NCAA SVP Dan Gavitt offers more clarity on the work being done to reduce the time officials are spending at the monitor. From yesterday’s sitdown with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster: “I think part of the way to do that potentially is to add a coach's challenge or two and eliminate some of the automatic reviews that are happening right now that are elongating the end of games. We’re experimenting with that in the NIT this year. This year, NIT officials would not be able to go to the monitor unless the coach challenges…and if they're unsuccessful, to lose the timeout. So, it’s getting where we need to go ultimately. It’ll give us some data for the rules committee to consider in May.” (link)

The MAAC has agreed to a multiyear media rights extension with ESPN under which select regular season conference men’s and women’s basketball games and Olympic sport contests will be featured on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU and more than 500 MAAC events will stream annually on ESPN+ and on the ESPN App. The deal includes the return of the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship game to a primetime slot in a prominent national television window on ESPN/ESPN2 on Tuesday of Champ Week. Additionally, the MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship will now be a standalone event on Monday, available on ESPNU or ESPN+. The men’s and women’s basketball semifinals will take place on Sunday and stream on ESPN+, with the first rounds and quarterfinals also to be streamed on ESPN+. LEONA assisted the MAAC. (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle wants the Gophers’ men’s basketball team to rank in the top third of the Big Ten in revenue-sharing, according to the Star Tribune’s Chip Scoggins, who adds: “Gophers officials envision $5M to $6M as the target for the men’s basketball roster when combining revenue-sharing and true NIL. … The Gophers have been unable to retain key players under Johnson, because they lag in NIL for men’s basketball. University sources note that football coach P.J. Fleck was far more forceful and vocal initially in expressing the dire consequences of falling behind in the NIL race, which helped his program make up ground quickly. Struggles in men’s basketball contributed to a chilling effect in NIL support for that program.” For Scoggins, the question becomes whether Coyle will retain HC Ben Johnson or pay the $3M buyout. He adds: “The Gophers must squeeze every nickel possible out of men’s basketball for the financial health and vitality of the athletic department. Making a strong commitment in revenue-sharing to attract better talent is one component to that formula. Coyle must decide if that alone is enough.” (link)

In preparation for the House settlement, Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey explains that “through the Louisiana Tech Sports Performance Institute, we have developed and are launching a cloud-based General Manager system to support coaches, sport administrators, and staff in player acquisition and compensation models. Our partnership and collaboration with Victory GM will prepare us to be on the cutting-edge of roster management by: 1. Providing a platform to dive into performance analytics and identify position-related statistics that, paired with an AI model, will help us determine the per-game value of each position to build winning teams. 2. Providing a tool to identify, build, and set budgets based on total student-athlete benefits (scholarship, COA, Alston, NIL/Rev Share). This tool, combined with the performance analytics assessment, leads to a business-minded approach to distributing our student-athlete benefits, which should put us in position to compete for championships.” Ivey also points out the back damages portion of the settlement will cost an estimated $3M to $3.25M over 10 years and notes the Bulldogs/Lady Techsters will bring NIL efforts in-house “to create a nimble structure that most benefits our student-athletes. This structured approach will allow our supporters to directly enhance our student-athlete benefits while receiving a tax deduction for their gifts.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner proposes several potential realignment scenarios in light of the ACC’s settlement with Clemson and Florida State. In the first scenario, the “ACC’s rebellious children” decide they have enough money to compete. “Frequent CFP bids in the second half of the 2020s lead to the realization that kingpin status in the ACC is preferred over the Herculean struggle required in the SEC and Big Ten. … As a result, the ACC remains intact until the expiration of the media contract in the summer of 2036, and the Power Four structure lives on.” In the second scenario, Florida State, Clemson and either Miami (FL) or North Carolina (or both) leave the ACC for the Big Ten and SEC. Key point: Fox, which owns the Big Ten’s media rights, does not have an A-level college football property in Florida and might have designs on the Hurricanes or Seminoles when the Big Ten negotiates a new media deal in 2029-30.” The departures would “devastate the ACC, leaving behind second-tier football schools with limited media value. Those left behind could consolidate into a small, Group of Five-esque conference. They could merge with the Big East for basketball. Or they could join forces with the Big 12 to create a 24- to -28 school receptacle for any Power Four football programs not invited to the SEC or Big Ten.” Finally, Scenario 3 involves a “mass extinction event” in which schools without the ability to fully fund revenue-sharing will lose “relevance and value from 2025-30, to the point that the sport effectively cleaves along lines that, even today, are easy to envision.” Ultimately, there are too many unknown unknowns to accurately predict what will happen, but Wilner notes that now “we know when we’ll know.” (link)

