should address whether they wish the Court to reject the settlement and set the case for trial.” Ehrlich submits this is likely in response to those who have asked Wilken to push the NCAA to change roster limits. (link); Full document. (link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes the most notable objector is the United States, “meaning the DOJ, who raised antitrust issues with the settlement. Other notable objectors that will be allowed to speak are Livvy Dunne and objectors represented by former NBPA exec director Michele Roberts.” (link)

On The Hill...

+ Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes that “from the start, Democratic subcommittee members quickly seized on the opportunity to draw parallels between the debate over [NIL] and President Trump’s recent efforts to limit [NIH] funding to universities. Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) remarked: “Today, If we truly want to address the real crisis affecting our colleges and universities, we should focus on the financial disaster they face, exacerbated by President Trump and his complicit Republican Congress.” Libit further contextualizes the hearing by noting it comes on the heels of last week’s confrontation between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and the administration’s imposition of 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. “In this tense environment, the hearing itself reiterated the deep divisions within Congress on how to address college sports reform. As has become common over the past year, subcommittee Democrats emphasized athlete rights—which include employee protections—while Republicans focused on restoring stability to the system.” Congressman Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-CA) “set an ambitious precedent for forthcoming bills,” per Libit, who quotes Obernolte as saying: “We have an opportunity to create a system where everybody wins. Let’s not mess it up.” Libit subsequently posits: “One way for Congress to avoid that fate is to uphold its long-standing tradition of holding NIL hearings without enacting actual legislation. And, true to form, as Tuesday’s hearing drew to a close, a House Judiciary subcommittee unveiled plans to convene a second college sports panel next week.” (link)

+ CBS’ Dennis Dodd shares more takeaways from the hearing, including Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger asking how student-athletes’ fair market NIL value should be determined. When no one answered, Harshbarger remarked: “I know you’re speechless.” Dodd points out Illinois AD Josh Whitman did answer. While Harshbarger and Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA) were well-informed, Dodd notes several other lawmakers were not and subsequently observed: “I didn't hear the words ‘collective bargaining’ once today in this NIL hearing. With all due respect to the witnesses who shared their time, I'd like to see one of these committees invite an All-American at a P4 school player making $2M a year. And an NIL marketing agent. And an attorney in the trenches like Darren Heitner.” Dodd also writes: “This recently from a stakeholder in the NIL debate. ‘Whoever their [schools, conferences, NCAA] lobbyists are have no friggin’ idea what they’re doing … They’re not talking about the things that worry Congress. They’re talking about the things that worry them.’” Overall, Dodd sums up: “If I had a conclusion on NIL hearing No. 11, it would be the same conclusion I had after NIL hearings Nos. 1-10: The NCAA isn't getting an anti-trust exemption.” (link)

+ Texas Woman’s and Union now sit atop their respective regions in the final rankings, alongside Seton Hill, Pittsburg State, Bentley, Grand Valley State, North Georgia and Cal State Dominguez Hills who all continue to be the top team in their region. (link)

Minnesota Duluth will opt into the House settlement. As for what that means and whether UMD will add roster spots in hockey and pay student-athletes, Bulldogs AD Forrest Karr says: “Our hope is to keep moving our programs forward. We intend to keep both programs in the position to be nationally competitive. Each decision that we make moving forward, whatever the rules end up being, each decision that we make will be informed by changes being made at other WCHA and NCHC programs. It will depend, at least in part, on donor support. We’re going to be working with donors to help support these changes. … We want to make sure we fully understand what the landscape looks like. Our intent will be to keep both the programs nationally competitive. It’s going to be an interesting few months, but our overall intent is to make sure that our hockey programs are strong, and we’re going to work with our donors to do that.” (link)
