West Virginia and Mountaineers Men’s Basketball HC Huggins have released statements regarding the homophobic remarks Huggins made on a Cincinnati radio program yesterday, which reads, in part: “During the conversation, I used a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for —and I won't try to make one here. I deeply apologize to the individuals I have offended, as well as to the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati and West Virginia University. As I have shared with my players over my 40 years of coaching, there are consequences for our words and actions, and I will fully accept any coming my way. I am ashamed and embarrassed and heartbroken for those I have hurt. I must do better, and I will." WVU: “Coach Huggins' remarks today on a Cincinnati radio show were insensitive, offensive and do not represent our University values. Coach Huggins has since apologized. West Virginia University does not condone the use of such language and takes such actions very seriously. The situation is under review and will be addressed by the University and its athletics department.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Sykes sits down for an interview on the Rattlers’ Facebook page and covers several topics, including price increases to the Investing in Champions football season ticket packages. Sykes explains FAMU “was actually upside down” on its two most popular packages based on a cost analysis which took into account all the things the Rattlers paid for, including Orange Blossom Classic tickets, parking, Florida Classic tickets and north end zone passes. “In one of them the value was determined that we lost about $140K. On the second-most popular package, we lost about $90K, so if you round that up that’s about a quarter of a million of dollars that we lost just based on a simple cost analysis. So, really, I’m not out here price-gouging, what I’m trying to do is right-size the cost of the package based on what’s provided in the package so the institution does not lose money.” Sykes points out this is particularly important now given recent legislative changes which require institutions to cover medical expenses and degree pursuits for student-athletes that can now extend beyond their playing days. Full Q&A. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake takes a spin around the Pac-12’s football programs to see how season ticket sales are going. Arizona State has added 3K new season tickets since the hiring of HC Dillingham. The Sun Devils also have also surpassed the 90% renewal rate from last season. Oregon currently has a renewal rate of 86.6% and has sold 3,387 new season tickets. At Oregon State, the renewal rate is 90.3%, and the Beavers have sold nearly 2K new season tickets. Utah AD Harlan tells Canzano he expects the Utes’ renewal rate to reach 95% and says the season ticket waitlist remains at around 2K. Washington AD Cohen says the Huskies so far have a 93% renewal rate and that new season-ticket sales are trending “well.” According to Washington State AD Chun, Cougars have renewed 84% of their season tickets from last season, and Canzano notes that “historical trends in Pullman suggest the Cougars will end up in the high 80s or low 90s before the season kicks off.” (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker chats with WeCOACH CEO Fuchs about hiring trends in women’s sports, how the organization is helping to build diverse candidate pools and how data helps drive effective mentoring for women coaches. Fuchs agrees that the importance of work-life balance is gaining national awareness like never before. “We’ve spent a lot of time this past year helping coaches understand techniques, best practices for how they pour into their own wellness…and really prioritize that for themselves, so that not only can they bring the best version of themselves to the job as they’re leading these student-athletes, it also then helps these student-athletes see their role models, their mentors and be able to model that behavior. … So, we’re all for rule changes where it helps these coaches build in a little more work-life balance.” Full conversation, including info on today’s Moms Who Coach webinar. Cal State Bakersfield AD Conder: “The D1.dossier was very helpful in my preparation for interviews. Having so much information compiled in a readable format made me very confident throughout the search process. As part of my campus visit to CSUB, I participated in an open forum with university and local constituents. In conjunction with the open forum, I was asked to make a presentation about the state of affairs for CSUB Athletics and the future for CSUB Athletics. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Hiles catches up with several ACC ADs and Commissioner Phillips to discuss the league’s ongoing revenue distribution conversations, and Miami (FL) AD Radakovich advocates for an uneven distribution based on performance. “Count us in the group that would like to discuss and take to the nth degree some type of unequal revenue share circumstance but understanding that it’s gotta be something that everybody can agree to. There is a baseline for what we get. After that, you should be able to reward the success.” Pittsburgh AD Lyke says she’s open to having the conversation about uneven distribution, but “I’m just not sure that it will make such a significant difference that it’s worth changing philosophically the idea of equal revenue share.” Syracuse AD Wildhack is one of three league ADs who tell Hiles ACC football is undervalued, saying: “We need ESPN’s help to market football. We’ve made that clear to them. They have all of our rights, so it behooves them. A stronger ACC is good for ESPN and Disney across the board. I can’t underscore that enough. We’re not asking them to be a house organ for anybody. We’re not expecting that.” More from Hines. (link)

Florida State AD Alford says football season ticket sales are the strongest they’ve been since 2014 when average home attendance was 82,211: “We’re pacing ahead of where we were last year. The new ticket purchasers are higher already than we were last year, and normally July and August are really key months for us going into the season. We’ve already sold more [new] tickets than we did last year, and we haven’t gotten to our key months yet. … To see where our numbers are right now, I expect us to finish close to some of our all-time highs this upcoming year.” (link)

In the second of a two-part interview with the Courier & Press, Evansville AD Siegfried talks about the future of men’s and women’s basketball, noting the first year under MBB HC Ragland reminds him of his time at Cal State Bakersfield, where Roadrunners HC Barnes turned the team around in the second year. Siegfried: “I saw what he was building. … I’m not saying it’s going to be a one-year turnaround. I just know everything (Ragland) is doing is building it up for long-term success.” The focus in Ragland’s first year was to establish the culture and build a foundation on winning the right way. “(Ragland) had to get in the weeds a lot this year to do things that maybe other MVC head coaches were not having to do. I think that’s part of the reason for this hire.” After coming off its best season in six years, the Purple Aces WBB team is in “growth mode,” Siegfried continues, explaining he hopes to see that come to fruition in tangible ways. “Our hope is that we’re gonna get to the point that Meeks [Family Fieldhouse] can’t hold us. I’m not gonna be naive, I think that we have some time before we can do that. If we get to the point that Meeks can’t hold us, then we can start having more games at the Ford Center. I just think long-term success here, we have a lot of possibilities.” (link)

South Carolina State Acting AD Campbell tells trustees the work to ensure Title IX compliance is ongoing. “We are really trying to ensure that we address Title IX in a manner that is fitting for South Carolina State as far as our female student population versus our male student population. Right now we’re a little upside down, but we are making some strides to close the gap.” Campbell also notes the Bulldogs are making improvements to the softball facilities, including replacing the dugout roofs and installing a double batting cage. Trustees also approved the contracts of Men’s Basketball HC Martin, whose deal runs through June 30, 2027 and includes a base salary of $200K, and Women’s Basketball HC Eatman, whose contract also runs through June 30, 2027. On3’s Wittry reports the 52 public Power 5 institutions spent a combined $90.6M in football severance payments in FY22, marking the second-highest total ever, trailing only the $98.8M those schools spent in FY18. “When adjusted for inflation, $98.8M in June 2018 would’ve equated to more than $116M in June 2022. … Washington reported spending $17.03M on football buyouts between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. Florida reported spending almost $15.3M, Virginia Tech reported $10M, Texas reported $8.2M and Auburn reported $7.8M.” Wittry goes on to note that 16 of the 52 schools (31%) reported no football-related severance payments last fiscal year. That figure was 44% in FY18 and 42% in FY19. Also from Wittry: “Public Power 5 schools reported spending a total of nearly $133M on severance payments to all coaches and administrators in the 2022 fiscal year. That means roughly 68% of all severance payments were made to fired football coaches.” That figure includes $26M spent on men’s basketball severance payments, which eclipsed the FY18 total of $20.3M to set a new record.
