USA Today’s Berkowitz has the latest filing in the House-Prince antitrust case as the NCAA says plaintiff attorneys are seeking $1.4B in damages with this key piece of additional info: “The filings did not specify whether that figure takes into account the tripling of damages awards that occurs in successful antitrust cases. If it does not, then more than $4.2 billion could be at stake in the case.” Further per the filing, notable media consultant Desser provided expert testimony that the “value of the use of athletes' NIL in college sports TV contracts is 10% of the total broadcast revenue for each conference,” as well as, “the dollar amount connected to that percentage in a multi-sport media deal, 75% can be attributed to football, 15% to men's basketball and 5% to women's basketball, 5% to Olympic sports.” The NCAA provided a chart that illustrates how the payouts would have looked in 2021 in the Power 5 leagues with football student-athletes earning $26,000 to $42,500 per person, men’s basketball student-athletes ranging from $55,000 to $77,400 & women’s basketball student-athletes from $6,800 to $14,100. Sportico’s McCann unpacks the NCAA’s motion opposing class certification in House v. NCAA, noting the NCAA claims a certified class action lawsuit could result in the association paying out billions of dollars in damages. To qualify for class certification, McCann explains that “those bringing the case must also have suffered injuries typical of others. The brief undermines the notion that college athletes suing over NIL and broadcast NIL (BNIL) ought to be in the same class. It argues that college athletes must bring individual cases since there are ‘substantial differences’ in players’ NIL values. Furthermore, the NCAA argues that identifying who ought to be paid is “impossible” because some would have, or would in the future, stay in school and keep roster spots that would otherwise go to other players. The brief specifically cites LSU (DI) women’s basketball student-athlete Reese and Connecticut (DI) WBB student-athlete Bueckers as individuals who say they intend to stay in college due to higher NIL earnings. Wentworth will add Women’s T&F this upcoming year, increasing its sport sponsorship to 19 varsity programs. AD Aaron: “We have had great success with women student-athletes who have joined our mixed teams over the last few years as they bring incredible enthusiasm, passion, and commitment to their sport. Albright, through its partnership with Nerd Street and Playfly Esports, will create a new 6,800 square-foot esports facility. The venue will include private space for Albright’s esports team, 60 gaming stations, a five-vs-five stage and more. Albright President Fetrow: “Not only will it be a catalyst for our popular varsity esports team, it will inspire synergies with our computer science department, enhance our game and simulation major, and provide hands-on learning experiences for K-12 Total Experience Learning students and others interested in the esports industry. D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle is joined by National Field Hockey Coaches Association Executive Director Clark and USA Field Hockey Executive Director Hoskins to discuss the Field Hockey Forward program, through which the two organizations are teaming up to promote the benefits of college field hockey and increase the number of NCAA programs from 286. Clark on the Field Hockey Forward program: “We both recognize the need to grow the college game. Division II and III, there’s been a little bit of growth, but over the past 30-plus years, the growth has been fairly stagnant at the Division I level. So we wanted to come together, collaborate, amplify our resources with USOPC, as well as try to strategically put forward an initiative that would showcase the benefits of field hockey at the collegiate level, starting with DI and then moving to Division II and III.” Check out the full Q&A on Connect.