The family trusts of Gary W. and Barbara A. Bryant have pledged their second gift in six years to Memphis via a leadership donation in the amount of $500K. The Bryants also announce a $7M increase to the record-setting $13M estate gift in 2019 that established the Gary W. and Barbara Bryant Athletic Excellence Fund. The now-$20M commitment reestablishes the Bryants’ donation as the largest estate gift in Memphis athletics history. In recognition of the Bryants’ generosity, Memphis will affix the Gary and Barbara Bryant name to the south end zone field lounge at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The exclusive seating area next to the Tigers' locker room for Tiger Leadership Circle members will now be named the Gary & Barbara Bryant Field Club. (link)

Northeastern unveils plans for a new multipurpose athletics and recreation complex on the site of Matthews Arena in Boston. The 310K-square-foot complex will include an arena that will seat 4,050 people for ice hockey and 5,300 for basketball and serve as the university’s largest indoor gathering space for athletic and non-athletic events. Huskies AD Jim Madigan: “For our varsity sports, this building signals to our peers and our competitors that Northeastern represents excellence. It is going to be a game-changer for our programs to recruit the best student-athletes to Northeastern. It signals to them that we’re serious about the development and success of our student-athletes and it signals to our coaches that this is a place where we can win national championships and league championships, where we have the modern-day amenities to compete against any institution in the country.” Check out the renderings. House case plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler joined SANIL Founder/Rutgers law professor Jason Belzer’s class to discuss the House settlement, and Belzer provides a recap: “Jeff believes the strongest objections to the case will come in reference to Title IX but because it's a anti-trust case, the same standard does not apply to calculating how damages are determined. All the settlement does is commit the schools to paying the damages and sharing future revenue, how the money gets paid out is not for the House case to decide. How Title IX gets applied will be litigated in the future. He also does not believe that the objection that the settlement can't happen because there should be a bargaining unit on behalf of the athletes will not succeed. The settlement allows for collective bargaining to exist in the future, but is not relevant to this case. Lastly, he does not believe that the objection around roster limits and eliminating walk-on positions will be enough to derail the settlement.” (link)

NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt joins The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster and reiterates that when it comes to expansion there “is no intended outcome” and “one of the potential outcomes certainly is still no expansion at all. And if there were to be a recommendation to expand, it would likely be very modest in nature.” Dauster notes Kentucky Men’s Basketball HC Mark Pope recently suggested expanding the regular season to 40 games, and Gavitt explains that would be more tractable than dramatically increasing the number of games in the NCAA Tournament, which is limited by the calendar. Gavitt goes on to remark that “I don’t think we should look at the SEC this year as an outlier and something that we're not going to experience probably on a pretty regular basis going forward. … Would the committee consider moving teams up or down a seed line to avoid teams from the same league playing early in the tournament? The simple answer is no. That would be the last resort. … We’ve done a lot of modeling just based on projections and and we think it's going to work out fine this year, but undoubtedly we're going to see more conference matchups during this year and future NCAA tournaments if you have as many as 11, 12, 13, or more teams from one league in the field.” Gavitt admits work needs to be done with the playing rules committee to curb the number of monitor reviews and also points out there are some “game administration” areas, such as subbing players in and shooting free throws in a timely manner, that can be tightened to shorten the length of games. More from Gavitt, including the difficulties associated with centralizing officiating. (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez covers several topics on the Big Mountain podcast and says the state of Texas is an area of interest in expansion, “but [we’re] pretty genuine in we're taking a pause right now. I think we're going to see what our media situation is and then if there's more to be had, maybe do that after we understand what our media rights are.” With UC Davis joining the league for non-football sports, Nevarez talks about the challenges associated with bringing in an FCS school for football and explains: “One of the things we were concerned about is with all these governance changes, what if we rely on bringing an FCS School up and then the rules change or something happens that prevents or makes entry into FBS more difficult? Certainly that's been a conversation. There have been significant political headwinds within the world of FBS about what is our size? Should we be adding more schools? So we felt strongly that right now at this time, sticking with current FBS schools was where we wanted to be to ensure our future. Doesn’t mean it's off the table forever, but certainly that's where we were this time around.” More from Nevarez, including the desire to maintain regionality in the conference, particularly for sports other than football. Memphis has raised $26.168M toward its Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium renovation project, Tigers AD Ed Scott told trustees yesterday. The Tigers are tasked with raising at least $50M toward the $222M project to unlock a $50M matching pledge made by FedEx Founder Fred Smith, and Scott said he feels good about reaching the goal “because there are some other conversations that I’m not at liberty to discuss that are rather large amounts that, when those come through, it’ll really put a nice dent in that $50M mark for us. So, I feel really good about where we’re at.” According to the Daily Memphian’s Frank Bonner II, Scott’s presentation included three verbal pledges for gifts worth a combined $7.8M; however, since those gifts aren’t finalized, Scott didn’t include them in the $26M figure he cited. Scott also noted that fundraising for the $8.5M Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium project has reached $6.97M. Additionally, Scott explained the Tigers wound up $764,620 short in football-season ticket revenue projections for FY25 and $43,200 short in football-parking revenue. The shortfall was expected due to decreased Liberty Stadium capacity prompted by the renovation. Bonner notes the “department’s total ticket and parking shortfall to date is $872,669, with spring sports still ongoing and one regular-season men’s [basketball] game remaining.” Scott on the House settlement: “All I’m saying is we’re opting in now. I don’t find it necessary to tell everybody what we’re doing, yet. As long as our coaches and staff know, that’s all I’m really concerned about at this point.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel agrees with Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey about making changes to the way the College Football Playoff is seeded, explaining: “I battled that with friends and people who would say, ‘Well, the number three team lost in the Playoff. The number four team lost in the Playoff.’ And I’m like, ‘No, the number four team was ranked 12th, the number three team was ranked eight.’ Now, one and two lost because they were the same, but you have these shifts. … When teams are ranked one and two, and because of the way they’re seeded, that people can come into those positions and back stronger teams up into positions where they’re playing you earlier than they normally would. So, I think it puts those teams that bounce out of the top four because other teams come in – I think it puts them at a disadvantage because you’re either playing tougher teams earlier or as the number one and two teams did this year, they’re playing a higher-ranked team earlier in the Playoff than they would have if they had just seeded them.” Manuel adds: “So, in my opinion, you add the five conference champions, and you leave them ranked where they are unless they’re outside. This year everybody would have been ranked one through 10. Arizona State would have moved from 12 to 11 and Clemson would have moved to 12. Then you set the Playoff from there.” (link)
|
More from Manuel, who comments on the job being done for the Wolverines by NIL Executive GM Terese Whitehead through Altius Sports Partners: “Her experience in the NFLPA and putting deals together for the athletes in the NFLPA, particularly group license deals…the way she's thinking about that and the way we're moving forward, trying to really ingrain the support in a wider net, casting a wider net, she has just been really exceptional in what she's doing. … But the key that I think she's bringing to the table is how can we have something that benefits more and more of our student-athletes? And how can those programs be built? How can they capitalize on being a Michigan athlete, whatever sport they're in? How can we support that in what they're doing through deals and those kinds of things? … She sits, like I said, in our leadership team, meaning she understands and has a great understanding now of the total department and what we're trying to do. And the ideas and the thoughts and the things that she generates have just been remarkable.” (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller talks about the decision to move the Spartans’ football finale next season against Maryland to Ford Field, saying he’s confident fans welcome this: “Yeah, I did my homework. This wasn't me just sitting in my office saying let's do this. I had a focus group of a number of people. I checked with a lot of people, my staff checked with a lot of people, and there was an all go on this. There was very little negative feedback.” Haller also stands by his commitment not to drop any sports: “While I’m AD, my plan is to not drop any sports, so you can put that on record. There are no plans to drop any sports.” (link)

As of March 4, Clemson had paid about $2.05M to four law firms for work on its lawsuit against the ACC, according to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Post & Courier’s Jon Blau, who notes the Tigers were billed for nearly 3,400 hours of legal work in the dispute. Blau also reports that “the biggest chunk has gone to the Columbia-based firm Nelson Mullins, which received about $1.54 million. Clemson's athletics fundraising arm, IPTAY, has paid about $890,000 of what was owed to Nelson Mullins. Clemson has said outside attorneys in the case will not receive state dollars.” Rather, the dispute has been funded by athletic department revenue as well as private donors. The latter included "un restricted" donations to IPTAY and gifts specifically earmarked for the effort. Whether the investment is worth it remains to be seen, but Blau notes the fee for leaving after 2030-31 has been reduced to $75M; therefore, “at this point, Clemson has parlayed a couple of million dollars in legal fees into tens and potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in future broadcast revenues.” (link)

West Virginia has unveiled a new men’s basketball season ticket model under which the per seat contribution will be combined with any other donations made to the athletic department, including contributions to the Country Roads Trust, to determine fans’ overall Mountaineer Athletic Club membership levels. Under the new model, 30% of season ticket holders will experience no increase or even a decrease in their overall season ticket cost and 50% will experience an increase of less than $250. Mountaineers AD Wren Baker: "Collegiate athletics is undergoing the most transformational period in its history. As we adapt to these shifts, the need for innovation, strategic planning and sustainable revenue generation has never been greater.” (link)
